The US Navy wants to build thousands of drones to counter China. Nobody wants to build them.

  • The US Navy is seeking contractors to build thousands of low-cost unmanned drones to counter China's dominance in these technologies. But the military-industrial complex is committed to continue the focus on large, high-cost ships and submarines.
Despite the Navy's public insistence that unmanned drones and submersibles are a priority, it has made few capital commitments, especially long-term, to attract interest from shipbuilders. What's more, legacy shipbuilders for the Navy strongly prefer to make weapons systems according to the models that exist now, given profit margins and lack of capacity.

The reason China is not building hundreds of warships is because they don’t want their ship building relying solely on military spending like US did. Basically US ship building and steel industries went out of business when there were no more government military spending. China wants to build ships for economic growth and dual use. The goal is to build enough warships to defend but avoid over expanding. This way they can build newer warships constantly to replace older warships with newer and better warships.

Amid a public relations fan-fair, China introduced a new aircraft carrier. I suspect that it was just for show to set the US off on a ship building spree. This is old established technology and the carrier and the fighter jets that it carries are obsolete. I suspect that China is investing their energies in AI piloted drones that be launched in a synchronized swarm in addition to public relations traps for the US to step into.
The most expensive and irreplaceable element in a jet fighter is the human pilot.
In the end, when the US is gone, Taiwan will rejoin China because China will make it an attractive proposition.

China, Russia, Iran and NK are a defacto military alliance, 3 of the 4 have nuclear weapons and all have great military industrial capacity. The reason being is their government control, at an instant they can produce military equipment and ammunition that is cheaper and competent on the battlefield if war escalates. The US military can no longer rely on accuracy and better performing equipment if they are being destroyed by the sheer volume of drones and artillery, ships and missiles. The US MIC cannot compete, they just don't have enough capacity.

It's difficult to imagine the number of small, fast and lethal under sea drones China is capable of utilizing very quickly in the Taiwan Strait or anywhere else in their own back yard. Remember, one does not have to sink an enemy combatant's ship or submarine, only put it out of action. An aircraft carrier is useless unless it can launch and recover aircraft. It's very hard to fight when you're busy pumping and patching a badly listing ship. Drones of all types by the thousands and missiles of all sorts are the mainstay of today's warfare.
