We took our LR RWD Model 3 from SoCal to Denver last Christmas. 2,000 mile round trip, $96 of supercharging (we used destination chargers for the overnights) and 500-600 miles per day. The model 3 comes with one size battery from the factory. This is why they don't mention the size battery in the model name any more. So if she wanted the long range all she has to do is pay for it and Tesla would unlock the extended range from the computer. Now the performance model that has "ludicrous" mode does have a bigger electric motor.

andrew nestoras I was going to say the same thing about all the cool places you mutha was not seen! Reminds me of the movie Cars. Once they built the new freeway, no one stopped along their route which was Route 66 😉. I would think that all the technology that there would be longer distance batteries or charge. Come on Tesla, which by the way is shameful how they use his name, but I digress. I have read that Tesla cars should be able to go 1,000 miles minimum. So what gives, Elon?

It works great when you are in a developed place like California, but imagine being in a remote isolated area of the world and you would probably struggle to find superchargers. So with a normal charger it would take a longer time.

My wife and I travel 400+ miles a minimum of 10x a year. If driving 8hrs in an ICE is going to be 10-12 hrs that kind of sucks. I like the idea of EVs I just want one that can do 400+ miles on a charge, then I will switch over. So for some people to be concerned about road trips they are justified, but like you said honestly consider how often you will go on long trips, then choose the car that suits your needs.

    • @kenmcclow8963
      @kenmcclow8963 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

My car goes 240 miles on a full charge which is 3 hours @ 80mph, or 4 hours@ 60mph. I usually have to pee by then and/or I get hungry or thirsty. Stopping for 20-30 minutes for bathroom and refreshments while you charge isn't going to ruin your trip if it's 400ish miles. More than that I would have to stop a second time to pee again, and charge.
Tesla is the only one getting close to a 400 mile range and that's only on the most expensive car, but batteries are getting better. I suspect a lot of car companies are going to make the batteries smaller which makes the cars lighter and more efficient rather than maximize range.

I think there's a little hyperbole in that. For many people, they have one or two cars, and those vehicles need to fit all the needs of their family. If you do tend to do toad trips (we've gone cross country three times in the last six years), your daily driver either needs to be able to ha sleep that demand, or you need to resolve yourself to renting.
I think the range worries are certainly a little overblown. But I do think many of them are valid. And it's probably why videos like this see so many hits. People want to feel assured that they can do that once every couple years cross country trip, if they want to.
When you're spending upwards of $40k on a vehicle, you probably aren't looking to make many compromises.

I've had a Model 3 since October and Ive never regretted the purchase. I also own a 2019 Raptor, a 2009 Nissan GT-R and the Tesla M3 is my favorite! I've done road trips from Utah to Washington in the Model 3 and I actually like road tripping in a Tesla. It forces you to stop and enjoy your surroundings, get out and explore parts of the country you otherwise would have just blown through. I've done road trips from Utah to Las Vegas in the Model S and trips from Utah to LA in a Model X and same thing, I like it! Sure, quicker charging time in the future will be nice but being forced to get out of my car and stretch my legs makes the trip feel shorter.

Excuse if I'm incorrect, but I think Tesla it's a car made for "conventional routes" or more turistic, not for boring interstate highways. It's kind a revival of the old good days of cross country trips (like historic Route 66 for example), make stops every 150 miles, visit some nice towns, enjoy the view, local food, etc.

Charging time is only getting better as well. With V2 superchargers rolling out right now. It will only speed up your stop times.

Pro-tip. If you are afraid of your range getting to the next supercharger, just drive like 5 miles an hour slower or find a semi to drag behind. But the Tesla does a very good job of estimating what your battery will be when you get to your destination. It will account for your driving habits and elevations you will be traversing. When you can't see the mirrors of the truck, the truck can't see you. Catching my drift? Ariana Grande said it best, "Thank you, next."

So if you are looking at 4B, you will get a faster charger if 4A is unoccupied. If you are sharing with another car that was there before you, then you get the left over from what they are not using. As the other car gets more full it will slow down it's charge and you will get a faster charge. If you get plugged in first, the other car gets your leftover charge.
This is mostly on the old 120kw chargers. The new 250kw chargers are not shared, they are individual.
My car is almost five years old, so my maximum charge speed is 103kw and it tapers down fairly quickly. Newer Model S and X can go faster and Model 3 and Model Y go a lot faster, so they can charge almost twice as fast as I can.

Also V3 superchargers will start being way more prevalent in the future where time to charge completely is 20-25 minutes. So even then if you aren't fully charging at V3 stations then your stops might be around 10-15 minutes.

You can’t paint the picture and make it seem like it’s gone me many long stops. Besides, she has the standard range. There’s always the bigger battery option. Yes it’s more expensive but hey, if you’re looking into an electric car you should know the implications on your wallet. Lastly, people act like they go on 200 road trips every month. Like seriously...road trips??? That’s just the internets way of nitpicking electric cars. The average person just commutes within a city for most of the year. How often do you go on road trips?

    • @codmott286

@@deekay2899 1000 miles is 1000 miles friend. Whether you want to make 10 short stops or 5 long one's it's all the same time spent in the end. The point is who wants to stop at all? EV cars require many more stops, to the point it's a huge pain in the ass.
If people only commute in their city then who the hell needs a 250 mile range battery in the first place? You're paying for a 250 mile battery so you can drive 20 miles per day? Yikes.
