Visage was basically a studio band that came together from various bands and turned out several huge club hits ... long vesions and remixes were great .. very few live performances but nobody cared when you had 6-7 min versions of their music to dance to! Cheers
I remember seeing this when it first aired. This was filmed at the Camden Palace, my mate was there when they recorded it. Completely mimed, as Steve was never the greatest live singer, something he freely admitted when no one else was around! I bumped into him a few times at the Camden Palace but as the H started taking it's toll he wasn't pleasant to be around. Such a shame, he was a lovely guy sometimes. Keyboard players are Rusty Egan, Billy Currie & Chris Cross. Midge being conspicuous by his absence... Pretty sure the guitarist is John McGeogh. God I miss the Camden Palace in the 80's...
@@StrategyInformer-sjgold I had to watch this 3 times to see him - the video is quite blurry - but yes that is Billy in the black shirt knocking about on those keys. I don't like the fact that it's completely miming to a song - nothing is live here. But if it's coin in pocket for them all, more power to them.
best ever Visage track - when The Anvil album (heh!... as it was called) came out I was working in Our Price - couldn't stop me putting this on the deck... the segue between Damned Don't Cry and this track is superb. Not seen this (ahem) live performance before - great post
i was there at the camden papalce when this was recorded for 'the tube'. fan club members were invited to see visage perform 'live' for a couple of songs
Just discovering all these great tunes from Visage. Too bad I was not exposed to this 30 years ago. Sigh. All I knew was Fade To Grey and that was a brief weird moment that I did not pursue. What could have been. Anyway now in mid life, this is great to finally discover as it's making me feel younger. Got to get me a leather jacket!
@LiteracyLabyrinth noooooooooooooooooooo this is SO much more solid! I think this is one of the best tracks ever from that phase of electronic music. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion... ,-)
Visage were a studio band. They were never meant to perform live. This is why some things should have been left alone - even back in 1983. I cringed even when I watched THIS on 'The Tube' back then as it is clear it wasn't even live...but mostly mimed - and at The Camden Palace too FFS!! Two great albums (Visage / The Anvil) one singles compilation (Fade To Grey), and all the singles between 1980 and 1982. That's all you need really. They ceased to be of any relevance after that.
@1967nj Good spot. I believe there was a bit of "controversy" over this when it was shown (it is DEFINITELY mimed). I even recall some gig where the play back tape they were miming to failed and caught them out! Still, doesn't deter from what is probably their best track. Good to see Billy, Rusty and Midge too (sorry, khorrumg, but it's not John McGeoch - he didn't even play on the Anvil album)
Thank you for this. I've heard the song on internet radio, and now I get to see what the lead singer actually looks like. He doesn't have much of a stage presence though. He just stands there. It takes of charisma to be successful in the music business, just ask Gahan from Depeche Mode, he would know. Maybe that's why Visage aren't together now, who knows. The song is still cool though, I will add it to my favorites.
They were only a studio band and the real geniuses were Billy Curry and Midge Ure. Strange was the face and voice, but he rode on the coat-tails of other gifted musicians.
@TheGodParticle I thought Dave Formula was on synths, not sure who it is on lead in the vid but Midge played it on the album. Anyway, whoever he is, he doesn't "mime" the lead parts very well either... Midge played lead I think cos John McGeoch wasn't able to play on this album. The lead guitar is great on this track, credit to Midge.
This was proto type industrial if you ask me, especially the German version. Love love love that screeching guitar which I am guessing was Midge Ure as it's very Ultravoxy.
@martynpank What do you mean "single you out"? Yours just happened to be the most recent post mentioning the gay topic, so it's where I hit reply. I wasn't having a go at you at all. I was just simply wondering, aloud(typing-wise), what people find "gay" about the clip. Or whether they are talking specifically about the video clip being gay, or talking about New Romantics in general (for the record some of them were hetero).
But just about every band on that show was instructed to mime. That's just how it was, same with on TOTP. I don't know why, and it's not the band's fault, but that's just how it is...
i can see rusty and billy but no midge, i guess that was dave on lead but i thought he was a bassest. i think visage were a free for all with pretty boy steve at the front. great times
@martynpank I don't get it, people are saying this looks gay or something? What's so gay about it? It just seems dark/futuristic to me. Is it only because the decade and the "New Romantic" associations?
now Stephen Clarke from Loughborough has got garry whiting from Leicester as his proper gay partner forever together and garry whitingloves his music of visage and very same music and proper stuff and steve strange is a very good singer too
The keyboard players appear to be Billy Currie and I am guessing Chris Cross. Not sure who is on guitar - he is trying to look like McGeogh but pretty sure it aint him. Could do with a better quality video to be sure. Maybe the people who have said on here they were there could enlighten us?
My personal opinion is this song is FAR BETTER!!! than FADE TO GREY But, everyone has their favourite I would rather listen to this than FADE TO GREY. Although F to G is a good song but, anyday of the week I would have this instead personal opinion & child's other people have their own.
@xreddragonx I don't understand why you have singled me out? I'm not homophobic! It's true that the music came from the 'Gay' scene in the late 70's, early 80's. But the New Romantics took bands like Visage, into the Main-stream. As I mentioned before, I could not care if you have 15 heads! If you make good music, I will buy it!
Visage was basically a studio band that came together from various bands and turned out several huge club hits ... long vesions and remixes were great .. very few live performances but nobody cared when you had 6-7 min versions of their music to dance to!
Cheers
Strange and Eagan were the weak links in the band, talentless cunts.
Steve Strange - ein Künstler, der viel zu früh verstorben ist! Das 1. und 2. VISAGE-Album finde ich immer noch großartig!❤

God I miss the Camden Palace in the 80's...
It is the much missed John.
This got played regularly at the Camden palace thursdays I went often Saw Divine live there .
By 'H', I'm assuming you mean the drug, Heroin ?
That's some nasty sh 1t right there - no wonder he kicked the bucket so young !
sound like a pre-industrial song.
good sound, very very very good
Darkwave/industrial
Wow....! I believe that is Billy Currie from Ultravox onstage with them! My favorite synth player of all time, great song!
Well spotted! Made the 80s!
It indeed is...

Sure his him, he was part of the band Billy 😉
Also Dave Formula and John McGeogh from Magazine . . .
R.I.P. Steve, i was there at the the Camden Palace when this was recorded for The Tube.

Our price records how brilliant.i was in there every bloody week almost lol

un grand merci, industrial82, I love visage and the new romantic mouvement.
Love this song! I must say Mr.Strange sure does look good in those leathers! We love and miss you Steve! 💜🖤💜🖤
Omg! That was performed at the Camden Palace in the early 80s.. and I was there watching that!! lol !!
I love this track to death...even more than fade to grey. Sounds like Midge on guitar
It sounds like a track from today.
I love it!
One day I WILL do a cover of this, its so cool
I loved your music so much. RIP Steve
Loved being at his last birthday party...Legend!
And the crowd goes wild!
First seen on the Tube, lives on in You Tube.

@LiteracyLabyrinth noooooooooooooooooooo this is SO much more solid! I think this is one of the best tracks ever from that phase of electronic music. You are, of course, entitled to your opinion... ,-)

Seems to be Billy Currie behind on keyboards
The Die Krupps with Client version are pretty cool but this is a masterpiece :-)

John Mc Geoch with a Strat - Wow.
@lambchopsf The Deutsche version is called Der Amboss and is on the new Face compilation

Most of these shows, maybe not the Tube, but certainly Top of the Pops were mimed.
Although I haven't heard this version in which he sings parts in German.
Yes!

Amazing track, off an amazing album..
Thanks for the up :)
NOTHING...and I mean NOTHING...sounded like Steve back then...such a visionary and pioneer...even the mighty Gary Numan took notice.
Always present at the clubs
The damned do cry... RIP

Heavy synthsizers.
wheres midge?
Steve looked a bit like gary numan in that video
I like this one most of all forever from garry whiting
This is Cyberpunk!

Nasty history aside, this song ended up PERFECT.
So cool. You just don't get this kind of cool anymore :(
i can see rusty and billy but no midge, i guess that was dave on lead but i thought he was a bassest. i think visage were a free for all with pretty boy steve at the front. great times
No vikingecske its on the German 12 inch Der Ambose
@martynpank I don't get it, people are saying this looks gay or something? What's so gay about it? It just seems dark/futuristic to me. Is it only because the decade and the "New Romantic" associations?
Ultravox dna so clear

ooh

Currie and Dave Formula.
Is it not Currie and Rusty Egan?
Pretty sure it is Robin Simon on guitar in Midge's absence.
