Canon 10-18mm Vs. Nikkor 10-20mm Shootout (With Wide Angle Photography Tips)

  • The Canon 10-18mm F4.5-5.6 is legendarily sharp, inexpensive lens. Nikon has just joined the budget wide angle fray with the Nikkor 10-20mm F4.5-5.6. The Camera Store's Chris Niccolls took both lenses to Banff to compare both options, and offer some advice for photographers new to wide angle photography.

    As a long time ultra wide angle lens fanatic, I'd like to offer some advice that I find really helps:
    Treat UWA lenses in a similar way to how you would treat a fast prime wide open, only instead of isolating your subject in focus, you are isolating the subject in space.
    Don't try to capture an entire scene like a panorama, that will just look flat, lifeless and boring.
    Find a subject for your photo, like a tree, stone, fence post, and use the wide lens to push everything else in the image way back.

    • @j-man72b72
      @j-man72b72 6 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I'll add to that, use leading lines to help lead the eye through the frame, and have subjects at different distances at the power points for the rule of thirds.
      If you find UWA intimidating, force yourself to use it as much as you can, emulate what others have done, and most importantly, experiment like crazy, eventually you'll train your eye and it will become a lens that is fun to shoot.
      I love my Voigtlander 15III.

    I live in a wide open water view modest cabin home. I walked out back after getting this Nikon 10mm to 20mm lens which was cheap used. It was mint condition and I paired it with the Nikon D5300 my twin had given me...keeping in mind I do have a Sony A73 with 4 lenses for photography. I took that Nikon D5300 out back during a brilliant sunset, pinks, purples and sun rays. IT KILLED IT! I am part of a photography group online where most of them have all the expensive gear...they flipped out over my pictures I have been posting with that lens! I have photos published in a book I took with the Nikkor 70m to 300mm lens on that camera. People are painting some of my photographs! I took a crystal clear landscape style photo of a marina in bright sun with zero issues not a single area had any less then perfect focus...I was shocked! I could sell that so easily!! It is gorgeous! Its not just your gear but the photographer behind it. Knowing how to get the most out of our lenses we can afford. Not everyone can replace cameras or buy these brand new $2,000 lenses today...I encourage others to take another look at used gear that may set them up with better work and once they can save up, then get the best if that is what they can manage later. So to summarize, my experience is yes on only low light but if you see good colors it will perform with your other settings done correctly.

    When I opted for the Canon 80D vs. going with the 6D mkII this year, I added the 10-18mm to my kit, and while it might feel a bit embarrassing in the hand, it performs quite well on the camera.

    The EF-S Canon 10-18 is one of the main reasons I still keep my T3i around. It's great for run and gun landscapes. Simple inexpensive kit I can toss in the center console of my car and grab a shot if I see something cool while out driving. I've heard it's a great vlogging lens too.

    I have the Canon 10-22mm and it's an excellent lens to have taking pictures of wide vistas. I'm mostly concerned about the linearity of the horizon when shooting and have to adjust position to make sure the horizon is straight otherwise the image will be distorted. Great video. I didn't notice any vignetting which wide angle lenses usually have

    Very enjoyable. Fuji does make the 10-24 (15-36 equivalent). I find ultrawides incredibly useful indoors in tight spaces - of course real estate agents love them, but for my purposes they're wonderful also for shooting music rehearsals, shooting crowds and exhibitors at indoor art and craft shows, and for shooting in school classrooms, where you can frame a nice close-up of a child at work or interacting with a teacher (not too close to the edges of the frame!), and still show the surrounding environment.

I shoot in AV mode, because i am not yet fast enough or knowledgeable enough to go full manual.

    Wife has D3300 with the 3 AF-P lens kit and she uses the 10-20 most. I have a honkin Nikon rig but steal her little set whenever I can. Now that Canon sensors are catching up, I’m eyeing the SL2. I want that canon 24mm pancake - something important to me that Nikon does not have in DX. Add this 11-18 and I’m set for a handy little day rig. We may end up with both of these.... a timely segment.

    Ultra Wide lens is great for indoor use like in museums and so on, but I too have a hard time using one outdoors unless I just happen to be in an awesome place with nothing but beauty in every inch of the scene. Otherwise, I end up with the subject appearing too far away or something ugly/out of place in the scene. If possible, being closer to the subject certainly helps. I do like to have a very wide zoom available for certain scenes, but I honestly don't use it that much.

    @shizenjapan 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I am a Nikon user and have the 10-20mm lens. It takes very clear photos, especially on a sunny day. Like any wide angle lens they are designed to capture a lot so you need to use a large dof. You will get the best images especially landscape at between f8-f16. Also you need your camera set to matrix metering not spot or centre weighted. Get your camera settings correct and you will be able to take some amazingly clear and beautiful photos.
    With so many reviews I see, this one is an exception, people say this lens is crap or that lens is crap, focusing is not good, etc, etc. A lot of times they just have not set the camera correctly for the lens and subject that they are trying to photograph. I can also get some amazingly good photos with my kit lens that I still have the 18-55mm. Get your settings correct and you will get good clear photos with most modern lenses these days.

And , AS af isnt all that important with mirrorless and wideangle, the samyang 12mm f2 is really worth mention ing. Fixed at that angle is a versatility concern and 2mm matter, but ID take that lowlight ultrawide any day over these2

      @RobertoPavan 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. The 10-24 is MUCH more expensive.

    The reason why I - and millions of others - still shoot Canon : the lenses. The 10-18mm is perfectly good and cheap as chips. Fuji owners have to shell out nearly a grand for the same. Yes the Fuji is better made, but the best lens is the one you can afford to buy.

      You can't even compare those two lenses.

      Loopsrainforest Why not? They're both the cheapest options on each system for a ultra wide zoom. Is there a cheaper Fuji lens that I missed?

      Like Saurat wrote the Fuji's way more expensive with a better build quality & the Fuji is way sharper than the Canon APSC ultra wide zooms. I owned the more expensive Canon EF-S 10-24mm & really enjoyed it & would even put it at par or better the Canon 17-40 L on FF but the Fuji blows them away & I really wanted to hate it. Its not weather resistant & its not a 2.8. My plan was to stick with primes but the images I kept seeing from that lens blew me away so I ended up buying it in the end & its pretty great.

      Fujinon lenses have been around nearly as long as canon, they have been making Cine lenses that cost nearly as much as a house for many years before they started making mirrorless prosumer cameras. I feel like their X-mount system has some of that legacy behind it. I hope they put some of their IS tech into IBIS in the future.

      Buy F Mount lenses and even if you change 35mm systems your lenses are not automatically obsoleted. That’s a vast and valuable real option value there.

    Was that nikon picture (the one comparing sharpness) taken with VR on or off? I find that the VR on the AF-P 18-55mm reduces the sharpness of the image and only has the benefit of less camera shake at slower shutter speeds.
    I turn VR off when shooting during adequate lighting, it's noticeably sharper when off. Perhaps the same with the 10-20mm? This strange behavior doesn't apply to the af-p 70-300mm though.

      well realistically VR only impacts image quality when A) you are using a tripod or B) are using a high shutter speed. Because if there is proper compensation already for hand shake like those two would.....then the VR tech tries to compensate anyway and actually causes shake on it's own (or something along those lines)

    Cheap Fuji Lens, something like a 10-18 XC 4.5-6.3? Would be cool, yes. But first V2 of the 10-24 f4 please with WR and a aperture ring with hard stops.

    How is the Canon EF-S 10-22 compare in sharpness to the 10-18. I really enjoyed the 10-22 ten years ago & found it was the only EF-S lens that was worth a damn. Pretty sad Canon doesn't make L worthy glass for APSC.

    Worth mentioning is that 10mm on a Nikon 1.5 crop is going to result in a wider angle of view than 10mm on a Canon 1.6 crop. And why were all your Nikon examples so massively colour-shifted to yellow?
