'Totally gone': Chimney Rock destroyed by Hurricane Helene

- At least 90 people have been confirmed dead in connection with Hurricane Helene, including 30 in North Carolina's Buncombe County, officials said.
About 110 miles northwest of Charlotte, the village of Chimney Rock was among the communities hit hardest by Helene. People there say the devastation is "worse than you can ever imagine."
George Carter, a North Carolina restaurant owner told NBC News he's been driving up the mountain from his home in Lake Lure to get enough cell service to contact families and neighbors. Carter said he doesn't know anyone personally who died in the storm, but the devastation is shocking.
"There's mud everywhere," Carter said. "Buildings are gone. Streets are gone. Homes are completely gone or damaged. Maybe 40% of Chimney Rock is still there. The stuff that's still there is filled with mud and smashed up." #Helene #ChimneyRock

So many great memories of Chimney Rock vacations with my family over the past 50 years. My heart is broken, and I am praying for all impacted. Thank you to First Responders who saved so many. I know material things can be rebuilt, and lives are the most important. But this one hurts.

That was the most beautiful scenic drive I have been on 28 years ago along that area after we were returning from the The Chimney Rock Park area. We were amazed by how all those homes were built on those giant rocks along that beautiful river. That was all incredible to my wife and myself. So sorry to see this area devastated like this.
I am from Germany, and visited a friend who lived near Chimney Rock in 2022. Really sad to see the place so destroyed. Much love.
😂 feeling sorry for a sun down town 🚩🚩
This is awful. It was such a beautiful town with friendly people. Prayers for the residents and those affected by the storm.
Friendly to who? I heard it was a sundown town.

Man I love that little town, I loved the movie Last of the Mohicans so much that I used to occasionally go up Chimney Rock & then take the trails to & from Hickory Nut Falls where they filmed the final fight scene on the cliff path. That little town sat in one of the most beautiful places on earth, I always enjoyed going to the little shops & places there after visiting the falls. This is a terrible tragedy.
Same. Good memories. Sad.😢
Wow I loved that movie!
Most religions in NC are anti bible meaning anti christ. Do not add or deduct his holy words. Must follow the law of Christ! This flooding and hurricane coming from heavens to all people dont have fear with him and dont believe
I’m only 15 miles from there. Trees and power lines down everywhere.
My wife and I go to Chimney Rock park often to the lookout. It appears the entire cliffside has collapsed and the park is completely gone. Worse is the loss of life but these places that were completely destroyed like Chimney Rock park can never be replaced.
Resident of Hendersonville, NC here. My friend stayed in Chimney Rock and he called me and told me he was getting rescued by an Helicopter. 4 mins later, he’s sending a video of his house going down the mountain in a mud slide smh. I pray everybody made it out safe
The Feds just took all the land in this town and are in the way of civilians trying to help X is the only place you can see the evidence

Never could I imagine this would happen to our NC mountain region from a Hurricane. 😢
I always thought that we were too far inland.

Isn’t it true that the Chimney Rock Park is entirely gone.
@@BradLeroy no. Half the village along thr street is. They'll rebuild, and redo the bridge to the actual chimney rock park, and rebuild the stairs etc. Will take a long time, but I believe they will. And I will absolutely continue supporting them. ❤️
that is terrible. sounds like it was a special place that a lot of people beyond even just the people who live there cared about.
The movies 'Last of the Mohicans' and 'Dirty Dancing' filmed there. In the 1930s F. Scott Fitzgerald spent a lot of time there. Even before the 700+ acre lake was built in the late 1920s, Clark Gable, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fairbanks, and other movie stars used to vacation there. Beautiful area with a 400-foot waterfall. There is a 75-mile panoramic view from atop Chimney Rock.
It was always my dream to live in a village like Chimney Rock, right downtown in a beautiful touristy area like that. I actually helped set up a property about 10 minutes away from downtown...can't believe it's gone, for a year I was driving through there nearly every day....

Almost all of western NC is GONE! It's like a zombie apocalypse. NO food, NO running water, NO power, NO phone service! People are stranded and dying. Where is the North Carolina national guard?? Where are the helicopters and trucks to get people aid, or get them out of there?? FEMA should be there. This is even WORSE than Hurricane Katrina down in Florida! I feel horrible for that little rv/trailer park that was right on the river. It was so cute. Those trailers hadn’t moved in probably 30 years.
I was just thinking about that. We stayed at Lake Lure last summer and I almost told my fiancé's step-son that he should move his trailer there because it was such a nice area. Very thankful I didn't.

19 inches of rain, wow ! All those little shops are at least 60 years old or maybe much more. I don't know. I've been there several times. This is infamously historic.
It’s so ironic people move to and retire in the mountains, instead of the coast, to avoid hurricanes. This is like a bad dream.

And it continued to rain.

How many of our allies going to help us the way we help them?
I know. And what about all those Vietnamese, Iraqis, Afghans, Syrians, Central Americans, Egyptians, Cambodians etc etc. People we risked our lives to liberate. You would have thought they’d have at least shown some gratitude and turned up to help clean up. Jesus! No gratitude. What can you do..
The problem is we have not really ‘helping’ anyone. We have been propagandized to believe our tax dollars have been going to charitable acts overseas, instead of being fleeced by bankers and war makers. We did not liberate these people, or ‘spread democracy’ .. we brought them war and destruction. That being said, we are in the same position as always.. we have each other, and we will have to come together to fix our communities.. at a local level.

Where are the REST of the people in this town? This is so horrific and sad. This storm hit 7 states hard. Long recovery all around.
Unfortunately, some places will never be safe to live in again. I would not rebuild there. If it happens once, it can happen again.
Has the government sent any help in yet to help recover the dead from the debris piles yet ?
The fact an old woman is stuck in an mud slide...
Mayorkas said in June Fema was ready. What happen since then?
Why do I get the feeling that the federal government is going to redo the flood plain in these areas making it almost impossible for the citizens to rebuild there the same way they did several years ago when I-40 and eastern counties were flooded after getting hit by back to back hurricanes ?! I understand that those areas are possible to flood again but the odds are not in a long time and only if the same scenario were to happen again! They should at least be able to build back on stilts or more stable bases !!
Chimney rock has a stockpile of lithium the world has never seen. Coincidence?
I will say a prayer for all affected. So sorry for your losses.
Was this a sundown town?
If so then is this punishment?

The storms of life come to everyone

I saw a You Tube video where those in Charge of the area flooded, said that everything was fine, and we are trying to get business owners back in Our town. There is no conspiracy to do something so stop all of the noise.
Eventually everyone will see the map of the flooded areas that have high concentrations of Lithium that Black Rock and the like will come in and buy the land where people are missing and those who need to rebuild won't be allowed to rebuild for some reason that we don't know at present.
How can those in charge benefit? They can change deeds of land where no one survived into their names and sell to Black Rock. All it takes is a Quit Claim Deed filed under the table at the Courthouse. Who would do that? More above.
I saw an account of one lady who lived south of Asheville said that the river they lived on was normally 2 feet deep and required emergency notification if the level went to 6 feet. She said that before the Hurricane arrived, the level was at 9 feet. How could that happen? think we know the Why.
