Phil is one of the greatest supporters of metal and extreme music. It was Phil who got Morbid on this tour. As much as I love Dime he would never have put a band like Morbid on the bill, he wasn't a fan of death metal. Phil gave Morbid a great opportunity because Death Metal bands never get a chance to play in arenas. I met Trey shortly after this in Rochester when Morbid did their headlining tour for Gateways and he was very grateful to Phil and Pantera. They really deserved a chance to play their music for a wider audience. IMO Morbid Angel are just as important and influential as Pantera are. With Pantera they influenced a whole new generation of bands that IMO are not very good or original in anyway. They took elements of Pantera and made it mediocre though Pantera themselves were an amazing band, one of the greatest the genre has or will ever see. Morbid have influenced extreme music perhaps more than any other band. Sandoval was the first real precision hyper speed drummer. A few others had done the blast before him but he was the first to solidify extreme drumming as a new style done with intense speed, accuracy, and precision. He is undoubtedly the most influential drummer in extreme drumming history. Trey Azagthoth is equally as influential in that genres guitar playing and is one of the most unique talents in guitar playing to this day. Morbid Angel defined the style more than anyone. Some say it was Chuck from Death which I would agree started the more guttural vocal approach but it was Morbid who solidified all the aspects that have become defining in the genre. Altars of Madness IMO is the first real extreme death metal album that incorporated all the techniques which became common in the genre, though there was and still is nothing common about Morbid Angel's music.
massive morbid angel and pantera fan here. How do you know dime didn't like death metal and what was his problem with it? jealous of treys guitar work?
If I remember it was Pantera, Slayer, and Morbid Angel. As a broke teenager, I had to work and couldn't attend. Still regret it to this day. P.S. I literally just saw Pantera play two hours ago, but obviously not the prime lineup from the 90's.
13 years later and I still watch this. My fave bands as well dude. What I would do to go back to this. Wish I could see chuck schulinder w death one last time too. Sigh.
This sucks totally. Black metal is way way way more technical and better than this. Gorgoroth could trample morbid angel and pantera both any day. If you want true metal listen to cradle of filth and gorgoroth
Haha cradle? No thanks. Maybe their first 2 albums and that's even pushing it. Mayhem, Celtic frost, and venom are far superior in every single way imaginable.
Reviving this thread.but i was at the extreme steel tour and that was not the line up.at least not the Dallas show.it was Pantera Slayer Soulfly and Static X . I did see Pantera headline in 97 with Morbid as the direct support thou.
Yes, this is Feb 6, 2001. I saw them two nights before in Las Vegas and Phil came out for the same song. I swore this was the Vegas show though. That was the best Pantera show I saw. The crowd was so live that night Phil just hung the mic around his neck and held up his arms so we could just scream... The bill: Nothingface Morbid Angel Soulfly Pantera Awesome.
My band covered this song in the late 90s. David killed the vocals in Blessed Are The Sick - no idea why he ever changed his vocal style. It was magnificent.
Vocals on Blessed and Covenant are unbeatable. I wonder the same, maybe the old style was destroying his voice and he had to develope more ”correct” technique for longevity.
And he's gotten most of it back recently, what with the clean and healthy living he does now. No alcohol, no hard substances, organic food, and just weed and a few cigs to calm his mind.
Domination was one of my favourite albums in metal and Pantera one of the best bands ever period. Phil's awesome, shame Pantera never sorted out their differences- did get to see them live and will never forget having my own circle in the pit, adrenalin flowing. Great memory.
@trance01 It's called death metal, a style of music that Phil Anselmo is a big fan of as well as Black Metal. Morbid Angel is one of the best band out there
Phil Anselmo is the most diverse metal singer the genre has ever seen. I mean in Pantera obviously, to Down, Superjoint, even the obscure stuff like the Illegals, En Minor. For those who have never heard the song Piles by Scour, check it. The guy is a beast. Tony Iommi and Phil should have done an entire album together. Check out time is mine by Iommi and Anselmo.
Pantera is my all-time favorite, my biggest influence for sure! Morbid Angel fuckin rules, also a hugely influential band. I think they are way underrated, especially nowadays with Morbid Angel carbon copies running around dime a dozen
Commando experienced something called the religious neurochemical release. Religion has evolved in humans as a section in the brain that is either active or dormant in people but as an inherent evolutionary trait. It can happen randomly to anyone triggered by an event or coincidence.
Phil anselmo is Like john petrucci on guitar( technically speaking) xD I mean the guy has a beatifulll voice plus a incredible technique to sing from low tones to super high tones!!!
When everything is already perfect at last, and vocal is fucking top notch, and they bring out Anselmo, and he does an amazong job...and few years later old fart comes back and Morbid Angel looks like fucking Britney Spears show on stage -.-
phil anselmo is one of the most versitile vocalist that metal has ever seen.
Easily the most influential vocalist of the past 32 years . You're 💯 dead on .
Yes....Trash metal,Power metal,death metal and groove metal!
could not agree more
@atropusarbaalish4214 no one cares at all
*music has ever seen

enthrallingusername good one, dimebags guitar innovation didnt get near to Trey's Magical work. he did have good riffs, and thats it.
As death metal vocals myself this song can easily get you tied up. Phill killed it.
Phil has a very unique sound. He has some of the meanest highs n lows around.
Respect to Phil for taking a band like Morbid out with them on tour…
Dude Morbid are huge. They were huge even in the 90s
i'd give anything to have seen Morbid Angel and Pantera tour together back then man, my two favorite bands of all fuckin time
Fuc* yeah my man, I would add Sabbath, my three favorites
If I remember it was Pantera, Slayer, and Morbid Angel. As a broke teenager, I had to work and couldn't attend. Still regret it to this day.

This just shows the guy's talent and versatility ......no many singers can cover both Morbid Angel and Alice in Chains with same ease
Greatest frontman of all time. Period.
This sucks totally. Black metal is way way way more technical and better than this. Gorgoroth could trample morbid angel and pantera both any day. If you want true metal listen to cradle of filth and gorgoroth
Grimeyhoob
Is that supposed to be a joke???!!
Grimeyhoob troll much?
Haha cradle? No thanks. Maybe their first 2 albums and that's even pushing it. Mayhem, Celtic frost, and venom are far superior in every single way imaginable.
Sea Change Gorgoroth are the shittiest Black Metal band. I love me some Black Metal, but Death Metal will always be the superior genre.
Wow, I knew he is a very versatile vocalist, but I didn't know his growls are that good \m/
Goddamn, Pete is slaughtering his kit
phil's vocals are awesome !
PHIL ANSELMO IS THE GREATEST METAL SINGER EVER
Real Steel Tour 2001. They also did this in Pittsburgh. Pantera Soulfly Morbid Angel and Nothing Face was the line up for that tour.
Yep. Same in Seattle. With the exception of Nothingface, it was a kick ass show!
Chicago as well.
Same in Worcester MA. Damn, it was 15 years ago

Phil Anselmo is a legend. Hails!
My band covered this song in the late 90s.
David killed the vocals in Blessed Are The Sick - no idea why he ever changed his vocal style.

@P1kk3 Same. I sort of borrowed the technique, and it worked really well for me. Frankly, no other style of death vocal worked for me at all, really
Holy shit. Phil at his prime is the best vocalist to walk this earth. Its crazy how good he is at so much
And he's gotten most of it back recently, what with the clean and healthy living he does now. No alcohol, no hard substances, organic food, and just weed and a few cigs to calm his mind.
Phil is and always will be the real deal
I WAS FUCKING THERE~!!!!
PANTERA brought Erik Rutan up to play WALK for the Last Song that Night ~!!
Pete is a fucking machine! Love the bow Phil gave to Commando!
Morbid Angel rocks! I own all albums by this band, and Phil IS the MAN!!! Very versatile man!

This is just beyond awesome, Phil Anselmo just knocked it out of the park.
Not only those songs but remember those hiiiigh Bruce Dickinson-like notes he would hit on Cemetary Gates?
love it!!!
Pantera is my all-time favorite, my biggest influence for sure! Morbid Angel fuckin rules, also a hugely influential band. I think they are way underrated, especially nowadays with Morbid Angel carbon copies running around dime a dozen
You can hate on dave all you want , he was part of some of the best songs MA ever made and that is good enough for me...

Extreme Steel 2001? With Slayer? I made that tour. Phoenix. Last time Pantera ever played AZ
greatest fucking thing i've ever fucking seen
not a big fan of MA, but I have to say, this song is definition of death metal heaviness. just a straight-up obliteration
this isn’t close to one of their heaviest songs, go listen to their discography
Chapel of Ghouls crushes this song
Hard to believe Commando is a born again Christian now. He destroys on the drums
Smack is a helluva drug

🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
A most impressive performance from Phil. I doubt he can do it again though, since his demons destroyed his voice in the long run.
When everything is already perfect at last, and vocal is fucking top notch, and they bring out Anselmo, and he does an amazong job...and few years later old fart comes back and Morbid Angel looks like fucking Britney Spears show on stage -.-
@Paska9009 im thinking it was richard brunelle.. at least it was at one point...
@TemplarReturns Most of the screaming on Trendkill was not Phil.
I was there, Morbid Angel killed it, first time seeing this clip! Do you have the rest of the Morbid Angel set?
Tony Campos was talking about this
