My takeaway from this is that it's not really about natural vs. synthetic, but thick and soft vs. thin and/or stiff. Your synthetic brushes had very few bristles; they're obviously made for blending paints. I would think one could get a thick, soft & fluffy synthetic brush that would do just as well and cost far less than natural bristles. Am I wrong? And I assume the advantage of fan brushes is that they cover a wider area.

I haven't found many synthetic brushes that are fluffy enough. We compared fan brushes of the same size and the natural bristles were nearly always better at holding and evenly distributing glaze. You're right that paintbrushes aren't meant for glazing and don't apply as well. Makeup brushes are a good substitute, though. ~Cara

Never let brushes sit or soak in water very long. It ruins the ferules and then you have to get a new brush! Also what's important is how evenly the brush can apply the glaze to your piece.
