At about 1:07 he speaks about a 'white cursor', (which I didn't exactly see, and on my screen at that point it's a '+' cursor) as a selector for the area of the screen to CLIP, and he puts it AT A POINT ON THE SCREEN somewhat down from the top and over to the right, and then drags it further down & to the right to make a rectangle. He's CROPPING a section of the displayed screen with that rectangle as he is selecting that section to be clipped. Is that clear?

I used this tool for some years very happily without realising it was a Microsoft tool. Somehow it vanished when I upgraded to Windows 11 and the new version I didn't like instinctively. wasn't as instantaneously obvious what to do to get the straightforward result I had as the default (I guess) setting in the previous version which was immediately going into drawing the rectangle - and then when releasing the mouse key showing exactly what I'd cut. Watching your video here gave me the hint I needed to reopen the new tool and get almost the same result - it's not what I am used to and, being a creature of habit, I'm not delighted, (like I am not happy with some of the changes MS have made to Outlook in 'improving it'...) but assuming that I can't download the previous version (I've Googled without success) then I can at least use the new version and hope that I don't have to reset it each time, though it seems that I do... :-( I just want to have one click on the icon in the tool bar and then click and drag the rectangle. Not select the drop down menu and click on 'rectangle' then do the job I'd already have done in the old version.. !😮💨 If anyone knows how I can install the old version, please let me know!

Thank you! That's a nice explanation! Do you know how I might snip a LARGER than screen presented picture? That is, a snip of a picture that is TALLER than what shows on the screen initially? I can SCROLL the picture on the screen, EXCEPT when I'm in the snip tool. So I can't move the bottom of the snip window to the bottom of the picture like I can otherwise.
Another way is to click the button next to the time display, and click "screen snip." It will automatically go to the snipping screen and you can drag your mouse when you have the rectangular snip to take a screenshot. If the option screen snip isn't there on the menu bar thing, right click on the background and press edit, and add the option screen snip to the "quick actions" bar (that's what it's really called).
I used to take snips all the time from videos using this method. It isn't working for me anymore. As soon as I click on the snipping tool, the video disappears. I can do it with the windows shortcut, but then I can't find the snip. There are no options given to save it, and it doesn't seem to be saving to a clipboard. Any suggestions? Hi Nancy, Try clicking the Save icon in the snip menu. That way you still have it on your computer. From there, you can attach it to an email if you want to send it. I hope this helps.
help! this all works but when i screenshot the entire screen goes alot whiter and its hard to see good details when trying to capture an image, its like im on normal 100 percent brightness then when i go to use snip then its like it went to 175% brightness and its making me mad

Adam, after watching your vid 4 times I think I have it. If you slowed down and did not assume that I can listen and view simultaneously then it would be better for me. My win 10 has always had a built-in "snip & sketch tool, easily found in my start menu. I've never heard of 'snipping tool'. With my snip & sketch, i'd open it, click NEW and then simply crop out the portion of the page i wanted to save and et voila! Now for some unknown reason, snip & sketch is suddenly not working and reseting it does not help nor do the other offered tips i find online. it's just broken. In the microsoft app store - it's not even listed, so if i uninstalled it, i couldn't get it back. In the store i see your "snipping tool' - i do not want that one - it's complicated and has features i'll Never use. Anyone here know how to get the very simple and straighforward Snip & Sketch app to work again?
Doesn’t work for me when I used the snip that thing didn’t pop up leaving the snip tool useless when I’m trying to save something that has no other way to save :(
