Has Genshin Redeemed Itself?

  • It has been a long time since last played Genshin Impact, and I've just recently revisited it after patch 4.3
I love this game, but I can't help but feel a bittersweet feeling whenever I've been playing it for a couple of weeks. Genshin, to me, is a game that doesn't let you play it for as much as you want, and I'm genuinely fearful that this will become detrimental in itsfuture.
    Songs used:
Harmonic Melancholy - Isaak Wolf • you put your pen down ...
Le Souvenir avec le crepuscule - Genshin Impact OST
La Vaguelette (Instrumental Version) - Genshin Impact OST

As a writer, I was also stunned by Fontaine's delivery. It makes me wonder how they're going to top that in Natlan. Also you're me fr. That quest made me swallow my tears.

They could give the Pyro Archon a real amount of screen time before wanting to care about her and not making a filler Act 4.

Sumeru was very stressful to me, Inazuma's exploration could be broken up island by island, but Sumeru was huge, samey, and with the main story, the overlapping events and the daily tasks, it became too much. I started missing the first milestones and realized I didn't really care much about it, I was finally free.

Fontaine actually cooked (way better in comparison to Desert Sumeru) in terms of exploration.

Sumeru's exploration during 3.X sucked ass. Especially when you got to the desert with its myriad of underground caverns with no underground maps (which was released in 4.0, I think?). It contributed a lot to my burnout and I stopped playing for like several months waaay before 3.6 with no intention of going back. I only started playing in 4.2 because of Fontaine. Furina actually made me stick with it because I logged back in during her banner, had about 14k primogems. I told myself I'll spend all my primogems and if I got her, I'll play. If I didn't I'd log off and uninstall. I'm still playing in 2024 lol.

3:50 In 4.0 they added a "global Illumination" visual setting that changes the way that light sources cast light on the world. It's not actually raytracing but it's basically just simulating light casting on existing baked shadows.
Turn it off and you'll see what I mean. Apparently right now it only really enables full stop in cities and certain indoor areas where the draw distance isn't enormous.
7:53 I was in the process of doing two world quests during the film festival and two times the game loaded both quest triggers on the same spot. The game didn't like that. The first time the pathing for the melusine just... didn't load. The second quest, my subtitles were playing both quests simultaneously (thankfully prioritizing the spoken triggers but it was really funny to see Leroy talk inbetween paimon talking about film). I can guess as to why this didn't happen but whoever decided to skip the extra work to make the quest just, "occupy" the area and NOT use the quest priority system they started showing in 4.1 is mindboggling to me.
9:43 I honestly think that certain npcs are anchored as "quest triggers" or even just assets loaded into an area during certain quests. With the way Genshin is coded now, you probably could brick the quest progress if they were unloaded without some way of the game knowing where to save the assets. We know they are working on this in some capacity but how long will it take? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

    • @furmedok
      @furmedok 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

about the part with the quests, they have npcs and regions as triggers and all the quest sub objectives don't even need the previous part to be completed to be triggered. Why do I think that way? Because I already skipped some parts of the story just by doing something different and being jumpscared by npcs I never met before, talking to me like we know each other for at least one quest objective. Most known times where stuff like this happens:
-In the first act of liyue, if you break the ambers and free the npc inside, you will skip the start of the quest and directly get to "return with the brother to npc xyz"
-In the first quest of the Narzissenkreuz Adventure, you will skip past the first objective when you enter the Annaplausis for the first time without talking to Ann previously
-When you perform a skip inside a story domain, e.g. climb around the original area with geo mc or perform the skip in lisas domain, you will skip puzzles and dialogue and jump to the end of the domain, unless the domain is hard coded to follow a certain quest progression (to name here the domain of Tartaglias story quest).
so yeah, quests have npcs and locations saved as triggers, and unless an event HAS to happen, they can be quite buggy and you can skip some early parts of them.
So teChniCaLLy, there is something like a skip dialogue method, it's just not really intended and not useful in the most cases

I'm currently in the opposite situation. Getting Sumeru after Inazuma was what got me hooked on the game again. I loved exploring Sumeru's different variety of forests, desert and ruins. The archon quest is probably my favorite one so far. My biggest and only complain about this region would be aranara hell and maybe pari quest, but overall I was pretty invested in character's stories, especially Jeht's.
Fontaine's underwater exploration is 10/10, they nailed it, but part of me feels like it was at the cost of interesting land exploration. It technically makes sense, we are in the land of hydro, but the land has this familiar feeling of emptiness, I recall from Mondstadt.
Characters were great, but my personal star of the show is Navia, followed by Neuvillette and Wriothesley, and when it comes to npcs, they feel pretty meh?

    • @Rihorama
      @Rihorama 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

You speak from my heart! (Minus the aranara, that has still been one of the most rewarding and impactful quest endings in the whole game imo ♥). I tried hard to analyze why the exploration in Fontaine feels lacking to me and it's the shattered landscape. Water and land have clear border and nothing crosses it so it's like two separate (and due to shape quite small and restricted) regions to explore. We have water bodies that are for most part very thin and in the largest parts you can still see from one end to another (The distance from Elynas's skull to the city walls is riddiculously short even though it's clearly meant to feel like these two places have at least some distance). And after that we are left with small chunks of land you cross in a minute. There is just not enough space on land for interesting things to happen TT: Errinyes update fixed it a bit, for the first time we got a solid inland with various small biotopes inside, but it came very late. I think it should have been part of the initial update, it would fix the unfortunate region shape (basically a long noodle, three minutes from one red zone to another). I'm really curioous what they will do with Mt. Esus, I pray for another Dragonspine tier experience but for now it seems a bit too small for that TT.

I feel exactly the same. Honestly couldn't have said it better myself. Except for the part about the emptiness reminding you of Mondstadt.
(Mondstadt is still my favorite nation and I wish I had a reason to go back. Just existing out in the open is such a great feeling there. It might have to do with the music and ambient wind sounds though tbh.)

I remember how many good memories I've made on this game. I was a F2P player who made multiple accounts and enjoyed the gameplay loop of treasures/pulling for characters. Also the challenge of staying f2p kept things interesting even though it is all luck of course but even so i took joy in that aspect aswell. Genshin was a good time killer. I came into the game soon after inazuma launch because that is a pretty relevant and good time to have started playing.
Also i wish i could experience Fontaine but I'll just enjoy it through clips and like Zajef making content on goofy combat tactics. If i came back to genshin I'd want to restart like fresh f2p run again. I should like not lol.

That new player experience you talked about was basically me with FF14. I came in at probably the most perfect time (at the tail end of 6.1) when the entirety of the patch 1.0 to 6.0 main story arc was finally completed and a shit TON of QoL updates to the entire game just released. It was like an endless world of possibilities for me....until about a year later when I finished the main story. I am not the type that likes grinding through "endgame" chores so I decided to move on to a different game while I wait for 7.0 and its upcoming graphics update. IMO, I would rather leave something while carrying with me a bittersweet memory than force myself to keep staying until I completely burn out and hate it.
I am guessing that a similar fate is likely waiting for me in Genshin as well. I started around April last year and by August, FOR SOME WEIRD REASON, I decided to hold off on doing Chasm until I get Raiden Shogun. So yeah, I am an AR56 "new player" that has been pre-farming mats and artifacts for a good 4-5 months now while diligently avoiding Sumeru and Fontaine MSQ spoilers. Time will finally start moving forward again for me in a few days and I only hope that I will enjoy this new journey no matter how long (or short) it may be.

For me, I felt they did 10/10 amazing job with furina's story from the start to the end, but I will be honest the archon quest itself had so many fillers, dull moments and questionable pacing at act 2,3 and 5
they manage to write the characters in the best way possible all of them (except clorinde) but they trick us to a story lines they never really gonna explore :
the knave did almost nothing while trick us to believe she has the center role in the whole story
childe side line seems the main focus yet just forget him until the last moment they wanted to introduce his master, but they didn't know how
act 3 was all about investigating what happened to childe ? At the end we learn nothing, he didn't show up anymore, and we didn't get even to know what happened to him or talk to him or even give back his vision to him same thing happened with Mona
the whole act 3 was for the sake of making the quest longer, introduce the new area and the whole story of it is a stupid joke
the whole "ark" storyline was for the cutscene but wasn't actually needed
and the most two major events happened in act 5 was off-screen the Poisson incident and destroying the divine throne, like why didn't show us what happened ?
And killing the pace with side dialogues that seems in place but dragged so much between the major events of the story
I love Fontaine and I love the lore in this game so much like I almost read every book and note in it and believe me that's a long journey
but I felt like they focused too much on writing characters that they gave us a highlight of the main story and not the full version while being as long as if it is
Sumeru character writing was a joke like all the characters except Scara and Dehya in most parts (her story quest) but the storyline itself was really good has a good pacing except act 4, each act built to give a small journey, yet it felt connected to the main goal of the story except act 4, and the writing itself was amazing for these quests some parts felt dragged but it never as the parts in Fontaine
I feel like Genshin always must sacrifice something for something else they never do a perfect story there's always something feels off yet each one of them not bad or cheap they just a trade-off to something else that's why every journey in the nations feels different and refreshing for most players and I love all the nations but not of them are perfect by any chance it's just the question of how much you will be willing to Forgive the lack of thing in exchange for another
    good video btw ^ ^

The big problem with Furina is that if you got Act 5 spoiled, it loses the impact and is just boring.
Which basically means only Act 1 and 2 are really fun.
Also Furina spoils the same excat thing as the event just by leveling her up.

My experience was a little rookie, Genshin is a beautiful game, great characters and I prioritized exploring, solving puzzles and collecting every chest. For over a year I didn’t have the need to build a team that made any sense or study any artifacts. Problem was my world level and AR became so high it took forever to slay common enemies. So when Dendro introduced I finally understood team building. My interest in Genshin peaked with underground Chasm and forest Sumeru, mostly for the storyline about Khaenriah. I need Hoyo to introduce to us more meaningful quests per nation. Now we have around 3 versions of Archon Quest, prolly some interlude/conclusion quest and Dain/Abyss quest. It kinda feels like half of nations is content and half fillers and it's generous from me cuz said quests can last top 3h and you're left with "events, exploration (if you still have something to explore), hangouts, character quests and what have you" for whole version. There is soooo much interesting stuff in lore that can be implemented into gameplay.

This is hard to difficult to answer. The answer is yes and no. Yes if people are new or returned or if they got tired from Sumeru. No if people were too tired, or if they found other games to play or if the excitement is gone. Fontaine feels so mid. I tried but it doesn't feel the same anymore maybe because I've played RPGs like Kingdom Hearts and Xenoblade and I haven't touched Genshin since. I wish Genshin had 4 elements and regions instead of 7. By 4 elements I mean Geo, Anemo, Hydro and Pyro. 4 regions, Mondstadt, Liyue, Natlan and Snezhnaya. Playing Kingdom Hearts felt like a HUGE breath of fresh air. Natlan is coming this year and I don't know if people are still going to keep playing. I don't plan on coming back to Genshin to anytime soon. I just prefer RPGs.

For such an exotic setting, Sumeru is incredibly bland. It lacks the charm and personality that the previous nations have.
I honestly believe Sumeru has no interesting characters. Most of them are incredibly one note, with zero personality beyond the one thing that makes them "unique". They're not very colorful or charismatic.
The Archon quest while containing a lot of lore is a massive snooze fest for most of it. There's a lot of downtime and most quests come down to just walking somewhere, talking to someone and then going back. It's genuinely boring
And the world design is indeed messy. It's just a lot of vegetation everywhere with very few interesting areas to explore
The one thing Sumeru did well were the Aranara. They actually made the world feel alive and mystical when the rest of the characters didn't
Sumeru is the update that made me drop Genshin for a year. It was just a slog to play through. The new characters are really good and have amazing lore, the game started being fun again, I genuinely felt so burnt out from even a bit of farming and collecting primos that for like a month I only logged in for commissions and claiming mail rewards, maybe sometimes collecting friendship exp from teapot. Now I have fun farming from the daily resin and want to play again and again, I've even started doing bounties and commissions (reputation rewards one) just today I got the Liyue wind glider, already claimed the Mondstadt one a few days agao. I thought I would burnout fast again, but I quickly went through Sumeru, the core world quests and went through Fontaine's quest. So good! Now I'm super excited to go spend more time in Fontaine *after* I finish doing a bunch of Sumeru quests because there is SO MUCH content there to explore. Also Navia is mommy and so much fun to play. I'm addicted again. Only problem is there's still no endgame after abyss, and I don't really enjoy it that much anyway. If Genshin added some sort of real-time PVP or even PVPVE or anything like that it could become so much more fun and replayable. Abyss isn't worth a few hundred primos each clear to keep me coming back between new content updates. Since I have 2 regions to explore and catch up on, I've got that to occupy my time but once that is done, don't know what I'll do except wait for the next new region.

From my personal experience with the game, I fondly remember exploring Mondstadt and Liyue when I first started out the game, and Dragonspire might be my most favorite location on the map. Back then I had genuine interest in the plot and the game was enjoyable, at least before I went to Inazuma, which was like... 50/50 for me. Then came Sumeru which completely fails to interest me, except for maybe the ruins exploration in the desert, but that's a world quest anyways. And that little goblin in my brain doesn't help either, telling me to finish the exploration to 100% before going to Fontaine.
I was actually hoping to get back and finish "everything", at least story-wise, to get some sort of fulfillment I suppose, but yeah, like you said, the game just makes you not enjoy it at some point. Personally, I think Genshins problem is that the main way of getting "rewarded" in that game and getting something new gameplay-wise are the characters. And since my old roster was getting boring I wanted to try out a new character. So I explored the desert ruin area which took like... maybe 1-2 days and I didn't get anything good out of it, primarily full constellation Rosaria which was one of the characters I wanted to swap out to begin with. And that is with the guarantee on the event char.
I also had gotten Raiden two years ago, but since I was still in the early Mondstadt, barely unlocking the Abyss with Inazuma physically locked out, I couldn't even properly play her when I had the interest. So she still sits in my character archive without any use, since the world level is maxed out and I can't bring myself to farm these materials in Inazuma now, not to mention the character doesn't interest me now.
It's not a bad game by any means, at the core it's very beautiful and somewhat therapeutic, kinda like launching Skyrim and wandering around listening to the soundtrack, but I just wish it was different, you know? I knew what I was getting into knowing that it's a gacha and all, but still. Arknights proves to me that you absolutely can do things properly even with this genre, and this is one of the main reasons why I stick to that one for the most part.

I am gonna be real. When i started Sumeru, i was almost 6 months into the game after retiring for a a 6 months before that, and at the time all i was focused on was Character level up and Dmg increases. So starting Sumeru was too overwhelming for me, because i just wanted to complete everything fast and start grinding region materials which made me hate sumeru due to its slow exploration, and that made me retire again for now 11 months because i could not handle that frustration. I am back now, with a much fresher mindset focused on only enjoying content and Sumeru honestly has been such a blast for me. I love all the nooks and cranies that the region has to offer and its just addictive to explore. I am still focused on upgrading characters, but its a shocker of how much a simple change in mindset completely reversed my thoughts on the game compared to before.

Its very overwhelming and theres that significant fear of missing out aspect. As someone new, you dont get to participate in any event, can't build a new character banner, and no access to event rewards and event weapons unless you catch up in the newest story in 1 or two weeks which is insane. Not everyone will play 24/7. Its just horrible

Not sure how I ended up here but when it comes to Honkai: Star Rail every playable character can be found minding their own business in the game world sometimes at multiple locations and even have hidden achievements tied to their dialogue. It's one of the main things I asked for since Genshin's launch and never got so I checked out after Inazuma's main quest. The world just never came alive in my mind and only few places had harmony to them. Maybe this is starting to change with Fontaine I wouldn't know, haven't played any of it yet.

As someone who doesn't experience burn out and whos favorite region is still Sumeru, especially the desert, this was a very interesting video to watch.
Inazuma and Fontaine were the two regions I was least interested in. And while Inazuma was a disappointment, Fontaine has been quite fun. The two regions I've been most excited for since launch were Sumeru and Natlan! Sumeru still has my favorite Archon quests and soundtrack.
The event quest getting in the way of the Archon quest was such bs, especially when the main event contains spoilers. It's so annoying that this can still happen to ppl. Was watching my friend play the archon quest a similar thing happened. Was very hilarious.
As for the teapot...I've never cared about it. The only reason I use it and have it maxed out is to get the weekly rewards and help get character friendship lvls.
I also find the Spiral Abyss quite enjoyable. Especially these last several rotations which have been super easy.

Yeah, man. It's irritating not having the playable characters in the overworld. It would be comforting to see Amber in different parts of Mondstadt actively *doing her job as an Outrider* , Baizhu and Qiqi at/around Bubu Pharmacy or collecting herbs around Liyue, or Cyno surveying the desert/pyramids, etc. It could change everyday of the week or be random. These are also done on certain events where they're in different places for 6 or 7 days, like the recent one with Chevreuse's debut.
They've made silly "green HP bar" NPCs fight with you on very rare occasions. So they could certainly expand on that for the playable ones; it would bring a lot more liveliness.
It's just so eerie, like how Verr Goldet at Wangshu Inn mentions that you'll find Xiao on the upper zone, but it isn't true outside of quests/events. Certain commissions also make playable characters appear, but you'll almost never get those, and some of them don't even make it obvious (aka the one in Inazuma with those three Sumeru NPCs that inconspicuously makes Xiangling spawn outside of Qingce Village).
Also, those birthday messages that the character send often tell you to cone meet them at [x location] even though they're not really there. It's a real bummer.

The way you felt about Sumeru... I have that with Fontaine. I never had any expectations because Fontaine just by description had it very hard to amuse me. Basically another Mondstadt, only with (the million times seen) steampunk theme. Not for me. But they did amazing anyway. It's just it has some general layout problems that make me feel like the place lacks space and exploration is not that thrilling because I can't get lost there. Everything is pretty much straightforward. I just have to brace and survive for something visually more... new (Natlan). Also Chenyu Vale should be coming soon as they tease it hard and I've been thrilled to get new Liyue for ages ♥ But good to hear so many people found exactly what they needed from Genshin in Fontaine. (I would really love to see something more statistical, WHAT is it that makes some enjoy Fontaine and dislike Sumeru and vice versa. Because it's basically these two polar sides.)

I was so excited 😂❤️. This is what makes the land feel immersive to me. I still find missing chests in Liyue till this day. Heck, I even found two in 100% part of the Rainforest. @@Rihorama That’s a good point. Fontaine feels so empty and open on the surface. Kinda similar to Mondstadt. But at least with Mondstadt it’s endless stretches of land, while Fontaine is broken up because there’s water in between. I actually prefer Mondstadt because of this. I will say though the underwater areas of Fontaine are amazing. Best underwater area I’ve played in any game for sure.

    • @Rihorama
      @Rihorama 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@@Melotaku I agree! I love the underwater exploration but I need big continuous chunks of land to feel like that place has substance. And Fontaine gave us so little land in 4.0 - it was a long noodle of a map with only a few meadows :( So I also prefer Mondstadt for this reason. Let's see what Mt. Esus in Fontaine has to offer once they add it. It was instantly the place I was most curious about (Dragonspine lover here) and ofc it was not available x_x
As for the people who dislike Sumeru and love Fontaine, maybe they feel stressed when there is TOO much to explore and you must keep track of where you've been and where to go. Because Fontaine basically removed this. It's too easy to sweep, so probably stressless for many.

Well from what my gf has said about Sumeru, she’s a mobile player (iPad specifically). She has a hard time using the sigils to navigate. She feels like she’s going to fall to her death every time she uses them. And we know trying to navigate without using them is a big pain. She’s also mentioned she isn’t interested in most of the characters. The characters are the biggest reason my gf plays Genshin so it was a big turnoff from Sumeru as a whole for her. She says she doesn’t like their designs or personalities and much prefers the ones from Fontaine.
I prefer Sumeru because of how vast it is and the, sigil navigation is fun to me. Also I just enjoy the aesthetic more than Fontaine. I like medieval fantasy, it’s why I like Mondstadt the most. Sumeru is like Persian medieval fantasy so it wasn’t far off from what I like. Except the desert, which was too technologically advanced for my liking. As for the characters, Sumeru’s are my favorite overall as they feel like a real group of friends, rather than just business relationships like Fontaine’s characters have. It’s more laid-back in Sumeru.
These are at least, mine and my gf’s reasons.

Subscribed to you since your last video even though I disagree about plenty of things such as abyss, endgame and especially sumeru. Infact I think sumeru was the turning point for the quality of this game where it went from a good game with good ideas but poor execution to masterpiece level in some aspects. It's what got me back into the game after the disastrous boring era of Inazuma. Sumeru made the game great for me again and is still better than fontaine story n visually imo. Though Fontaine roster blows everything else out of the water (no pun intended, sumeru/mond 2nd best cast still). Good to have you back(?) when the game is better than ever.

  • @homurizu
    @homurizu 8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

As someone who ALSO got burnt out from Sumeru (but REALLY enjoyed the Archon quests in it) I think I can answer the question as to why it was so tiring. Exploration. Was. World Quest. Locked. Almost everything that can be explored in Sumeru is LOCKED behind a world quest mechanic. You need a certain item or key or function to access literally anything for Sumeru. "Want to unlock this song-related puzzle?" GO FIND THE ARANARA FIRST. "Want to explore the giant structures in the desert?" FOLLOW JEHT AROUND AND CLEAR EVERYTHING FIRST. It was all locked behind stupidly long world quests. And SURE, some of the WQs are interesting, BUT my counter-argument is that some people just want to explore and discover on their OWN time rather than be forced to follow an "optionally required" questline that takes hours to complete before getting the CHANCE to explore. And even then, the world quests do most of that exploration for you, so it feels more linear vs. explorative. When I came back to Genshin for Fontaine, I decided I want to try exploring that newest Sumeru zone that released before Fontaine. To my surprise, every other chest I tried to open was locked behind some mechanic that I didn't understand AND the game didn't toss a tutorial screen in front of me to explain it. I assumed it was all just locked behind world quests and felt disinterested in exploring due to the frequency of locked chests I couldn't access.
Fontaine on the other hand goes back to the older formula. Fontaine has like 80% of the map FULLY explorable without the world quests, and if you want to explore the remaining 20%, THEN you do the world quests. Almost everything that is visible to you CAN be unlocked with relative ease without the commitment of a several-hour long questline. I literally explored Fontaine to like about 20% BEFORE doing the 4.0 Archon quest and I was not at all restricted in doing so. Of course, there ARE locked puzzles here and there, but the frequency of them is so miniscule compared to what CAN be done on your own is the biggest difference. The freedom of exploration without the need to be FORCED to do something else prior is exactly what drew me in to Genshin in the first place. Sumeru did not let me do that. And trying to go back to get those Sumeru primos is actually a bit daunting for me as a returnee. I'm literally at 80-95% exploration for every single Fontaine zone but I can't for the life of me do the same for Sumeru as of right now.

Genshin has many features targeted at mobile users: to keep you active everyday, then you won't miss the big update and the chance to pull new characters. The problem about the semuru I think is that the map is too complicated, too crowded. Also, about the character in the wild, I think if the character can be hired ( only when you have build a high favorability towards he/she) to combat with you, it'll be brilliant, like a local co-op mode.

I feel the same, i've been playing this game since it came out and now i found myself trapped with that live service game design that is really bad and Hoyoverse doesn't even do it well. Fontaine made me appreciate again the things that made me stay despite the lack of content, but now i'm again logging in daily to do the daily missions for 60 mere primos and the casual crappy event that doesn't add anything and it's just filler content and free primos. I'm tired even though Natlan it's just two versions away at this point, it's a tiring game. I feel like it's an obligation just like other live service games make you feel, log in to do routine like if it was a job, you just scratch good content after a lot of walls of mediocre content and that it's the only thing that keeps you there.
I do like Genshin and the feeling of journey that makes you feel, the music it's excellent, there is a lot of charming characters and i really love how they integrated culture of a lot of countries in the game. I've enjoy the game for a long time and i'm really curious about Natlan but i must say that i almost dropped it, the only thing that keeps me doing the occasional crappy events it's the fact that i'm f2p and actually in this kind of games if even paying real money makes you feel enslaved, i think being f2p it's like staying in a dungeon prison.
I know that this comment it's more suited to be on the other video but this one made me realize the whole thing, really nice video.

And thouse that had depth, for the most part, eather copied from genshin in one way or another or simply laked something to keep me interested as in they lost the fun factor maybe 10 hours in simply because they felt repetitive.

I'm a lore enjoyed but more importantly I love good story lines and Inazuma was where I quit the game because it didn't click with me
but Sumeru what bring me back the lore is everywhere the world quests are amazing the main quest was really good
but the nation itself was the most thing that I enjoyed the most, exploring it
I know exploring without doing world quest are so limited but because the world quest story lines were so interesting at least to me, it guides you to every area you need to explore, and I love that especially that I don't do them in one go I take my time with it, so I had a lot of content to explore
and Fontaine just get rid of limiting exploration at least in most parts which good because yeah if you follow the story line of Sumeru's world quest you would find it justified why it's limit you but for a lot of players they don't want to read, don't really care about the lore (which's unfortunate) or just don't have time to do it
I can see why Sumeru wasn't for everyone they did it amazingly for people who love to explore the lore with good story lines, but it's not for casual nor for hardcore players it's for specific type of players and that it is the biggest mistake I feel even if I enjoy it personally it's not for everyone

My biggest problem with _Genshin_ is, and will ever be, that everything is determined through RNG. You cannot, and should not ever try, to min-max your gear unless you're willing to 'overstress your physicals,' as the Bronya would put it. This is why I play super-casually, with a focus on story and events. They did say they would find a way to add a replay ability, but given how much time has passed since they said so, I won't hold my breath.
Unfortunately regarding Endgame content, no there will never be any true endgame to _Genshin_ . According to the Dev Notes from way back, they said they weren't putting any because they didn't want it to be 'too stressful' for some players. So I don't count Spiral Abyss, since (A) most of it is spent waiting for the boss enemy to become vulnerable so you can attack it for a few seconds, and (2) what is it, if not stressful?
Fortunately, some of the mechanics that would easily solve _Genshin_ 's biggest issues, which are active in _Honkai Impact 3rd_ , have started to bleed over because players of _Honkai: Star Rail_ are more aware that they exist, and players of both of the more recent games are now asking more loudly why _Genshin_ doesn't have these things. Indeed, this is a good question. Also why, despite asking since launch, we still cannot pet the animals, Mihoyo? There are still many helpful things from _HI3_ that would improve _Genshin_ by leaps and bounds, so let's hope they carry over in the next few years, at least before the Teyvat Chapter ends, yes?
Which brings me to the question of 'endings.' Mihoyo likes to keep its games going for as long as they are still profitable and/or fun, and for my evidence, we have only to look at _Guns Girls Z_ and _Honkai Impact 3rd_ . Both are launching their next phases in their story sometime next month, probably before the end of February. Mihoyo shows no sign of closing _GGZ_ even though the main original story was finished many years ago, they just add on more, and keep the game alive for its players. Similarly, _HI3_ is a big passion project, so they'll keep that going for at least six more years, according to Dawei himself. From Mondstadt to Khaner'iah, and maybe Celestia and the Abyss, the Travails Trailer has called it 'The Teyvat Chapter,' and since the Traveler Siblings can travel between worlds like the Astral Express, we can believe that they will go to other worlds besides Teyvat, extending the potential story of _Genshin_ , perhaps infinitely. It goes with the whole cosmology of the Honkaiverse, the Imaginary Tree and the Sea of Quanta, that there are other worlds and versions of bubble worlds that the Siblings could visit to extend their adventures further (they are thousands of years old). This means _Genshin_ can continue for as long as Mihoyo wants it to, just like their other games. No need to worry about it ending with Teyvat.
As long as _Genshin_ continues, there are many possibilities for its continung stories. Also, as long as it continues, there are possibilities for competing games to pop up. Competition is one of the only ways the Genshin Team will feel like improving the game to provide players with a better experience so they won't want to jump ship, so I really want there to be competition, preferably from outside of Mihoyo itself. I want their games to be as good as possible, after all.
But for now, if you want an endgame experience, you have to go to _HSR_ and _HI3_ , not _Genshin_ . But for you, these games may not tickle your fancy, since they don't have true open worlds. Each of Mihoyo's games is different.

The solution to staying longer in Genshin is to get invested with the in-game TCG. …I really wish Mihoyo thought of a better solution, lol.
Please, please, please fill out the version 4.3 survey. I got badly spoiled by the event too and Mihoyo needs to know that this event should have came with the Quick-Start feature. Please let them know that in the survey.

The only thing making genshin boring is that there is no real endgame content. Like there is no real way to use your built characters, once you do all quests the game isnt a game no more

Fontaine is my favorite region in genshin ever. I’ve been a fan of genshin since around 1.2 but never had the chance to play because I didn’t have a device compatible with the game until till summer 2022 (I forget the version it was around Fischls summer event though). Though I had loved genshin, I never played it a ton, most of the hype for the game died down and a lot of my friends quit. I was there for Sumeru but never made it past the chasm, never had the drive to. Even from leaks I had loved Fontaine and specifically Furina. I liked Furina a ton because of not just her design but her personality, lots of my friends said she reminded them of me after 4.0 released. When Fontaine came out I did the chasm quests and the entirety of Sumeru archon quest just to get to Fontaine during 4.0 and start the archon quest. I’ve never did something like this for a single game I’ve played. Fontaine’s archon quest immediately caught my interest, and I waited for each part excited. Nothing could have prepared me for fontaines full story! I also don’t cry much over media, but I cried my eyes out because of this story as dumb as it may sound. It was a gorgeous story that genuinely had a major effect on me that barely any media has had, same with Furina’s story quest. Fontaines story telling has seriously changed genshin, I hope the future of genshin keeps with this improvement. I really like Fontaine and I’m glad you could get back into the game and enjoyed it! Furina is still my all time fav after the archon quest and story though! I think they added to her character a ton, and I’m so grateful I won both 50/50 on her banner and weapon banner, honestly the days leading up to her banner release/4.2 release felt similar to the feeling you get on the days before Christmas, which was really odd since I haven’t gotten that feeling in years.
Basically TLDR on my rambling, Fontaine has improved genshin a ton and I love Fontaine and Furina a lot! lol

Nah, youre not alone with sumeru. It;s definitely the most boring map and easily overwhelming. It didnt need to be THAT big lol but I guess that was the effect they wanted with the desert. A lot of quest gated stuff too and you have to play for HOURs just to open some areas than just chill exploring. im at endgame and 1st week player and genshin became a routine so it never bothered me and always 100 the map. But with Sumeru Iwas just soooo burned out and didnt play the game for like a months and just played again for Klee's summer adventure.

I loved Sumeru. It's easily my favourite region. Fontaine is just pointy Mondstadt. But worse somehow. It just seems so boring and empty.

Oh yeah and I hate that they threw that MAJOR STORY SPOILER into the event. And right at the start too. You couldn't avoid it even if you wanted to.

Sumeru felt so more lively than any other region including Fontaine. Liyue is more lively than Fontaine.

Sumeru to fontaine is a complete 180 and in my opinion saved the game from falling into a mediocre cash grab. While Sumeru was largely a chore to explore (especially before 4.0 due to the lack of an underground map), fontaine genuinely evokes the same feeling I had when I first explored the mountains of Liyue. It's the single best thing to happen to the game since Inazuma, and for that you picked a great time to come back. Not to mention all of the QOL updates since the launch of Fontaine.
Also if you're above AR55 and on the NA server feel free to join my world for Navia mats. I'll drop my ID if you want

For me, what always keeps me going in Genshin is the story. And no, I'm not talking about the Archon quests and characters quests, although those are nice too, I'm talking about the world quests that explore and expand on Teyvat as a whole. Maybe it's because I'm a sucker for fantasy worlds lore, but I absolutely love finding out new things as I play, about the history of the world, it's structure, important characters etc. Plus, alongside the main quests, these little world detours come out every update, so there is more than enough content for me to go through at my own pace, hence my excitement for the game! A lot of people focus on the archons or the twins, but tbh there is much more to the story that's interesting beyond that. I'm currently doing Narzissenkreuz quests in Fontaine, and I love them

Yeah, Sumeru was suffocating. Fontaine felt like a sip of fresh water (pun intended). For me Sumeru had too much of backtracking and sometimes not too intuitive puzzles. Some people enjoyed it, i'm in a category that did not. The story was good in Sumeru, it's actually my favorite so far. Yes, i did the Fontaine Archon Quest, but i wasn't impressed by it. The first part was amazing, it gave me some hope. Then the second part came with the prison, and oh my god, the one who designed that Meropide Tower is definitely the one who designed the Deshret Tomb. Holy sh** i hate that place. Too. Much. Backtracking. Jesus.
The third part of Fontaine quest was ok i guess, but i didn't cry. If anything, that part made me really uncomfortable. The whole plan was stupid and "foolproof like a swiss watch" (or how people like to say in my country). I mean i'm glad it worked, but there were too many variables, so the result and the process only made me annoyed. It's still better than Inazuma Story Quest, so it's fine i guess. Just not my cup of tea.
The exploration in Fontaine on the other hand is like old school genshin how it was back in the days. Simple and fun. Enjoyed it a lot. You don't need any special macguffin to explore to your heart content, so it's neat.
I want to take a break from the game too, but i'm always afraid that i'll miss smth, so i guess i'm too deep in this game after 3 years. Though i don't login every day nowadays like i did for the first 2 years, it's a progress i guess.

I feel the EXACT same way. I also returned to 4.3 after a 7-8 month break and I'm genuinely having fun again. I've been playing since 1.2, and it feels SO NICE to finally be playing just to *play*, instead of treating Genshin like an endless grind for primos.

It`s not just genshin, it happens to a lot of games, some experiance comes once in the life time. I still remembered the first time I entered enkanomiya and up until now I wish a chance to erase my memory of exploring it and do it over again.

Having the character in the world would make the game much more 'real' to me, also they send you birthday letters just to invite you to see them, but they are nowhere to be found!

I used to be afraid of the abyss and just get 33 star once and done. But after my characters are strong to get 36 star, I just view the abyss as a testing ground for some weird team I cook up.
