Something that I noticed while watching and hearing mauler mention Boromir's role as a protector, is that in the final battle Boromir doesn't have his SHIELD. A tool only used for protecting. He left his shield behind (that's how Aragorn noticed that Boromir is missing) to go after Frodo. Symbolically abandoning his role as a protector to chase after the ring. In the final battle he only uses his sword(still to protect the halflings) but if he still had his shield, he might've been able to survive Lurtz's arrows(maybe). This is just another tragic and excellent twist and detail for Boromir's character. God I love these movies!
To add to this, he grabs Scotty Pippin and puts them behind himself, literally using his body to shield them. The symbolism is amazing, the deeper you dig the more there is.
I think the only reason I would say that the shield in this case wouldn't have saved him is because each time he was shot, he was either not aware (the first shot) or was already focused on a closer threat in his defense of mary and took. I would still say that while he had only a role in the first movie (barring flashbacks) he still has one of the greatest redemption arcs I can think of, I still tear up when I see it, which boggles my mind since I rarely even tear up at funerals. Idk man something about it just resonates.
This also shuts down the "boromir never uses his shield" argument cuz he clearly uses it in moria and you clearly see he doesn't have it when the battle of Amon hen starts
The scene of Frodo putting his hand on Bilbo’s shoulder after the jump scare is so good. It embodies forgiveness and empathy. It’s more powerful than any words that Frodo could have said to Bilbo in that moment.
it’s the start of Frodo beginning to really understand the effects of the Ring over time. It sets up his relationship with Gollum in the Two Towers where he has a hard time accepting that the little weirdo is beyond help, because that means that he and Bilbo might also be beyond help…
The fact that there are two of them and they are basically both trying to convince the mountain to do what they want is the ultimate neighbors fighting over a fence situation.
I feel like not enough people talk about Boromir's line, "Give them a moment for pity's sake," in the wake of Gandalf's death as proof for him not being a villain.

Man that ending makes me tear up without fail. Even you guys talking during it cant detract from the impact these scenes have. Which is just testament to what a masterpiece these movies are
One of the things I miss from the old movies was the use of sounds, color and voice of different factions. Like you guys said about Rohan, the Shire, Gondor, Mordor, they're all different and the sounds are different with them. The Shire had soft warm music, soft and warm tones, soft and warm characters. Rohan had dull green and red colors that became warmer by the third movie. Isengard was dark, cold and metallic. The consistency between the different senses actually feels good to experience. When we see the Marvels for example, we have 3 different personalities with colors that don't match what they do or who they are and the music separates itself from what's going on. In comparison of another Marvel movie, Ironman one had sharp colors and tones when it needed it, warm/cold colors when it was needed, and rock music became more active every time Tony Stark accomplished something. Even if we're not talking about writing, it's really nice to experience a movie through other ways visually or audibly
Yeah Peter Jackson knocked it out of the park with this endeavor. The fact that he filmed all three films in one go and had the right crew and actors and production companies backing his vision is amazing and why people still love it to this day. Epic trilogy.
Believe it or not, this perfect timing. I just watched the extended cut to all three movies with my Dad both for the first time. He saw all the movies opening night and he got to tell me what was and wasn't different
The thing is, when this movie aired, we lived in this strange world where two people could have a difference of opinion without either being accused of being a "hater". The term didn't exist. I watched it with a few friends and one of my best friends was a book purist and said they ruined it by making changes, whereas I thought for the most part the changes were good or necessary as film and books are different mediums. I'd read the books maybe 20 times since 1977 when I first read it, so it wasn't that I didn't understand his point. After I got the Extended Edition on DVD we watched through a few times and argued every time, and it didn't make us enemies in the slightest.
Actually, the sequence with Tom Bombadil plays a very important part- It lets us, the reader, know that the One Ring has LIMITS, it is not 'All Powerful', there are other forces and powers to which it is helpless to affect. As we are pounded more & more later on in the story about how overwhelming the Ring is, that knowledge is a bit of comfort. Tolkien has other brief reminders like that- The Cock Crowing before Rohan arrives, the Phial of Galadriel reminding us of the Stars above Middle-Earth, these all help to mitigate the despair & darkness one might feel.
I think Jackson made the right choice. He wanted to show the inherent danger of the ring and having Bombabil around would have somewhat undermined that.
At 00:53:30 I believe that Nazgûl was sneaking around Aragorn as he was fighting his comrades to grab the ring. Only to stop when the only other Nazgûl flees instead of fighting.
Go Team Boromir. Very few talk about what a masterful performance this was from Sean Bean. He really brings everything to the table here, displaying pride, strength, dignity, but also tenderness, vulnerability, self doubt and shame. All with subtlety, never over the top. He also did that with Ned Stark, and even then, even after reading the books, watching him die was literally painful. Such a great actor.
21:36 absolutely love the detail that Gandalf refuses to touch the ring, even to pick it up and move it. Even though he doesn’t 100% know it’s the 1 ring he is still very respectful of it and careful to not be corrupted
The 🍉 scene, after watching the extended, turns from a simple riddle moment to something else. Gandalf is stalling intentionally here because if he stalls long enough, they will reconsider and avoid Moria afterall. Frodo is a Baggins though. Like Bilbo, he's too good at riddles, so Gandalf had to give in and open the doorway.
The funny thing about Tom Bombadil is that Tolkien just refused to explain what he was. Dozens of people sent Tolkien letters asking him to explain Tom, and he simply refused to do so. And given the extreme level of detail that he goes into for everything else, I think it’s pretty obvious that Tom was just meant to be what he is. An oddity. Unexplainable. A hint that even with everything Tolkien tells us, this world still has so much we’ll never know.
This is the best EFAP video. I enjoy the critique episodes, but hearing you all gush over something I enjoy is wonderful. More appreciation of masterpieces, please!
I was 12, 1977, when I watched Star Wars IV. I remember I was absolutely blown away. I was 36 when I watched The Fellowship, and I had the same feeling as when I was 12 and watched Star Wars IV.
Finally saw these in theaters for the anniversary, as brilliant as ever. Thought the integration of chat for the re-upload was a neat detail. Thanks for all the work getting these out lads! 😊
My first major purchase in life was dropping $3000 on a 50" hdtv & 5.1 dolby surround sound just to try to recreate the Balrog experience at home. One of the most memorable cinematic moments of my life. They had someone who wrote the code for CG fire, during the making of Fellowship, in Maya (program ). (I know this because I was training to be a computer animator in post secondary using Maya at the time). Their technical achievements aren't given enough praise or credit. #GreatestTrilogyEver
The Nazgul... very terrifying. Tolkien only ever gave an identity to two of them: The Witch-King of Angmar, and Khamul the Easterling. Very little explored about what they were beyond that they were once great kings of Men, but I think that enhances their horror effect. It's like "Whatever they were before, that doesn't matter. All that's left of them is these evil shades, thralls of Sauron... no trace of their past or former identities, they don't even have their own bodies or wills. This is what succumbing to darkness and evil does to us. This is why we have to get Frodo to Rivendell as fast as possible. This is why the only thing we can do with the One Ring is destroy it." It's really brilliant.
I love the whole "There is hope left" both from Gandalf talking to Elrond and Bormoir talking to Aragorn.....Aragorn's name when he lived in Rivendell is Estel.....the elven word for Hope
"It's like _calm down, film - I can only coom so many times in a row."_ I've always found it hilarious how Mauler will deal with films as if he's dealing with a person. he'll talk to the film sometimes when he's got an issue with it, good or bad. that's a funny.
I love you guys but you should have mentioned my favorite scene in lotr. when the room goes dark ,gets smaller and Gandalf gets huge in the span of 3 seconds, demonstrating the unimaginable power held by Gandalf and the overwhelming care he has for bilbo . The first time I saw that, it floored me, and it still does today. What a perfect scene.
If there is one moment I will give the Hobbit movies its the scene with Galadriel and Gandalf talking, it actually manages to be a good, poignant moment
24:50 That shot is absolutely stunning. I LOVE the way Minis Tirith is illuminated by those sunbeams as if it’s some kind of divine light serving as a beacon of hope for the world, sitting on a fertile plain surrounded by mountains. But then in the background Mordor looks like Hell itself, with it’s black skies and the fiery eruption telling us that there’s something REALLY BAD happening over there, and the spreading dark clouds foreshadowing that it’s evil is growing stronger and beginning to spread.
I have watched The Trilogy more times than I can remember at this point, but the Fellowship of the Ring will always be my favourite movie of the three. I really enjoy the slow start and introduction to the world as well as the characters, despite it's comparatively smaller scale it's just as epic as the two other movies. Not to mention Boromir, who's my personal favorite character of the trilogy and potentially one of the greatest fictional characters, not only when it comes to the Lord of the Rings but in general. Despite a shorter screen time, compared to other main characters, he brings so much nuance and depth that it's a pleasure to watch his journey every single time, even if I know it by heart.
Never seen the vocal duel between Gandalf and Saruman with subtitles before and damn, so epic! Just two old men with naught but their booming voices trying to convince the mountain itself to act one way or another. So fucking metal.
Those tree reviews of LOTR films alongside with praise of Jurassic Park and Arcane maybe amongst the best episodes of EFAP - certainly they are my personal favorite. It's funny to see EFAP crew making fun of bad media but it's heartwarming to see them analyzing something good - it bring you to the times when western studios were capable of producing great films that could stand test of times. Not so much those days... then it's even more important to remember those good movies. So, thank you for those LOTR reviews even if I found some of your opinion about Tolkien's book to be controversial.
It’s so weird to remember when these came out. I was like, they were great, sure, but the sweet summer child that I was expected that I would see more movies in the future as good or maybe even better. Little did I know that no, this was it. This is actually the best (3) movie(s) that will ever be made, or at least very likely so, given the current state of affairs.
Thanks guys. I was lucky enough to see this between the ages of 15 and 17, and I knew I'd seen something incredibly special. Listening to you guys talk about it is makin me fall in love with it all over again. Time to dust off the DVDs. Maybe I'll read the Hobbit to my pregnant wife.
I remember sitting in the theater at the end of this movie being really mad because there were so many things left unresolved 😅 but once I found out there were 2 more coming it made me feel a little better lol
I remember I really didn't want to see this when it came out. I was in middle school and I had no idea what Lord of the Rings was and had no interest in some fantasy with elves and fairies. But my mom dragged me to it and it turned out to be the greatest film I ever saw.
I am unashamedly basking in both the artistry of the trilogy and the unique sharp wit of our fucking panel. This trilogy makes me hope for humankind, honestly. This trilogy deserves all the words.
My commendations to Howard Shore and the orchestra. I adore the entire score, of course, but I nearly break into tears whenever I hear "Concerning Hobbits" (the Shire theme)

Actually, the sequence with Tom Bombadil plays a very important part-
It lets us, the reader, know that the One Ring has LIMITS, it is not 'All Powerful', there are other forces and powers to which it is helpless to affect.
I appreciate the Frodo fall-counter segment.
I want the technology of erasing memories just to watch these movies for the first time again.
1:37:22 - Mauler showing his noobness thinking the Goblin King is Ian McShane rather than Barry Humphries
Damn, now I wish we had Ian McShane as the goblin king. lol
Yeah as an Aussie I was annoyed about that and no one corrected him. IMDB or just watching the credits will sort this out. But it is what it is.
Sure, I’ll watch this whole EFAP again.
1:37:41 As a young teenager who had just experienced September 11th, this exchange hit particularly hard in theaters.
There’s a part of me that always hopes for a different outcome for Boromir every time I watch this, even though I know it’s impossible.
Don't forgot that Gimli wants Frodo dead
The chat integration was worth it, MauLer. Thank you for your effort.
The King is back, baby.
Welcome back, Dishonoured Wolf.
So i think this is my 3rd time watching this. Never gets old.
This is the best EFAP video.
I enjoy the critique episodes, but hearing you all gush over something I enjoy is wonderful. More appreciation of masterpieces, please!
I am going to watch these all over again! peak fiction is worth watching many times in different ways!
This trilogy is an example of timeless art. Great acting. direction, cinematography, etc. Everyone involved in these films should be proud.
Thank you for immortalizing my demand for more Gollum gameplay footage (2:01)
I love the whole "There is hope left" both from Gandalf talking to Elrond and Bormoir talking to Aragorn.....Aragorn's name when he lived in Rivendell is Estel.....the elven word for Hope
Let us consume this glorious EFAP once more!
"It's like _calm down, film - I can only coom so many times in a row."_
I've always found it hilarious how Mauler will deal with films as if he's dealing with a person. he'll talk to the film sometimes when he's got an issue with it, good or bad. that's a funny.
I was six when my mom read me the books. Boromir was my guy. How I cried when he died.
There's another layer of sadness watching this after Bernard Hill's passing. An absolute legend.
Yeah he nailed that role. It was a good casting choice.
@@bewmdogg To be honest, I can't thin k of any bad or inappropriate casting the the entire trilogy.
Every Frame a Praise
MauLer summarizes themes better and with more passion than anyone I’ve ever heard. His whole speech about Boromir is perfect.
This was great! Thanks guys. It was fun hanging out with the movie.
Amazing job EFAP wow collective knowledge and love of this film from the lineup is moving ty guys.
2:34:00 I've seen this scene a dozen times at least, and it still chokes me up. Sean Bean is a fucking treasure and this is a masterclass.
It's incredible how you could basically pick any character as your favorite and you wouldn't be wrong
“I know what I have to do, but I don’t know if I have the strength to do it”- Kylbo Renggins
Is it weird that I keep pausing the video to add to the discussion? 😅
I also do it all the time :'D
I just watched the 8hr version again, how dare you make me watch this in parts!! Again! The boss can't handle the Longman I see
Don bless, you beautiful bastards did it! Hopefully you can get paid for the double work !!
I watched and loved the 8 hour stream, a shame it can't be monitized, giving this a like and a comment to help.
Getting emotional during the boromoir scene when somewhat passively listening to the Efap watch….
My favorite group of Mad Chad Lads discussing arguably the best trilogy ever.
Oo Mauler didn't know that the goblin king in the Hobbit was voiced by Barry Humphries. But it did sound like Ian Mcshane to be fair
Hell yeah! Just finished Troy. I was wondering when the next movie would come out. Looks like it’s just about time to go for a long walk.
I recommend putting on auto captions when Bilbo reunites with Frodo in Rivendale he says “My damn boy” instead of dear boy
On an unrelated note, I want to always dress up and look like Gandalf the Grey when (and if) I become a grandpa.
I get off work 30 minutes before the stream starts. Thankfully the metal shop I work at is only 2.5 minutes away from my house. I missed the OG release, so I'm fine with you having to re-release it. I like to be included in things.
Everyone needs a Sam in their life. Likewise, everyone should aspire to be a Sam in someone else's.
I can't place why, but I love the introduction of the Mumakil on the Pelennor Fields.
