    Skyfall was released on the 50th Anniversary of the Bond movies (Dr. No was released in 1963) and what I love about it is that it has just the right amount of fanservice, including legacy characters like Q and Moneypenny, slowly bringing in Bond gadgets plus the kitted out Astin Martin from Goldfinger, cute references like Bond saying "For her eyes only" referencing the movie "For Your Eyes Only" and so much more. It was definitely a Bond movie for the long time Bond fans.

    There is a really telling line in "Goldeneye", Judi Dench's first 007 movie as M. She tells James "If you think for one moment I don't have the balls to send a man out to die, your instincts are dead wrong. I have no compunction about sending you to your death, but I won't do it on a whim, even with your cavalier attitude towards life."

    • @Fonny222
      @Fonny222 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      What I loved about that scene was there was a kind of “is the James Bond character a relic of the 50’s and 60’s?” question around the time Goldeneye was being made. So they used their introduction of Judi Dench as the new M to call it out directly to the face of James Bond.

    • @CrazeeAdam
      @CrazeeAdam ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Kind of makes you wonder if James Bond...as a character, is simply an alias of course that is replaced when a Bond is either killed or retires peacefully somewhere. For Daniel Craig's "James Bond" and Silva, M for sure holds true on her statement that she isn't afraid to put her agents in harms way, it's what they signed up for, but it doesn't mean that she doesn't care about them, same with Pierce Brosnman's Bond where she first started. They may get on her every last nerve, but you can tell she does really care about them as humans still

    The interactions between M, Bond, Q, and Moneypenny… it’s changed a lot over the years but there’s something about this particular cast that makes it work so well. Between Moneypenny’s flirting and Q’s intellectual one-upping, they almost feel like three college flatmates keeping each other on their toes.
    And as a send off to Dame Judi Dench’s M, this could not have hit harder. Remember, IRL, a lot of people were against Craig as James Bond before Casino Royale came out. Judi Dench went on record and said “his critics will be proven wrong.” To have M’s last words be “I knew I got something right,” just too perfect.

    You may not have caught it if you haven't watched a lot of the classic Bond films, but Miss Moneypenny was a main recurring character in the series. Always portrayed as M's secretary, there was always a playful flirting between Bond and Moneypenny but both knew they could never actually have the other. Moneypenny often played the part like 'Always the Bridesmaid, never the Bride' against Connery and Moore's Bond.

    Highest-grossing Bond film of all time.
    Released during the 50th Anniversary.
    Bond remembering his tragic past, rebuilding his body & soul, recharging his character to be the best there is.
    Judi Dench as the only female 'M'.
    Playing the role within 17 years and 2 eras (tied with the late Bernard Lee).
    Saw this in IMAX and i was blown away.
    Bardem as the villain, Introducing Q & Moneypenny finally, getting a new M and the theme by Adele.

    Skyfall commemorated James Bond's 50th anniversary. For those who have watched all the older Bond movies, there were so many callbacks. Judi Dench has been M since Pierce Brosan's time. It was so heartbreaking to see her character die. In the old movies, Moneypenny was M's assistant, there was always some sort of flirting when Bond came back to headquarters. I know that the story has a few moments that can make you cringe and that some of the actors weren’t the best choice for the film but in spite of all that, I love the action sequences, the CGI is impressive for the 90s, and in terms of trying to modernize the idea of Godzilla, I think the filmmakers had a unique idea in writing a new origin story for not just him but also all the other creatures he would go on to fight. Plus in spite of all the bad things that film may have had, it launched a pretty cool animated series!

    As for Bond comments: yeah, my big thing was the lack of empathy for the Bond girl. That really took me out of it for a while. Outside of that I totally agree that it was a pretty stellar outing in the Craig run

    The symbolism in this movie is amazing! Here are just a few I caught on a second watching:
    When Bond and Patrice are fighting over the sniper rifle, the background lights depict jellyfish. Jellyfish have no brains and only the barest definition of a nervous system. This speaks to Bond's and Patrice's roles as hired guns, meant only to obey orders rather than to think for themselves.
    Q's and Bond's reactions to the painting in the museum symbolize the new generation's and the old guard's respective stances on the changing nature of the intelligence agency. Q sees the shift towards cyber tech in intelligence work as "inevitable" with a smile and a shrug, whereas Bond just gets on with it and does his duty: just a bloody big ship.
    Not to mention the callbacks to other Bond films: For Her Eyes Only, Oddjob-looking thug in Shanghai, etc.

    Fun Fact: The scene where Bond and that dude are fighting in the dragon-lizard pit, Daniel Craig was wearing gloves during the scene. They realised afterwards that it wouldn't make sense to the story since his gun requires his hand print to use. Therefore they CG-d his hands throughout the entire sequence. You can notice his hands look slightly puffier than normal

    The scene with M in front of the council, I always thought she took too long speaking on purpose to show how vulnerable they really are when Javier busts in! Just like you said Holden, “Well they’re getting the funding now!” Just my theory 😊

I loved it...mostly (I think) because the low-key comedy plus over the top comedy just hit my funny bone.....oh I forgot to name the film... Joe Versus the Volcano (1990). You guys may hate it, but ....

    The first book and movie of Bond was Doctor No, where they established the characters of M (Mallory ) Q .. For Quarter master, also named Algernon, and Moneypenney as the secretary that flirts with Bond. The actor who played M passed away sometime into the Roger Moore Bond films. Moneypenney lasted far longer before they recast her (Samantha Bond actually played Moneypenney when they brought in Judy Dench). They decided to go full circle with Ralph Dennis as M as Judy Bench unfortunately was losing her eyes

    _Skyfall_ might be my second favourite Daniel Craig-era Bond film, and it is the only one I've seen in theatres. It was just... amazing. The re-introducing of Moneypenny and Judi Dench's performance as M was a wonderful swansong for her. And I love the continued roasting of Daniel Craig's last name, haha.

    This is my absolute favourite Bond film, partly because it was the first one that I saw in cinemas, but also because it's just a fantastic film in general. Silva is one of the greatest Bond villains, a great parallel for Bond in this film, equal parts frightening, funny and tragic, and played perfectly by Javier Bardem. In general everyone gives a fantastic performance, especially Judi Dench as M. The action is fantastically staged, Roger Deakins' cinematography is absolutely top-notch, the score is absolutely wonderful and Adele's theme song is one of the best in the series' history

  • @MarkDemeo
    @MarkDemeo ปีที่แล้ว

    Since you didn't start from the beginning of the Bond series, you probably don't get the significance of some of the moments in this. Bond's original boss M was a man played by Bernard Lee. When he died the character was retired in universe. Judi Dench started with the Pierce Brosnon pictures. Miss Moneypenny was the long time reccuring character and M's secretary. As far as these movies it's the first time seeing Q,the joke about the pen is a reference to Goldeneye from '95. The Aston Martin is a throwback to some of the other films, most notably Goldfinger.

    The lock-up Bond kept the Aston Martin in is in a town called Deptford, just outside London, walking distance from Greenwich. I used to walk past that lock-up often when I lived there. Deptford used to be deprived part of greater London, now it's been gentrified and is a hip place to live.

    Judi Dench who plays M. Has been in 7 bond flims. Not just Daniel 007 movies. So it was a great call to end the character because it was to make you feel the impact that 007 felt. She is such an Iconic character so watching her die in this movie is heart breaking. You've had to watch the older movies to really feel that.
