China now has superiority in satellite navigation. This means decades of commercial dominance.

  • China's SatNav system is now demonstrably superior to the GPS system of the US, according to industry experts and an investigative report to Congress. The Chinese system is more powerful, more accurate, and covers a much greater area, especially in the Global South and in the developing world.
    This comes at a time when the developing world will see giant new consumer markets, and almost all electronic devices, equipment, and vehicles will have connectivity and mapping functions.

    It is noteworthy to point out that in 1993 the US disabled the GPS used by the Chinese container ship "Yinhe" ('Milky Way) and accused it was carrying chemical weapon materials to Iran. The United States Navy forced the surrounding Middle Eastern countries to refuse docking rights to the Yinhe, leaving it in the international waters of the Indian Ocean for twenty-four days. The GPS of the ship was jammed such that the ship could not navigate. Eventually inspections of the ship's cargo by a joint Saudi-United States team concluded that the cargo ship did not contain any chemical weapons precursors. The U.S. government stated that there would be no apology, saying "the United States had acted in good faith on intelligence from multiple sources."
    Thus China decided that it has to have its own satellite navigation system and implemented it in three stages.
    1. 2000-2003: experimental BeiDou navigation system consisting of three satellites
    2. By 2012: regional BeiDou navigation system covering China and neighboring regions
    3. By 2020: global BeiDou navigation system
    The difference of the two systems are
    No. of satellites China(56) US (31)
    Search & Rescue function China(yes) US(no)
    Monitoring functions/facilities China(10) US(1)
    Global positioning accuracy China(cm) US(metre)
    What China has found out, as typically in many cases, the western technology and products are often big in name, low in substance, reveal shortcomings when there is a competition/alternative and can be surpassed easily.
    The west has not gone seriously into 5G which is now nearly fully implemented in China. The Beidou and 5G are complimentary to each other. The two are fostering lot of new technological development in industrial and agricultural applications.

    The funny thing when Americans write about the "dangers" of Chinese technology is that they're making a confession about their real motivations. I think China decided to develop BeiDou when the US cut off GPS access to China in the 90s when one of its rockets suddenly lost signal and they didn't know where the rocket went. That was the day China was determined to develop BeiDou so the US cannot intimate it any longer. Similarly, the ISS was off limit to the Chinese, so they went out and built their own station. Every time the US cuts China off something, they become self-sufficient in that area. And now the US is cutting off advance chips to China. They will eventually become self-sufficient in that area as well. When this happen, it will hurt US's and its allies' companies the most. They will flood the markets with advance chips, like solar panels and EVs, that is when most american companies will go bankrupt.
    I do not believe the US is capable of learning from their past mistakes.
    edit: Like someone in the comments had also stated, the "Yinhe", the ship that lost at sea because the US scrambled its GPS signal was also the motivation behind China's determination to create an alternative to the GPS.

    • @rap3208
      @rap3208 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +30

      Now, it's microchips. The US is cutting off chips (or trying its best to) and it's gonna a few years then CHina will be self sufficient in chips. Where are they gonna sell their chips now when China is 80% of the market of all produced chips (becuase it manufactures everything for the world. Profits of Korean, Taiwan and japans's chipmakers have plummeted because they joined US sanction on CHina.

    • @FabioCapela
      @FabioCapela 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

      It's not just that China will sell those chips cheap; using homegrown, sanctions-proof tech means China can just ignore sanctions and sell those chips to whoever they want. If the US allowed China to receive cutting-edge chipmaking equipment that incorporates US tech, the US could then use that to prevent those chips from being sold to Cuba, Iran, North Korea, Russia, or any other country the US sanctions; if China becomes self-sufficient then the US loses any leverage it could have had to control which countries are allowed to purchase those chips.

    US simply assumed nobody can catch up in their control of technology. They think they can either suppress any competitor from entering the market or control them through the financial market since they need money to expand. Not many countries have enough talents and also the money to spend on research. And then you need to find hard working labors since US will say people use slave labors or cheap labors despite US is doing the same. And you also need a government that is patient, consistent, good planning and foresight. A lot of Asian countries fit these requirements. But they are usually rely on US for the market and under its financial control. This is why US likes their "fake" democracy so much to do regime change. Every time , they can change the leader the progress of a country will delay another 10 years.

    Two more things.
    First, Chinese-made positioning receivers tend to not just receive BeiDou signals, but also use the signals of the competing positioning systems to improve its precision and coverage; they thus can also use GPS, Magellan, and GLONASS satellites. This makes them inherently better than any receiver that doesn't make use of all four positioning system constellations.
    Second, China having its own positioning system makes Chinese users, including military users, immune to GPS and Magellan service denial. GPS intentionally incorporates features to degrade the accuracy or even prevent its use, which were supposed to provide a big advantage to the US military which could then just mess at will with the positioning systems used by enemy troops; China having its own comparable system means the US completely lost this capability against China, as well as any country China allows to use their positioning system for military purposes.

The liberal government soon put pressure on the school to bus in kids from low performing areas. Within a matter of 3 years, the school's performance plummeted and it later became gang infested. That was a microcosm of the American school system and reflective of society at large. I wouldn't send a child to the best ranked public school today. Great point. I use GPS in the Uk.
    It is accurate to 5m (unless you can access its military accuracy) which means driving along the Embankment my old sat nav sometimes puts me driving in the river Thames!
    The real worry is at a multi junction it can think your on the correct lane to pull off the correct exit when you are not. Fortunately, lanes are generally well posted but if you are unlucky enough to be watching other traffic and manoeuvring - you might miss the sign and be left reliant on just gps then with 5m accuracy - it can be a bit of lottery.
    It would be nice if they would put up a few more satellites in other areas. I used sat nav in Singapore and it got things badly wrong because it only could lock on to 2 satellites instead of the usual number. No problems with bds and the satnav on my Huawei phone though. I now rely on my phone and not a dedicated sat nav.

    As we speak, if a Thai consumer wants to buy an EV, s/he doesn't even have an American EV to choose from - I don't consider Tesla American as I'm not even convinced that Elon considers Tesla American when in fact he was catapulted into the stratosphere of wealth on the back of Tesla profitability in China after his first gigafactory was built in Shanghai. When we talk American cars, we think the American legacy brands like GM, Ford and Chrysler (the third now no longer exists as American), all of which are non-entities in the EV world. So the Thai consumer's decision is already made for him - Chinese or Tesla...or Korean. Same scenario throughout Asia.
