I liked this video a lot. A little bit of critique: The distortion that you're getting from your wide angle shots due to being closer to the subject, not because the shot was on a wide angle lens. This is called perspective distortion and is not to be confused with optical distortion. The closer you physically get to any object with any lens, the larger it becomes relative to the background. Therefore, there is no difference between cropping a shot from a wide lens and a shot from a mid-range or telephoto lens (assuming there is no optical distortion). The distortions at the edges of your frame, on the other hand, ARE optical distortions and should not be confused with the distortion that you see when you get physically close to your subjects. Thank you for the video and the information. I did find the music distracting too as others pointed out and struggled to follow what you were saying. Also I'd recommend finding a room without an echo or invest in some sound proofing blankets that can be removed after you finish shooting. The echo made things worse. I hope you find this feedback somehow useful.

Wide angles can be used brilliantly for shooting portraits in relation to the environment. All you have to do is back up (because what you're seeing is actually perspective distortion, not lens distortion) and then shoot the person from a low angle against an interesting background
So nice to see a TH-camr talking about photography and not using 5000$ equipment. A decent camera body and lens is enough if you know what you're doing!

Two creative ways to use wide angle for portraits. First, I like over the shoulder where there’s a second person in the frame but you only see the back or side of their head. Second, is to position the lens vertically and center the subject this will make their legs appear longer.
Totally agree with needing a strong foreground in w/a photography... I do like a very distinctive F/G subject. I don't like using a w/a lens just because I want to include more side to side imagery. My solution to only having a w/a lens on my camera is to carry a pair of cameras with different focal length lenses...

A very useful explanation. I've noticed that shallow DOF is not important in these kind of photos so you don't really need a very expensive 1.4 lens for wide angle shots. A wide angle lens only distorts if you get up close. Move back and take a photo of a person with a wide angle lens, then crop the photo. You will see no distortion.
Great video, lots of VERY useful information - thank you! If I may make one suggestion though...perhaps leave the music out or at least choose quieter music without lyrics. It can be a little distracting to your message (which is awesome 😊)
I just bought a nikon d3400 with both the 18-55 and the 70-300 lenses.... and I'm going on an Alaskan cruise.... i know those lenses are good for skme things... but with all the beautiful landscapes there, I'm sure i might need a wide angle lens.... can you reccomend one i can use from the boat and still get those beautiful shots?? Please help
The first tip should be to reject any tip masquerading as a rule. The second tip should be if everyone shoots the same way, it’s no longer creative. The third tip is to simplify your subject. If you have an impressive mountain you want to shoot, look for an interesting angle or a supporting actor to give it context, but DO NOT feel your photo is going to be massively improved by shooting through a bunch of ground-level wildflowers or focus on foreground rocks.

An ultra wide lens can be a fantastic choice for shooting portraits if used correctly. I use mine all the time for environmental portraits.
