One thing I HATE about the Rumble match is the "Trash talking with your back to the ring elimination" spot. Wrestler A eliminates Wrestler B. Wrestler A stands there against the ropes and talks smack to wrestler B. Wrestler C comes up from behind and eliminates Wrestler B. And then they repeat it immediately. It's idiotic that so many guys would stand there facing the ropes during a battle royal.
Worst yet, wrestler A is trying to eliminate wrestler B, so wrester C decides the best thing to do is to prevent wrestler C from being eliminated, like wtf?! Isn't the point of the match to be the last one standing after everyone else has been eliminate? So, in what world is a good idea to prevent someone from being eliminated? (It's understandable in the case of tag team and stable mates, but outside of that is just stupid).
@@DarkManX16this has actually been frequently used for building up storylines, they use the rumble to justify the break up of some made up tag teams and giving the couple some work to do between them in the following weeks, the best is when this happen to reigning champions so they have to defend the belts while having heat between them 😂
Such an interesting channel. Having grown up with wrestling in one of the big wrestling towns (Calgary) it's nice to delve into how the gears work. Thanks, Maven.

If maven goes back to the wwe hes definitely going over fast bro is one of the coolest /entertaining story tellers he reminds me so much of the rock how he talks to and treats his fans 💯🎯 much respect for this guy!
This was a very interesting and insightful video, the one time I saw live something went wrong was in 2020 when AJ Styles got injured after taking Edge's spear wrong. It would be interesting to see the sheet for that rumble to know when and by whom was AJ originally supposed to be eliminated. As a fan one could tell AJ was meant to stay longer because by the moment Luke Gallows came in, he looked so out of place. It was also evident when AJ told Corbin about his injury so he told Edge to eliminate him. I always remember that incident, but with your video I see it with a different approach and I respect the profesionalism of all the people involved. Unreleated, but love your content Maven!
It's interesting to me, that it seems this new identity wrestling has become, where they admit some of the show behind the scenes is just that, a show...and are honest about predetermined outcomes, has brought a ton of fans back and created this environment of honesty where NOBODY is focused on whether it's real or not, and get to just focus on the performance. This is a breath of fresh air. I grew up in the 80's during hulkamania and got out of it in the early 2k's, but have come back since and noticed a much improved professional wrestling 👍
So you grew up during the 80s golden age and somehow missed the national headlines WWF made in 1989 when they told the New York Times that wrestling was predetermined and entertainment? 🤔
@@NoneofYabiz-rx3zi even tho it was in the times it took a decade or so for information to truly disseminate. Even most of the wrestlers kept up the act when I was losing interest around 2k. 80% of the crowd even then wanted to argue it was real 🤢 That's hardly the environment anymore, and it's a relief.
Paul getting in trouble for showing off how good he was is still one of the most messed up endings I have ever heard. Like anyone, that was his way to get the noticed. Him doing a great job doesn't mean he took away from other people. The other people could have done something to stand out but that's on them.
Exactly my thoughts. They always say, "it's your moment, you go out there and make the best of it." Then when someone does, they get their asses chewed out for it. It's like the argument Big E had with Miz about Kofi Kingston. Miz was right that Kofi never pushed for himself to get that main event spot back, but at the same time, Big E was right that Kofi was doing as he was told.
The thing that always had me SUPER impressed about that botched finish is how quickly they adjusted on the fly and had the two Raw referees immediately call Batista the winner while the two Smackdown referees insisted Cena had won. If you remember, the entire gimmick going into the 2005 Rumble was Raw vs Smackdown in a "back alley brawl". We briefly had that 4v4 Raw vs Smackdown face-off halfway through the Rumble match and we also had Eric Bischoff and Teddy Long make appearances to cheer on their respective brands. So to take that overall PPV gimmick of "which brand is superior?" one step further by making a lightning quick audible using the referees to make a biased call at the end based on which of the two shows they happened to referee for was a genius move.
Steve Austin (as The Ringmaster) accidently got eliminated earlier than he was supposed to be in his first Royal Rumble in 1996. Dude got a hard clothesline from The Sultan (future Rikishi), which sent him high into ropes, which were covered in body oil. The ropes were so slick, it caused Steve to slip right over and out...
I remember Steve talking about that because he was supposed to be in the Final Four with Shawn, Nash, and Bulldog, and part of this was supposed to lead to Steve and Shawn's fued at their house sshow loop around that time. Now that Steve's gone before big problem, but Steve credits Shawn for being the ring general he was as the two look at each other and realize problem, Shawn ends up doing something like getting close enough to the esge so Steve can pull him under the rope and they can fight or something like that. But yes mistakes happen at an event like the Rumble.
there's also another similar incident in Royal Rumble 2011 where Alex Reiley was eliminated way earlier than expected by Cena and Kofi helping each other by put him over the top rope but Alex supposed to catch the rope and return to the ring but he slip and fall off which cause panicking backstage cause Alex supposed to eliminated Cena so they called audible by having Alex distracted Cena in the ring and have The Miz who's watching from commentary at the time eliminate Cena instead

Thanks for breaking this down Maven. It was all very informative. I've always wondered how this match is pulled off. I always assumed certain spots were planned such as your dropkick elimination of Undertaker but the fact that the match was charted so in depth is very interesting.
The rumble is my favorite of the 4 major ppvs. I'm always excited to see if there's either someone returning or if there's a one night only i.e. Nash, Bob Backlund, Mr. Perfect. Etc. I was at the 2005 rumble where vince tore both his quads and was very disappointed when it was just a normal rumble and no one made a surprise showing
Hey Mev I have a question. Suppose during the Royal Rumble match, the proposed winner of that year would get accidentally eliminated, then what would happen? Does WWE keep a backup winner for this type of situation? BTW, love your channel and the videos.
The respect and professionalism the undertaker had towards Maven to agree and allow him to eliminate him at the rumble was magnificent. Shows how stand up both these wrestlers are. Great stuff Maven!
Maven booking a Rumble better than WWE has in fifteen years. Paul London getting heat for his '05 elimination is insane, that was a memorable moment that did no harm to the match whatsoever.
@@gudnytXPeople have two fond memories of the '20 Rumble: Edge's (badly shot) return and McIntyre eliminating Lesnar, who'd already buried the first half of the match. The rest is the usual pale imitation of when WWF/E knew what they were doing.
I gained a new respect for wrestlers seeing the run sheet you made and then managing time/position while fighting and then remembering what your suppose to do on page 10 while not getting hurt with that many people in such a small area. lots of moving parts , lots of ways it can go wrong . I used to watch WWF from Hulk era to Austin Era and I can't recall a mess up.

It legit makes me low key upset that London got heat for that. The egos in this business over things that dont necessarily affect them have always bewildered me. If he went out and did what you said, went out at the time he was supposed to and didnt mess anything up, he shouldnt get heat. He made a moment within his guidelines thats still referenced today and he should be praised for engaging the crowd instead of somebodys ego getting bruised cause he made them look bad. 100% agreed. That London received backstage heat for that moment only serves to highlight how petty and pathetic so many people in this business can be.

Maven! I interned at WWE and so you know what it’s like as a fan once you know how the sausage is made…. It’s never the same! It’s hard for me to nostalgically enough WWE stuff sometimes but I grew up watching you (sorry to make you feel old lol) and your TH-cam channel has been so comforting and enjoyable to me! For years now I haven’t watched WWE content on my own time for pleasure but your TH-cam channel has really gotten me excited about it again.
Maven is so good at picking a topic within wrestling.
I had always wondered how the Royal Rumble worked, and this was really insightful - thanks and love this channel.
Yeah. I basically hate that already eliminated wrestlers or wrestlers not even involved can eliminate the ones who are still alive in the match.
My absolute "favorite" spot is when a tag team eliminates one another 🤦🏿♂️ your only ally in the match and you eliminate them early for no reason
@kessel12 I hate when Austin kept leaving the ring during various rumbles and getting back in.
I hope you'll enter this years Royal Rumble, I would pop more than ever! Thank you for the video Maven, keep it up.
Been a wrestling fan since I was a kid and to be honest I don't seem to remember you but man, you are a great story teller and feels like a genuine human being. Just subscribed and enjoy your relaxing stories.
Can’t wait for your theme to hit tomorrow in Tampa, dude! 😂
This did not age well.
RIP Test 😢
Also one of my favorite rumble bothches is when cena and batista both went out and landed at the same time, vince got so mad he tore his quads
The rumble has always been my favourite match of the year. Love to hear behind the scenes information on how the match is constructed!
Sup Maven, you have the best channel and this the first time that how Royal Rumble planned out and thank you for it I love your channel 😁💯
If maven goes back to the wwe hes definitely going over fast bro is one of the coolest /entertaining story tellers he reminds me so much of the rock how he talks to and treats his fans 💯🎯 much respect for this guy!
I love the transitions to your past videos. Even though I usually already know them.
Maven I love your channel. You and Stevie Richards are killing it!
Just some of the best wrestling content out there! I love these videos he puts out!
Thank you brotha! Hope you’re having a good one!
Maven, this is my new favorite channel. Keep on posting, im subbed!
🙏🏽
80% of the crowd even then wanted to argue it was real 🤢
That's hardly the environment anymore, and it's a relief.
It's just like how we enjoy good movies. You know it's not real but it's fun to watch well choreographed action and follow a good storyline
@@Vangror pretty much. Once everyone is past the bs you can actually enjoy the show 👍
I knew it was predetermined when I was 6....still LOVED it
Maven has become my favorite wrestler thanks to this channel :) Greetings from Finland.
AJ lee, Maven, Kennedy and chris master potentially entering the rumble? You know it's gonna be a good one.
I'd love to see them all make appearances. Hell, it'd be cool to see Masters back full time, dude still looks like a million bucks.
Oh man, I will pop if I hear “MISTERRRRRRRRRRRR!!KENNEDYYYYY!!” 🙌🏼🔥
I think aj Lee's injury prevents that
Love the explanations of the wrestling world! I have been a wrestling fan since I was a kid in the 80's. Thank you!
Just imagine if Maven returned in the Rumble 🔥
Wouldn’t work without taker in their
Maybe this time he eliminates Punk and then start his feud with punk because maven has some dope mic skills tbh
At number 11!
Maven is without a doubt one of my favorite wrestling creators on TH-cam. Keep up the great work Maven.
They always say, "it's your moment, you go out there and make the best of it."
Then when someone does, they get their asses chewed out for it. It's like the argument Big E had with Miz about Kofi Kingston. Miz was right that Kofi never pushed for himself to get that main event spot back, but at the same time, Big E was right that Kofi was doing as he was told.
Corporate job
Especially when you get a bunch of boomer wrestlers saying you need to grab the brass ring.
That's because WWE is being run by morons.......
I was going to say I was today years old when I found out he wasn't supposed to oversell that clothesline. Sheesh.
Maven you rock. Your videos are so entertaining and addictive. Thanks for the awesome work.
I hope your in the rumble Maven, it would make my day
ALWAYS wondered how this match is called… but I just stopped wondering after a while.
Thank you for this
Really does highlight the Bautista vs cena botch and how quick the refs and Vince played it off and saved it
The thing that always had me SUPER impressed about that botched finish is how quickly they adjusted on the fly and had the two Raw referees immediately call Batista the winner while the two Smackdown referees insisted Cena had won.
What a great channel! Thank you for all of the hard work.
He more than up for it by cheating Brett Hart out of his win.
But yes mistakes happen at an event like the Rumble.
there's also another similar incident in Royal Rumble 2011 where Alex Reiley was eliminated way earlier than expected by Cena and Kofi helping each other by put him over the top rope but Alex supposed to catch the rope and return to the ring but he slip and fall off which cause panicking backstage cause Alex supposed to eliminated Cena so they called audible by having Alex distracted Cena in the ring and have The Miz who's watching from commentary at the time eliminate Cena instead
i'm loving these videos! as a 90's kids attitude era was awesome...even back then when we knew some of the "secrets" we would watch the events open minded and wwf/wwe woul still manage to shock us every time! thnx for the great videos Maven!
Imagine Maven coming in at number 30 tomorrow
I love maven, but that'd be a disappointing 30
@@elconcaro8031 how
Or 11
@pleaseshutup7053 its maven, 30 is for usually for a game changer
i bet its 11 for maven. lets see MJF at 30. I want to see punk's reaction if that even happens, or 29, reserve 30 for the rock.
I haven't watched pro wrestling in over a decade but hell I love seeing the behind the scenes and story's about it.
Wow, i didn't know that the Rumble match is almost strictly scripted, always thought the wrestlers have more freedom, more like going with the flow, thanks for the informative video as always Mave .
Easily the best rundown of how the royal rumble works, this is my favorite video you made man
Maven with another banger!
Extremely disappointed not to see you in the Rumble, but at least we get to see you on your awesome channel.
Love you bud!
This was pretty cool background. I've wondered how they plan these things out as they seem so chaotic when you watch them.
So I'm a newer subscriber and wondering: since I think we are similar ages, have you done any videos on you own fitness and exercise currently? I'd be curious to learn more of what you do to stay in shape. Thanks!
I have gotten into stretching and flexibility work since about 2017. It’s the one thing I neglected during my younger years… and it’s catching up with me. So I work daily on more yoga type activities
@@MavenKHuffman Awesome. I hope maybe you do a video on this topic in the future. Keep up the great content!
Thanks for breaking this down Maven. It was all very informative. I've always wondered how this match is pulled off. I always assumed certain spots were planned such as your dropkick elimination of Undertaker but the fact that the match was charted so in depth is very interesting.
Hey that’s me at 0:05
I freakin love your channel Maven so glad I found this ❤
The rumble is my favorite of the 4 major ppvs.
Man been watching a while now good to listen to mave speak, loved his in ring work and underdog story in the business, thank-you for it all sir
It would be awesome if you and Undertaker did a video together.
Seeing these complexities to run a royal rumble match simply shows how much of a genius Pat Patterson is. He is simply GOAT! Thank you, Sir Patterson!
Wrong
The 2023 Rumble was fantastic, tf?
Aint no way you’re sleeping on the 2018 and 2020 Rumbles!
Maven breaks down the Vince's obsession with power over good people
Your videos are so cool, man. I always notice your background as a teacher because your videos are always super informative and you present the information like a class sometimes. Helps me retain this information a lot better than I would have if someone else explained it. Not that I have any aspirations for pro wrestling, but you know lol
Wait paul got in trouble for that spot at the rumble? It made Gene look tough and gave a great elimination.
love your page!! learned so much about wrestling made me fall back in love with it!! im 31
Keep it up, Maven. Love your videos and your attitude about everything.
100% agreed. That London received backstage heat for that moment only serves to highlight how petty and pathetic so many people in this business can be.
similar incident happened with JTG oversell Santino's The Cobra finisher as well.
Man, if they just stepped up production on these I could see this channel really blowing up!
