Oh boy you’re gonna get crap for that Aleste comparison! 🤣 But that’s the whole point to making spicy content. I’m actually going to agree that Power Strike II is amazing and insane what they did on the SMS. And though I do really like Super Aleste as it’s also a very good game for me, I would pick PS2 as the most impressive technical achievement and one of Compile’s best games. Super Aleste was also impressive in that it has nearly zero slowdown and the game Compile used to show other developers the SNES was capable of it, during a time where most SNES shooters had crazy slowdown issues like Gradius3 and Super RType. It was Compile showing how it’s done. I’m sure they simplified the graphics a bit for that reason to prioritize performance. So it’s kind of like saying this amazing game is better than this very good one (in terms of technical achievement). But if you get a lot of crap for it point them here. I’m in the camp that Super Aleste is also a really good game but not everyone’s cup of tea, as like you said the gameplay is very different from most Compile games. A lot of environmental hazards and levels focused around them. But if I had to choose a favorite between the two it would be Power Strike! It’s so good I had to buy a physical copy years ago. And the awesome thing about the M2 Aleste collection is you can play it at the proper 50hz speed.
As a teenager a friend & I were playing James Pond 2. My mom accused us of both being on psychedelic drugs because she just overheard us talking about a robot fish that can grow to reach the ceiling saving penguins in Christmas Land from a birthday cake monster. Yeah... the entire game does sound like a drugged up fever dream.
Interesting picks, always good to see some Master System love. :) As far as the backgrounds in James Pond 2 go, try the SMS game on a 50Hz/PAL console. It doesn't improve the gameplay but the game has a few graphical effects (e.g. parallax scrolling, snow outside) that are disabled on a 60Hz machine which are neat to see.
The worst thing about the first SNES Asterix game (besides the idea of Obelix being held captive by the romans) is that the NES version is much better. It doesn't have the ridiculous amount of levels, plays better & it actually has a final boss.
This has kind of convinced me to get that Aleste compilation. I do like Super Aleste though. I got to say I'm not a fan of the James Pond series either. I remember seeing it a lot as a kid. Another Shmup that impresses is Darius 2, called Sagaia on the sms, which looks and sounds incredible and even has parallax. That one is definitely more fun than SNES Darius Twin. I’d also say R-Type on the SMS is better than Super R-Type on SNES
Another fun video and you still have plenty of credibility in my book. The comparison videos are always fun and I hope you’ll give us a best Genesis MegaDrive list with all the new games that have come out the past few years.
Mate I don't know what you were smoking, but there's no way on Earth that any shmup on the Master System is better than Super Aleste on the SNES. You're havin a giraffe.
@@st1ka Winter Games is the big one. Ghostbusters is better in the sense of being far less painful. Space Invaders on the 2600 has way more gameplay options - plus, Tose got rid of the Invader's marching sound! And altered the firing in the most annoying way possible. Among other issues. This should have been a slam dunk for the Famicom, and I began this paragraph expecting the Famicom to win in basic arcade experience, but no - somehow, they failed the most basic homeowrk they were handed.
@@st1ka Glad to help. You put out some of the best retro content, and this was a genius idea for a series. Worth checking out, by the way - Ikari Warriors. The 2600 version is pushing the system to the limits, while the NES port is Micronics, and famous for cheap deaths. I wasn't sure whether to include it, because I suck at the 2600 version. Is it just as cheap, or am I just really bad at twitch shooters that bait you with obvious traps?
@@st1ka Oh! And if you're not above playing dirty - All the games on the Flashback 1? They're NES on a chip. Games like Yar's Revenge take a serious hit to the special effects, because the Famicom can't pull off the 2600's neon laser rainbows.
Great as Power Strike II is, it's not my pick for the best 8-bit shooter. The Guardian Legend is the Compile game that made me fall in love with Compile and with shooters in general. As for Space Megaforce, it's a weird one, but it grew on me. It's the most relaxing, chill shooter I’ve ever played. A weird niche to be sure, but it feels like popping bubble wrap while listening to smooth lounge music. Sometimes that just feels right.
@@ShinoSarna I'm not sure how you'd come to that conclusion. It has 22 vertical shooting levels, which is far more than almost any other game from the period. It also has on-foot areas, but that doesn't mean it skimps on the shooting at all. Quite the opposite.
The master system, never had one but this video will give me the wisdom I need to see this masterpiece in action. You made me remember Ideafix, I loved to death that crazy dog. Lucky Dime Caper man my dad gave me that game for the game gear on Christmas it was an awesome game the music is pretty catchy too. Thank you St1ka for your hard work and this great video.
Regarding Maui Mallard "I think the Mega Drive version is better" - preach, brother. Preach. Maui Mallard is another great example of "less is more". Ostensibly the SNES and PC Cold Shadow games are expanded and refined versions of the Mega Drive game, but doubling the size of the levels and adding a bunch of collectibles turned the game from a tight, focused platformer into a boring, meandering slog. The original Maui Mallard is still one of my favourite Mega Drive games, whereas I usually get fed up with the SNES game before I even reach the second level.
Genesis was great too. Mario is missing, Hotel Mario....Meanwhile SEGA was pumping out Sonic 3, Knuckles among other games. Saturn was the biggest win for The big N here in the states, it did what Nintendo could not, destroy Sonic....Saturn in japan was huge though.
Ótimo vídeo como sempre! Impressionante como adultos barbados podem ser tão infantis por se ofenderem pelos videogames que jogaram na infância, hehehe. Abraço!
The viewing angle of the SNES Ultima games makes me confused and dizzy. It looks like there's always a strong wind blowing making the characters walk sideways
Great video! Happy that you mentioned Asterix, yeah, we here in Brazil enjoyed the cartoons (the comics too, but more the cartoons) My first console was a Master System, Asterix was one of the first games I wanted to buy (couldn't lol) but I rented it many times, and me and my brother would take turns to try and finish it Damn, so many good memories Thanks, it made me happy before falling asleep Edit: Deep Duck Trouble is one of my all time favorites
@@st1ka It completely butchers the original soundtracks with some of the most hilariously inappropriate samples imaginable (xylophones & trumpets = wtf), to the point where it's my go-to example of the SNES sound chip misuse. Pretty sure there's one or two tracks from NG3 that are just straight-up missing and replaced with something else. It's also bizarrely censored in ways that the NES originals weren't. tl;dr it's just an incredible missed opportunity. The original NG trilogy are some of the best action platformers of all time, and this (ostentibly) remaster not only doesn't do anything to improve or elevate them in any real way, it actually makes them worse. Flying Omelette has a review that goes into a bit more detail, check it out if you're interested.
If Sega actually tried here in America, it would've won the heart space of gamers over Nintendo. Master Sytem was light-years better every single time they had the same game, Master Sytsem was better.
I had to resort to emulation for most of these, because I don't actually like half of the games mentioned here, namely James Pond, the first asterix game on the SNES, or the SNES ultima games haha xD
Aw man, the Asterix games looked amazing. I had a Nes in the UK, but I always intended to buy Wonderboy3 and Asterix when I bought my Megadrive and the master converter; sadly, I never did buy yhr converter so I never got either Astterix or Wonderboy. Times just moved too fast back then.
It might sound weird but technically Brazil is NTSC area because it's game systems run at 60Hz and USA region games. Here we use PAL at 60Hz exactly for it being a hindrance for "illegal smuggling of goods" (TVs, VCRs, video game systems).
@@st1ka It's called "PAL-M" exactly because it is a modification of the M broadcasting system (B&W TV) used in the United States. (USA color system is called "NTSC-M") Brazil government paid German firm Telefunken to develop a change to use PAL color encoding under the M system so there would be no need to change the transmitters already installed for broadcasting color video. When Brazil choose to use Japanese ISDB-T system of digital TV they paid the system developers to change the codec from MPEG2 to H.264 even though there isn't any real benefit on doing so. It's just to make sure Japanese TVs can not work here without firmware changes.
@@st1ka Yeah and that's why Brazilian Mega Drives consisted of SEGA Genesis boards with European casing. The ring around the cart slot is red instead of gray to signify it is 60hz.
Good list overall. Super Aleste is still pretty nice with a great OST, the levels are just overly long and the art style less distinct. James Pond 2 has a *lot* of cut content on SMS, not exactly a destruction there though I agree with you on the sfx. Comparing to the MD I would say the Illusion games and Jurassic Park are better than their MD counterparts, and Wonder Boy 3/Monster World 2 is in some ways better than Monster World 3 (though the SMS port of the latter game isn't that great). Oh and I prefer Ninja Gaiden SMS to most of the trilogy package on SNES. Bubble Bobble SMS is better than... not having Bubble Bobble!
To Ultima and Wizardry I would add the often forgotten Rogue to the list of the most influential games not only to RPG, but those games were so loved back in the day that a lot of games can have their lineage traced back to at least one of those 3.
@St1ka I also think that the Master Systems res and limited number of vibrant colours often gave its games a unique cuteness. It didn't require rotating screens, multi layer playfield eye candy. Examples of what most snes games used (again and again) as a gradually boring staple.
Fun fact regarding Donald Duck no Maho no Boushi: If you have a Barcode Battler II and the interface to connect it to the Super Famicom, scanning barcodes while the game is on the password screen will generate passwords based on the barcode used. Not all passwords generated in this way will work, only those already programmed into Donald Duck no Maho no Boushi will have an effect.
@@st1ka Indeed. Epoch, who worked on the SFC game, also created the Barcode Battler family of products. The same functionality can be found in Alice's Paint Adventure, which oddly enough was also a Disney licensed game.
Maybe Columns would fit this topic? At least the music is better on Master System and it has animated backgrounds. Question: what song is that guitar riff starting each segment? For example at 1:00.
Half Spanish - half French. You can imagine how many ours did I spent on the Asterix for the Master System. Fuck, remembering it, I am now on tears! Hahahaha! I'm just a 30 year old old man, now...
My biggest issue with the Maui Mallard game is the camera. It whips around whenever you change direction that it made me feel a little nauseous. Also I think the sprite is a bit too big for the screen which when combined with how fast Maui moves, makes running into enemies and hazards a real problem. I know that it doesn't have an SNES equivalent, but I was hoping when we got to Donald games that you would mention Quackshot for the Genesis.
I wonder if any comparisons can be made involving the Intellivision system? Like, I think I recall my 6-year old self enjoying Burgertime on the Intellivision a lot, but could never get myself interested in the NES or Arcade versions of Burgertime later. But, it could just be that the Intellivision version was the one I played first long ago.
I really need to sit down and play through ultima 4 finally. I've had it on GoG since I started buying games on GoG. The master system version looks the best graphically though.
The GOG version doesn't have any music either. In my opinion, the Master System version is the best "official" version of the game. The fan-made ports are better though.
@@st1ka I like the idea of having a notebook with key words that I need to use to navigate the game on the pc version though. I think that feature would be limited on the MS version.
On real hardware, the Master System version of Robocod has parallax scrolling. It does not work in some emulators for some reason, but on real hardware it does.
Believe it or not, Asterix was pretty big in the US and especially Canada. We watched the TV show all the time, and Asterix and the Great Rescue was one of my family’s first Game Gear games.
Wow I didn't know that. I always assumed Franco-Belgian comic book characters like asterix, tintin and lucky luke were literal unknowns in the US and Canada
I remember the master system’s version of Rampage was WAY BETTER than the original NES version. NES you could only play as Lissy and George. Sega had all 3 monsters. Ralph was my favorite
For Master Systwm, I think it had the better version of: Taz-Mania, RoboCop Vs The Terminator, Jurassic Park, The Jungle Book, Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Battlemaniacs, (The last 2 as the games are not as brutal)
Let me guess. All of Nintendo Old game systems Failed but not switch? So SNES classics wasn't enough to become better? What type of funeral hell are we living to have SNES become hated? So Nintendo is too strict to fix their console? Why? Nintendo need a new CEO to fix the copyright system and will fix their past problems. Won't they? Cause it's only way to prove haters wrong
Good idea for a video, sometimes limitations do lead to more interesting and well designed games. I already was interested in that Aleste collection but I have to get that now, interesting that Power Strike 2 came out almost 2 years after Super Aleste, that might explain why it seems more impressive for the system it's on, although the other had some nice looking levels as well. You do need to play it on hardest difficulty to have fun with it otherwise it can be boring as you just hold down the fire button mindlessly. I don't think it's overrated but considering that some say it is the best on Snes or even of that generation when U.N. Squadron, anything from Konami and Macross especially were all better then I can understand why someone would think that. I have only played S.Aleste so I will have to see if I end up agreeing. I think Zanac is very boring though.

Nice Video and I like the idea of the 2600 battling it out. Some Arcade ports from the 5200 or 7800 can also hold it´s own.
Oh yeah. Though I do need more sugestions, I actually know very little about the Atari 2600 :P
@@st1ka
Winter Games is the big one.
@@juststatedtheobvious9633 I didn't even know there was a space invaders game for the Famicom. thank you for the sugestions. I'll check them out :D
@@st1ka
Glad to help.
@@st1ka
Oh! And if you're not above playing dirty -
All the games on the Flashback 1? They're NES on a chip.
Games like Yar's Revenge take a serious hit to the special effects, because the Famicom can't pull off the 2600's neon laser rainbows.
Power Strike 2 and Asterix for Master System are some of my favourite games 👍 great video St1Ka 👍
Aww thank you! Glad you liked the video :D
Will is correct, Compile stood above the others back then. The Guardian Legend is still an amazing game.
Oh yes, Compile were masters at their craft
Yes I'll also accept Guardian Legend :P
Guardian Legend is more of a top down run'n'gun than a shmup.
@@ShinoSarna I'm not sure how you'd come to that conclusion. It has 22 vertical shooting levels, which is far more than almost any other game from the period. It also has on-foot areas, but that doesn't mean it skimps on the shooting at all. Quite the opposite.
Great video. I wanted to play in Master System games and you give some really interesting option
glad I could help! :D
Pit-Fighter!!! Also, to a lesser exctent Paperboy.
ooh thank you! If I get enough I might do a sequel video! :D
I'm from Colombia and Asterix rocks. I had the full collection, too bad I had to give it away
I LOVED reading the comics as a kid
The master system, never had one but this video will give me the wisdom I need to see this masterpiece in action. You made me remember Ideafix, I loved to death that crazy dog. Lucky Dime Caper man my dad gave me that game for the game gear on Christmas it was an awesome game the music is pretty catchy too. Thank you St1ka for your hard work and this great video.
I'm glad I could help. I also have a top 20 master system games video, but it's an old video so it might not be very good xD
You've found your niche, DESTROYED vids. Keep them up!!
Haha thank you. Ironically, the Brazilian street Fighter video did even better :P
Thank you for this video! I don't know a lot about the Master System library so it's a pleasure to discover these games

Sometimes I think SEGA would sometimes forget the SMS was a console and would put PC stuff into mindlessly 😅
hah! so true! :P
my man pulled it. amazing stuff! not disappointed. have a great day!
Awww thank you!!!
The original Maui Mallard is still one of my favourite Mega Drive games, whereas I usually get fed up with the SNES game before I even reach the second level.
yeah, they messed with the level design and not for the better imo
IIRC the SNES version also took away the bug combo system for some reason. Bomb + boomerang ftw.
Awesome video. I got familiarized with games I didn't know, and that's always great.
Glad you liked it :D
Awesome selection! I agree with you, not a big fan of the James Pond series and that SNES version with those backgrounds looks rough.
Yeah they're quite bad haha
Genesis was great too.
Mario is missing, Hotel Mario....Meanwhile SEGA was pumping out Sonic 3, Knuckles among other games.
Saturn was the biggest win for The big N here in the states, it did what Nintendo could not, destroy Sonic....Saturn in japan was huge though.
This was well worth the wait. Great video, @St1ka!! 👏🏻👏🏻💪🏻💪🏻
Thank you! Glad you liked it :D
Ótimo vídeo como sempre! Impressionante como adultos barbados podem ser tão infantis por se ofenderem pelos videogames que jogaram na infância, hehehe. Abraço!
Haha obrigado! Eu bem que tento
Really great video!! Love the research and definitely agree with the list!! Look forward to the next one!!👍👍😁
thank you! I try! ^^
The viewing angle of the SNES Ultima games makes me confused and dizzy. It looks like there's always a strong wind blowing making the characters walk sideways
Haha
Nice video, man.
I would love Phantasy Star vs Mystic Quest
glad you enjoyed it! :D
I have to say I never enjoyed Mystic Quest much on the SNES.
Awwwwww yes, now we're talking 😁
You just got your credibility back! 🤪🤣😂
But in full seriousness: great video my friend! Keep up the good work! ❤
Aww thank you I try
Great video!
Happy that you mentioned Asterix, yeah, we here in Brazil enjoyed the cartoons (the comics too, but more the cartoons)
My first console was a Master System, Asterix was one of the first games I wanted to buy (couldn't lol) but I rented it many times, and me and my brother would take turns to try and finish it
Damn, so many good memories
Thanks, it made me happy before falling asleep
Edit: Deep Duck Trouble is one of my all time favorites
oh yeah, I know Asterix is pretty popular in Europe and South America :D
In the US it's pretty much unheard of
Even with all the flaws, the "Asteroid Field" stage theme is the reason I hold Space Megaforce dearly in my heart.
That's understandable ^^
what's the name of that fight game at 00:12 where they are fighting on an elevator??? ?!?! been trying to find the name of it since I was a kid!!
Power moves for the super Nintendo
Great list! Ninja Gaiden on the SMS is better than Ninja Gaiden trilogy on the snes!
I thought about that one. But it's hard to compare one game with a compilation remaster
Trilogy is such a piss-poor hackjob, it's honestly amazing.
@@NucleaRaptor I've only played bits and pieces of it. What's wrong with the compilation?
@@NucleaRaptor damn I'll have to check it out
If Sega actually tried here in America, it would've won the heart space of gamers over Nintendo. Master Sytem was light-years better every single time they had the same game, Master Sytsem was better.
great video!. If you run james pond 2 for sms on pal mode, it has parallax scrolling on every level.
I had to resort to emulation for most of these, because I don't actually like half of the games mentioned here, namely James Pond, the first asterix game on the SNES, or the SNES ultima games haha xD
@@st1ka yeah! but you can emulate it in pal mode if you have curiosity.
@@pixelacos ooh thank you for the tip! :D
Great video, dude. I definitely agree with the list. Looking forward to the 2600/NES video. :D
Thank you :D
It might sound weird but technically Brazil is NTSC area because it's game systems run at 60Hz and USA region games. Here we use PAL at 60Hz exactly for it being a hindrance for "illegal smuggling of goods" (TVs, VCRs, video game systems).
Oh interesting. I always thought Brazil was a variation on PAL?
@@leonardoliveira So despite being called Pal-M it's closer to NTSC? Interesting
@@st1ka Yeah and that's why Brazilian Mega Drives consisted of SEGA Genesis boards with European casing. The ring around the cart slot is red instead of gray to signify it is 60hz.
Interesting, thank you so much for the clarification
surprised there was no mention of the nes asterix with the alberto j gonzales ost
Surprising to see someone who knows Ultima
My icon was inspired by the wizardry games. So I'm a fan of early RPGs like Ultima and Wizardry
That was a very enjoyable video!
Thank you :D
Yeah I have considered doing a master system vs genesis video. Maybe some day ^^
I can remember playing super r-type on the snes and feeling shocked by how short, the levels were.
I prefer R-type: The Third Lightning ^^
Dat ballzy coconut kick thumbnail XD
Haha yep xD
To Ultima and Wizardry I would add the often forgotten Rogue to the list of the most influential games not only to RPG, but those games were so loved back in the day that a lot of games can have their lineage traced back to at least one of those 3.
Very true. I forgot to mention rogue
you are walking on thin ice with that headline, styka... hahahaha just kidding bro
Hahaha clearly I've lost all y credibility in the retro community
What’s funny is that I have seen videos suggesting Space Megaforce is the best shooter on the SNES. Just shows shooters weren’t the best on the SNES.
I have to admit I prefer R-type: The third lightning if we're talking snes shmups

I played the master system version of asterix with that adapter for the Sega mega drive. A great game which was very enjoyable.
It's such a fun game! :D
@St1ka I also think that the Master Systems res and limited number of vibrant colours often gave its games a unique cuteness. It didn't require rotating screens, multi layer playfield eye candy. Examples of what most snes games used (again and again) as a gradually boring staple.
Oh yeah completely agreed. Something about the master system's pastel color palate really works towards its favor
Fun fact regarding Donald Duck no Maho no Boushi:
If you have a Barcode Battler II and the interface to connect it to the Super Famicom, scanning barcodes while the game is on the password screen will generate passwords based on the barcode used.
Not all passwords generated in this way will work, only those already programmed into Donald Duck no Maho no Boushi will have an effect.
OMG really? that's amazing
@@st1ka Indeed. Epoch, who worked on the SFC game, also created the Barcode Battler family of products.
The same functionality can be found in Alice's Paint Adventure, which oddly enough was also a Disney licensed game.
@@combatking0 damn that's amazing
Maybe Columns would fit this topic? At least the music is better on Master System and it has animated backgrounds. Question: what song is that guitar riff starting each segment? For example at 1:00.
Oh columns is a good one.
The song is called "ultimate showdown", but this is an instrumental version
Hey hey heyheyhey, yeah pothunter here lol

Half Spanish - half French. You can imagine how many ours did I spent on the Asterix for the Master System. Fuck, remembering it, I am now on tears! Hahahaha! I'm just a 30 year old old man, now...
Aww that's actually really adorable. and I completely understand ^^
Ah sorry 😅
R-Type 1 is another great choice for Master System outperforming the SNES version
Sadly, I love R-type: The Third lightning too much 😅

I wonder if any comparisons can be made involving the Intellivision system? But, it could just be that the Intellivision version was the one I played first long ago.
Oh that be would amazing if we find games where the Intellivision beats the NES

I really need to sit down and play through ultima 4 finally. I've had it on GoG since I started buying games on GoG. The master system version looks the best graphically though.
The GOG version doesn't have any music either. In my opinion, the Master System version is the best "official" version of the game. The fan-made ports are better though.
@@st1ka I like the idea of having a notebook with key words that I need to use to navigate the game on the pc version though. I think that feature would be limited on the MS version.

For Master Systwm, I think it had the better version of: Taz-Mania, RoboCop Vs The Terminator, Jurassic Park, The Jungle Book, Ghouls 'n Ghosts and Battlemaniacs, (The last 2 as the games are not as brutal)
yeah those were great too :D
sega master system truly deserves more love.
So true!
I think Zanac is very boring though.
completely understandable. Power Strike 2 is one of the best SMS games, I highly recommend it! :D
