For the record. SteamOS is a highly specialized linux distro for entertainment purposes and not much else. If you still want a good Linux OS, you want a full Linux distro, like mint.
same boat... I have a rog asus laptop, and it boots just fine to install. then once it finishes... it boots to a black screen with the (-) and I can't even type coz it deletes itself super fast :( I do have a deck tho... lol but I wanted to test on the laptop first

Typically with Linux distros, one types the command 'startx' and press (do not type the ' marks). If all is set up, it should load a GUI. If not, you get an error message and then get to learn about drivers and reading the /var/log/message file for what might have gone wrong.

Unfortunately, the .ISO i chose was the "Automatic version." It couldn't find available space sonit installed on my 32 gb flashdrive.... 😢

Go to BIOS settings, and set the boot device as USB STICK and restart. It has to boot into SteamOS. Otherwise you need to recreate a bootable USB again. Try ventoy method too.

This installation failed even on a generic Intel CPU (no Nvidia). If you want Steam just install a Debian based distro or Arch if you are more familiar with Linux and ditch these hot garbage OSes.

Attempt to plug in your display into the motherboard and not the GPU. If it works, then there is an issue with NVIDIA support. Install the OS using the integrated graphics then install NVIDIA drivers later in the plasma interface. If you are still having issues, then you may need to install another OS like the user above suggested.
It's not an official OS for PC by ValvE. The community has merely taken the OS and made it compatible with hardware that isn't the Steam Deck, since HoloISO is made specifically only for the Deck's hardware. At the same time, the only hardware this OS will work on is AMD (CPU & GPU), since that's the hardware the Deck uses

The guide is not complete without saying how to install steamos on computers without uefi bios.
you cant i think steam os requires uefi same with chimera but you can port over steam os features on any arch linux with some terminal prompts
