Just a quick note on your last point sometimes not updating immediately is the smartest thing you can do. Some updates or patches can break another. The other reason to possibly hold off is there might be a undiscovered problem that might require another patch to fix why update to a vulnerable patch when the one you currently has is just fine? I wait until I’m fiorced to update once my computer or phone start going too slow or buggy then I know it’s update time sometimes Apple will purposely force you to update when you don’t want to but you’ll eventually have to do it anyways.
With Windows 7 I actually took the time to look up details on each individual update package before installing it, and then I would allow only one package to install at a time so that I could easily verify which, if any, update screwed things up and roll it back. The unfortunate downside to this was that installing updates 1 at a time instead of say 10 at a time slowed down the "check for updates" process such that it started taking several hours just to determine which updates were available. for the passwords one, I would also recommend creating an empty account that you'll use just for sites or softwares which you dont fully trust giving the password to
I actually feel pretty good - I"m doing almost all of these :). But it's a great video to address keeping your system clean and running at peak performance. Especially things like cleaning up the starting processes. I didn't know about the shut down 'fast start' thing either, so, great tips!
For the first tip, you can actually temporarily turn off Fast Startup by holding down the left SHIFT key and then selecting the shutdown option in the start menu. It's nice for those who do not have the UAC privileges necessary to turn Fast Startup off completely. Hope this helps someone!
My sister is around 12 and whenever I visit my parents there is always something wrong with her PC. After fixing the problem I always sit back in horror at the state of her desktop. Files all over the place. In my humble opinion. The desk top is for short cuts only. Organise your PCs people.
I dont even use it for that. Whenever I am working on a project I just save everything to desktop for quick access and then move them for long term storage and delete what I dont want.
Once you have an SSD as the boot drive, I recommend disabling fast startup. The difference in boot times is just a few seconds and it saves the the potential problems fast startup causes. Once you shut down, you know you will start up fresh when next you are ready to use the computer. Also eliminates problems that comes from Windows locking the drive on shutdown.
@@samuelsepfarman Here's how: 1. Go to Settings > System > Power & Sleep. 2. On the right side, click "Additional power settings". 3. On the left side, click "Choose what the power buttons do". 4. Scroll down to "Shutdown settings". 5. Uncheck "Turn on fast startup". 6. At the bottom, click the "Save changes" button.
I remember helping one of my Mom's friends with her laptop, and I showed her that you can drag and drop files on the desktop, to the recycle bin, etc. She had no idea you could do that. :-D
My husband didn't know about cut and paste. He was writing down web addresses and then retyping them in. I discovered this when we first started dating. I showed him how to cut and paste and he said later that's when he knew he wanted to marry me. LOL
I showed my Dad how to shift-click songs in iTunes to delete them or whatever. And I don't think either of my parents remembers you can ctrl-click things to this day..
Regarding your last point: I was relaxing on a weekend away, but had my laptop with me for an online event. Unfortunately, Windows decided to update the moment I booted it up, offering me no chance to delay that update. Fortunately, I booted in time for the 2.5 hour update procedure to finish, just in time for me to get into the online event, but it would be much more helpful if Windows told us how large an update is and how long it takes to install. I've already had updates fail for lack of space (why didn't the system check if there was sufficient space first?)
How (at least in my experience) Windows schedules its updates is during inactive times (like 2:00 am), then it will prompt you for an update and after a few unaccepted prompts it will just update. As for why didn't Windows check if there was enough space, There are multiple factors that would make this difficult. The size of the drive Windows is stored in, the other files in that drive. I'm not saying that it'd be impossible, but not really worth it due to the fact not many people would have use to know how large an update is
@@JR-ef3by It's a joke. People use the phrase 'linux distros' as poorly disguised code for pirated stuff, as saying pirated stuff can get you in crap on some forums.
Thanks for the wisdom! -- I'd like to add a tip about the startup list - when you start a new computer for the first time (hopefully without having installed the bloatware) look at the list and write it down so that later on you'll know which startup processes were and were not there originally.
Hey Joe, for some issues it would be nice if you focus a bit more on the actual solution in stead of the issue. For example: 1) How or where do I enable/disable Fast Start-up? 3) How do I add common [keyboard] shortcuts to an app or a file? (I know the answer, but would be nice if *you* mentioned it) 5) I would suggest to check the settings of the specific app first. You can also use the Windows Settings, instead of Task Manager.
on the "5th" one i think you meant third, for some reason most people get bugs in the settings like the startup apps tab not showing in settings which happened to me and in task manager it just wouldn't show any apps that i know they are running in startup
Oh i never make backups, i never really save anything on the pc, once every so often i just reinstall windows when i get a new ssd anyways and just start from scratch again. Only my important files are in the cloud.
working on it now, i update my back ups every six months. in the middle of doing that right now, actually. got a bigger external just for my media files.
Every person on Earth belongs to one of these groups: 1) Regularly backing up their data. 2) Haven't lost their data. Yet I moved to the first group about a year ago. Good thing, I accidentally had copy of most of my school an programming files on my flash drive.
Got stuck on the POST screen after an update for a while ago. Had to rollback, only to discover this was an unfixed issue from a preview build. I update once my computer auto pushes, which is usually long enough that any issues will have been ironed out.
1:50 I think it's a better idea to turn the fast startup off anyway. 1. It reduces a complication if you dual boot 2. It prolongs the SSD life by reducing writes
@@sbeveuwu no, he is right. most distros recommend disabling fast startup if you plan on dual booting linux and windows 10 because some partitions or devices may get blocked while on linux
His, list is basically an IT intro to a computer. One of the big ones he missed is to create a user account for daily use and an Admin account to reduce hidden program installation
This is a lot of valuable information. Thank you. I had no idea about the start up menu options. A lot of items in the startup I never use. Again, Thank you.
2:10 Ever since I unintentionally installed a program that might have been a virus, I always use Custom install to make sure I know what files are going on my computer. Similarly, I always make my browser ask me where I want to store a downloaded file, just so I can stop anything from downloading automatically. 9:35 Viewing file extensions has helped me a lot, when I'm trying to install an old computer game and Windows acts like it can't install. I can open the disk folder, locate the .exe files, and install the game!
Better off hitting Windows key and typing Advanced Startup Options. Choose Troubleshoot. Then Advanced Options. Then either UEFI Startup Settings to boot right into EFI BIOS or Startup Settings if you just want to get to the boot menu. Works every time.

For the first tip, you can actually temporarily turn off Fast Startup by holding down the left SHIFT key and then selecting the shutdown option in the start menu. It's nice for those who do not have the UAC privileges necessary to turn Fast Startup off completely.

How to do it?
Agreed, and i had to do this recently as my dual boot wasn’t working and this was the cause of it.
@@samuelsepfarman Here's how:

Good refresher courses plus some stuff I hadn't thought about. Thx

For example:
1) How or where do I enable/disable Fast Start-up?
3) How do I add common [keyboard] shortcuts to an app or a file? (I know the answer, but would be nice if *you* mentioned it)
5) I would suggest to check the settings of the specific app first. You can also use the Windows Settings, instead of Task Manager.
on the "5th" one i think you meant third, for some reason most people get bugs in the settings like the startup apps tab not showing in settings which happened to me and in task manager it just wouldn't show any apps that i know they are running in startup
What you said is perfect, I totally agree. I'm looking to learn as I'm not tech savvy as some others. But happy for them.😊

Updates sometimes cause some problems and they need to be worked on and modified by Microsoft. So this is the reason why some peope delay the updates.
Got stuck on the POST screen after an update for a while ago. Had to rollback, only to discover this was an unfixed issue from a preview build.

Shift+Shutdown also disables fast startup. That's useful if you need to tap a function key to get to the boot menu or BIOS
