      After decades of monopoly control over the Desktop PC, the time to replace Windows, with better OS - is NOW.

    • @ErdrickHero
      @ErdrickHero ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@aroundmusic4700 Right... but the Steam Deck *is* a PC. It's an all-in-one like a laptop, and it's CPU and GPU are probably slightly modified compared to their closest off-the-shelf counterparts, but at the end of the day, it's a PC. I haven't finished the video yet, perhaps it will explain, but I don't see why this should stop Valve from releasing the latest SteamOS on standard PC hardware. It sounds to me like a matter of drivers, and from what I understand, most drivers are pretty much universal for all Linux distros (so long as the kernel is new enough) - so the appropriate standard drivers could be obtained online if not just shipped with the OS itself.
      I haven't had the opportunity to actually use the Steam Deck, but I suppose it's UI is very controller-centric. If input methods are a problem, why can't the user just plug in a controller?
      Not only that , but SteamOS already *has* been released for standard PCs, they just stopped updating it. Granted, I understand the new version is based on Arch while the previous versions were Debian-based, but was it really that big of a deal to convert the PC version to Arch?
      The only explanation I can think of is that the latest SteamOS was rebuilt entirely from scratch, making all code for previous versions irrelevant. But that still doesn't explain why it can't *just work* on standard PC hardware.
      (OK, now I can go back to the video. Boy would it be silly if the video explains all this.)

    The newest version fixed some of the problems with not normal display sizes. Also in my testing in Cyberpunk 2077 on high settings its 90.5fps on Vanilla Arch no matter what I do, gamemode, gamescope, etc. On SteamOS4 it runs with the same settings 2580x1080 high settings at 119.6fps. I had to do nothing. Also all other games I have tried ran super smooth and OMG I switched my main PC distro over to HoloOS right now. Oh and by default all games use Proton mode, unless you go in and change it, which I had to do for City Skylines to get it to run. Then with Distrobox you can do whatever you want, like installing the AMD GPU drivers so you get GPU rendering in Blender.

    • @davejay6855
      @davejay6855 ปีที่แล้ว

      Might as well go with 4K monitor at that point, as there is a LOT of stuff that the 1080 is not going to do at or above your monitor’s refresh rate when trying to render 1440p natively, it still does modern games just fine at 1080p (hence the number/name) but not much further… and dropping down to 1080 instead of 1440p natively does not scale very nicely at all, unless you want to drop all the way down to 720p and do a straight squaring of pixels…
      …or just keep the 1080 with a 1080p screen and not worry about any of that.

      I did nothing except pass the GPU through. This was kind of a hassle to do, since I don't have a second one, or an iGPU.
      Without a supported GPU, Gamescope can get a bit buggy and you can only boot in rescue mode to change the default configuration to the Desktop mode. However you still wouldn't be abel to use the Game-Mode / Gamescope.

    This version of HoloISO have been archived, but there's a new version of it and it's great, it's HoloISO immutable which I consider to be even better than ChimeraOS and Bazzite. It would be cool to see your take on it, and maybe let more people know about it
    I used to use HoloISO up until it was abandoned, then I tried a few SteamOS like distros, like ChimeraOS which I don't like the Gnome desktop, so I tried Bazzite and it was great for games but buggy, it'd never turn off my PC, and freeze on shutting down Steam, requiring a hard shutdown which I hate it. So went back to ChimeraOS but couldn't wait to ditch it, because of the Gnome desktop which to me it's terrible to use. That's when I found out about the new version of HoloISO which I'm using right now.
    One of the main plus about HoloISO is that out of the three HoloISO, ChimeraOS and Bazzite, HoloISO gives the best performance on my AMD pc, plus it also have a nice desktop which I can actually do everything with only a DS4 controller (like browsing YT and writing this)
    Now this new HoloISO isn't completely perfect, as it will freeze when shutting down from game mode, just like Bazzite, but I found out that it will shut down properly from desktop mode
    I gave my other PC to my sister with ChimeraOS installed, but as she saw me using HoloISO, the first thing she said was: Can I have that installed on my PC too? lol. And shes loving it so far, as we both use our PCs hooked to flat screen TVs, her using a 47"Sony Bravia and I use a 50" Samsung smart TV which also have a cool game mode setting, and it's been great for when you just want to use your PC from the couch without having to bother M&K.
    The best all in one console/PC experience

      The only recommended hardware is technically only the Steam Deck, as Valve didn't release an ISO yet.
      The forks like the now unmainained Holo ISO also suffered from some limitations with NVIDIA hardware.
      You can however, look into installing an OS without a GUI, install Gamescope and auto start it. It has a -steamdeck (I think) parameter which makes the GUI completely identical to SteamOS.

    If people think Steam isn't for Linux then try SteamOS and quit complaining Valve apparently is favoring Linux over Windows lately what if you woke up and had no CHOICE but to switch to Linux to play Steam games because Windows is unreliable for Steam? I think people who complain about Linux need to try it out first especially SteamOS before they start complaining because it looks like Valve is gonna make games more available on Linux later on games like Sonic Frontiers are already making progress and is also a Linux game. If you have your doubts then wait until Valve cuts the cable on Windows once and for all for being a security hazard I tried Steam on Garuda Dragonized it's SIMILAR to a SteamOS and looks BETTER than modern day Windows it seems we know Linux might claim victory in regards of Steam anyone who hates Linux don't use Steam Deck because it's aimed at Linux.

      Nvidia cards are not supported in "SteamOS 3" as yet. Linux is plug and play, no driver installs required ( apart from nvidia ). IF your hardware is supported it'll just work, if it doesn't then there is no Linux support from the manufacturer and that's it, end of conversation. Windows is the only system that requires the user to add hardware support/drivers. You don't have to do that with MAC, ChromeOS or Linux.
