    It doesn't fill or coat anything. It dissolves the top layer of the plastic and that material levels out the micro-grooves (scratches) left behind by the abrasives. You can "nick" the surface by hitting with the nozzle because the surface is soft - until the acetone completely evaporates,once it's gone the surface is hard again. It still makes sense to use a protective coat to protect the headlights from the elements.

    Using this exact same kit I noticed these subtle shatter-like micro fractures in the test headlights I used. I saw them in the upper portion of the headlight you used in this video also. I’m thinking the heat from the vapor is causing the plastic to either contract or expand and it’s stretching it causing those micro fractures. Any thoughts on this?

    • @biosik123
      @biosik123 หลายเดือนก่อน

      This has nothing to do with the vapor or any agent you apply on top. These fractures are inside the plastic, a different kind of plastic degradation, sometimes it can be seen on a newish headlights too. Of course if you have it yellowed and hazy you don't notice them until you polish the surface scratches.
      The vapor fluid is acetone-like, it melts the surface and evens it out so it's glossy - it's not really a "coating" as it does not put any material on top (the vapor itself carries next to nothing, plus it eventually also evaporates, maybe a tiny bit of some kind of UV additive is carried by the vapor and gets embedded on the surface but that's about it).

    • @LatentNarrative
      @LatentNarrative หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@biosik123 3 different headlights all sectioned off with tape and only the sections where I used the vapor had that artifacting. While what you’re saying may be true, based on my results it’s from the vapor. Not sure what it is tho. Think it has to do with the rapid cooling of the material after the vapor treatment.

      Part of the test that I did was actually spraying one of the lights I vapored afterwards at least half of it with the McGuires and another half with another product and both of them came out messed up.. the chemical in the vapor I believe is not compatible with clear coats much unless I did not wait long enough which I don't know why because it was dry.. just didn't put it on the video because it was already getting lengthy.

      @@theheadlightrestorationproI think it's actually M.E.K., not acetone. And I believe it's not a "coating" or "filler". The M.E.K. is essentially melting a very thin layer of polycarbonate which is lowering the high spots into the low spots and smoothing it out to make it optically clear. Vaporizing it instead of brushing or wiping it on could be analogized to spray painting compared to brush painting. I do enjoy watching to restore the headlights.

      I think you are correct in what this chemical is doing. If it is MEK you do not want to breath that vapor in as apart of your job without an organic vapor mask. Will give you lung cancer if you do it long enough. I would skip the toxic chemical part and just use Mothers aluminum wheel polish as the final polish step, that is what I do and the plastic comes out crystal clear. Then spray with a UV protect and you are good for 2-3 years at least.@@big_freedom65

    What’s your opinion on the sylvenia headlight restoration kit? The process is basically first using a surface activator to remove any grease from the lights, clean it off, then sand with 3 grits of sand paper (400, 1000, 2000) then when done use surface activator again, clean it off, use a clarifying compound and apply like you would wax to a car, then wash and clean off then you finally apply a UV block clear coat.
    This is the method I’ve used and have found good results but if this works better I’m really interested in trying.

      From what I’m understanding how you do it is;
      1) Tape off
      2) Sand down headlights with 3M p800 Using dry method(use hand around edges not drill)
      3) Blow debris and wipe with Microfiber
      4) Switch to P3000 Trizac pad and this time use Wet method

    • @theheadlightrestorationpro

      Yeah everything that looks good isn't technically good...
      It offers a little protection from the elements the cold heat etc...
      And even less protection against impact.. when you're driving exceeding 40 mph your car is getting bombarded with stuff especially on the freeway this is why you have Rock chips and things like that on your vehicle or bugs embedded into your bumper....
      I would estimate it's about 95% thinner then an average headlight coating especially one that sprayed...

    Help!!! I have to ask! Somewhere between my 3000 stage and polishing I'm not getting that final clarity before coating. Let's assume that my initial cut, and 800 sanding stage is good, and then the 3000 and polishing are not quite popping like your work. It's good, but it ain't sellable, damnit, I've been doing a bunch for free trying to develop that final clarity...
    Eager to progress!!!
    I should mention, the last two definitely had some after market clear coat that required 400 by hand to break it loose, but then the 3m 500 disc cut like butter.

      And if you're really actually using the supplies I'm using?
      And even the tools?
      A lot of people say they are but 100% they're not at every little thing matters down to what brand of sandpaper I'm using the fact that I use 3M p 800 not 800 sanding paper.... There's a huge difference...
      If you're not that your reason right there...
      Because if I gave you my tools and sat there and watched you do it it would most definitely come out....

      Google -
      This method involves using a specialized tool that sprays a fine mist of polymer vapor onto the surface of the headlight lens, which then reacts with the plastic to create a smooth, glossy finish...
      In a sense a reaction almost the same as I spray coating... The vapor solidifies and creates a smooth coating on the surface the polycarbonate and also penetrating those pockets and fissures... The steam itself is probably only 110°, not really hot enough to melt even if you said it's still for a really long time...
      Although the acetone and chemical compound has a slight melting capability chemically that's just Bond and most clear coats and especially headlight clear coats have these in them..
