I used to own a headlight restoration business and is completely unnecessary to separate the lens from the housing, you only do that when there's really bad damage internally, or for customization. A rotary polisher with some 500 grit to 3000 sanding disks get the job done great, use some polycarbonate polish and protect with UV silicone based clear coat, the one that cures with UV rays. This guy's hands are working way to hard for this, also if headlights are on the car is the best way to work on them. I guess some of us like doing things differently, Respect to this man working hard and earning his money in a honest way.

The yellowing occurs from UV clear coat breaking down, a barrier that protects the plastic. Sanding it off and polishing the plastic will have it looking like new for about a year. For best long term results it needs to be recleared with UV resistant urethane.

Even if this does leak, what is the worst that'll happen. Get a grip people. 2. In the West the whole of the light would be thrown away & not recycled. 3. This guy is very skilled and has probably been doing this for a very long time, and I guarantee you if you snag the blade with that kind of force you're getting some deep lacerations.. enjoy!
the yellow ting is due to the protective layer exposed to UV rays as times passes by the protective layer becomes yellow this should be protected by a layer of uv protector or the problem will come back and the plastic will become brittle.

I've been doing headlight restos for years and never once have I ever taking the lens off the housing in ruin the factory water seal that step is not needed and you definitely don't want to scrape your headlight lens with a razor blade and cut the plastic off of it definitely not the right way to do a headlight restoration all you need is some 500 Grit some 800 Grit some 1500 Grit and some 3000 Grit wet sandpaper to restore headlights when you hit him with the UV protectant clear coat and then you're done and then they stay clear for years to come

No need to take it apart, now he has ruined the seal and water will get inside. It's best to wet sand it with fine grit sand paper and finish on the buffing wheel. Should be done in 10 minutes or less.
that's the dumbest way of doing😁😁😁 for many reason !- they did not use sealant to put it back together, so it will leak 2- they have no idea why they get yellowish!! it's the clear coat on top of plastic cover that turn yellow!! 3- so if you you don't use proper plastic clear coat it won't last more than few moth and and get destroyed to the point of no return😁😁 that's the dumb thing most ignorant people do even in western countries, they just sand and polish without using proper clear coat

@@panemamen The headlights are sealed with a butyl (sold as a coiled rope). To check it for a leak you can close all holes, coat the headlight seals with a soapy water and blow inside with a pump. As easy as checking the tyre. Be sure this video fix will foam all around)))
That headlight would have been straight in the bin at any car dealership I know of with a several hundred dollar bill and now I see that they can be made new with a few simple tools and a bit of practice. Great job
@Minimal 100 times this. Just polishing an existing plastic headlight is a waste of time. I did this to my fogged up headlights. They looked amazing after a ton of sanding and buffing. They looked even worse 3 months later. You have to coat them when you're done.

Err dealers won't be tossing headlights out if money is important to them. You dont even need to pull most headlights apart or even pull them off the car to polish them.
New headlights cost $700 minimum and twice to 3 times that for HED versions. Trashing is not happening, shops are selling them to restorers if not restoring thmselves.

Well seems like a lot more work than necessary. There are sanding and polishing kits you can buy for $20 US to achieve the same results with far less work and without needing to remove the housing from the vehicle. They even come with a clear coat to help greatly prolong the results.
Nope, not exactly correct. He is also polishing the inside, that is the part wich causes permanent decreased light strength. With those stupid 20 Dollar kits ( we also have them in Holland here) it is a very temporary fix.... Most people only polish the outside and they do it mostly wrong also. Another very stupid thing most car manufacturers ( or very clever!) do is that you cannot only replace the plastic front of your headlight! And if you do it by force or heat..... Well place it back after cleaning and in many cases your car will not pass the MOT check... So only option is to replace the whole unit :(

Word of advice: Instead of a razor blade, you can achieve the same results with wet-sanding the lens with a rotary sander, like a Dremel, and using a grade of sandpaper that is fine enough to not take as much material off. The amount of plastic he is shaving off is detrimental to being able to actually do the job again, as car lenses are susceptible to yellowing over time, even if this is done.
I actually just do the outside without removing it from the car and people seem to love it, no need to access the inside. The hell with all the extra stuff this guy did unless he's getting paid really good and I doubt it.

While this is an interesting method..... This could have easily been done in 1/4 of the time by using a 3inch Dual Action polisher with a set of wet-sanding discs and then 2 foam pads - 1 for compound and 1 for polish. Delaminating the headlights from its original seal now means the chances of internal corrosion/degradation of the materials inside and a higher change of water entering and damaging. I used to modify factory headlights and paint them black, leaving only the reflector housing unpainted, and re-sealing headlights gives you a 50/50 chance of it sealing properly. Usually they degrade within a few months and the inside of the headlights have also yellowed, making a simple mod turn expensive because you either spend much more time restoring those lights to look new again or you're buying a new set of headlights.

Old tarnish has to come off first then sand starting from coarse to fine then polish otherwise if he polish from the beginning the results would turn out horrible... Perfection takes time his mistake was no clear coat at the end
Great work. To do this is very labour intensive and to charge for your time to do it would or could be more than the price of a new light unit I my country. Restoring the unit is the right thing to do but economics of where you live dictate this. Great work by this young man thou
Не факт что у него он есть. Да и родной герметик свойств не теряет. Лично, один комплект трижды вскрывал и все с фарами отлично после этого. Не потеет, не затекает, сидит плотно. Чаще, герметик нужен для клеевых фар, котрые геморно вскрываются, клей выколупывается и на что-то нужно это посадить. Вот тут без нового герметика вообще никак.

The result is awesome , however as I can see lots of labour , lots of chemicals , lots of time , some amount of electricity and gas has been used. May be beneficial for us , for them but not for Europe and U.S.
I have polished hundreds of old car headlights (for happy customers) but I am not a genius, but a normal but skilled car painter. And always put 2 layers of clear coat as finish, and yes, first applied a layer of transparent plastic primer.

Even using a good cleaner wax will clean it up well and protect it for awhile.. any protection on palstic is better than nothing...

Рабочий, народный метод. Но не хватает покрытия лаком. Защитный слой он содрал, а новый не нанес. На продажу пойдет
Если "стекло" (поликарбонат) жёлтое, то значит защитного слоя там нет. Пожелтение происходит от воздействия ультрафиолетовых лучей на поликарбонат. И лак лаку тоже рознь. Лак для автокраски не подходит, ибо у него степень адгезии не та, и он со временем мутнеет. А это сопротивление лучей света.
Стекло, фара древняя, считай хорошо помыл...

It's like sanding you got to gradually do it. Remove the big chunks, clean the scratches and then polish it.
Old tarnish has to come off first then sand starting from coarse to fine then polish otherwise if he polish from the beginning the results would turn out horrible... Perfection takes time his mistake was no clear coat at the end

Bad! Хватит на 2-3 месяца, затем пожелтеет, т.к. на заводе поликарбонат покрывается защитным лаком, который дкржиться на пластике.
Видно же стекло, древняя фара...

Great work. To do this is very labour intensive and to charge for your time to do it would or could be more than the price of a new light unit I my country. Restoring the unit is the right thing to do but economics of where you live dictate this. Great work by this young man thou

Не факт что у него он есть. Да и родной герметик свойств не теряет. Лично, один комплект трижды вскрывал и все с фарами отлично после этого. Не потеет, не затекает, сидит плотно.
Чаще, герметик нужен для клеевых фар, котрые геморно вскрываются, клей выколупывается и на что-то нужно это посадить. Вот тут без нового герметика вообще никак.
Защитный лак от уф лучей..? Она пожелтеет опять через месяц

Satisfying finish , well done 👍👍, looks like continent Asia , probably india or whatever. It seems that they're doing it for some kind of necessaties. The result is awesome , however as I can see lots of labour , lots of chemicals , lots of time , some amount of electricity and gas has been used. May be beneficial for us , for them but not for Europe and U.S.
I have polished hundreds of old car headlights (for happy customers) but I am not a genius, but a normal but skilled car painter. And always put 2 layers of clear coat as finish, and yes, first applied a layer of transparent plastic primer.
Nice job! We are too lazy in this country to do it that way.

На следующий год опять будет восстанавливать фару. Защитный лак не нанёс на стекло. К корпусу приделал без герметика.
This is not a technique. This is a process. Excellent work but more than a simple technique.
