Bernard didn't slap that much. But boy did he know how to groove. I just love this solo. Loads of string bends and just one or two notes that hit it down mean - a great, great player. What a bass sound - doesn't try to copy Bernard but does his own thing in the same spirit - truly awesome.
Love Jerry Barnes... As some of you may know (or may not!) he and his sister Katreese were the founding members of Funk band JUICY who had some great hits on their own (Sugar Free was one of them). Their 1st LP was produced by Deodato...
Bernard Edwards, none can touch Bernard Edwards Simple as that, no one can touch Nile Rodgers too, his unique style wont be covered. Both inventend modern music.
Nile Rodgers is a freakin genius producer arranger everything he touches turns to gold(or multi platinum) whether it's Duran's first #1s or madonna's #1s or Bowie's #1 or Diana Ross's or Sheena Easton's.
Why has no one mentioned LARRY GRAHAM !!! but forget the three o dem, J B, M M & L G, there were thousands and thousands of iconic soul and Funk records made the 60/70 & 80s, including all those early 70s 45s, all with the the base as the main part and most soul inspiring part of the song, so what I want to know is, where did so many people get all those groovy baselines from ? How did they think them up in their heads. Amazing .
Yes I agree this cat is more Marcus Miller than The Great Bernard Edwards............Bottom line Alfa, Luci, Tony and Bernard there is no replacing them Nile period. Chic is done as a live act but the music will live on forever.
Why are people downing Jerry Barnes. True, he is no Bernard, but man, you have to admit that he definately holds his own. I play bass, and to me, Jerry has the right funk for this type of music. He is the perfect replacement for the "Great Bernard Edwards". Just listen to how Jerry is thumpin and pickin that bass. You can almost hear that guitar beggin for mercy, and at the same time lovin how it is being played. Jerry is a very good fit for CHIC. My opinion, like it or not.
To be remembered in my mind, I've dissed him a lot of times because he's not Bernard, but I think he would understand that himself. So he's a fantastic bass player in his own right? And you chose the right man and I hope you can tell him that on behalf of me, so who was a doubter?
As good as Jerry Barnes is, with all due respect, Bernard Edwards was the other great creator behind Chic. All the bass lines that made Chic came from Bernard.
I like Jerry Barnes bass playing a lot, but sometimes, he steps all over the songs and ruins the feel of Chic. Not here obviously, since this is a little jam session within a song.
I don't like soloing even though you're both great at it Here's a question for you then. Nile so Ringo did two drum solos in the Life of The Beatles. Do you know what they were? To be totally honest, you two whacking away on your guitar showing off totally turns me off. But I know you play together and I forgive that. And yeah, obviously you're absolutely fucking great musicians but a lot of the time it's not about showing that as Bernard proved
Bernard didn't slap that much. But boy did he know how to groove. I just love this solo. Loads of string bends and just one or two notes that hit it down mean - a great, great player. What a bass sound - doesn't try to copy Bernard but does his own thing in the same spirit - truly awesome.
Barry johnson better that him
FROM ONE BASS PLAYER TO ANOTHER,JERRY BARNES KEEP DOING WHAT YOU DOIN,SOUNDS GREAT!!!
This GENIUS wrote literally 1000’s of great songs THANKS NILE !❤
Bernard was pure genius, but Jerry is no slouch. The guy is fantastic!!!
Jerry is a virtuoso. Bernard wrote the successful bass riffs that we are still humming today...
I can listen to this all day. A huge fan of the legendary Nile Rodgers. I hope to hear them play live some day.
The best Bass Session I've ever heard....
Nice video...bass & lead perform
Jerry is a true musician as well and a very nice guy.
10 years since I first heard this and it's still the funkiest, grooviest thing to ever enter my brain.
just stumbled across this. what a performance, awesome
Well, if he is good enough for Nile Rodgers... he is good enough!
Love Jerry Barnes... As some of you may know (or may not!) he and his sister Katreese were the founding members of Funk band JUICY who had some great hits on their own (Sugar Free was one of them). Their 1st LP was produced by Deodato...
my cousins!
Bernard Edwards, none can touch Bernard Edwards
Simple as that, no one can touch Nile Rodgers too, his unique style wont be covered.
Both inventend modern music.
yep about right my friend
Jerry Barnes has soul.
R.i.P. Bernard Edwards.
My jaw litterally buried itself in the floor.
TheSkipjack95 listen to Chic cheer on experience chic live from Amsterdam.
He has more in common with Marcus than with Bernard.
Much more. Bernard was a slick player.
He is such a nice person too, I got the chance to meet him in Belgium, Genk .
Nile Rodgers is a freakin genius producer arranger everything he touches turns to gold(or multi platinum) whether it's Duran's first #1s or madonna's #1s or Bowie's #1 or Diana Ross's or Sheena Easton's.
This is severely heavy! Jerry Barnes with Omar Hakim on the drums, grooves do not get much better.
The only reason 4people disliked this is because they've mis-hit 'dislike' from the ridiculous funky beats that make you tremble!
Saw them live and on acid. What a Fucking funky disco trip in Manchester, UK!!!
MONSTRUEUX !!
Jerry Barnes is a name
God was a black funk bass player.
No he wasn't, he got too many things wrong.
@@gimmeagig lmao
Show,nota 10!
great tone and cool licks!
R.I.P Bernard Edwards. At least your successor Jerry Barns loved you a put everything into being as good as you.
Jerry's bass has the tone I love , Benard is missed
Nice Shur bass, i love it
Super músicos.
Very very good
The funk masters.

Awesome
Brilliant
Man look at theses brother smacking down on them G-tars..Just cannot get ENOUGH OF THIS FUNK right here...And I Try...🎸🎸
Great !!!!
Omar Hakim holding the groove for them both.
Yes I agree this cat is more Marcus Miller than The Great Bernard Edwards............Bottom line Alfa, Luci, Tony and Bernard there is no replacing them Nile period. Chic is done as a live act but the music will live on forever.
❤️❤️❤️❤️
Nard is smiling down from above!
…, and he plays with cable, the full sound through the wire. What a god,....
welllll,my Groooooove is definitely Funnkedddddddd😎
Thanks!
I prefer Bernard's finger style groove over this slap by far!!
Yeah. But nobody can play that way.
Same
dont fucking dwell on what you cant get, appreciate whaat you have, this guy is great too!
Same
Same here
on bass,,yup..that's the funk
Respect Jerry! Bernard was Bernard and that's that. But Jerry is Jerry! Big up man
Someone light a match!! the funk is too strong!!!
Yes, sounds more like Marcus or Stanley than Bernard.
Let me share.
Eastern NC! Jerry is one bad micky ficky.
This is Black Motown RUSH, baby!!!
Still here in 2024?✋

Pensa by the looks of it.
Nice play
To be remembered in my mind, I've dissed him a lot of times because he's not Bernard, but I think he would understand that himself. So he's a fantastic bass player in his own right? And you chose the right man and I hope you can tell him that on behalf of me, so who was a doubter?
holy f*

🎣
I just want to say a group listen to shake your guys inspire me to be a better musician Mr. Edward's I lyses bass player
Without either one of them it isn’t chic. As much as I love this and jerry. You need both Bernard and nile for it to be chic
BERNARD EDWARDS IS THE BEST
👍🏽
I almost fell off my chair! 2:56
Holy shit this video was like crack for the ears
How do you get that bass tone
Oh cool dosent he have some custom suhr jazz basses as well
Rory Sanger very true sir
It's in those damn fingers man
My bass teacher is from North Carolina and when he showed me how to slap the first thing he said was "I bet you didnt know I had so much black in me"
you´re right vstrings
I just shit my pants...
nahh,,magic come from Bass
Bass tab pls
Did Nile cuss @1:23??🤣
Marcus Miller , come out of this body!!!
2:30 the shit is happening
Jerry is awesome, but the closet person to play like Bernard is Raphael Saddiq! Raphael even said his style is influenced by Bernard.
You cannot compare the funk of Bernard Edwards with some technical slap pop playing. OK Slap is faster but it doesn't have more feel!
Bernard was funkier just playing 2 single notes and of course without slapping.
Anyone know what make of bass guitar he plays?
@@Henry60217 Just wrong. He plays Atelier Z basses, take a look at the headstock.
in this video he is playing a custom pensa jazz bass
This is so dirty, damn
I'm pretty sure if he couldn't groove, he wouldn't be in Chic now would he?
@davie504
As good as Jerry Barnes is, with all due respect, Bernard Edwards was the other great creator behind Chic. All the bass lines that made Chic came from Bernard.
@Davie504
His Bass is a Sadowsky made in NYC.
I like Jerry Barnes bass playing a lot, but sometimes, he steps all over the songs and ruins the feel of Chic. Not here obviously, since this is a little jam session within a song.
A load of mush. Not Bernard Edwards.
My man damaged that bass!!
I prefer barry johnson
I agree
I don't like soloing even though you're both great at it
Here's a question for you then. Nile so Ringo did two drum solos in the Life of The Beatles. Do you know what they were?

Sorry, Jerry is a decent bassist in his own right but does not come anywhere close to Bernard. And his slappin is rather uninteresting, oh well...
You are right Paolo. Bernard didn't need to slap to be funky.
Imho Mr.Barnes plays & slaps too much. This is not Bernard's vibe.
Worst bass solo ever
shiiiit
"bass is so important in our groove"..pity jerry dosent groove
