Great job, Bill! Yes, the Van and Cila shutter lock were intended to be the hardest ones (collectively) to pick on that side. Attention viewers: Bill thinking out loud is a great way for us to understand his thought process for figuring out how to tension the Van lock. Try not to be dismayed by unusual locks, keep on brainstorming ideas, and have lots of fun while doing it! Remember that special eureka moment the first time you ever picked open a lock and realize that you can do it again for other locks. Always encourage each other and especially encourage new pickers. The Dude abides.
I'm gonna be honest, Dude. When I saw this series start I wasn't interested because I thought it was a series of challenge locks which I don't really have too much interest - day to day locks (even rare ones) are more interesting as they're the ones being used around. When I finally gave up and started watching I was pleasantly surprised to find normal locks on the box. This box and lockpicking series is basically a huge guide on the multitude of lock types that we have floating around and it's always a pleasure to see new things popping up! Thanks to you and Bill for this!
I'm surprised the "Van Lock" corporation Plug locks don't have more pins?!? They can seriously add in a 8th pin to complete the circle, then add in another 8 pins on the inner circle off set in between the existing pins. Then if they really wanted to be evil, add in another 16x pins on the outside like a standard tubular lock. With 10 levels of bitting per pin, imagine 10^32 combinations. Even if you had a computerized mechanical picker, that would just be TEDIOUS AS HELL =D
CA glue is very strong, but brittle. I'd imagine it would have given good feedback. Also, if he was already cleaning it up, CA glue cleans up with acetone, which I wouldn't imagine would damage the lock at all.
@Jamie Fletcher - I use CA glue for wood turning where the bowl blank is held onto a glue block on a faceplate. It usually requires a chisel and solid hammer strike to his the shear point. Bill would likely need a glove it he were applying that much force.
VHB tape usually requires 24 hours to cure and achieve full-strength. There's also variations on the tape for what 3M refers to as high-energy and low-energy surfaces. I forget which materials count as one or the other.
This comment may get buried, and it may be too hard on Bill, but I hope Bill at least makes a playlist of this whole treasure chest lock series. It would be even nicer if he compiled the whole series into one video, as they really do roll from one video to the next easily. I have really been enjoying the series, and I really do appreciate hearing Bill's brain storming and thinking process while he tries each lock.
VHB (very high bond) tape is designed to install skyscraper windows, so it is meant to stay stretchy. And it takes 24+ hours to develop a full bond, IIRC. I'd also vote for crazy glue here.
An excellent, descriptive, tutorial. Many other pickers seem to get opens without telling us, in any great detail, how they did it and how they shaped the home-brew tools required. First-class picking...
Absolutely LOVE the more UNUSUAL locks. Will be searching YT for more on this one. I'm glad the Dude included this one, and good job Bill on ... defeating it.
Reminds me of the time I picked an SFIC core to control and thought I was in a wicked false set. Took an extra five minutes before the core fell out in my lap.
Wow! Extremely impressed Bill. I really like the transitions of how you came to put attention on the lock. I also like the fact that you picked it but you made mistakes at the same time. We're all human. That was a stinker of a lock. Nice job.
SUPER GLUE!! That spoon was a good idea but try super gluing it to the lock. a quick touch with a torch will break the glue when you are done. I got this idea the first time you picked a lock like this because I had just watched a clickspring video and he used a super glue arbor where he glued a thin piece of brass to his lathe and cut it with tools. So I'm thinking its plenty strong to tension a lock.
Great video as always. I'd like to thank you and the Dude for getting my wife involved in lock picking. This particular Series has gotten her attention and she avidly awaits the next one. As do I! Thanks again.
Way to stick with it Bill, even after you had it picked! :-) we've all been there before, and we certainly appreciate you taking us along for the occasional Bosnian bill "whoops" moments!
My thought was to use the hole that goes deepest to tension it to set as many pins as you can, then change the tension to some other hole when necessary.
Great work and love the thought process on this. Your use of the Y Wrench is similar to how I picked my VAN lock, I just used 2 of the Southord ones that were cut down and moved tension between the 2 of them :-)
What a difficult lock to pick, well the issue is tensioning. Beat that and you are home straight (as Bill demonstrated). We are all so curious to know what's in the box: Guess- Lock Picking Lebowski's false teeth will jump out and bite Bill on his tush.
I've really been enjoying this series of videos. I just ordered yesterday the Sparrows Tuxedo set for my first real set of picks. Now maybe I can quit making them out of feeler gauges.
Bill, it's pretty logical that the "pin" in the 6 o'clock position doesn't do anything. Since before you start picking, there is no pin there, so it's just 2 metal discs rotating over one another.
I've seen someone do one of these in the field by soldering herself a lever on the brass. Was another piece of brass and all the heat needed was pulled from a small torch.
Love that an expert lije yo can be fooled too. I had a lock once I had opened and didn't realize it because the shackle wouldn't pop. Back when I was still taking a locksmith course. Over 17 years ago lol. I live watching your videos. Keep up the good work

Awesome, however you forgot to replace the "audiojungle" in the intro music:)
Sweet, nice pick. Really enjoying seeing you pick the locks in sequence on the box. The anticipation of how much air is inside the box is mounting. #DudeLockPickingLebowski, thank you for giving #Bill some fun locks to work on.
it makes me think "The Dude" meant that its equal on each side, meaning it has easy, medium and hard type locks of equivalent difficulty on each side. Not sure, but that's just my opinion.
Tip: 1. Take some blue tape 2. Tape both of the surfaces you want to stick together 3. Super glue the tape (object 1) to the tape (object 2) This is a great no-mess way of temporarily sticking 2 surfaces together.
Techno_Zed But does the blue tape stick well enough to the two surfaces? Because otherwise you have the same problem Bill had with the specific type of red tape he tried.

Sad that a VAN Lock brings back memories of the early 1980. I loaded vending machines and those locks were on all the cigarette machines. As I left the biz a new lock was replacing them called MEDECO but only on the machines with Fed Tax money inside. I was yelling at the screen when you picked it a did not pull the hard enough. Thanks for reminding me of lost youth...as if it matters.
interesting video, I have never encountered such a lock. Your intros are great and renewed often, maybe you should suggest to Scotty Kilmer to do the same, haha. May I ask what software you use to make these animations?
True story i once picked a commando lock thought it got a false set wouldnt do anything set it down in frustra realized it was already picked and turned it all the way to open i was like how did that happen
I recently got one of those lock cores. it appears it is a KIK type but same pins. I plan to drill two holes in a piece of wiper blade insert and weld two hypodermic needles spaced so they would fit inside two adjacent pin holes then pick those two pins through the needles with a smaller needle that would fit Inside my tensioner holes. my first attempt will be superglue spoon shaped item just like you did with the VHB tape but got to do it so you don't get glue in the pins. i may try transfer tape instead of the glue using your idea. VHB transfer tape has no foam so its a more positive adhesion. I do like your tension wrench tho.

Why is the inner core of the Plug Lock made out of Brass? Why isn't it Hardened Steel with Nitro Carburization?
This challenge box is interesting, so many unusual locks to pick open
Just my guess. The box contains the return address and enough cash to cover the shipping costs. :P
Probably could have super glued that feeler gauge on and lightly heated to remove.
CA glue is very strong, but brittle. I'd imagine it would have given good feedback. Also, if he was already cleaning it up, CA glue cleans up with acetone, which I wouldn't imagine would damage the lock at all.
That was my thought exactly.

I used a bent fork to pick one of these, the tines doubled as picks in two of the pins.
Good demonstration, allowing us mere mortals to follow the process through to a hard fought open.👍
A C-clip handling tool would be an obvious alternative tensioner with a nicer handle.
If you have your camera focus on the lock, then put it into manual focus, it will stay focused on the lock and not keep focusing on your thumb.
VHB (very high bond) tape is designed to install skyscraper windows, so it is meant to stay stretchy. And it takes 24+ hours to develop a full bond, IIRC. I'd also vote for crazy glue here.
Thanks Bill. Nearly had a heart attack when those drums suddenly kicked in.
Perhaps using the feeler Gage to tension the lock by pushing into the side of one of the holes, would allow you to pick it.
Is it any wonder Bill's hands are always cut up?
Pets, power tools, cactus farming, cutting vegetables... the possibilities are nearly endless.
Its called VHB tape, strongest tape there is. Its used for holding thousand pound glass panels on the sides of skyscrapers
An excellent, descriptive, tutorial. Many other pickers seem to get opens without telling us, in any great detail, how they did it and how they shaped the home-brew tools required. First-class picking...
BINGO.

They should rate lock security based on Bills Pick Time.

You can set the pins, out half a rotation to hold them in place then use a tubular lock pick to mold the depths and you have a key.
Interesting approach. I was wondering if the tape would hold under a shear load. Cool lock; like your final approach.
