Thanks for the video. I watched another video about grinding and then making sausage and there was one thing that I had never even thought of. Once you are at the end of you grinding, take a whole or part of a slice of bread and feed it into the hopper, tamping it down. Run the grinder and once the bread is finished coming out, your shaft is clear of meat. It just helps to empty that shaft, so that you don't have to do it with your hand. I hope that this is a piece of information that some might find useful. Thanks again for all of the videos that you share.
Thank YOU! We have had the meat grinder attachment for a couple of years and I caught my husband watching this video and he went straight into the kitchen to grind something. It was boneless thighs which we turned into chicken patty parmesan! Thank you, Kevin and Sarah. Love your channel!
I love a kitchen aide mixer! There are attachments for all kinds of stuff including milling grain. My mom has had hers since i was in elementary school and im 48 now. It still works like a champ. Well worth the investment! And the mixer with attachments take up far less space than the equivalent equipment.
I've got the kitchen aid metal version and it's the best grinder I've ever used. I had the plastic one and the issue with it is during a long grind session it gets real greasy from heat. the metal version you refrigerate it and can grind for a very very long time before it gets hot enough to melt fat
That's good to know. I've seen the new metal one on Amazon & wondered if it was much better than the plastic. I always worry when my KA started to strain while grinding more than a pound or 2 of beef or pork.
They have the metal one available for the kitchen aid but it is pretty spendy. Not sure if you know but put your meat in freezer for about 15 minutes after you strip or cube it before you grind it. Makes the texture really nice.
Glad to find this older video of yours. I inherited my mom's grinder attachment but there were no instructions inside and I didn't know if it needed to assemble any differently than my electric grinder. Am making relish and the electric grinder only has the fine plate so I'm going to try the Kitchenaid. I didn't realize you could get the manual online for free. In past when I've looked up missing manuals they were always found at a per-pay site. Thanks, Kevin.
I use my attachment for processing tomatoes. Does a fantastic job, but was nervous to use the plastic attachment for grinding meat. THANK YOU so much for the very informative video!!! I'm ready😂❤❤❤
This is a question I had! WOW KitchenAid Grinder for $7 at thrift store? SCORE! I might have to put this on my Amazon wish list -- having 7 grown kids is finally starting tp pay off! Very good video, nice presentation of some good information! 😄
I have that one also. It works pretty good. I have heard of people needing to get the cone replaced, but I don't know if it's because they went too slow or too fast. I always freeze my fruits before deseeding, even if its just for a few days. You'll get more pulp because the freezing process breaks down the cell walls so it doesn't stay attached to the seed. Good luck!
I had one of f those mixers and was making bread I made second bread and burners the motor out of itx. It got to hot. So be careful with it. Love you too it's.
@@annevans5547 : YEP.....that's what happened when I was grinding pork for sausage. A stand alone meat grinder is the way to go....just my opinion. Tossing a $90 "cheapie" grinder is less heartbreaking than losing an expensive KA stand mixer.
Nice video we have had our grinder attachment for about 6 or 7 years and have used it heavily. Two to three pigs and several deer a year. Plus when we run out of burger we will grind up extra steaks or roasts, yeah we are crazy and like burger better than steak or roasts.
Fantastic video, well done my friend. I just returned mine for a replacement. I couldn’t hand turn the Spindle so I was afraid it would damage my KitchenAid
thanks for this video! we got one for Christmas and I just ground about 3lbs of venison a few days ago. burgers are SO much better than store bought beef!
Thank you for this... really informative, not a review from a professional butcher who's gonna be a snob about their pro tools.. just a review for a normal person doing smaller amounts, you sold me, thanks much!
For smaller amounts (1-5lbs) the KA is ok. But processing a deer or 2 or 3? No way I'd do that. There's that old saying.... "The right tool for the job." Once I started grinding my own burger and sausage in bulk I couldn't deal with the KA any longer. Plus, I think it was straining my motor... and those stand mixers aren't cheap. Btw, If you enjoy making your own pasta I can highly recommend the KA pasta attachment.
I have a LEM 32 BigBite grinder. I used to use a KitchenAide attachment, but it just takes too much time and is too much work. The small amount of meat you double ground in the video I could do in less than 5 minutes without using the plunger. Don't get me wrong, if you only grind small amounts at a time -- the KitchenAide attachment is just fine. Other companies make metal versions of the same thing -- which have an advantage, because you can freeze the metal unit before using it so your meat stays COLD while your grind. When your meat heats up during grinding, the fats break down and you end up with a mealy texture to your sausages. For stuffing sausage in a casing, I highly recommend buying a dedicated sausage stuffer. They are available in several sizes -- both manual and motorized, and it makes stuffing sausage much, much easier.
8:40 People at home, do NOT do this. Always unplug your machine before switching the dies or removing the blade. This machine chops meat; it doesn’t care what kind you put in or if it’s attached to you.
I love my kitchen aid! I also have the pasta maker attachment & the vegetable sheet attachment < I make zucchini lasagna with the sheets of zucchini .. instead of using pasta lasagna noodles... thanks for the video!
The D-N-L's kitchen aide grinder attachment works tougher & faster than my stand alone! My stand alone gets hot, has to take breaks, while the kitchen aide kept on trucking! :)
Hey, I have a quick question: I have a K45SS KitchenAid from the Hobart era (made in the 1970s). There is very -- and I do mean, very -- little difference in speed that exists between "Stir" (setting 1) and "2" (well, you know.....that's setting 2). Is this normal?? If it is not, how do I figure out how to fix it? Any idea what it needs? Someone said something on another video of yours about a "spring" and that they lost their lower gears (was it the....re-greasing video? Unsure)......and they repaired it. Does that ring a bell? I've also looked everywhere for a K45SS Hobart-era "maintenance" or "repair guide".....I see lots of Post-1986 (which is when Whirlpool took over)....guides, but those models they developed have less-powerful motors and different speed adjustments. What do you think?
Does the attachment have a design that prevents blood and myocin from back draining into the stand mixer? I saw another TH-cam video where the poster has problems with fluids draining back into the stand mixer. It wasn't a Kitchenaid model, but a popular metal version. I'd like to get the one you're showcasing if it has some kind of way to prevent the fluids from draining back into the motor housing. Thank you for your time and effort in making the video.
Thank you so much for this video. With us moving soon we won't have access to the large meat grinder that we currently use and I've wanted to get this attachment for my kitchen aide, but Chad was concerned about it burning up my mixer. This definitely gives us something to think about. Thanks again- Jenny
Living Traditions Homestead Yeah and that's another thing. We never knew that you could grease them or know that we were supposed to. So thank you greatly for that video as well. I've had mine for over 15 years and would be crushed if it burned up. - Jenny
I stumbled onto your channel looking for jerky ideas for deer… I 100% love your guys channel… Like the natural living idea (not a big GMO worrier myself) but I do try to eat more healthy nowadays… I say keep up the great videos!
If you still have your stand alone grinder you might want to take the parts to a machine shop and have them draw up replacement parts and fabricate new parts for you. It might be wise to have extra parts made since they have to set up for one anyway. Places that ever haul alternators and motors can help with motor issues and electrical issues sometimes too or they sometime can suggest who can do the work for you.
Have you used the grain grinder attachment for the kitchen aid? I am looking into purchasing a grain grinder and wondered if they work well. Anyone that has used one, please share your opinion. Thanks so much. Another helpful video guys.
I don't know much about grinding meat as we have never done it. When I was growing up, my dad and brother would always take it to someone for grinding. Question, they always had fat added? Do you do that and can the kitchen aid do that?
+Cindy Thomas You could add the fat with the KitchemAid. You would want to mix it in after the first grind and then regrind with the smaller blade. Normally, fat is only added when making sausage.
I found a kitchen aide mixer at the dump! Score! I already had one and all the attachments that I love! So the score one is at our cabin! People set items outside the dumpsters, so I took the mixer home to see if it worked ok!
I have a Pro 600 KA mixer and I am on my 4th replacement worm gear. This time grinding chicken. I do not know what I could be doing wrong as it states that it can handle up to 8 cups of whole wheat flour which I find to be not true also. Had to can chicken instead of grinding it today. Probably going to invest in a hand crank model as a back up.
I have the same KA and it started straining when grinding meat. I plan on replacing my cheapie (plastic gears) grinder that has broken after 2 years of use) with a LEM .5 or .75hp. I still thinking it through. I only grind around 100 lbs of meat a year. As for bread....I like to knead the dough in my Zojirushi bread machine, even if I'm going to bake it in my oven.
I have watched all your videos and I must say I have enjoyed them very much. Congratulations on reaching 4000 subscribers. You are both doing a great great job. Take care, God bless...

Great review. Great tips, especially on the "do not tighten it" part. I would recommend also to make sure you put the cutting blade int he right direction and to put a little food grade oil/grease. I use mine (it is a knock off brand that works just as well) for small batches. I would add that the attachments used to stuff sausage are pretty much useless and will leave you with frustrations and poorly stuffed sausages. It is OK though if you are using it to grind and stuff very little (a couple lbs) of sausages or in a pinch if you cannot afford a more efficient sausage stuffer.
Sorry to disagree, but I used that exact grinder attachment on my KA Mixer a few times. It was a long & tedious workout and I was exhausted after a few pounds of meat. In a pinch it's, at best, "just ok" for a pound or so, but I tend to grind 10-20 pounds of pork sausage at a time. So I upgraded to an inexpensive stand alone ($90) and it was a vast improvement. THAT SAID, cheapie grinders have plastic gears. After a couple of years it broke down, like yours did. So, now I'm going to bite the bullet and (probably) get the least pricey LEM "Big Bite." With only doing 150lbs of grinding a year I don't need a beast, nor could I lift one. Check out LEM vids on YT. Impressive, especially if you're processing 2-3 deer a season. Parts & some great attachments are readily available too. LEM has a huge line of processing equipment for hunters. I'm only a housewife (widowed) so have no use for all that..... but sure looks like fun. Btw, I'm just a gal but even I know that thing you called a "spindle" is an auger. ;-D Enjoy your venison burgers, my friend.

Yes. Theirs a trick. Put the meat in the freezer. Run it through the grinder/stuffer slightly frozen. Nut fully frozen. Takes about an hour in the freezer. It runs through much easier and you won't be so miserable.
When my Mom was doing this, she would finish the grinding with a piece or two of bread to get all the meat out.
I was going to say the same thing. Makes the cleanup so much easier.

So, now I'm going to bite the bullet and (probably) get the least pricey LEM "Big Bite."

Very Informative, thanks alot for all the hints !!!!
This video was very informative, thank you!
Great video. This was the main question I while researching buying one of those mixers.
Are you running the Classic or Artisan Mixer?
I imagine the plastic gears verses the metal gears would factor into the machines lifespan.
Another great video! I was thinking about getting the grinder attachment “for my wife” for Christmas. Have you ever tried grinding rabbit? God bless!!!
We don't grind rabbit. In our opinion, it's a lot of work for a little bit of meat. It is also SO lean, you would almost have to grind in some fat.
One xmas Dad bought Mom tires for her '64 baby blue ragtop Mustang - manual transmission. She was thrilled. Tot off subject but your comment brought back memories.
@@02271953me : Kerry, your post made this old gal smile. I loved my convertible Mustang.
Nice job!
Speed setting 4 is recommended
Which is a better grinder the plastic one you have or metal?
Thanks for the upload. Great advice!!!!
Would you use it to grind all that pork to make sausage with it?
What size kitchen aid mixer are you using?
i have the same attachment for my kenwood mixer !!
After grinding, put two slices of bread through it with a little mustard and you will have yourself a nice Sandwich.
Thanks dude, awesome video.
Just ordered one for my mixer tired of the hand grinding crap
Great review. Thanks for sharing.
Can you tell me the watts/power of you KA mixer?

What size KitchenAde mixer do you use?
spindle is an auger :)

Yes. Theirs a trick. Put the meat in the freezer. Run it through the grinder/stuffer slightly frozen. Nut fully frozen. Takes about an hour in the freezer. It runs through much easier and you won't be so miserable.

Newly folded creases so they probably just purchased it for this.
awesome video.
Be careful how hard you push the meat down mine cracked after 3 years, they do sell a all metal product now,its only 99.95
Great info.
spindle = auger
I wouldn't want to use it for grinding up poultry and rabbit bones to make dog and cat food.
You can run some stale bread through it to clean out any left meat... don't put your fingers in there!!!
It's an auger, so you know
Love me some venison
Thumbs down for safety sake! Unplug before changing attachments.
Can it handle raw chicken bone
