Major kudos to you, Bill! The stock bitting on that particular lock from Kwikset was nearly a perfect sawtooth! So that's why I was more impressed than usual with that Smartkey lock. #keepontruckin because you're halfway to victory!
Dang, that was awesome. A few people have mentioned LPL's sidebar tensioning attack. Did you try something to modify this lock against that had Bill thought to try it?
@@thelockpickinglebowski633 Congratulations on finding such an awesome variety of locks! I look forward to each new video from BB so I can see what else you came up with.
I'm really impressed you were able to keep it rated PG. The sheer frustration would have had me dropping a couple of choice words. Well done Bill. This is a great series.
Thanks for posting the full experience Bill, as a still fresh newbie in the sport, it's heartening to see someone with your level of expertise take so long to do something - it gives me hope for improving my own skills!
You are not a quitter that is for sure, it would have taken me a month to put that much effort into this lock before I likely grabbed a bolt cutter and looped it off. Congratulations, not luck at all, persistence, you earned it.
Every time it went out of "fast forward" I was thinking "this is it" . That's a lot of footage Bill. But great vid and pick as always. Might have to upgrade to that generation kwickset on the ol shack here.
Thank you for showing the process to picking it. I have been holding off on making the 256 key set thinking I could just be a more patient and deliberate picker. I am going to make that set now.
Hey bill, try putting pressure down the reset hole to bind the sliders against the nubs that keep them in open position while resetting. I was noticing that I could get some binding and set them but it does take a fair amount of pressure to do.
Jeez, that's some downright diabolical lock design. Just goes to show that a small change to a core's design can have a really big impact. Great video, and I hope (touch wood) that none of the other locks give you nearly as much trouble as this one did.
That sidebar is called a reverse side bar. They were popular in the 30s when they came out. Best way to defeat it is use a bent (rounded contour) feeler gauge and stick it in the side of the core to tension the side bar. This will give you binding pins. Once it’s picked you turn the core.
I think Lock Picking Lawyer used a thin bent piece to apply direct pressure to the side bar, so you could pick normally then insert a wiper to turn it.
The concept Kwikset used was to go back to a circa 1960’s design General Motors - a side bar that retracts in the opposite direction and is squared. The picks we used were called rockers, with various key looking profiles but thin enough to rock up and down like a see saw.
@@tedwutang while both are excellent content creators and obviously very knowledgeable in their field, it's pretty clear LPL is at a different level skill wise. He consistently single pin picks about every lock that has ever come his way.
I was thinking a city rake the whole time. A city rake and a reverse city rake seem to open all wafers. That tension thing... I don't know. I loved watching your process. PERSISTENCE!
Wow I can't believe that worked, there's a small detent in the back left of the keyway that should prevent the core from rotating if a key is not inserted or the detent is not depressed. I'm not sure how that thing popped open I'm assuming the violent vibrations push the detent out of the way or maybe your tension wrench did it but that is incredible great job!!!!
I noticed there was some degree of play between the barrel and padlock itself when you were attempting various rake attacks - could the Kwikset be shimmed or the sidebar bypassed? I ask as an Australian that does not have access to one of these locks.
No, unfortunately that attack did not work on this lock. It appears Kwikset removed the notch on the core and somehow blocked access to the sidebar, so I was not able to do the shimming trick.
BTW Bill thank you, your videos helped me get into locking picking God probably ten years ago. Now I'm working as a Locksmith. I come across smart keys all the time. While yes pretty damn pick resistant they do seem to fail pretty often they will somehow forget their bitting from time to time and a key that worked for years suddenly won't. While great locks for pick resistance not theost durable.
I was waiting for the lock to break. I'm not sure if the alterations to the original made it stronger but i know the original wasnt extremely strong. I'm glad your finger didn't fall off.
I have been struggling with a smart key lock for a while...couldn't figure out why I couldn't open it... quickset is usually a lock I pick easily.... thanks to you and the lawyer making these videos I realise that I'm not a sissy... just a dummy
#Bosnianbill Ok so what this is called on the new kwikset locks is a reverse side bar, LPL did a video about it where he took either a broken pick or a knife and bent it, so that he could slide it into the left outer side of the core so that it would apply pressure to the sidebar and in turn pressure to the core. Video #904 i believe is the video he talks about it
I hear you and have watched that video (several times). Unfortunately, this lock seems to be immune to that attack. That could be because Kwikset corrected their mistake and removed that gap, OR that exploit does not work in the padlock version, only the deadbolt model.
Haven't picked a lock in my life but I love these videos and reviews. I tried once though - to no avail. It was out of need but I didn't know anything about locks but it seems like the Medeco lock I was trying to pick was a little bit too hard for me to pick with a filed down hair pin and a thin metal strip for a wrench. I gave up the idea of being able to pick locks soon after that. Also, 98% of the locks in my country are Abloy locks so it kinda feels like it's a "useless hobby" in the sense that it's not a skill that would ever come in handy (like the time I had to pick a Medeco lock).
Once you're done with the box and can get at the key, I'd enjoy seeing that lock gutted. It would be interesting to see if you are correct with the square sidebar and slot.
Now, all kwikset has to do, is combine this sidebar design with non-rekeyable titanium lifters/wafers that can not be broken by force and ward the sidebar a little better, and I think it would be excellent!
It's very humble of you to say that opening this lock was "100% luck," but you're being at least a little unfair to yourself, in my opinion. Sure, there doesn't seem to be a formula or style to picking these new Kwiksets, but you did come up with a solution that eventually worked, even if you had to keep trying like mad with it. I'd say it was more like 50% luck, 50% innovation with that sort of "pendulum" thing, and another 79,543% persistence!
Bill came to the lock, saw it was going to take 45 minutes to pick, and conquered it. Stupid puns aside, the new Quickset core would be good in a Master Lock.
For those who don't know, I'm a Locksmith - for almost 29 years. So, the design of the squared off sidebar design - blame General Motors from back in the 1930's. Pioneered by Briggs and Stratton, the lawn mower company. In vehicles, locks are good for at least 20 years, depending on the quality. I seldom need to replace locks, it's usually work keys that throw fits. Bill, now if you wanted in the lock sooner, the shackle removal is always an option. For the ability to drill one of these, look and stop the video 2:49. There's a ball bearing there - drill bits refuse to cut through them. I use a Dremel with a cut-off wheel, and slice my way through the casting, and the sidebar becomes butter. But if the plug, and sidebar was made from Stainless Steel? Damn, just cut the thing off already. Doesn't help if it's door hardware, but they have their own faults. Bill, see what I deal with now? I will commend you on effort of trying to replicate being on your knees and all... But WHAT IF this lock was on a trailer coupler? LOL
Bill, if that's a 3rd gen you can just put a shim down the outer left side of the core to tension the side bar. They aren't very hard at all that. I think you just did that the hardest way possible which was impressive in it's own right though.
I think you found the next lock to use in your new shooting range video, if a lock deserves to be destroyed that's it. Great job as always Bill, thanks for not giving up!

Bill, you jave the patience of Job! Looks like Kwikset is going all serious on pick resistance. About time someone did!
Now THAT is a quality core! Well done!
Nope, still junk. It's made with a Zinc core body, you can melt it and have all the steel bits fall out.
@@JosephArata Is there still the smartkey forcing attack or did they fix that in gen 2
Gigs - you can still force them. The cores are soft metal better than the plastic.
Joseph Arata So someone is going to use a blowtorch to melt the lock to my house or garage? I’d think smashing a window would be a LOT easier.

Great locking mechanism and fairly simple.
It's a rather complex mechanism. So much so that they can only (profitably) cast it out of zinc making it susceptible to destructive attacks.
