Well aragorn is 89 in the series, and lives up to two hundred and something. They were together since he was about 50, so they stayed together to his death, after 150/160 years. In the end she died a year after him, renouncing her mortality.

You mean Eowen? First, she’s not technically a princess, she’s just the heir to the throne of Rohan. And when the heck did she do that? She ended up with Feramir son of Denethor son of Ecthelion so I’m confused as to where that happened.

"why wont Gandalf cast the spells??" I too asked myself this question. Then I took a class on Tolkien and learned the way. Gandalf, and the other wizards, are basically demi-gods. each stands for something. Gandalf's is Wisdom; he guides humanity to their own choices and does not rule over them or bend nature to his whim with his powers (unlike Saruman). And another fun fact. The Balrog used to be one of them! But it got too greedy and was consumed by the power it craved and turned into the Balrog we all hate today.

Balrog were not exactly greedy, they were Mai corrupted by Melkor (Morgoth) the strongest of the Valar who rebelled against the rest of the gods and Iluvatar, he also corrupted Mairon (Sauron), the strongest Maia and made him his first general.

OMG thank you for answering this question! For so long I've wondered about the wizards magic and it's usage! I kinda understood they don't bend nature when in the prequel Gandalf told Bilbo that it'll continue to rain and that it's nothing he could do about that, but didn't fully understood the concept! I also haven't read the books so kimds my fault and the fact about the Balrog!!!

The powers of the One Ring are as follows. When a normal person puts it on (not an angelic being such as Gandalf or an Elf like Elrond or Galadriel for example as they can resist the following effect) it sends you to the “other side/shadow realm” so you turn invisible, however Sauron and the Nazgûl know where you are. The Ring also boosts any power and skill you have to S+ Tier levels. Some think that maybe because Hobbits are good at sneaking, this is what turns them invisible but that is just speculation. If Aragorn were to have the One Ring, his sword skills would be unmatched. If Gandalf or Galadriel had it then their magical power would be Godlike (although they would also slowly be corrupted by its power)
The Three Elven Rings still boost the power of Galadriel, Elrond and Gandalf with the powers of preservation, healing and willpower respectively, along with an overall power boost. The Rings of Galadriel and Elrond also help hide/shield/protect their locations from Sauron’s forces and Gandalf’s ring has an aura of willpower and drive to help push those around him to victory.
The Dwarven Rings only increased the Dwarves’ greed for gold and jewels etc which didn’t help Sauron in his initial plan which was to control the minds of all those who wore the Rings. That’s why he gave the rings out to the leaders of each race.
The Nine Rings that were given to the race of Men (Humans) were the only ones that worked for Sauron as humans are most easily corrupted. The Dwarves were too stubborn to be bent to his will and the Elves (who’s Rings were not touched by Sauron) took their Rings off as soon as they learned of his deception and only put them back on after Sauron was defeated the first time (as seen at the start of the first film).
And those are the powers of the Rings, thank you for listening to my TED Talk. 😊

@@ImALefty08 Thats one of the fan theories. However the movies disagree with this as Isildur also goes invisible but the book is much older, hence the fan theory. It could just be that every single person the reader/viewer sees use the ring is also in DIRE NEED of avoiding being caught at the time of wearing it, so it's possible that it's known ability to amplify the wearers innate power manifests their will to be hidden. It's not explained in detail but that's what makes it as good as it is.

-Aragorn isn't aging because he's related to the Dúnedain who live three times longer than normal men
-In the books there's not a lot said about Legolas or his backstory. I think the main reason he's in there is because he and Gimmly represent two groups, who originally didn't like each other but were able to overcome their differences and become friends.

The ring being a hindrance is the point. People want it because it’s a legendary object and they believe it will give them power. It’s part of the lie. Also, the ring has a will of it’s own and can influence people psychically. The greater your desire for power is the easier it is for the ring to influence you. That’s why hobbits make ideal ring bearers as they generally don’t care much for power.

Some interesting lore concerning Galadriel's hair. LONG before the events of the books, the most badass elf to ever live asked Galadriel for a hair. She never gave it to him because he only wanted it out of vanity. He asked her three times. She still said no. But Gimli, a dwarf of no great significance, asks her for a hair. She gave him three. Gimli fell in love with Galadriel. In the books he cries when leaving Lothlorien because he knows he's never going to see her again. Which is also why he asked for a hair.

I'm just going to clear up some questions for those who are interested:
    1. The wizards aren't what you think they are. They're not really spell-using people, they're almost a type of angel and were made by the Gods to look after the world they created. Also, Gandalf didn't turn the moth into an eagle. The eagles are creatures created by a god just like any living creature in Middle-Earth, but he called upon them for help.
    2. What the rings do is they give the carrier the power to protect what they desire most. The dwarves desire treasure so they kept finding more and more gold until dragons came and ate them and their rings, basically. The elves love nature and the world around them, so their rings preserve their cities and basically make them livable for the elves. Kind of weirdly explained probably but basically as the world was created there was a certain amount of magic in it and it's declining over time. Elves feed off that so when at the end the rings lose their power after the one ring is destroyed and don't preserve that anymore, all the elves leave the world to go to Valinor (Heaven kinda). Men care about their lives the most, so the rings stretched it so thin until they became wraiths basically. The one ring is different since it wasn't forged with the others. It was made from malintent and basically only exists to oppress others and it only listens to Sauron. That's why it's continuously trying to be worn or escape or be found, so it can get back to Sauron.
    3. Aragorn is a special human-ish. Basically, his bloodline has some elf blood so he's blessed with a longer life, but he's still mortal. The Evenstar (the necklace he got from his elf girlfriend) does protect him but doesn't necessarily grant him more life.
    4. It was Tolkien's vision for the hobbits to be simple creatures. They're not accustomed to life outside of their safe shire, so going out and doing this mission was their big storyline and their main character points. You could give Frodo powers with the ring but he wouldn't really use it since that's what hobbits are like. That's also why they wanted a hobbit to carry the ring and why they can resist it for so long. There's also something to say for Tolkien using his experiences in the war as inspiration, simply being a normal guy but being forced into this big battle with nothing.
If you want to know more about Middle Earth and the story I suggest reading the books, it's an amazing experience. Apart from the three books in the The Lord of the Rings trilogy, there's also the Simarillion which is basically a book about the mythology and societies of Middle Earth.

Basically, the power of the ring depends on the wearer. Hobbits are increadibly weak creatures, their only strength is that they're small and can go unnoticed pretty easily, which is why the ring makes them invisible. The fact that they're so weak is also why they're the only ones who don't get corrupted by it (as easily). This is why people like Gandalf can't use the ring, because he'll be corrupted by its power and become increadibly powerful. It's also why they can't use the eagles to fly to Mordor, because the eagles are very powerful creatures and will be corrupted by it.

      @Glorfindel_117 4 ปีที่แล้ว +141

In way of some helpful correction, hobbits dont go invisible via the ring because they are naturally sneaky, that's just what the ring does. It puts you in the Shadow World/Spirit World, which is why we see the Nazgul as glowing humans. Elves are 50/50 body/spirit and can see both worlds, which is why Legolas could see the Dead of Dunharrow before we could. The Ring just enhances the power it's wearer has while making it easier for anyone bound to it (Sauron/nazgul) to find them. That's why Gandalf refused to touch it, because he's a Maiar (angel) just like Sauron, so he'd become the new evil lord by it's corruption and enhancement of his ability to rule. In Tolkien's books, magic is the ability to control other's will. And to use it often is to give in to the evil inside you, or your desire to rule by power rather than by right.

    • @lauraroth6630
      @lauraroth6630 ปีที่แล้ว +52

I also think based on many things that Tolkien said, is that he didn’t even think abt the eagles taking Frodo and Sam to Mordor when he originally wrote LOTR because having the eagles take them to Mordor doesn’t make for a story nearly as interesting as Frodo and Sam (and Gollum) having to make the trek themselves. So that’s why he then clarified later that the eagles only came to help Frodo and Sam later is because they’re a race that doesn’t participate in Middle Earth affairs, and only made exceptions as a favor to Gandalf, who is a minor god. So instead of them participating in destroying the ring, they only swoop in after the ring’s destroyed to save Frodo and Sam. And the biggest reason for why the eagles didn’t take them to Mordor was bc the whole mission relied on stealth: Frodo and Sam needed Sauron to not see them, otherwise the mission would’ve failed, and of course, if they in on the backs of huge eagles, Sauron’s gonna be able to spot them and stop them from miles away.

The movie adds a moment or two of Sauron seeing the hobbits, but apparently he doesn’t realize what it is he is seeing. They’re added for dramatic effect and don’t make too much sense, but I just imagine that he doesn’t realize who they are somehow. Near the end, he senses Frodo putting the ring in Mount Doom and sends the Nazgûl
About the eagles, it wouldn’t make any sense tactically to take the eagles to Mordor with the Ring. Sauron would see the eagles and send all his forces after the eagles. The Nazgûl’s flying fellbeasts would fight the eagles, and/or the army of orcs would shoot them down. Sauron’s forces were more powerful than the forces of good, so they had to be stealthy about it.

I like to think Sauron didn’t realize what he was seeing in that moment because if he did but did nothing about the hobbit with his ring inside Mordor, then he’s the biggest idiot to ever live. The film added that moment to be more dramatic, but it makes Sauron look dumb if he directly looks at Frodo and does nothing.
Either way, if they came in on giant eagles, they’d be much more conspicuous, and not even movie Sauron would ignore that. The mission could only succeed if Sauron did not know about their plan to destroy the Ring and was unaware of the Ring reaching Mount Doom. Sauron’s forces were too powerful to fight directly.

There’s a lot of stuff they don’t have time to explicitly explain, but it’s still in the movies if you read the books. Here’s a few examples:
The other rings DO actually do stuff, but like…..most of the races that have one of the rings of power kinda…agreed not to use them anymore since they found out that the one ring actually has the power to highjack and corrupt all the other ones if Sauron wields it.
The “invisibility cloaks” they have actually are enchanted. They’re elven cloaks that don’t grant “invisibility” per se, but excellent camouflage. Like you saw, they can perfectly mimic the scenery around them and look like rocks or even trees, and grass.
The bread they eat is called Lembas bread and is also enchanted. A single bite or mouthful can sustain a grown man for an entire day. That’s why they don’t TECHNICALLY need any other rations, it’s just kinda boring tasting to have a bite of bread for each meal.
Everyone points out that “why didn’t they have the eagles take them into Mordor?” But you have to realize the eagles are their own race and society that doesn’t really care what happens to the world of men, and they are a very prideful and cynical race. In the prequel, the hobbit, they only BARELY talk to Gandalf and give Bilbo and the dwarves he travels with help like…for a few days before dropping them off and not wanting anything else to do with them.
Aragorn isn’t immortal or even have a lifespan as long as an elf, but he is descended from a special line of men that were blessed with long life, but they almost have all died out. Aragorn I think lived until he was about 200-250 years old. Arwen outlived him by a lot tho, I think she was alive for almost 800 years. Although, like….if Arwen was gonna end up with any mortal dude, at least Aragorn lived quite a bit longer than most

Again, the "why not the eagles straight to mordor" argument.
The eye of sauron will see them from a bjhkjjkhiillion miles away, and send the fell beasts against them. This is why the mission must be secret.
And the eagles are sons of Manwë, a literal angel. They basically do their own shit and answer to none but their father. They only help Gandalf because whenever he calls them, the eagles' lives are never directly at risk.
Oh and, the rings' powers were to preserve magic. Magic is slowly disappearing from the world, and Sauron had the rings made and give them to the elves dwarves and men so that the rings' powers would allow them still to use magic. However, Sauron's own ring had the ability to control the minds of those who wore the others. The elves found out quickly and took them off. The dwarves were impervious to magic and were not affected by the mind control. Humans though...
But when sauron was defeated thousands of years ago, the elves put on the rings again, so that they can continue to use magic.

The whole point of the Ring was that it was meant to BIND the other rings Sauron gave the other races. Dwarves were already greedy but the rings made them more Greedy. The Kings of men were transformed into the Ring Wraiths (Black Riders), Elves were largely unaffected bc Sauron underestimated them. The One Ring had a conscious and would corrupt the user to do evil. That is why Hobbits were the best to take it, bc they have very little ambition for power and they can resist it more. The Eagles are their own race that only helped Gandalf bc he saved their King once and it was good they never flew them to Mordor bc the mission was about stealth. If Sauron saw them coming they would have never made it.
The Lord of the Rings trilogy is about how you don't have to be a big force to destroy evil, and it played the fact that the small folk were underestimated but not in a way where they single handedly kill and entire army. Sauron underestimated the Hobbits by believing they were not a threat and thus could do him no harm. Also one last thing, the magic in this world is not supposed to be flashy, more subtle and easy going. Not a lot of destructive magic like in other fantasy worlds. The magic of the Ring was corruption based, Gandalf... had more to do with light and fire ish magic, Saruman was the big flashy one.

@@fateslayer3835 That's not completely true, yes they did not transform right away, they first became mighty and powerful, but it was not, when they died that the rings took control. As they were seemingly immortal (at least prolonged), but after some time life became unbearable (tormented by delusions) for them, and one after the other fell under the servitude of the rings and so they entered the realm of the Shadows and became invisible forever except to Sauron. And yes the 3 most powerful rings were made without Sauron knowing, but that only made him not take them away, and was not the reason for the elven, to not be corrupted, as they wear the original owner of all the 19 rings but when Sauron put his on, trying to enslave them, they just took them of, until they found a way to shield them from him, but Sauron came and took the rings (except the 3 he didn't know of).

The three hairs she gives Gimli actually have a really cool and sweet backstory.
Thousands of years before the most talented elf craftsman of middle earth demanded a single hair from her head to infuse their 'golden beauty' into three gems he crafted. Those gems were the silmarils and they sparked the second war of power between the original dark lord and the other god-like beings of middle earth that tore the planet apart. But she looked into his soul and saw that he wanted her hair in order to own something unique and of beauty that no other elf could possess and found his reason insufficient so she denied him. She denied this elf who was basically a craftsman so talented he was considered godlike by all others in middle earth. Then thousands of years later a dwarf she did not know came to her kingdom (dwarfs and elves had a long and fraught past) and she offered him anything he wished. He asked for a single strand of her hair to remember the beauty of the time he spent in her kingdom. Touched by his reasoning she gave him not one but three.

The Ring is literally part of Sauron himself, why the hell would it help the people dead set on destroying it? Throughout the three films it tries it's very damndest to betray the Fellowship from corrupting Boromir (temporarily), to attracting the Nazgûl (Ringwraiths) whenever it can, to corrupting Frodo at the very end.
The entire point of the Ring is its ability to corrupt those around it, it couldn't help even if it was inclined to.

It also has a will of it's own. A will that corresponds with that of Sauron. It let's him know where the bearer of the ring is - when used, and will intentionally slip away if it does not desire to be carried anymore. It also seduces everyone around it to desire it beyond anything else, like a severe drug - while keeping the carrier alive indefinitely like it did with both Bilbo and Gollum. Not quite sure why Gollum was not aging the same way as Bilbo rapidly did however after losing the ring, considering Bilbo was ringless for a much shorter time than Gollum was. It's however evil and destroying it was the whole point of the book, as the existance of it was the only thing maintaining Sauron's seat of power and ability to take form on Middle Earth. And it's absense from Sauron's hands is the only thing making it possible to actually defeat Sauron. Only a few individuals in the world of Tolkien can wield it's full power, such as Gandalf, Saurman or Galadriel and a handful of others - but even then it will twist and corrupt them into brutal monsters as they do, to the point of controlling them. The reason a hobbit was chosen for the task of carrying the ring was because they were considered much more difficult to corrupt as they were innocent and mostly powerless by nature, not to mention inconspicuous due to their small size and less than intimidating stature, thus possibly able to sneak past the formidable defences of Mordor without much of a fight. The other rings had their own magical powers of a less extreme nature - and could be controlled by Sauron if he held the main ring of power himself as I understand it (as was the purpose of those rings - to be tools for puppeting the most powerful individuals in Middle Earth by seducing them with magical powers).

It makes me hyper conscious of myself when I watch the movies with someone who's seeing it for the first time. I want them to be immersed in the movie so I don't want to talk to them while watching and I don't want to be that annoying person who ruins the scenes by throwing LOTR trivia around. But at the same time I always want to tell them that Viggo Mortensen broke his toe when he kicked that helmet that's why his scream of pain was so realistic. So I compartmentalize my hopefully fun facts after we finish the movie and that's when I bombard them with my highly unnecessary LOTR knowledge. lol.
