I recently bought a 14’ with the 6hp, 1973 Evinrude. Top & bottom compression is only at 60. Spark is there. Coils are not happy at all. Suggestions? I’m in 🇨🇦. Not sure if I can find an engine rebuild kit?
Hi Brandon, I have a question, have you ever done a video on changing motors on a remote start boat, like a bass boat? I would like to keep the 9.9hp, for lakes with hp restrictions, but change it to a larger motor for larger lakes, or is it too much of a hassle. I have a hoist.
Don’t bother buying the tool. Look up T Mike (One outboard at a time), of a couple other videos. You just use an ohmmeter, turn the flywheel by hand, (you don’t bolt it down til your adjusted properly).
Great video. I had a slightly stuck drive shaft. I was lucky enough and got it out by pulling the lower unit off center and giving the cord a slow tug...just on revolution and it came out.... lucky I guess (I noted the roll pin was slightly bent...but was able to straighten it out). My question: What is the function of the roll pin? Just curious... Thanks for the video. I'm fixing my 1977 6hp....
Hi again. I thought I had my waterpump job complete. All reassembled and pumping fine. Was going to go out so test fired....no water... Pulled thermostat...found bypass plugged and thermostat krusty...cleaned and re-installed thermostat cover...still no water... Not blocked...just not pumping. Pulled lower unit to find my roll pin mangled...one side bent over... I must have messed up installation. Question...would bent or damaged roll pin explain no water pumping? Could it ruin the impeller? I plan to carefully attach a drill to the shaft with some downward pressure... Wish me luck.
I have a 1979 that when tested with Harbor Freight compression gauge reads 40psi for both cylinders. I tested it with both spark plugs out, full throttle, and used a rope on the flywheel. Its runs and idles great. Previous owner ran straight gas for undetermined amount of time. Could this be the cause of low compression? Maybe cheapy Harbor Freight gauge is faulty? New to outboards so thanks in advance for any advice.
What was the sealant you are using in this video for the water pump wear plate? I tried listening several times and could not get the number (my computer is too old just like me!) When replacing the small waterlines, does fuel line of the correct size work?
Great videos. Thanks. I just inherited a 6R74 and am working my way through your videos. You don't mention the thermostat. Mine didn't have one in it's place. The parts chart shows one. Is it necessary?
Your engine/mechanical skills and knowledge show so strongly when you do the little things clear the threads with a tap and lube the roll pin. Only someone with tons of experience would know to do those things. Make it work for the next guy! Nice work. I am learning tons from this TH-cam of yours!
Hey Brandon, how are you? Can I ask a question about a 1970s 6hp Johnson outboard? So, the new pull cord is installed. And I can start the engine; but as soon as I let my hand off the gas..it doesn’t idle. It just dies. Im thinking it might be the rich/lean adjustment knob. When I screw it in completely, the fuel/air mixture is too lean (I think) and it dies. When I unscrew the brass adjustment knob counterclockwise, I can keep it running so long as I keep my hand revving the engine. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!!
Hi Brandon, could you help me. I have the same motor, but have problèmes when reving it when engage it has no power, rev good when not engage in speed. Il clean the carburator but now need to adjust front knod tuning idle when it at the end how much do you unscrew? And if it dont correct my fast idle speed when engage do you have à idea what it coul be? Thanks Chris.
I’m hav the exact same problem. Have you fixed yours and if so how? I have changed coils and fuel pump but still not revving up properly. I have a 1975 Johnson 6hp. Thanks Video was very helpful
Look up T Mike from Louisiana videos,( or a couple of other videos) he has a very good one showing how to check the coils, & how to set the points. You don’t need that tool that Brandon used, just an ohmmeter. Place the flywheel on, but don’t tighten it down. Turn the flywheel by hand, as soon the ohmmeter shows the circuit broken, (points have opened), the mark on the flywheel should be right between the two marks in the timing plate. If not lift off the flywheel & adjust the points. Also, don’t remove the starter, as Brandon did to get the carb off. Only undo the top two bolts, the starter can then be swung outward enough to gain access to the carb bolt…that will save you a lot of unnecessary work.
What price for that shift clamp I should have heated, the not broken shift handle shaft rotates alright but doesn't pull out & doesn't have the extra indicator or adaptor that you pointed out ? what seller do you recommend ? I got a quote from cable boats US to Australia $35USD + $68USD post !!
Just got one- seems to have a cooling issue. If I run it at full throttle for a good 30 seconds or so, it bogs and dies in a steamy hissing mess. After a few minutes of cooling off it will start back up. Runs fine at half to 3/4 throttle. Should I tear apart the cooling system and rebuild it?
I have the mid 1970’s Johnson 6 Hp version of this outboard. I am watching this video 2 years after you created it. Can you still get rebuild parts for these outboards now that Evinrude-Johnson have gone out of business? Thanks, excellent video.
They have gone under plenty of times, and yes parts are still readily available. But if you need points, buy them from Sierra, OEMs don't work anymore. However, OEM waterpump is the best. Don't buy the cheap ebay/Amazon ones.
These show up on FB mkt place in my area once in a while....people want tooo much for them ($200-$450). Don't realize it takes another $200 in parts to get them running. most require a total overhaul to get them going, yours was mint. Salt water use here. Got a british seagull to work on this winter, got it for $50 last year.
Did a lot of these things, and my 1969 evinrude fisherman 6hp runs great. however, it wont pee. new water pump just like yours, but i didnt do the sealant below the plate. thinking thats my problem.
Do you think if I were to do this to my 70 that it would stop having problems with not having water come out of what I call the “pisser”? I’m about ready to replace the water pump on it so while I’m doing that do you think that’s something I should do while I’m changing the pump? Also I live in Indiana and would what the guy was saying on above comments happen to my motor water would freeze?
Just cleaned and set my points and got everything together after the water pump replacement. Out of curiosity... How much water should I see at startup? I see just a hint of water, then the thermostat opens up after a minute or two and there's a bit of a steam-bath that happens...plenty of water flow at that point.. Sound normal? Engine runs great in any case. Thanks for making this video.
Ehhh, not so much on these; at least in my experience, you don't see any difference in water flow once it's going. Sounds like the pump is just taking its sweet time. OEM pump kit? Or impeller only in origional housing? Sealant above and below the plate? Testing in large deep barrel capable or submerging above the pump?
Is it worth trying to convert a 1973 johnson 6hp long shaft to short shaft if I have a viable parts motor. The long shaft is pretty much all original nice with what appears to be 80 psi compression. Should I attempt this or just find a short shaft
Please tell me. The same motor, the upper cylinder does not work, Spark does not always give a spark. I checked the wires, checked the reel, the carburetor, the fuel filter - everything is fine. I can't understand what the problem is.
@@BrandonsGarage So far so good. Your video is invaluable for someone like me...know barely enough to be dangerous. QUESTION: I'm having trouble finding the powerhead gasket (0387321) for anything less than $60. That's a far cry from the $8.99 for two you mention in the video. Can you point me to your source? You said something about Sierra...
Almost missed the most important tip in the whole video - Use 70's era correct expletives on a 70's motor -Far Out! Groovy! etc - Genius- Thanks so much!
I like the video. Do you know why these shift handles get broken ? I have a 77 6hp Johnson. Long shaft. My handle is still good. I replace the water pump.i removed the lower case where the transmission is. The shaft that changes gears looks to be a little bent. Do you think maybe this is why the handle is getting broke because the bent shaft is not letting it get changed from forward to reverse ?
The handle gets broken two ways. Dumbasses try to force it into gear with the motor NOT running. If you need to do this, just pull the starter rope a bit. People lay the motor in the back of a truck during the drive to the lake- with it sitting in the shift handle.
did you remember to zip tie the fuel line on? also how do you time the motor without the special tool you have,., ? can you just go by the lobes on the shaft?
I know you are mostly an old outboard guy, and usually the smaller units. But, I have an old 1975 Searay SRV175 and it has an omc "stringer" electric shift lower on it. Had it for over 20 years. Nobody makes excellent videos like yours on the internet. It would be super cool, if you got one, and went through the upper and lower on film. A couple videos out there on the impeller. But, most everything is old cameras, still photography, etc. That would be a great resource for us guys that have some wrench turning ability, but haven't gotten into them too much.
I have a 1972 Evenrude 6hp 2 stroke motor that's running ruff, I rebuilt the carb changed the fuel, filter and gas can. It start and ideas fine but when I put it in gear and try to run it adjusting the throttle it gogges down and starts sputtering.
I have this motor on my first boat ever, a Catalina 22 sailboat: "1966 Evinrude Outboard 5 HP angler 5603". It looks very similar. I hope to do everything you just did here. Where did you get all the parts? Thank you!
My water pump impeller is like yours. My impeller looks to be fine. My new kit is like your new kit. The new impeller is way smaller. I felt the new impeller wouldn't move enough water to the engine. So I opted to use my old. What's your opinion. Thanks
Just make one. A ballon pump, bit of hose, a couple clamps, a low pressure gauge, & a 3/8” coarse thread barb to screws into the oil fill or vent hole.
Got a question many of these motors came out with a 2 blade prop and many again with a 3 blade prop. I thought about it for a while and checked around a bit and it seems that the specs and engine parts are the same thru out the years so what is the thinking they had on the different props. I ended up upgrading mine to a 3 blade and the performance seems to be the same as before. So what are your thoughts on the matter?
Great video in going through this 1 little by little. I have a dumb ass question. On my 79 6 ho Evinrude are the hardware metric or American. Yes I'm new to this
Absolutely. I think Brandon may have removed the powerhead for other reasons. He should have mentioned it wasn’t necessary. Just rotate the flywheel slowly by hand as you are dropping the lower end. When the pin lines up, it will come right down.
Where can I get parts for a decent price. I have an 81 7.5 hp I need to go thru but I dont have a lot of experience with boat motors and im have trouble finding parts. I let a friend of mine work on it and he said he got it running so I'd like to go thru it service it up real good and get it in good shape Where I don't have to worry if it'll leave me hanging somewhere.
Wellllll, you'll have to forgo the cost of parts at a decent price. Water pump, fuel pump, ignition parts, etc are all on the expensive side when compared to car parts from the same time. I have a 1980s 4HP and 6HP video that would suit your engine better. I also have a 7.5 I'll be diving into this summer.
The only thing I can see that would stop this impeller from functioning is that the aluminum cover is worn out too much space between the blades in the cover. OMC definitely knows where to put sealant. They didn’t forget anything but you can put it wherever you want. Take note that the top of the Cover wears out and it just can’t work. You do good work but I can see you’re still learning about Johnson motors nobody knows everything.
Well probably watched 4 hrs of your videos ! 😳 today ! I’m collecting old outboards to play with , love your videos and knowledge thankyou for sharing!! 2 Questions where do I get that pump tool for checking gear boxes , and curious what’s a fair price on these old motors ? I know you said you purchased this six hrs , I try to keep mine around 100.00 have several @ 75.00 . What are they worth in good running condition? Love your channel . I hooked!!!😬👍
I usually pay $100 for a non running motor less than 40 HP; usually a junky motor of higher HP can be had for $100-300. An older motor like this in good running condition will usually bring $300. Doesnt seem like much considering the cost to repair it? it isnt! This is a hobby, sometimes you can turn a profit flipping one, but the value is knowing you have a good running reliable motor when you're out on the water. Also, you can usually trade them for something; dirt bike, gokart, etc.

That thingie on the shift rod must be a connector for a remote shifter I would think.
What was the sealant you are using in this video for the water pump wear plate? I tried listening several times and could not get the number (my computer is too old just like me!) When replacing the small waterlines, does fuel line of the correct size work?
Man you’re sharp on those outboards good job I have a 74 Johnson 6 horse myself love that motor
When replacing the handle it comes with two washers i see you left the bigger washer to side and didnt see you install it,is it not needed?
Great videos. Thanks. I just inherited a 6R74 and am working my way through your videos. You don't mention the thermostat. Mine didn't have one in it's place. The parts chart shows one. Is it necessary?
Yeah, it's a good idea to have one in for optimal performance
Your engine/mechanical skills and knowledge show so strongly when you do the little things clear the threads with a tap and lube the roll pin. Only someone with tons of experience would know to do those things. Make it work for the next guy! Nice work. I am learning tons from this TH-cam of yours!
Mine has holes in flywheel too! They for bolts to remove flywheel without puller?
Nope - need puller.
Hey, I've got to get a 1969 Johnson 6 hp that has been sitting for years, running. I'd say your timing is pretty good !
Thanks
Video was very helpful
Love to see a video on setting up the timing with new points and condenser. And how to reset the timing on the flywheel. Thanks
Any tips for replacing the prop seal?
That would be my guess. If you try it, please report back your results.
Testing in large deep barrel capable or submerging above the pump?
would carbon build up be a concern if the compression is higher than normal?
Do you do any work on Johnson from the 50 s
I got a 73 johnson 6 horse. Does throttle position matter when setting timing? Im new to this.
No, but it helps as it moves the plate where you want it to be.
Like, you don't want the starter pinion in the way of your screwdriver.
Thanks.
Is it worth trying to convert a 1973 johnson 6hp long shaft to short shaft if I have a viable parts motor. The long shaft is pretty much all original nice with what appears to be 80 psi compression. Should I attempt this or just find a short shaft
Very thorough. My newly inherited 1970 Johnson 6hp needs a gear shift handle. I think I'll leave the vise grip. I guess I'm a chicken.
Please tell me. The same motor, the upper cylinder does not work, Spark does not always give a spark. I checked the wires, checked the reel, the carburetor, the fuel filter - everything is fine. I can't understand what the problem is.
Well it doesn't sound like you've checked the ignition system?
Couls, points, wires, condenser?
Normally the coil has burnt thru and is shorting out on the stator plate.
What cleaning solution do you use in your ultrasonic cleaner please I’m not having great success with my fluid
Mineral spirits
I have one of these. Getting 75 psi compression on both cylinders. Is it worth the trouble?
75 is probably fine.
I would say it worth it if you need a 6 HP outboard.
Groovy! etc -
Genius- Thanks so much!
Awesome video.
How did you end up adjusting the timing, Is this hard to do?
What would you charge to work on a 6 horse Evinrude
Water pipe grommet?
I have a 1972 Evenrude 6hp 2 stroke motor that's running ruff, I rebuilt the carb changed the fuel, filter and gas can. It start and ideas fine but when I put it in gear and try to run it adjusting the throttle it gogges down and starts sputtering.
I have this motor on my first boat ever, a Catalina 22 sailboat: "1966 Evinrude Outboard 5 HP angler 5603". It looks very similar. I hope to do everything you just did here. Where did you get all the parts? Thank you!
Ebay or marineengine.com
I never changed a impeller. Does it matter which way it gets put on or does it matter which way those tabs facing on it
Yes
@k.whiking4372 thanks. Would u know if this video would be good for a 18 elantra sel
My water pump impeller is like yours. My impeller looks to be fine. My new kit is like your new kit. The new impeller is way smaller. I felt the new impeller wouldn't move enough water to the engine. So I opted to use my old. What's your opinion. Thanks
Where did you get that tool to pressure test the lower end?
Just make one. A ballon pump, bit of hose, a couple clamps, a low pressure gauge, & a 3/8” coarse thread barb to screws into the oil fill or vent hole.
We always used a stevens pressure tester.
You don’t really get any more speed out of the three blade, but it comes out of the go,emquicker,
Hole quicker
I have a 1974 Johnson 6 hp. It’s Super reliable.
Great video in going through this 1 little by little. I have a dumb ass question. On my 79 6 ho Evinrude are the hardware metric or American. Yes I'm new to this
SAE bolts. Many of these were built in Peterborough, Ontario, but it was before Canada went to metric.
Ooouu good my enggine 👍🏿👍🏿
I’am glade I have the cdi ignition. On my Johnson 1977 6hp..
How much would you charge to fix a 1971 Johnson evinrude 6 hp
Where are you located?
@@BrandonsGarage I’m in resaca ga
Hi there, do you know the consumption per hour of this outboard?
Thanks
yes i have on a 1973. i troll with it for days, 4 gallon tank. uses hardly any fuel.
why is that roll pin on the drive shaft even there? wish i would’ve watched this video first. i finally figured it out but dang!
It's there for the spring to but up against to hold the seal up to the motor.
@@outboardfixer what a pita to figure that one out
The pin drives the cup seal, otherwise it would not turn. Also keeps those 6 upper parts in place
So not possible to change the water pump without removing the power head?
On a 6 HP, you absolutely can.
Absolutely. I think Brandon may have removed the powerhead for other reasons. He should have mentioned it wasn’t necessary. Just rotate the flywheel slowly by hand as you are dropping the lower end. When the pin lines up, it will come right down.
Awesome # 2
The new nice shift piece seems a little big
Can you work on my 6hp evinrude?!
anyone who can tell where the cooling water output is located on this motor?
Exhaust hole on the back of the engine
at 23.52 where do i get that part ///how much are they
about $60

@@BrandonsGarage thanks well done
Thanks , yea I’m having fun playing with these old 2 strokes! Amazed how good they where and are!!!😬👍
