"I still don't understand how he didn't jump the barricade" Dad wasn't stupid. Best case, security walks him out of the building, worst case New Jack seriously injures him with that shank.
He failed as a father. Plain and simple. His son was 17 and shouldn't be allowed to fight there. He basically watched how he killed his son and didn't do anything. I don't feel bad neither for his son nor the father. Natural selection.
@@IPYES I read somewhere that the father backed up the son's claim that he had been trained by Killer Kowalski so I think the dad certainly bears a lot of the responsibility as well
New Jack has to be the greatest wrestler of all time the way people like you still think the guy he portrayed on screen and the guy he was in real life are one in the same, you probably believe hogan when he says he worked 400 days in a year brother
@@tulstrabruh even if he acted differently, he still committed multiple crimes in the ring and has admitted as Jerome young not new jack that he would try to kill people in the ring. He would take advantage of the fact that it was wrestling to always take things too far.
That fact alone was probably what got New Jack acquitted. There is a level of negligence on the fathers part for allowing his son to wrestle in the first place. But at the same time this was 1996 and most people knew wrestling was "fake" (scripted) but how real the work is was not well known, it was a common assumption that wrestling was completely safe and wrestlers never got hurt in the ring and its not like you could just google it and find out online super easily like you can today, the internet was in its infancy and the business was still being protected. Though I don't know if he was aware his son had to lie about his age and credentials to get in the ring, if he did then there was really no excuse at all and he would be at the very least equally to blame.

It's funny... Royal Rumble 2002 was my first memory of watching wrestling with my family and in turn is my favourite PPV ever. Maven will always have that small place in my memory of wrestling.
Well done Maven. Really appreciated all the "B-Roll" footage cut in during the interview. I'm hoping you produce more of these types of long form interviews.

Hell yeah, Maven had the voice and presenter skills to do more of these deep dive "Dark side of the ring" style incidents. One of my favourite new channels of the past 18 months, keep it up Maven & team!
Lol, the camera filter and shooting style of an actual true crime show. I love it. Maven's doing a real good job at keeping his channel interesting and not falling into a content pitfall.
They use the filter because TH-cam’s AI bots can automatically detect blood and demonetize a video. Lots of channels bypass this by showing blood in black/white filter

Yes it was meant as a light-hearted joke. For example, I recall he had major heat after eliminating the Undertaker at the Royal Rumble. The crowd went absolutely crazy. So, he obviously has first-hand, personal experience of what heat is.
That toaster shot was brutal...I love how D-Von picked that as the point that Mass Transit probably had second thoughts. And Maven, you're fantastic bro, I'm so happy seeing you pop-up on my TH-cam feed lately. You articulate these types of things so well, and you deserve success in this venture.

Yeah, these are great. The Booker one was awesome, this was too, in a dark not so fun way... can't wait to see what he does with all his buddies. They all seem to have some deep content to bring in addition to their personalities.
Considering that they've been friends ever since the Ruthless Aggression era. A 21 year long friendship, and this video is just a small glimpse of that friendship. I'm all for more Maven and D-Von videos not just for their time in wwe but for the other promotions from the early years up to today.
Of all the people I've heard tell the story of the Mass Transit Incident, I knew I'd hear THE BEST version of it from Maven's unflinchingly honest damn good story telling channel.
I met DVon and Bubba Ray at an autograph signing event at the Galleria Mall in Middletown, NY a little over 20 years ago when I was just 10 or 11 years old. They were trying to put Stephanie through a table in the storyline at the time. I remember telling DVon to “get Stephanie” and he said “I will.” I’ll never forget the way he looked at me and smiled when he said it. But they never did 😂
He just randomly shows up at places, huh? I went to a community event at a church and he was there signing autographs and taking pictures. Haha. Like... okay, hi Devon!
One of the things that bothers me most about New Jack is that people always seem to say things like, "Oh, that's just New Jack," or "the kid's not in Kansas anymore." New Jack was a piece of shit that proved it right here. I realize he's a "brother" to a lot of workers that know him, but that's B.S.
Well said, saying "Thats just new jack" is just a cop out trying to justify his thuggish behaviour and basically enabling him. He should have never wrestled again after this
@@swaylikesmusicno he didn’t 😂 . Mass Transit basically asked for what he got . If you ever saw the dad’s video he confirms it 😂. He wanted jack to make him bleed so….. Bommbs awaaaayyyy 😂😂😂
You do realize that Mass asked to be cut ….. and also lied about his age and experience. You just want a reason to not like New Jack, do your own research.
I dont care how good of a wrestler he was. Newjack was a disgusting human being that was truly sick in the head and should never have been anywhere close to a squared circle once he started causing intentional harm to his fellow wrestlers.
I agree, and the idiots in comments acting like New Jack was just teaching him a lesson for lieng about his age are even more disgusting/brainless human sheep. NEW JACK DIDN'T EVEN KNOW ABOUT HIS AGE AT THAT POINT!! So there is no excuse.
Yeah, two things can be true at the same time: The dad was an irresponsible idiot for putting his kid in there and then having the audacity to get mad when wrestling happened... AND New Jack was an unrepentant sociopath who ALSO should not have been allowed in there.
D-Von was one of my favorite wrestlers as a kid. The Dudley Brothers, Edge and Christian, and the Hardy Brothers were the peak of wrestling entertainment for 10 year old me.
It was probably that moment where the big companies like WCW and WWE decided that he’d be too much of a liability to sign, and it was probably the Vic Grimes incident where wrestlers that worked for the big companies decided that they wouldn’t want to work with him either, so he just sealed his own fate to be doing garbage matches for indies, though he did have a little run at TNA, but he was heavily neutered there
@@JamesJohnson-tr1gu and yet despite all of New Jack's garbage matches and hardcore wrestling, Jim Cornette still seems to like him - which goes to show that Cornette cannot be deemed a serious and unbiased commentator.
I remember this was on my local news because he was from my area. I just starting watching ECW at this time. I was like wow this stuff is really legit lol
It is sad yes but honestly could been avoided if they did a proper background check on the teen and for teen to not lie about his age and credibility of being trained
New Jack really was a piece of shit. Fair enough you wanna show the new guy you don't get to make demands, but it's not as if he walked in & threatened to kill New Jack. A few still shots would've delivered the message. That was too far. New Jack should've never worked again after that
Yes. Notoriously attempted to kill Vic Grimes (iirc) by throwing him off a scaffold; he missed where he was aiming for and so Vic *only* broke his ankle. The other time he straight up whipped out a knife and stabbed someone in the ring, repeatedly. The fact this man somehow had a long career eternally astounds me.
@@drakesaysgaming1911 Oh I know those are the 2 incidents I was talking about, I just wanted to give someone the opportunity to explain them cause I didn't want to lol Though I think your misinformed on the first one, He didn't miss (unless you mean he missed while aiming for the floor) He was TRYING to kill Vic, He even said so afterwards. I believe that was payback for that botch where they fell off a platform and Vic landed on New Jack's head on a concrete floor giving him brain damage (Im pretty sure new jack caused that botch tho)
He tried to kill Vic Grimes, he beat the piss out of Gypsy Joe because he was headbutting Jack's nose and no selling. He stabbed Hunter Red because Hunter didn't want to talk about the match and it pissed Jack the hell off. With Vic, it was revenge for an incident in Danbury and because Vic was bragging about hurting Jack.
Maven, I have enjoyed many of your videos, but this was the best hands down. Going inside this almost mythical event, seeing the video of the bingo hall, and hearing about it from D-Von's perspective was a great glimpse into the history of pro wrestling.
I seriously don't understand a wrestler's reasoning for defending this. "Oh this rookie needs to be smartened up, LET ME TRY ATTEMPTED MANSLAUGHTER." I don't care if this kid lied about his age and background, NJ took liberties on someone who was clearly defenseless and didn't know any better. Imagine working a desk job and your co-worker shanks you for asking how to use a printer.
@awesomeFrost Dvon could've said something but the truth is most likely all he'd have done is earned himself a similar beating. Mustafa had a better chance and should have said something but that situation is a lot more complicated if you're in the midst of it than it is for us in hindsight.
Great video. I love how Maven asks good questions and D-Von's comments about the match are very on point without going into personal opinions about people's behavior in the match. On that note, I honestly can't believe New Jack got away with this. Doesn't matter that Mass Transit was 17, it was the fact that he cut him in a way meant to seriously injure him. If he had just bladed him to make him look bloody and done the rest of his actions, I wouldn't have given it much thought. The fact that he left the building as soon as the match was over tells you all you need to know.
I love how people preach about not taking liberties with others body and not letting them do it to you, UNLESS were speaking about New Jack. He somehow got the pass.
He's part of the privileged and pampered in America. Can't say anything to them or about them without getting that label. They know it and take every liberty they can. Wake up.

He was a very disturbed individual and also was trained during the absolute height of Kayfabe. One fact I remember from his interview in Dark Side of the Ring is his old coach gave him the advice along the lines of "Always outdo what you've done before", so with that as personal justification he did more extreme crap that put himself and his opponents in actual danger. To the point that he was just... okay if he ended up killing one of them in the ring. The thing I'm most shocked by is that he never did actually kill anybody in the ring.
D’Von is one of my all tome favorite wrestlers. The Dudley Boys has to be one of the greatest tag team duos ever. Their gimmick was so much fun to watch. Thank you for always putting on a great show.
This went way over the line from wrestling to a criminal act. How New Jack didn't end up in jail is a travesty. New Jack claiming he new he would be cut was a weak excuse. That is far beyond any kind of blading a wrestler would expect.
The kid asked to be cut, and that's what made the jury find New Jack not guilty. Plus fault goes more on the management for not properly vetting the kid, since he claimed to be 21 and trained and they just happened to believe him.
@@joelcastro-reyes1667 I'm not a pro wrestler, but I've never heard of anything New Jack did being even remotely like what even an experienced wrestler would expect when blading is agreed to. I think it's telling the experienced wrestler that was there talks about being shocked and horrified by it. Just like boxing, yeah you are agreeing to get punched, but that doesn't mean if you are knocked down your opponent can beat you to death. There is just no excuse or justification for this at all.
I imagine with New Jack's reputation, when word came out that he was looking at prison time all the wardens across the nation sent the judge a group letter asking him not to convict😂
Maven, the professionalism and quality of your content is very striking. I am to young to have caught your in-ring career live, but I’m grateful you’ve decided to embark on this TH-cam career. More Breakdown videos, please!
You can tell that D-Von feels remorse for the kid, in retrospect, but Maven is incredibly cavalier about a minor getting nearly murdered by a vindictive sociopath.
I love wrestling. But there is no defending New Jack as ''It's just New Jack here''. That is evil shit to take advantage of a late replacement wrestler like that. That's different than just roughing the guy up, it's attempted murder here. The going to plan shit went out the window when D-von said himself that he didn't know anything but the finish when working New jack 14:00 Love the channel, but let's not minimize how evil and plainly sociopath the Mass Transit ''Incident'' was. New Jack is a piece of trash if you ask me.
Never thought that in 2024, one of the best wrestling youtube channels would be Mavens of all people. Keep up the quality work, you are killing it. Goes to show anyone can make a comeback.
I was thinking the same thing after watching this - he's clearly a very articulate, thoughtful speaker when he's being himself! That was fantastic! It goes to show how much of a character, "DVon Dudley" really is.
I'm really enjoying the variety your channel's offering, Mave. Good stuff! We're all still waiting for you to appear on Taker's podcast, though. Hahaha!
I’m in an indie promotion in England. We have trainees ranging from 12 years old up to 28 years old. There’s a couple new wrestlers on the shows who are 15, but our policy is that nobody under 16 years old can be hit with weapons and they are excluded from any type of death match. At 17 they can be put in death matches, BUT they can’t watch or perform on the 18+ shows that we might put on, which contain far more bloody death matches.
I mean, why? Death matches being used so often just dilutes an already diluted match type and only serves to potentially injure young wrestlers - what purpose could any feud involving a 17 year old serve by going that far? What story does it tell? Does it really increase viewership or tickets sold to have death matches all the time?
@@NonSenseMcGee We don’t have death matches “all the time”, but when we do there’s rules regarding age. I wouldn’t say it’s a common occurrence to have a 16-17 year old in a death match, but occasionally yes, they happen. As for why, I’m not the booker, so I can’t say for sure, but it does sell tickets when we put them on.
Maven i love these types of videos! I really hope to see more of you breaking down infamous moments with someone who was a part of said moment. awesome!
As someone in the southeastern U.S wrestling scene it amazed me just how often New Jack got booked when he was clearly mentally unstable. I only knew him post skull fracture, but many people claimed he came out of that injury as a completely different person. New Jack was legitimately the scariest wrestler I've ever met out of character. He legitimately made me question at times if he forgot that what he does was supposed to be a work. He's intimidating, violent, and merciless. I often wonder what he got up to on days he wasn't in the ring. I can't imagine having him as a neighbor or something.
There is (to no one's surprise) a Dark side of the Ring episode of New Jack. Pretty much all the stories New Jack tells begin with "So I was high on so and so". But then pretty much everyone says "Jerome was such a sweet nice guy"
The fact that a grown man LIED and allowed his 17 year old son to be almost killed can't be understated. He lied about his age. If an underage kid uses a fake id to get into a bar and gets beat up in a bar fight....you blame the guys that beat the kid up?
@mastervoz no I blame the bar for having such poor standards that they are letting underage people in with fake IDs. 100% of the time, the bar is liable. As should be the league. Checking an ID isn't very hard.

The world is for sure better off with not having New Jack in it. Maybe he took too many blows to the head Benoit-style I dunno, but something was clearly off with him.
You’re very right here. When New Jack came back from that “death fall” with Vic Grimes he was really, really effed up. By his own account, he had brain fluid leaking from his ears and eyes, was permanently blinded in one eye, became an insomniac AND had issues with memory and self control. The substances definitely didn’t help. But if memory serves, every one of Jack’s more infamous incidents occurred after that head injury. That doesn’t excuse anything but maybe explains some things? Maybe?
New Jack had some very interesting accounts of this in some interviews during his final years where he wasn't trying to be over the top. When it got to court, he got Paul Heyman and ECW off the hook almost immediately. When Erich Kulas' lawyer was trying to establish how long New Jack had worked for ECW, Jack said that he didn't work for them. Even after the lawyer pulled out various magazines with pictures of New Jack in ECW, Jack responded with "I'm sub-contracted. I don't work for ECW". New Jack was facing up to 11 years for assault and battery with a deadly weapon when the case went to trial in late 1998 and concluded in early 1999, and he claimed that the District Attorney in Massachusetts had been offering him a plea deal right up until the day of the verdict. If New Jack would plead guilty the offer was a five year prison sentence, and he would serve one before being eligible for parole. The civil lawsuit went pretty much the same way as the criminal trial, with New Jack getting acquitted on all counts. As wrestlers had testified that Kulas had asked New Jack to help him "get colour", and Kulas' father had been complicit in lying to get his son booked by ECW, despite knowing that he was underage and had no training.
Anyone defending new jack is menace. I dont understand how they let him wrestle after admitting he tried to kill one guy and after stabbing another guy 9 times in a ring. Dude should have been in jail for the rest of his life.
I used to love new Jack when I was younger but being older you quickly realize how troubled he was as an individual. Total responsibility on ecw as an organization to allow something like that to happen. I loved ecw but this is prime reason why it never made it big time.
@@davidmata1416 Ecw had alot of great wrestlers but when things get this serious its their fault they let him wrestle and they should have been charged tbh.

Mav, these videos are phenomenal. I’m happy to see the friendship you’ve developed with Devon. I’m happy to see this channel doing well, take care my friend.
It seriously blows my mind New Jack was able to work to the extent he did. Since day one of wrestling training, it’s been instilled in me that Job 1 in the ring is to protect your opponent. And if you ever decided to shoot and try to fuck up an opponent like that, there isn’t a chance you’d ever work in the business again. This is far from the only incident involving New Jack.
Mass Transit said he was trained by Killer Kowalski who WAS in the building. Everyone failed to go to Kowalski and ask him to confirm if he trained him. D-Von failed as well as Heyman. Even his father lied about his age. Everyone is responsible for what happened. This incident almost cost ECW the first PPV. The side of D-Von is take we needed & missing that nobody has gotten. Great job getting it.
i heard rumors Kowalski was in the building that night. it floors me that they didn't seek him out to confirm it. Had they asked Kowalski, Kowalski would flat out been like "i never trained that kid, he's lying to u. do not put him in that match he will get killed n u will get sued."

Mass transit obviously had no business being in the ring but there's no excuses for New Jack. He was a vile, remorseless sociopath.
New Jack has to be the greatest wrestler of all time the way people like you still think the guy he portrayed on screen and the guy he was in real life are one in the same, you probably believe hogan when he says he worked 400 days in a year brother
A complete piece of shit. It's not ''Just New Jack'', it's a damn sociopath that will do whatever his crazy mind wants at the moment.

Maybe?
his whole life story is fucked up
Drugs and so many blows to the head is gonna mess you up and send you off the deep end
When New Jack made his way in Valhalla he looked around and said "Where the white women at?"

@@coasteyscoasteys He almost exclusively wears glasses without lenses in them.
New Jack was a psycho
Maven taking no prisoners in this youtube game I love it congrats and inspiring to see bounce back
Maven bro can we please get more videos like this? Absolutely loved the sit down and the breakdown..keep up the great work
Mav, these videos are phenomenal. I’m happy to see the friendship you’ve developed with Devon. I’m happy to see this channel doing well, take care my friend.
You and D-von should pair up more often. This was a great segment.
Great stuff! Would've loved to get Mustafa's version of events for more insight especially now that New Jack has left this realm.
Finally someone realized this was a bad situation in general
i heard rumors Kowalski was in the building that night. it floors me that they didn't seek him out to confirm it. Had they asked Kowalski, Kowalski would flat out been like "i never trained that kid, he's lying to u. do not put him in that match he will get killed n u will get sued."
@@Machete87 he originally came with this midget tag team and they were going to be put on the card. But because Axel couldn't make it, they asked the kid to fill in and jumped at the chance. They had been performing at local malls and fairs so they knew how to game the system on a basic level.
@@hardcorenativextreme yeah i did hear bout Mass Transit performing will Little people in the ring. its mentioned breifly in the New Jack episode of dark side of the ring. crazy how fast it escalated from something minor to something quite big.
@@Machete87 exactly but as that episode saids, ECW original run was the wild west and people should have taken that to heart. Extreme wasn't just a gimmick, they literally had real hard things that left damage. New Jack was one of their true outlaws and enjoyed that freedom
I popped for Dvon had to Testify.
lol… I did too. Caught me off guard
"Yea verily my brutha...D Von shalt not lie!"
Yo Maven, do more of these!
👍🏽
This is content that people want to see. Not just hearing people talk about old stories, all the time!
Glad to see my man D-Von on this one with you Mave
I am kind of stunned that you are covering this, but I LOVE it. This channel is high quality!
Good to see D-Von lookin good and healthy , did he bring the table to put your computer on ? Carry on Maven you do a fantastic job on the tube.
I think D-von was fighting with himself for not breaking the table😂
D-Von was so eloquent and charming. Fantastic guest.
It's good to watch you & 1 of your best friends back in the days doing video together... Happy for you brother
