  • The Canon EF-S 10-18mm IS STM is one of the smallest and cheapest super wide angle zoom lenses for any APS-C camera system. It is the lens I have on my Canon 500d / t2i which I still use to this day to film myself when I am out in the streets doing spontaneous photoshoots with strangers. Now after 800 of those Videos it was time fo a thorough review. As always my reviews are full of real world photographs and insights from somebody that actually used the gear a lot before I talk about it. Let's dive in into what images you can create with it and how it turned out compared to the other premium lenses I use on my bigger Full Frame Cameras - let's go!

    And this ladies and gentlemen, is the reason why running out to buy super expensive gear is NOT going to make you a great photographer overnight. Its all about who is holding the camera and how much passion and work you've put into it.

    Thank you so much for this! This was very helpful for me with my new lens! I absolutely LOVE your outlook with photography! The emotional aspect and how YOU SEE IT! So many are caught up in the technical aspect of it. It’s all about what YOU Love ❤️ and how you view your photos! 💕

    Beautiful images, as always. I love your style and your way of thinking. You sure stretched every ounce of dynamic range out of that old Canon. I'm surprised at the bright cloud detail in some of those images.

    Great shots as usual, thanks. This is one of those "absolutely impossible to beat for the money" lenses. Good for fighting the 4k crop on the EOS R as well (can be hacked to fit a 5D IV or SpeedBooster for the GH5 as well)
    If I don't find a deal on the 16-35mm f/4 IS, maybe I will just get one for the EOS R crop mode, because why the hell not, it is almost given away for its abilities.

    Sold American. I just bought an SL2, refresh from T3i, and I'm still using the old kit lenses. I knew I needed new glass for my upcoming trip to Switzerland and Germany, and seeing your landscapes, real estate, and architecture shots sold me.

      Lovely little camera, isn't it? :)
      I bought my Canon 200D (SL2 for Americans :p) in January this year, and I absolutely love it!
      If you use one of the Canon "Pancake"-lenses (I use the 24mm f/2.8 STM) on it, it weighs absolutely nothing!
      Very easy to hold. :)

      @o0L4nc3r0o 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@senghongleng9448 I already have the lens by now, and I can say that it's really awesome :)
      Weight is only 240gram, so it's very lightweight. The Image Stabilizer is very convenient as well ;)
      Also, because it's an actual Canon-lens, I can say that the focussing combined with my Canon EOS 200D is very fast and quiet.
      The Dual-Pixel Autofocus has no issues with this lens and works equally fast. :)
      Money well spent!

    Hi. I a beginner about lenses and I am searching for wide angle lens. I'm torn (kind of) between the canon 10-18 mm lens with image stabilization but with f/4.5 and 10-22 mm lens but without image stabilization with f/3.5. I dont know if you are familiar of the two lenses but in your opinion, which lens should be better? Thank youu

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 10-18mm is newer cheaper and has IS, I would go for the 10-18 STM. I got it now for many years and took many images with it, but I also did around 978 Videos on this channel filming my photoshoots with that one lens. I know people who have the 10-22, but I would go for the 10-18. Anyway, both lenses will give you great super wide images, so you are in a win win situation ;)

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Supun, this lens is only for crops sensors, it doesn't work on full frame. Although you can use it on the full frame Eos R and RP as the adapter can use EF and EF-S lenses. But in general it was made for something like a 77D :) And for that price it is one of the best super wides available + great AF + Image stabilization.

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It is a great cheap affordable small lightweight super wide for apse cameras. at this price you can't go wrong and it delivers really great images. For full frame I love the 20mm f2.8 lens, you will also find a review on my channel with many portraits in it. But in general the 10-18mm STM is a hell of a lens for the APSC system.

      Yes you can use it as a super wide angle lens the same way as on apsc cameras with the ef r adapter that comes with the r or rp. But the resolution will be lower than with r or ef lenses which doesn't affect really the image quality or the look.

    •  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends - I don't do night photography, so I am not an expert in that. If you want to photograph stars I would go for a wider aperture. If you are on a budget there are some Samyang or Walimex Ultrawide angle lenses with f2.8 apertures. If you want to photograph buildings and stuff then this lens and a tripod will give you great results.

  • @photorekastudio8528
    @photorekastudio8528 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    I own this lens. How is this possible ! I agree with those architecture and wide shots but some of your images especially first few portraits images have a super bokeh effect and they don't look like shooting from close distance because there is no distortion effect. Only those large aperture lenses can do it. As far as I know the maximum aperture that this lens can produce is f4.5, how did you shoot it so blurry (bokeh background)? Unless you use post-production. Also I saw the small video display in your main video. The lens you used doesn't seem to be this lens. This is a bit misleading for those want to buy it.

    •  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I will take a deep look at it, I did not intend to show images that were shot with another lens. Thank you for noticing, I will take a look at it tonight. Yet, you got many many images here to get an idea of what you can get with an old apsc camera and this lens (or on the r or rp)

  • @dipimage1935
    @dipimage1935 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    Beautiful images, man, but be careful, distort the architecture is a serious ill attribute of your indoor photography. The magic of the wide lens got you and you can't understand that there isn't at least one interior designer that made the plan to renovate a space based on the room's geometry that pictures have. One advice that I can give to you is study more about interior photography, and after a whyle you will not believe how you are mistakenly shooting now. Scuse me and please don't think that I am making myself a smart pants.
    Although, thank you for reviewing this cheap lens, on such a cheap camera. My third back-up camera is a 700D, the first back-up is a markIII and the equipment I shoot on is an EOS R. Because we are in 2019. Think about this ;) This movie that I am commenting on is made in 2019, march. Talking about photos with furious noise made with a camera that was lunched in 2013, more than 5 years ago. Meaning 2-3 electronic generations ago... Think about this

    •  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Dip Image, thank you for your feedback and thoughts. There is no need for a newer camera, as not the camera is the tool to take images but the photographer. The Eos R, Mark III, 700D or 550D all do the job. It will just be harder for the photographer on older gear and therefor it is more inspirational when it works. Therefor I embrace old and cheap gear to show that you don't need the new and expensive.

      You have the opportunity to write something significant and then all you get to write is this.

      I dont care what I get to write or not. Being a loyal observer, I just wanted to highlight the thing I didnt like.

      How can I help you?

      @ Some of your images, especially the first few portrait photos with super bokeh, they do not look like they were taken with this lens. The maximum f number of this lens is only f4.5! Also I saw that you tried to cover the lens you actually used to shoot those portraits.

      @ You are cheating and misleading the audience. This is totally unacceptable. How can you say that the photos taken by other lenses are taken by this lens?

      You sound really unhappy with yourself, I hope you will find peace within you.

    All I see is blurred backgrounds and bad use of tonal contrast sharpening, structure.. Etc.. You get the wow from people that don't know better.. Just saying. Nothing interesting really. Try to come up with some interesting project if you live from photography and TH-cam

      Hi Amaro, thank you very much for your feedback! It is always nice to hear some critical thoughts, so it was really nice to read yours. I don't make money with youtube, it is a hobby. My main job is wedding photography, but that has nothing to do with this youtube channel. I just photographed 101 people on one weekend on the streets of Düsseldorf and everybody got all images for free as always. We make a gallery also in Düsseldorf with 101 big printed images and everybody get all their images also for free. I pay for it. That is I think a worthwhile project.
      I'd love to hear your feedback on my other videos - you will find over 1250 videos which make this channel the biggest photography channel on youtube so far. Love from Germany, Dirksón!
