My recommendation is "Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure". Playing it early this year brought me back to my childhood (the graphics were probably a huge factor in that). The story is silly and whimsical but also sweet. It feels like playing a funny satire of a classic fairy tale.
THREADS OF FREAKING FATE!!!!! I honestly thought I was the only person who played it. Never have I **eveeerrrrr** seen anyone else mention it. SO FREAKING GREAT!!! It's in my top list of "Games That Need Remasters RIGHT NOW!"
I played and still have that game, though it wasn't until a few years that I found the player's guide, and it's a shame that the sequel never came to be
Also have treasured the Game in my memories, it really is something special. The Soundtrack is also great. I actually have seen some montioning Threads of Fate, a couple of times. And also for some reason its one of those Games i am thinking about, while listen to Maple Story´s Track Forgetfulness. (that MMO sure has some good OST´s)
threads of fate is one of my childhood games.... damned someone mentioning it in 2024... i wish square make a sequel... that ending tho... left rue with....
@@pikapikapitiful it was gifted to me while I was young by my grandfather who I didn't see often. He may not be around anymore but I still have my copy of that game
Thank you for actually including a list of the games in the description. So many of these "top # of said genre" videos tend to not have this at all. With the thing is sometimes you know over half of the games in the video and really want to just see if there is anything new (and when there is, Yay!, you want to then jump to that and see it).
Yea exactly! I recommend checking out *_nocaps_* she sure is super dedicated, and not only includes the timestamps, she even includes the coresponding links to the titles, absolutely recommend her channel, also has a very relaxing soothing voice. And loves indiegames. Oh i can see you also know the one that has no name, awesome.😲
To me lunar sss and eternal blue are fell good. Voice acting, humor, the interactions between the characters and the bloopers after completing the games just makes me smile.
Fantastic list. I love Ni No Kuni. Oliver is one of the sweetest and kind hearted protagonists i've seen in gaming in awhile. I also really enjoyed the Atelier Ryza series.
Great picks Alex! I feel like that’s why I love JRPGs: their feel good vibes. I’d toss in Lunar and Grandia as well. I hope people give Lunar a go when the remasters come out next year 🤩
It's probably because it's fresh on my mind, but Okami is definitely one for me. There are a few dark moments, but the game never lingers on them, and the entire game is about being a goddess of life and light healing the world. Heck, your EXP system isn't even earned through battles, it's actually earned by doing good for people and the land itself. Another would be the original Lunar. Again, it isn't without a few darker moments, but it's a classic story of an underdog hero overcoming darkness and being the best he can be, and it's loaded to the brim with charm and lovable characters
Brave Fencer Musashi is such a feel good action jrpg. It has fun medieval vibe in a light toned setting. I still remember playing this and it felt like I was inside of a fairytale. My other suggestion would be Sand Land once you get used to the game. Another one is Radiata Stories for having a slice of life vibe (due to so much to recruit) medieval jrpg. Rogue Galaxy for space adventure, kinda remember Treasure planet. Cat Quest trilogy can be also considered a feel good one for obvious reasons. 😅
This is a fantastic list. So many of these are cheerful and uplifting. I’d also add Kingdom Hearts (particularly KH1). It’s such a joy to play and just JRPG comfort food from start to finish. I’ve gone back to it so many times over the years.
My ultimate "feel good" game in general, not just JRPG, is Pokemon. Any mainline Pokemon game basically. There is something magical about catching creatures and going on an adventure that just puts a smile on my face even after 25+ years of playing them.
Great idea for a top 10 list. I love filing good sometimes. I am going to replay Ni No Kuni next month! Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure also makes me feel good, together with your puppet friend Kururu saving the prince to marry him, and the musical interludes just make me feel good. There are some dark bits, especially if you play the entire trilogy, but just ignore those and feel good for a while.
Octopath Traveler 2 is definitely a feel good game, because damn did I feel GREAT when I finished it! What a fantastic game top to bottom, and yes, Partitio is amazing
I clicked on this video because of the threads of fate thumdnail. It will forever stay in my memory as such an awesome game from my youth. I played it again via emulatpr on PSP. Also got DragonQuest 8 for the same reason as you haha
Star Ocean Second Story R. Although there is some serious subject matter, the bonds between the characters and the voice over effects in battle get you in the spirit of friendship and good feels from very early on.
Loved your picks! I see mentions of Rhapsody here which is another game I love on the cozy side. Magical Starsign comes to mind when I think of JRPGs that are just relaxing, though a little easy
I like to add Phantom Brave. One my favorite JRPGs so happy when I saw it back on PSN. It has its dark moments. But you can't help but fall in love with the characters 💜
Agreed, still playing it, also even though you might already know, there is a sequel coming even to Steam _Phantom Brave The Lost Hero_ the only flaw of it is that NISA is going away from the Sprites like they did since Disgaea 6, but gameplay really looks awesome and fun with all those new features.
You mentioned The legend of heroes trails (aka kiseki) when talking about legend of nayuta, and i want to recommend trails in the sky FC for those who haven’t played it yet! the series has become more popular in recent years, and although one of its main selling points is the grand story continuing over multiple games, Sky FC (and to a lesser extent its sequel Sky SC) has such a cozy feel good vibe. the music is super relaxing! especially the main battle theme, which is a jazzy composition that feels fresh compared to typical jrpg battle themes. as the first game in the series you aren’t yet embroiled in the epic story, and the majority of the game is very cozy and focuses on helping the citizens of Liberl with whatever they need. the dialogue is witty and the characters are incredibly charming. the 2005 graphics are super nostalgic and the steampunk-esque setting adds intrigue. Sky FC is available on steam, plus it’s getting a full remake for switch!
The ones on this list that I've played I FULLY back you on. Octopath 2, Bravely Default 2, Atelier series esp the Ryza series, Ni no Kuni and DQ are all incredible. I suggest the DQ spinoff games honestly. They're good clean wholesome fun with an addicting game play loop. If anyone hasn't played Octopath Traveler 2, they're in for a treat. I wish I could experience it again for the first time. It changed me as a gamer honestly. The ones on this list that I haven't played yet I'm putting on my list as we speak. These are the types of games I gravitate towards usually. I live and work in a high stress environment and gaming is my escape. Once or twice a year I'll play a heavy, intense and emotional game. But I usually game before bed so I prefer a nice chill game for the most part. Thank you for all the suggestions!
I’m gonna recommend eyuden chronicles rising its like 3$ on psn right now . Capcom we need that legends and star force collection soon 😅 the art style won me over decent little game
Love seeing a call back to Threads of Fate / Dew Prism., great game. I've also had an itch to replay Bravely Default 2 recently, I'd love to see it rescued from Switch exclusivity. Might have to grab in on PC next time it 's on sale. Sometimes grinding away in a job/class based JRPG can be the most zen thing for me. ;) Dragon Quest VIII has been on the temptation list as well, it's a shame it's not at least on the "PS2 on PS4" type releases they were doing on PSN. Square always wants to lament he sales of the DQ games but they make them so inaccessible sometimes. My number one cozy game will always be Chrono Trigger. While its story definitely has it darker moments, a sense of hope and charm permeates throughout most of the game. But more than that, it's just one of those things where a game has been your favorite game for nearly 30 years and each conveniently paced NG+ replay feels like the gaming equivalent of sipping hot chocolate while wrapped up in your favorite blanket.
Threads of Fate! This is a game I played over and over, but never worked towards the good ending because I didn’t like playing as Mint. Rue’s story was the best! And it mirrors stories like Vivi’s and Zidane’s from FFIX or Cloud’s from VII. Square was on such an awesome streak in the 90’s! Brave Fencer Musashi is the other action adventure RPG I adore from this time period, and though it’s more light hearted, it’s a must play for anyone if they can get their hands on it.
Lol, playing the Ryza Atelier collab with Another Eden and then seeing it being featured in this video, which is older than the collab, is quite funny to me. A rpg I also love is dragon quest 9. 8 is great but I love 9.
Trials of Mana is one of my feel good games, it is always a solid game that makes me happy when I play it. I also will recommend Secret of Mana as well as Chrono Trigger for those vibes.
WHERE. IS. GRANDIA?! Good list, though. I especially agree with Dragon Quest. That whole series of games gives me this cozy adventure vibe, which is why I always preferred it over Final Fantasy.
I have some feel good JRPGs, and this time I even have some words to describe why. Description might contain spoilers. I definetely find Bravely Default to be the vest entry in the series, but in this regard I have to give it to Second because did it a little bit like FFX in Default. Where Tiz lost the soul lend to him and the romance between him and Agnes wasn't coming to pass. That changed in Second where they revitalized him at the end with the memories he made in his adventures, so that both could be together, Same with Altair and Vega who were able to reunite after an eternity appart. Next is the Epic Battle Fantasy series, where the cast is just funny and nonsenical, the combat interesting and fun, and it has so many easter eggs and jokes which encapsulate the Zeitgeist of that time when the games were made perfectly. The Mario & Luigi series, who doesn't want to follow the 2 brothers on their wacky adventures, saving 1 land after another with brotherly guile and power.
Partitio was my starting character and it was surprising in a game with a several revenge stories to have one guy really focusing the benefits of capitalism.
Honestly, I'm loving Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince. It's clunky, but I'm enjoying it so much more than I expected to. It was on sale very recently (might still be).
Citizens of space. Drôle, joli, tour par tour avec plein de personnages à recruter avec chacun leurs particularités et mini-jeux pendant les attaques (qu'on peut zapper si on veut).
nice list Alex! my recommendation would be the blue reflection games. they are as close to being Ryza as you can get 😂😂so if you've already beat those games and need more of that along with some magical girl type energy then look no further.
If you wanted to go full silly, finding a way to play Thousand Arms would be a very singular way to go. One of the first dating sim rpgs to get to the West, it is a throwback to old 90s anime with pretty great sprites and kind of messy over world graphics that has a lot of nostalgia to eat up.
I was thinking Agnea would be a more straightforward definition of "feel-good" in Octopath Traveler II, though maybe her story arc is a bit too saccharine for some folks.
I'd like to add Inazuma Eleven to this list. Its bot out yet but playing the Demo really sold me on a "younger audience" style game that is too good and creative woth its choices to be seem as "bad". loving it so far!
I still need to go back to Bravely Default II. I got a little ways into it and put it down. I've never been particularly skillful at RPGs, especially not figuring out the ideal party/skill pairings, so I got frustrated with hitting a wall every time I got to a boss fight.
I don't think any happy jrpg list would be complete without metal saga. A weird offshoot of the metal max games, you have an open world with goofy enemies and very strange stories. A revolver on a unicycle, check. Finding a dog in a microwave and kitting him out to be a walking tank? Check. Give this PS2 title a try and lose tons of hours fighting bad puns and a boss who is too good to fight back!
*Clicks hoping to see Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch and sees footage less than a minute in* Nice. I feel I do need to slightly correct you Backlog. It's not just Ni No Kuni, but you forgot to add the subtitle Wrath of the White Witch since there's more than one game in this franchise, like Revenant Kingdom, not to mention an actual movie with just the main title. Just wanted to make you aware of that.
Wrath of the White Witch is what people universally think of when they say Ni No Kuni. If you look at the comments not just in this video but elsewhere on this channel, they don’t put the subtitle in at all when referring to that game
Dragon Quest VIII can get really dark sometimes, so I wouldn't put it as the feel good JRPG. Dragon Quest XI S is more feel good, especially with Sylvando's expanded story
I enjoyed Threads of Fate back in the day. Tried going back to it, but emulating it was freakibg impossible. It was a nightmare to get working and had to give up.. was sad
I understand your struggle! A great way to tackle this is by _taking notes_ while or after playing and _setting clear goals!_ Steam's Notes feature is perfect for this. Jot down reminders near save points or _take screenshots to help you remember_ where you left off. Remember, you don't have to finish every game, especially if you're not a completionist. Focus on one game at a time and set a goal to see it through to the end, if it's important to you. But always prioritize having fun; gaming should never feel like a chore!
I think the whole serial killer storyline (and "Heaven") disqualifies Persona 4 for being feel good, *especially* if you played it so that said person dies and you get the bad ending.
@BacklogBattle fair but I was talking about the social link system the time you spend with yosuke and others in this game always brough smile and had a cosy feel to it
Not sure if Ni No Kuni is a good pick for this list. Very early on Oliver is shamed for crying. Later on there are some fat shaming references towards girls. And all throughout the side quests shaming for not working or not doing the housework. Not so much of a feel good game. Also I think it is not from Ghibli itself. They "only" provided the movie sequences.
Bruh I had the viscerally opposite reaction to Partitio. Capitalism is the cause of most of the evils in the world today, and the naive portrayal that it isn't makes me either laugh or fume hysterically (I usually choose to laugh, at least while playing this). That said, the song for his starting town fuckin' slaps.
I wish I could have gotten into Ni no Kuni but there was a semi-boss fight relatively early on that absolutely destroyed me and I just couldn't get back into it. I felt so bad. 🫠
My recommendation is "Rhapsody: A Musical Adventure". Playing it early this year brought me back to my childhood (the graphics were probably a huge factor in that). The story is silly and whimsical but also sweet. It feels like playing a funny satire of a classic fairy tale.
Definitely deserving of a spot on this list for sure!

@@BacklogBattle Oh okay, sorry I am just very technical and when I notice something is 'off' I tend to point it out as a means to help someone.
It was a nightmare to get working and had to give up.. was sad
Too bad Ni No Kuni never released in the west, we only got its remake
Can't say I expected to see anyone talk about Threads of Fate...ever
I need more help with the backlog battle. Too many halfway finished
Grandia 1
Dragon Quest IX is way cozier than 8 imo
Cant believe persona 4 didn't make it
I think the whole serial killer storyline (and "Heaven") disqualifies Persona 4 for being feel good, *especially* if you played it so that said person dies and you get the bad ending.
@BacklogBattle fair but I was talking about the social link system the time you spend with yosuke and others in this game always brough smile and had a cosy feel to it
LITTLE critters.
Neptunia and Fairy Fencer should be on the list. Those games have funny dialogue better than most AAA games.
Triggered always triggered whoa why ❤😂🎉😢😮😅😊❤❤
Idk if id place Ni No Kuni here, it has an incredibly depressing story.
witchspring r because pies and berries and huggable rideable piggly willgies
Not sure if Ni No Kuni is a good pick for this list.
Very early on Oliver is shamed for crying.
Later on there are some fat shaming references towards girls.
And all throughout the side quests shaming for not working or not doing the housework.
Not so much of a feel good game.
Also I think it is not from Ghibli itself. They "only" provided the movie sequences.
Stop increasing my backlog 😡
Threads of fate in the thumbnail? Oh hell yes! 🥹 I played the hell outta that game as a kid but nobody else I know did. People rarely even mention it.
Understandable reaction!
Bruh, I miss Threads of Fate. I wish I could find a copy at a reasonable price, though 😅
I wish I could have gotten into Ni no Kuni but there was a semi-boss fight relatively early on that absolutely destroyed me and I just couldn't get back into it. I felt so bad. 🫠
