    I just finished putting the Borgeson system in my 1971 Vette. The issue with the rag joint supplied not fitting is a real. What I found is that the problem was where the steering shaft had been milled down and flattened to accept the old rag joint. Looking at the entire spline of the steering column under magnification it was pretty obvious that the milling had “heaped up” metal in the spline grooves at this area. Once I took a file to the splines here and re-established the grooves, the rag joint went on pretty easily. I also filed all of the splines for good measure and cleaned out the rust and debris. I think this helped also. Hope this helps someone else.

      Believe it or not this car was from Wisconsin.

    I did that on my 76. Was not easy on my back. It works ok, but not a huge improvement. Cleaned up the steering parts that go bad often. Great video.

      Do you still have play in the steering?

    Hey Mark I notice do didn't show the connection between the rag and the steering column, that was my biggest problem I could not get the steering shaft to move, with out hitting it really hard, and I didn't want to tear up any thing in the steering column it self, so I was advised to go back to stock, what a pain!!!

      Yes, I sorry about that. My column was freshly professional rebuilt and moved so easy I forgot it was a major concern of mine too. So, it didn’t get filmed.

    Was the 'stiffing bracket' a must have? Got a part number as I'm not seeing it on Summit Racing. About to order this kit for my 81 Vette.

      It’s a Ridetech part. They suggest it if you AUTOCROSS or have larger than factory wheels.

    Did you centre the steering box before installing the pitman arm and steering coloum otherwise the steering wheel will not sit at the correct position when its all back together?

    • @OntheMarkwithMark
      @OntheMarkwithMark  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did pay attention to that Peter, but right off the bat me steering wheel is way off. Can’t I just reposition the wheel after the alignment anyway?

    • @Mysticpete
      @Mysticpete 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@OntheMarkwithMark No, you can't reposition the wheel from the steering column, well on the 79' - 82's you can't because there is a lip that centres the wheel to the column, so I just noiced you replaced the origonal column with what looks like a later 79'-82' column, if this is the case then you definately will need to get the wheel as close to centre as possible by positioning it on the steering box splines with the steering box centred, once you drive the car I have no doubt that it will need adjusting again, But you do this by winding the tracking shafts in or out to get the steering centred. Hope this helps.

      Thanks for the tips Pete. If this was a 79-82 column wouldn’t it have the cruise control lever on it? This one does not.

    how will this work and fit with a 454 engine as far as room? And did you have to pull the steering column back or did you leave it in place? Thanks

    • @OntheMarkwithMark
      @OntheMarkwithMark  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I can only imagine the 454 would be a tighter fit. I had to move the steering column approximately 2 inches. Sorry I didn’t film that part.

      @@OntheMarkwithMark how long did it take you to do this install? A mechanic quoted me 10 hours.

  • @davidcollins7667
    @davidcollins7667 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    did you have to shorten the steering column to get the new steering box to fit?

    • @OntheMarkwithMark
      @OntheMarkwithMark  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yes. I’m sorry I know that’s a point of major concern to many people. My column was recently professionally restored and the shaft moved really easily. So much so that I took it for granted and didn’t document that part of the installation. My mistake. I had to slide it about 2 inches.
