Well aragorn is 89 in the series, and lives up to two hundred and something. They were together since he was about 50, so they stayed together to his death, after 150/160 years. In the end she died a year after him, renouncing her mortality.
ALicia c You mean Eowen? First, she’s not technically a princess, she’s just the heir to the throne of Rohan. And when the heck did she do that? She ended up with Feramir son of Denethor son of Ecthelion so I’m confused as to where that happened.
"why wont Gandalf cast the spells??" I too asked myself this question. Then I took a class on Tolkien and learned the way. Gandalf, and the other wizards, are basically demi-gods. each stands for something. Gandalf's is Wisdom; he guides humanity to their own choices and does not rule over them or bend nature to his whim with his powers (unlike Saruman). And another fun fact. The Balrog used to be one of them! But it got too greedy and was consumed by the power it craved and turned into the Balrog we all hate today.
Balrog were not exactly greedy, they were Mai corrupted by Melkor (Morgoth) the strongest of the Valar who rebelled against the rest of the gods and Iluvatar, he also corrupted Mairon (Sauron), the strongest Maia and made him his first general.
OMG thank you for answering this question! For so long I've wondered about the wizards magic and it's usage! I kinda understood they don't bend nature when in the prequel Gandalf told Bilbo that it'll continue to rain and that it's nothing he could do about that, but didn't fully understood the concept! I also haven't read the books so kimds my fault and the fact about the Balrog!!!
this was actually Orlando Bloom's first roll. They called him straight outta acting school and offered him the part. He called back and was like what really are you joking
Really? I thought he looked younger in Troy. 🤔 Also, I don't know if this true or not, but I read somewhere that he first auditioned for the role of Strider then had the Casting people tell him he was more suited for the character Legolas.
@@nobodyqwertyu No you're absolutely right I thought this was his first role. First role in a major film is still a big deal but I didn't know about Midsommer Murders at all.
every lotr fan will tell you this but when aragorn kicked the helmet the actor actually broke his toe which is why he yelled so much and they just kept it in lol
Fun fact, Peter Jackson couldn't get enough extras for the Helms Deep scene, so he made the controversial decision to hire real orcs as actors. Before that point, orcs were not accepted in Hollywood. But now, most actors are orcs wearing human makeup. It's amazing how much progress has been made in so little time.
i still find it so cute that after the lotr won an oscar, instead of going to the countless oscars after parties they went to the official lotr fan club after party and spent the night with the franchise's biggest fans. it seems like this movie was definitely hard af to work on but so much fun nonetheless, the reunion in 2020 was all my lotr loving heart needed and more
also in the scenes where they run together all the actors are badly hurt... Legolas= Broken Rib. Gimli= Dislocated Knee And Aragorn = The 2 borken toes... those guys are insane for pushing thru that
"The CG is so bad" - listen, I saw Bilbo's demonic freakout for the first time at 5 years old and that's still a recurring nightmare, no joke. The CG in this holds up and where it needs to, it *slaps*.

I can’t believe he cut out the “I would have followed you, my brother, my captain, my king”… it’s such a great line and so memorable! It shows Boromirs redemption perfectly
Yes when he acknowledges him as King, it was a great moment for Aragorn and Boromir because it told Aragorn that his people still needed a King and he was It.

The powers of the One Ring are as follows. When a normal person puts it on (not an angelic being such as Gandalf or an Elf like Elrond or Galadriel for example as they can resist the following effect) it sends you to the “other side/shadow realm” so you turn invisible, however Sauron and the Nazgûl know where you are. The Ring also boosts any power and skill you have to S+ Tier levels. Some think that maybe because Hobbits are good at sneaking, this is what turns them invisible but that is just speculation. If Aragorn were to have the One Ring, his sword skills would be unmatched. If Gandalf or Galadriel had it then their magical power would be Godlike (although they would also slowly be corrupted by its power) The Three Elven Rings still boost the power of Galadriel, Elrond and Gandalf with the powers of preservation, healing and willpower respectively, along with an overall power boost. The Rings of Galadriel and Elrond also help hide/shield/protect their locations from Sauron’s forces and Gandalf’s ring has an aura of willpower and drive to help push those around him to victory. The Dwarven Rings only increased the Dwarves’ greed for gold and jewels etc which didn’t help Sauron in his initial plan which was to control the minds of all those who wore the Rings. That’s why he gave the rings out to the leaders of each race. The Nine Rings that were given to the race of Men (Humans) were the only ones that worked for Sauron as humans are most easily corrupted. The Dwarves were too stubborn to be bent to his will and the Elves (who’s Rings were not touched by Sauron) took their Rings off as soon as they learned of his deception and only put them back on after Sauron was defeated the first time (as seen at the start of the first film). And those are the powers of the Rings, thank you for listening to my TED Talk. 😊
I didn't know this. So the Hobbits turn invisible because they have high stealth attribute to begin with? If that is true then that's really cool! Thanks.
@@ImALefty08 Thats one of the fan theories. However the movies disagree with this as Isildur also goes invisible but the book is much older, hence the fan theory. It could just be that every single person the reader/viewer sees use the ring is also in DIRE NEED of avoiding being caught at the time of wearing it, so it's possible that it's known ability to amplify the wearers innate power manifests their will to be hidden. It's not explained in detail but that's what makes it as good as it is.
You may have watched the extended version, but you haven’t lived until you’ve watched the extra extended version of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring but every time Samwise Gamgee takes a step towards Mordor it plays the “This is it” “this is what?” “If I take one more step, it’ll be the farthest I’ve ever been” clip. It’s 9 hours long.
AnonymousPiLover nah i mean a lot of stuff in the movie is practical- like the orcs are just dudes in makeup, but they end up using a ton of cgi on various stuff as well. dylan was right, the group is obviously green screened in at the end. sucks that it ruined what is otherwise an amazing moment.
I mean...he has eyes? It's obviously green screened, and although most of the cgi in these films holds up incredibly well, that scene definitely does not. lotr fans are so easily offended lol
I kind of enjoyed that, since I wasn't hugely invested in their relationship (until I read the appendices that is) and seeing them through the eyes of someone who is was actually really nice.
vigo, the actor who plays Aragorn actually broke his toe when he kicked that helmet. that specific shot made it into the cut. that's why he screams like that. also, Gandalf bumping his head in the early part of the first movie was not scripted. it was an accident.
Also the dagger he deflects when he fights the Uru'kai (cant remember how to spell it) was a real dagger that the actor playing the uruk accidentally through at him instead of past him. Viggo deflecting the dagger saved him from serious injury or potentially death.

A few fun facts to LOTR: -Tolkien actually said, that he likes Sam more than Frodo -Aragorn isn't aging because he's related to the Dúnedain who live three times longer than normal men -In the books there's not a lot said about Legolas or his backstory. I think the main reason he's in there is because he and Gimmly represent two groups, who originally didn't like each other but were able to overcome their differences and become friends.
Well, not 3 times longer per se, since their life expectancy is shrinking (Elros lived 500 years or more, Aragorn only 200 something, and he had the longest life-span in a loooong time (but I guess a lot of his ancestors got killed rather than died))
I wanna add in that Sir Christopher Lee (Saruman) knew J.R.R. Tolkien and he said that if his books were ever converted into a physical medium, he wished that Lee would play the role of Gandalf.
Also the " three strands of your hair" thing is actually a call back to when Feanor (asshole supreme) demanded a strand from her and she refused. Gimli on the other hand asks politely, as a compliment to her, and she gives him three as a sign that she honors him above even other elves.
The ring being a hindrance is the point. People want it because it’s a legendary object and they believe it will give them power. It’s part of the lie. Also, the ring has a will of it’s own and can influence people psychically. The greater your desire for power is the easier it is for the ring to influence you. That’s why hobbits make ideal ring bearers as they generally don’t care much for power.
even gollum after being corrupted never thinks to use its power beyond using it to kill and eat the occasional orc. another interesting thing is while most people are attached to it for the power it gives, the hobbits see it as a precious possession and don’t care about its actual power
Well no the rings power is based on the power of the wearer. And hobbits are the lowest power level species. This is why Gandalf won’t touch it because as he says. It would wield a power to great and terrible to imagine.
Fun fact: The crowd simulation during the battle scenes was the first of its kind. They figured out how to animate each individual rider/soldier, while keeping them as a unit, which had never been done before. That's how they got all the horses, and created the basis for big fight scenes in the future!
Yes, vfx house Weta developed entirely new custom software, made specifically for the crowd simulation in this film. Which built the foundation for all crowd sims we see in film today.🎉
They actually created a system that would simulate the battle tactics. But once they hit start one side ran away, so they had to dumb the ai down a bit, so they keep fighting unless told otherwise
He almost drowned because his armour was to heavy & Got caught in an undertow whilst floating down river & my favorite is when the stunt man blinded by his orc make up throws a real dagger a little to close to viggos face but he just deflects it with his sword
they heard all the complaints about legolas personality or lack of it and promptly decided to give him a whole arc in the hobbit trilogy, even though he wasn’t in the book
It kind of made sense that he was more bold and wild at a younger age, but it wasn't necessary and the cgi was awful. I don't understand what people mean he has no personality in the main trilogy, though
The first thing he said was, "You cannot pass," stating the Balrog's attempts will be futile. The second thing he said was, "You SHALL not pass," meaning "I will not allow you to pass." Subtle difference, but it has weight.
I can't agree, saw both the director's cut and the theatrical cut Both have their good, but I do still prefer the theatrical cut. I'm sure a lot of people agree with me and a lot also disagree. Personal opinions be personal opinions
Some interesting lore concerning Galadriel's hair. LONG before the events of the books, the most badass elf to ever live asked Galadriel for a hair. She never gave it to him because he only wanted it out of vanity. He asked her three times. She still said no. But Gimli, a dwarf of no great significance, asks her for a hair. She gave him three. Gimli fell in love with Galadriel. In the books he cries when leaving Lothlorien because he knows he's never going to see her again. Which is also why he asked for a hair.
Before modern times, people would often keep locks of hair from their loved ones, to remember them and feel connected to them. Especially if they had passed or if they were moving far away since there was no photography or telephones or anything. So definitely not an abnormal creepy thing.
When he sees the flag falling and says if that isn’t symbolism I don’t know what is. The best part about that scene is it was completely unplanned. The wind just happened to tear it off the pole and fall in front of Aragorn like that.

they really did need to explain the power of the rings better in the films (theater version). I didn't read the book til after I watched the trilogy, and I was confused af as to what the importance/powers of the rings were, and why everyone even wanted it.
1:08:00 the funny thing is, Frodo is supposed to be old enough to be Sam's DAD. He looks in his (human) 20s because of the ring but he's middle aged. Sam was the son of Frodo's gardener. So a lot of the shippy stuff is supposed to be read as father-son like. Also, Pippin is literally underaged! Hobbits come of age at 33, Pippin is like 22. If he were a human he'd be a teenager. Frodo was their uncle-friend.
Frodo is literally 33. His birthday is the same as BIlbos, September 22nd. Frodos quest is part of his coming of age. Bilbo is 111 when LOTR happens and hes had the ring for 50 years or so.
I'm just going to clear up some questions for those who are interested: 1. The wizards aren't what you think they are. They're not really spell-using people, they're almost a type of angel and were made by the Gods to look after the world they created. Also, Gandalf didn't turn the moth into an eagle. The eagles are creatures created by a god just like any living creature in Middle-Earth, but he called upon them for help. 2. What the rings do is they give the carrier the power to protect what they desire most. The dwarves desire treasure so they kept finding more and more gold until dragons came and ate them and their rings, basically. The elves love nature and the world around them, so their rings preserve their cities and basically make them livable for the elves. Kind of weirdly explained probably but basically as the world was created there was a certain amount of magic in it and it's declining over time. Elves feed off that so when at the end the rings lose their power after the one ring is destroyed and don't preserve that anymore, all the elves leave the world to go to Valinor (Heaven kinda). Men care about their lives the most, so the rings stretched it so thin until they became wraiths basically. The one ring is different since it wasn't forged with the others. It was made from malintent and basically only exists to oppress others and it only listens to Sauron. That's why it's continuously trying to be worn or escape or be found, so it can get back to Sauron. 3. Aragorn is a special human-ish. Basically, his bloodline has some elf blood so he's blessed with a longer life, but he's still mortal. The Evenstar (the necklace he got from his elf girlfriend) does protect him but doesn't necessarily grant him more life. 4. It was Tolkien's vision for the hobbits to be simple creatures. They're not accustomed to life outside of their safe shire, so going out and doing this mission was their big storyline and their main character points. You could give Frodo powers with the ring but he wouldn't really use it since that's what hobbits are like. That's also why they wanted a hobbit to carry the ring and why they can resist it for so long. There's also something to say for Tolkien using his experiences in the war as inspiration, simply being a normal guy but being forced into this big battle with nothing. If you want to know more about Middle Earth and the story I suggest reading the books, it's an amazing experience. Apart from the three books in the The Lord of the Rings trilogy, there's also the Simarillion which is basically a book about the mythology and societies of Middle Earth.
@@psychobratt The Dunedain were men who were given longer life by the Valar to live on the island of Numenor. @@ArthurDeaville Elrond is Half-Elven; he and his brother Elros were the children of Two Elf-Human pairs. They were each given the choice to be human or elf. Elrond chose Elf, Elros chose human. @@callisastapp7160 Arwen was an eleventh hour addition to the books by Tolkien. That is why she was present in only 2 scenes in the book and her story with Aragorn told only in the appendices.
In the books, it's implied that the rings enhance one's inherent abilities, and hobbits are naturally sneaky so the enhancement a hobbit receives is invisibility
In the spiritual world, beings are invisible to those in the physical world. This is why Isildur, Bilbo, and Frodo become invisible when they wear the Ring-because they are no longer in the physical world.
Basically, the power of the ring depends on the wearer. Hobbits are increadibly weak creatures, their only strength is that they're small and can go unnoticed pretty easily, which is why the ring makes them invisible. The fact that they're so weak is also why they're the only ones who don't get corrupted by it (as easily). This is why people like Gandalf can't use the ring, because he'll be corrupted by its power and become increadibly powerful. It's also why they can't use the eagles to fly to Mordor, because the eagles are very powerful creatures and will be corrupted by it.
THANK YOU Gandalf's quote "Understand, Frodo, I would use this Ring from the desire to do good. But through me, it would wield a power too great and terrible to imagine" and Galadriel's quote "Instead of a Dark Lord, you would have a queen, not dark but beautiful and terrible as the dawn! Tempestuous as the sea, and stronger than the foundations of the earth! All shall love me and despair!"
In way of some helpful correction, hobbits dont go invisible via the ring because they are naturally sneaky, that's just what the ring does. It puts you in the Shadow World/Spirit World, which is why we see the Nazgul as glowing humans. Elves are 50/50 body/spirit and can see both worlds, which is why Legolas could see the Dead of Dunharrow before we could. The Ring just enhances the power it's wearer has while making it easier for anyone bound to it (Sauron/nazgul) to find them. That's why Gandalf refused to touch it, because he's a Maiar (angel) just like Sauron, so he'd become the new evil lord by it's corruption and enhancement of his ability to rule. In Tolkien's books, magic is the ability to control other's will. And to use it often is to give in to the evil inside you, or your desire to rule by power rather than by right.
*Fun fact:* The actor who plays Aragon actually broke two of his toes during that “stunt” of kicking the helmet, so uhh.. That is legitimately a scream of pain 28:20
Tis I actually I wasn’t sure myself, I remembered it as his whole foot. But I Googled it and there it said two toes so.. But if you find something where it says otherwise I’d like to see!
I love how "why not just the eagles" is SUCH a common question Tolkien himself realized they broke his plot so he added info in the books as to why the eagles wouldn't help most of the time. "the rings were more of a hindrance than a help" - that, exactly, is the point Tolkien was trying to make
I also think based on many things that Tolkien said, is that he didn’t even think abt the eagles taking Frodo and Sam to Mordor when he originally wrote LOTR because having the eagles take them to Mordor doesn’t make for a story nearly as interesting as Frodo and Sam (and Gollum) having to make the trek themselves. So that’s why he then clarified later that the eagles only came to help Frodo and Sam later is because they’re a race that doesn’t participate in Middle Earth affairs, and only made exceptions as a favor to Gandalf, who is a minor god. So instead of them participating in destroying the ring, they only swoop in after the ring’s destroyed to save Frodo and Sam. And the biggest reason for why the eagles didn’t take them to Mordor was bc the whole mission relied on stealth: Frodo and Sam needed Sauron to not see them, otherwise the mission would’ve failed, and of course, if they in on the backs of huge eagles, Sauron’s gonna be able to spot them and stop them from miles away.
The movie adds a moment or two of Sauron seeing the hobbits, but apparently he doesn’t realize what it is he is seeing. They’re added for dramatic effect and don’t make too much sense, but I just imagine that he doesn’t realize who they are somehow. Near the end, he senses Frodo putting the ring in Mount Doom and sends the Nazgûl About the eagles, it wouldn’t make any sense tactically to take the eagles to Mordor with the Ring. Sauron would see the eagles and send all his forces after the eagles. The Nazgûl’s flying fellbeasts would fight the eagles, and/or the army of orcs would shoot them down. Sauron’s forces were more powerful than the forces of good, so they had to be stealthy about it.
@@vinnicinhus44 I remember that from the film. I like to think Sauron didn’t realize what he was seeing in that moment because if he did but did nothing about the hobbit with his ring inside Mordor, then he’s the biggest idiot to ever live. The film added that moment to be more dramatic, but it makes Sauron look dumb if he directly looks at Frodo and does nothing. Either way, if they came in on giant eagles, they’d be much more conspicuous, and not even movie Sauron would ignore that. The mission could only succeed if Sauron did not know about their plan to destroy the Ring and was unaware of the Ring reaching Mount Doom. Sauron’s forces were too powerful to fight directly.
Wizards in Lord of the Rings can be very confusing for people because they are both immensely powerful and very restricted on what they are able to do.
l lawiett He had kicked it over and over, but Peter Jackson wasn’t satisfied so Viggo kicked it again, broke his toe, screamed in pure frustration and Peter was like “YES! That’s it! That’s the one!”
Actually, he did know. He kicked it in improvisation, Peter Jackson liked it but wanted to reshoot it, so he did it a couple more times, but the last time he broke TWO of his toes. So... yeah.
l lawiett No he was supposed to scream anyway, and he already knew it was metal. But on the last shot (because he already filmed kicking it multiple times), he broke two toes doing it, so the end part of his scream was even louder and longer (since he was in pain).
There’s a lot of stuff they don’t have time to explicitly explain, but it’s still in the movies if you read the books. Here’s a few examples: The other rings DO actually do stuff, but like…..most of the races that have one of the rings of power kinda…agreed not to use them anymore since they found out that the one ring actually has the power to highjack and corrupt all the other ones if Sauron wields it. The “invisibility cloaks” they have actually are enchanted. They’re elven cloaks that don’t grant “invisibility” per se, but excellent camouflage. Like you saw, they can perfectly mimic the scenery around them and look like rocks or even trees, and grass. The bread they eat is called Lembas bread and is also enchanted. A single bite or mouthful can sustain a grown man for an entire day. That’s why they don’t TECHNICALLY need any other rations, it’s just kinda boring tasting to have a bite of bread for each meal. Everyone points out that “why didn’t they have the eagles take them into Mordor?” But you have to realize the eagles are their own race and society that doesn’t really care what happens to the world of men, and they are a very prideful and cynical race. In the prequel, the hobbit, they only BARELY talk to Gandalf and give Bilbo and the dwarves he travels with help like…for a few days before dropping them off and not wanting anything else to do with them. Aragorn isn’t immortal or even have a lifespan as long as an elf, but he is descended from a special line of men that were blessed with long life, but they almost have all died out. Aragorn I think lived until he was about 200-250 years old. Arwen outlived him by a lot tho, I think she was alive for almost 800 years. Although, like….if Arwen was gonna end up with any mortal dude, at least Aragorn lived quite a bit longer than most
I think the significance of the friendship between Legolas and Gimli is another element that is more fleshed out in the books but is still shown in the films.
I feel like you have been so used to fantasy stories where the magic is superpowered that you kind of missed the point of magic in LOTR -- it's supposed to be a burden rather than a help more often than not. This isn't Harry Potter where you can shoot magic as controllably as a muggle firing a gun. This is a world where magic is mysterious and hard to control and full of unintended consequences.
Actually Gandalf can’t use the flame of Anor because the valinor would not let him use his full power on middle earth. The Maia “Gandalf’s race” are especially Demi Gods with godlike power so the Valinor sent them just to guide the people of middle earth
@@sketchydeer5044 no because when the wizards went to Middle-Earth they were not allowed to match strength with Sauron. Their sole purpose was to guide and aid them not to be their leaders.
also, elven magic is closer to art than actual magic in the books. their creations (clothes, weaponry, songs) are superior because their understanding of art, nature and the world itself is on a completely different level. elves are more like artists or 'scientists' in some cases than mages
Again, the "why not the eagles straight to mordor" argument. The eye of sauron will see them from a bjhkjjkhiillion miles away, and send the fell beasts against them. This is why the mission must be secret. And the eagles are sons of Manwë, a literal angel. They basically do their own shit and answer to none but their father. They only help Gandalf because whenever he calls them, the eagles' lives are never directly at risk. Oh and, the rings' powers were to preserve magic. Magic is slowly disappearing from the world, and Sauron had the rings made and give them to the elves dwarves and men so that the rings' powers would allow them still to use magic. However, Sauron's own ring had the ability to control the minds of those who wore the others. The elves found out quickly and took them off. The dwarves were impervious to magic and were not affected by the mind control. Humans though... But when sauron was defeated thousands of years ago, the elves put on the rings again, so that they can continue to use magic.
His incorrect knowledge of the lore and the plan that followed might have worked though. Lol. Sauron would have seen and stopped the Eagles, but millions of giant ants with one peacing his life into a volcano with the ring might work. Legolas: A diversion.
Even though not all of the CGI still looks good considering the level of detail possible today, I still say the majority of it holds up because the animation, compositing, cinematography, and miniatures were all top notch
Most of the stuff they had to invent for these movies, of course it'll look rough but it holds up better than some movies made in the last couple years 😬
The whole point of the Ring was that it was meant to BIND the other rings Sauron gave the other races. Dwarves were already greedy but the rings made them more Greedy. The Kings of men were transformed into the Ring Wraiths (Black Riders), Elves were largely unaffected bc Sauron underestimated them. The One Ring had a conscious and would corrupt the user to do evil. That is why Hobbits were the best to take it, bc they have very little ambition for power and they can resist it more. The Eagles are their own race that only helped Gandalf bc he saved their King once and it was good they never flew them to Mordor bc the mission was about stealth. If Sauron saw them coming they would have never made it. The Lord of the Rings trilogy is about how you don't have to be a big force to destroy evil, and it played the fact that the small folk were underestimated but not in a way where they single handedly kill and entire army. Sauron underestimated the Hobbits by believing they were not a threat and thus could do him no harm. Also one last thing, the magic in this world is not supposed to be flashy, more subtle and easy going. Not a lot of destructive magic like in other fantasy worlds. The magic of the Ring was corruption based, Gandalf... had more to do with light and fire ish magic, Saruman was the big flashy one.

Triend to watch the 1st movie with a friend and she was on her phone not paying attention and would ask stupid questions like, why don't they just burry the ring? or who is that guy (Gandalf)? and, Whats going on I don't understand?
The reason the 3 elven rings didnt corrupt the elves was beucase of Celebrimbor, he made the 3 rings before sauron tricked him, thats why the 3 rings are ”pure” beucase sauron didnt knew about those rings until he tortured celebrimbor. Thats why those rings doesnt corrupt their wearer.
And the 9 rings of men didnt transform the men as soon as they put on the rings, it was When they died that the rings took control and corrupted their physical form and made them ringwraiths with a desire to only serve Sauron.
@@fateslayer3835 That's not completely true, yes they did not transform right away, they first became mighty and powerful, but it was not, when they died that the rings took control. As they were seemingly immortal (at least prolonged), but after some time life became unbearable (tormented by delusions) for them, and one after the other fell under the servitude of the rings and so they entered the realm of the Shadows and became invisible forever except to Sauron. And yes the 3 most powerful rings were made without Sauron knowing, but that only made him not take them away, and was not the reason for the elven, to not be corrupted, as they wear the original owner of all the 19 rings but when Sauron put his on, trying to enslave them, they just took them of, until they found a way to shield them from him, but Sauron came and took the rings (except the 3 he didn't know of).
To be fair, Legolas's only piece of an character arc is "become less prejudice against dwarves" which isn't really put in the foreground either. As a life long fan of this trilogy that kinda bothers me too.
@@SaveMeMoon i mean, kinda but that phrase is kind of an understatement, after everything Legolas and Gimli are like bff's nad they go on their own adventures together, and to be fair literally non of the elfs have a real good character arc because i mean, like Dylan said, theyre all almost perfect (and also not that relevant to the story except for Elrond and Legolas even though hes just a cool side character) and that was the point of the race when they were created (even if the silmarillion shows some more dark side of the elves)
@@marykay8587 I've only read "The Hobbit" so I wouldn't know. Are the other books good? My husband said that he's read them a long time ago when he was a teenager.
The three hairs she gives Gimli actually have a really cool and sweet backstory. Thousands of years before the most talented elf craftsman of middle earth demanded a single hair from her head to infuse their 'golden beauty' into three gems he crafted. Those gems were the silmarils and they sparked the second war of power between the original dark lord and the other god-like beings of middle earth that tore the planet apart. But she looked into his soul and saw that he wanted her hair in order to own something unique and of beauty that no other elf could possess and found his reason insufficient so she denied him. She denied this elf who was basically a craftsman so talented he was considered godlike by all others in middle earth. Then thousands of years later a dwarf she did not know came to her kingdom (dwarfs and elves had a long and fraught past) and she offered him anything he wished. He asked for a single strand of her hair to remember the beauty of the time he spent in her kingdom. Touched by his reasoning she gave him not one but three.
Fun fact; none of the stars were there all together for the ending shot; so the way they did that is actually pretty cool! They all shot individually xD
I cannot believe how much he was distracted by the cgi etc. LOTR is known for having timeless effects that were really good for their time and still are. Sure, the slow motion scenes aren't the best but otherwise I don't see a problem. Besides, nowadays movies like Marvel movies that should have amazing graphics do not have pleasing graphics. Sure they look quite flawless but they do not look real! There's one really good video about this matter on youtube but I cannot remember its name, I think it was something about LOTR's cinematics.
@@MrNorbo95 jesus christ. I love these films but Dylans video is literally made to find the comedy in the films... Everyone can agree that the CGI in these films are fucking awful compared to now but that's to be expected. Dont be such a snob.
TooooniMichelle Fair enough! I didn’t realise that was the purpose. I legit thought it was just gonna be an honest reaction. If I knew the purpose was just entirely for him to make jokes I wouldn’t have been as bothered. Also to ‘everyone can agree the CGI is fucking awful compared to modern standards’ is highly ignorant. As the person above you commented, LOTR is known for having timeless effects. When Dylan said the CGI of Gandalf fighting the balrog was awful my eyes legit bulged in shock.
One of the small details i love about these movies is how Frodos neck becomes more and more scarred the longer he has the ring, at the end his entire neck is completely corrupted and scarred by it. Recently rewatched these movies and damn they're so good
'The Ring was more of a hinderance than a help' The Ring is literally part of Sauron himself, why the hell would it help the people dead set on destroying it? Throughout the three films it tries it's very damndest to betray the Fellowship from corrupting Boromir (temporarily), to attracting the Nazgûl (Ringwraiths) whenever it can, to corrupting Frodo at the very end. The entire point of the Ring is its ability to corrupt those around it, it couldn't help even if it was inclined to.
It also has a will of it's own. A will that corresponds with that of Sauron. It let's him know where the bearer of the ring is - when used, and will intentionally slip away if it does not desire to be carried anymore. It also seduces everyone around it to desire it beyond anything else, like a severe drug - while keeping the carrier alive indefinitely like it did with both Bilbo and Gollum. Not quite sure why Gollum was not aging the same way as Bilbo rapidly did however after losing the ring, considering Bilbo was ringless for a much shorter time than Gollum was. It's however evil and destroying it was the whole point of the book, as the existance of it was the only thing maintaining Sauron's seat of power and ability to take form on Middle Earth. And it's absense from Sauron's hands is the only thing making it possible to actually defeat Sauron. Only a few individuals in the world of Tolkien can wield it's full power, such as Gandalf, Saurman or Galadriel and a handful of others - but even then it will twist and corrupt them into brutal monsters as they do, to the point of controlling them. The reason a hobbit was chosen for the task of carrying the ring was because they were considered much more difficult to corrupt as they were innocent and mostly powerless by nature, not to mention inconspicuous due to their small size and less than intimidating stature, thus possibly able to sneak past the formidable defences of Mordor without much of a fight. The other rings had their own magical powers of a less extreme nature - and could be controlled by Sauron if he held the main ring of power himself as I understand it (as was the purpose of those rings - to be tools for puppeting the most powerful individuals in Middle Earth by seducing them with magical powers).
@@samilou I'm no huge Tolkien scholar, but Bilbo aging while Gollum doesn't could be due to Bilbo willingly giving up the Ring, while Gollum lost it through theft.
@Ava Regan Gimli is the intimidating one? I'm sorry, but who has ever been intimidated by Gimli? He's the funny one, if anything... and don't get me wrong, I love Gimli, but intimidating? I mean he'd probably be happy about that description :D
the number of times Dylan complained about feet closeups really gives you some insights ya know? 1. Dylan does NOT have a foot fetish. 2. someone in the film crew DEFINITELY does.
There’s significant historical significance to asking Galadriel for her golden hair, and that she said yes was actually huge. Legolas understands the history, which is why he looks so pleased about it.
Also, before photography became widespread (so still pretty much during WWI, in which Tolkien fought), it was common for women to give a lock of hair as a token and remembrance. Something the soldiers could hold in the trenches.

Mt. Ordodruin is the proper name, I believe. I think there was another name for it, but it escapes me. Age and medication really fuck with your memory.
Sam is always getting that appreciation though...it is Frodo actually carying the accursed thing and getting more and more corrupted but still going on that never gets really appreciated by lots of viewers...as Frodo gets more and more unlikeable throguh the ring, he loses the viewers' sympathy...though Frodo is the bravest and most tragic one...
It's so amusing watching this as an extremely avid Tolkien fan. It's almost like being from a obscure country and watching an American react to your culture. 😄
even worse is he makes fun of the wrong parts of it, so he is almost invoking the rage of those who know Lord of the Rings and grew up with it. i wanted to slap him for disrupting the mood when Theoden mourns his son. especially since he downplays his feats by comparing it to aragorn, who is essentially the pinnacle bloodline.
Well, the first movie was published in December 11th of 2001. Almost 20 years ago. Of course you see it "bad", but it was not bad at all. Nowadays movies have worse CGI...
I remember when these first came, out 'every teenage girl' was in love with Legolas, at the movies he would appear on screen and I would hear some women say "oh, he's so sexy"! He was 'everywhere'. It's how he got the role for Pirate's, but then he kind of fizzled out because that's all he is, eye candy 😅
28:18 - The real reason Aragorn screams like that is because in that shot of him kicking the helmet, Viggo Mortensen (the actor who plays Aragorn) actually broke two of his toes, and that take is the one they used in the movie. So, it's actually a scream of pain.
What makes it even better was not just that he broke his toes, but that that was like the 20th take they’d done because the helmet wasn’t flying in the right way.
About Aragorn's age, he comes from a line of half-elves and so he lives longer than most men. His ancestor was Elrond's brother. So technically Arwen was a great great great grand cousin.

This is a fun fact
i like the balrog :( leave my boy alone
Balrog were not exactly greedy, they were Mai corrupted by Melkor (Morgoth) the strongest of the Valar who rebelled against the rest of the gods and Iluvatar, he also corrupted Mairon (Sauron), the strongest Maia and made him his first general.
The wizards that came to middle earth were forbidden from using or displaying there true power.

If Gandalf or Galadriel had it then their magical power would be Godlike (although they would also slowly be corrupted by its power)
The Three Elven Rings still boost the power of Galadriel, Elrond and Gandalf with the powers of preservation, healing and willpower respectively, along with an overall power boost.
Dylan said he just wants it to be used by other people to enhance its powers.

A few fun facts to LOTR:
-Tolkien actually said, that he likes Sam more than Frodo
-Aragorn isn't aging because he's related to the Dúnedain who live three times longer than normal men
-In the books there's not a lot said about Legolas or his backstory.
He IS a Dúnedain. The Blood of Numenor is giving him a long life.

Yes! They make ideal ring bearers bc they don’t thirst for power, as well as them being the lowest on the totem pole of powerful beings.
even gollum after being corrupted never thinks to use its power beyond using it to kill and eat the occasional orc. another interesting thing is while most people are attached to it for the power it gives, the hobbits see it as a precious possession and don’t care about its actual power
Well no the rings power is based on the power of the wearer. And hobbits are the lowest power level species. This is why Gandalf won’t touch it because as he says. It would wield a power to great and terrible to imagine.

@@sigstenbockgard8080 frodo is also a couisin of theirs, just more removed.
I'm just going to clear up some questions for those who are interested:
I thought Aragorn had longer life because he was a Dúnedain. I don't think it had anything to do with being related to elves.
@@psychobratt The Dunedain were men who were given longer life by the Valar to live on the island of Numenor. So yes they weren't ever really any part elvish technically, just elevated genetically by blessing and proximity to the kingdom of the elves. I can't remember though if very very very very distantly Aragorn is a descendant of Elrond who is Half-Elven.
Does it also talk about the origins of Voldemorts' ancestry?
@@ArthurDeaville Elrond is Half-Elven; he and his brother Elros were the children of Two Elf-Human pairs. They were each given the choice to be human or elf. Elrond chose Elf, Elros chose human. Elros vecame the first king of Numenor-the Numenoreans although human were given a gift of long life. Aragorn is like 3,000 years descended from Elros. Elrond's children (Arwen had twin brothers) were also given the choice to be human or elf. Ordinary elves don't get to choose. Yes, Arwen was Aragorn's distant cousin.

@@helena7991 Actually, she had a lot of character.
She was strong, brave, and kind. She conveyed Frodo to safety, and she gave up her immortality for Aragorn.
Even tho in the movie (vs. the books) Arwen basically does nothing for their relationship and yet, they still get married. But I know in the books she's more of a fleshed-out character so..
Yeah, what the other guy said. A human wore it and also turned invisible, so I doubt it's hobbit specific.
It's always sad when we need to say "in the books..." 😭 fricking movie from book adaptation man....
And long life
but Isildur turned invisible too?
@@Glorfindel_117 Ah, thanks for the correction. Very interesting stuff.

Rings was given to all by the Gift Bringer - Sauron himself to control them all
I love how "why not just the eagles" is SUCH a common question Tolkien himself realized they broke his plot so he added info in the books as to why the eagles wouldn't help most of the time.
@@lauraroth6630 In the movie, The Eye CLEARLY sees them and Sauron does nothing.
The movie adds a moment or two of Sauron seeing the hobbits, but apparently he doesn’t realize what it is he is seeing. They’re added for dramatic effect and don’t make too much sense, but I just imagine that he doesn’t realize who they are somehow. Near the end, he senses Frodo putting the ring in Mount Doom and sends the Nazgûl
About the eagles, it wouldn’t make any sense tactically to take the eagles to Mordor with the Ring. Sauron would see the eagles and send all his forces after the eagles. The Nazgûl’s flying fellbeasts would fight the eagles, and/or the army of orcs would shoot them down. Sauron’s forces were more powerful than the forces of good, so they had to be stealthy about it.
@@jedimercenary609 the eye sees Frodo at Mt. Doom without him putting the ring on
@@vinnicinhus44 I remember that from the film.
Sauron’s forces were too powerful to fight directly.

fucking battle of the fans
There’s a lot of stuff they don’t have time to explicitly explain, but it’s still in the movies if you read the books. Here’s a few examples:
The other rings DO actually do stuff, but like…..most of the races that have one of the rings of power kinda…agreed not to use them anymore since they found out that the one ring actually has the power to highjack and corrupt all the other ones if Sauron wields it.
Although, like….if Arwen was gonna end up with any mortal dude, at least Aragorn lived quite a bit longer than most
Aragorn died at age 212. Arwen travelled to Lorien and died one year later.
thanks for these facts :)
I think the significance of the friendship between Legolas and Gimli is another element that is more fleshed out in the books but is still shown in the films.

He is literally the hero of the story
@@thelizardking699 but when he's resurrected doesn't he have that restriction lifted?
@@sketchydeer5044 no because when the wizards went to Middle-Earth they were not allowed to match strength with Sauron. Their sole purpose was to guide and aid them not to be their leaders.
Even in HP it's not always controllable..
also, elven magic is closer to art than actual magic in the books. their creations (clothes, weaponry, songs) are superior because their understanding of art, nature and the world itself is on a completely different level. elves are more like artists or 'scientists' in some cases than mages
But when sauron was defeated thousands of years ago, the elves put on the rings again, so that they can continue to use magic.
wooow, I didn't know that, awesome!
And cuz we'd not have much of a movie if they did it like that.
I was looking for that comment. Thank you 🙏 for explain the plot in few sentences.
His incorrect knowledge of the lore and the plan that followed might have worked though. Lol. Sauron would have seen and stopped the Eagles, but millions of giant ants with one peacing his life into a volcano with the ring might work. Legolas: A diversion.
@Imrane Bouzian "Incorrect knowledge of the lore."

Dylan: "they're so clearly green screened"
Fun fact; none of the stars were there all together for the ending shot; so the way they did that is actually pretty cool! They all shot individually xD
Yeah that really annoyed me. Never seen anyone watch it with so little care.
Lol Dylan being surprised they listed the fanclub members but all I hear is "Shoutout to our Patreons who will be listed at the end"
One of the small details i love about these movies is how Frodos neck becomes more and more scarred the longer he has the ring, at the end his entire neck is completely corrupted and scarred by it. Recently rewatched these movies and damn they're so good
'The Ring was more of a hinderance than a help'
The Ring is literally part of Sauron himself, why the hell would it help the people dead set on destroying it? Throughout the three films it tries it's very damndest to betray the Fellowship from corrupting Boromir (temporarily), to attracting the Nazgûl (Ringwraiths) whenever it can, to corrupting Frodo at the very end.
The entire point of the Ring is its ability to corrupt those around it, it couldn't help even if it was inclined to.
"The ring was more of hindrance than a help." And that IS the power of the ring.
Which is exactly why it had to be destroyed
I feel like Dylan is the kind of person who pisses on Batman because Batman has no superpowers compared to Superman.
@@cathsaigh2197 Does sound plausible.
The fact that he watched about 10 hours of LOTR and THEN had to sit through it AGAIN to edit it all says everything. Loved it ❤️

the number of times Dylan complained about feet closeups really gives you some insights ya know?
1. Dylan does NOT have a foot fetish.
2. someone in the film crew DEFINITELY does.
😂😂 either 2 is true or they wanted to get their money's worth having made synthetic hobbit feet
The Hobbits kept track of every day they spent an hour getting the feet fitted but never shot below the knee. It ended up being about 60% of the time.

also I'd like to mention that in the lotr the feet weren't even that bad compared to the feet in the hobbit (shudder)
@@DaviniaHill yeah. I reckon it was worth it though...they inform their physicality/movement so much. Acting wise they surely helped a lot.
I spit out my water 🤣.

Dylan: Sam is one of the best characters
Me: finally someone gives Sam the respect he deserves
He always did if you're a true lotr movie watcher
Sam is always getting that appreciation though...it is Frodo actually carying the accursed thing and getting more and more corrupted but still going on that never gets really appreciated by lots of viewers...as Frodo gets more and more unlikeable throguh the ring, he loses the viewers' sympathy...though Frodo is the bravest and most tragic one...

Literally everyone gives Sam the respect he deserves.
Who disrespects Sam? He may not be as famous as Gandalf or Legolas or Gollum but he has a huge fanbase.
"Legolas looking for his personality" killed me!
Dylan accurately predicting a good chunk of the films but saying "what's the trap?" while they're surrounded by spider webs at 57:19 is why I'm here.
It's so amusing watching this as an extremely avid Tolkien fan. It's almost like being from a obscure country and watching an American react to your culture. 😄
omg lol i felt that XD
False, he didn’t decide that he was the first to discover it and thus owns it now.
even worse is he makes fun of the wrong parts of it, so he is almost invoking the rage of those who know Lord of the Rings and grew up with it.
i wanted to slap him for disrupting the mood when Theoden mourns his son. especially since he downplays his feats by comparing it to aragorn, who is essentially the pinnacle bloodline.
I’m not sure which I enjoy more, when he completely doesn’t get it or when he exactly gets it! 😂
I've rewatched this so many times now, and this is too accurate
"the CG is so bad"
Blasphemy
I mean, if he were talking about the hobbit crap movies, then sure... Haha
It is bad, but at the time it was incredible
he should watch VFX Artist react to Lord of the Rings . By the corridor Crew, so he will understand how this movie has amazing effects!!
Well, the first movie was published in December 11th of 2001. Almost 20 years ago. Of course you see it "bad", but it was not bad at all. Nowadays movies have worse CGI...
@@freakpandor It does hold up even now
Aragorn is the lead, Gimli is the comic relief, and Legolas is the eye candy, obviously
Always loved Aragon way more than Legolas, i like 'em roguish lol
I remember when these first came, out 'every teenage girl' was in love with Legolas, at the movies he would appear on screen and I would hear some women say "oh, he's so sexy"! He was 'everywhere'. It's how he got the role for Pirate's, but then he kind of fizzled out because that's all he is, eye candy 😅

Aragorn is 100% the eye candy for me, he was always my favorite character. Faramir was also another cutie too.
@@Shippo28Fr, my man Faramir is so underrated
28:18 - The real reason Aragorn screams like that is because in that shot of him kicking the helmet, Viggo Mortensen (the actor who plays Aragorn) actually broke two of his toes, and that take is the one they used in the movie. So, it's actually a scream of pain.
@@hihiglug I did the thing. 👍👍
