Wow I can't believe my comment actually made it into this video, amazing, thanks Alex , that was a surprise birthday present!! I wrote what I felt about daybreak, from my heart, great that it touched you ,very recently finished the game fully and wow what an amazing game... , has to be the best worldbuilding in any game I have played so far, nice to see that it ranked higher up on your list too!!
That you do this with your community is so heartwarming, man. A lot of other channels could learn from you. Just started watching your stuff recently, I definitly stick around.
I’m so glad that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is your 2024 Game of the Year! I remember playing the original on the PlayStation 1 in the late 90s with my older brother, and he’s the biggest fan that I know. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth lived up to all our expectations. I will definitely check out Metaphor: ReFantazio and Persona 3 Reload due to such high praise from your recommendations. Thanks again, Alex. Have a great and wonderful year!
We are suffering from an embarassment of riches in gaming. What an absolutely fantastic list, you and the community have fantastic taste. Happy New Year Alex, now on to the completely RIDICULOUS 2025!
I stumbled upon your channel sometime last year. I’ve been trying to branch out and introduce different types/styles of games into my repertoire. I remember first getting into JRPGs with Final Fantasy X, and since then I’ve been hooked. So I’m very excited to see VII Rebirth getting love. I’ve yet to play Metaphor, or any of the persona games, but they are very near the top of my list for next game to play. I’m excited to finally be able to visit a Romancing Saga game in time and the entire Trails series looks so enticing that I decided to start with Trails in the Sky on PC. I’m in it for the long haul. I haven’t played too many new games this year, unfortunately. Mostly backlog, but the few I have played I’ve very much enjoyed. VII Rebirth is easily my GOTY.. but I really loved Double Exposure, and my buddies and I are deep into Marvel Rivals right now. 2025 and on looks like it’s going back to the roots of gaming and I’m so excited to keep playing new titles. As a final note, I’d just like to say that I really appreciate videos like this. The community voice recently feels like it’s being drowned in a sea of noise. Content like this really makes it show that you care not only about gaming but the gaming community as a whole. It’s one of the reasons I keep coming back to the channel.
I just finished playing 8 bit adventures 2 and it was one of the best games I've played in years. It's wholesome, fun, has amazing and unique characters, and doesn't overstay it's welcome. Can't recommend it enough.
1. My game of the year was Ys 10 Nordics just because I love the feel and nostalgia of my Ys games ❤️ and norse influence. 2. My preferred would be PS5 3. I'd love to win as I enjoy all older style RPGs and those are what brought me into the genre when I was younger. I'd love to try something new in that same vein
ff7 rebirth, persona 3 reload, visions of mana, black myth wukong, astro bot, dragon quest 3 hd-2d and like a dragon infinite wealth. What an amazing year for gamers. My personal game of the year is definitely ff7 rebirth though. 8 bit adventures 2 interests me for the cool artstyle, interesting combat and world. I hope I win the giveaway and even if don't I will probably check the game out down the line. My preffered platform is ps4/ps5
This year was very special for me. This year i was able to secure a full-time position at my work so a lot of gaming time unfortunately went down. I managed to get some time to finish some part of my backlog, finally finished final fantasy 16. I loved playing games like Balatro and also got hooked again on replaying for the third time Okami. Probably the games i want to play most (and will do next year... probably) is Unicorn Overlord and Metaphor: RePhantasio. Thank you Alex, your channel lets me be aware of the games and their stories. If I were to get one of the prizes, i think I'd prefer nintendo switch or PS5. Have a good one, happy new year for everyone.
I'm so happy you picked final fantasy 7 Rebirth. It's a truly mesmerizing game that I feel is not loved as much this year because of it being an "old" ip. But it's incredible what this game is and how it delivers such a great experience. I'm interested in 8 bit adventures because it's actually on my steam wishlist lol it looks incredible and the way it looks/feels modern even with an 8 bit art design just captivates me to try it. So Steam would be great if I can win! 😅
As a PS5 gamer, 2024 has been an incredible year for gaming, with standout titles like Unicorn Overlord, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Dragon's Dogma 2, and Sea of Stars. Each of these games has offered immersive worlds and compelling narratives, showcasing the best of modern RPGs. Amidst these epic adventures, 8-Bit Adventures 2 has captured my attention for a different reason. Its retro aesthetic and classic turn-based combat evoke fond memories of the RPGs I cherished in my youth, like Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VI. This nostalgic charm makes me eager to experience the game, as it feels like a heartfelt homage to the golden age of RPGs.
I definitely called the Community Top 3. Only because it's fairly consistent with other fan-voted lists. It was jarring to hear my comment being read under my account name instead of my screen name. Still a delight. Thank you, Alex.
2024 was undeniably a tough year for the industry, but it was still somehow an amazing year in terms of the caliber and diversity of fantastic game releases, especially for JRPGs. I love these awards every year, celebrating your top 10 and your community’s - of which I am happy to be a part of yet again. Here’s to another year of backlog battle awards going to extremely deserving games in 2025 🥂
Such a good list. 2024 was a solid year. Several of these games are in my backlog still but Trails Through Daybreak, Unicorn Overlord, and Prince of Persia were some of my favorites that I played last year easily.
happy new year everyone! and what a year it was for jrpgs and gaming in general! metaphor is yet another display of Atlus and their ability to create masterpieces that you will remember for years to come , and i can't wait to see what this new studio of thiers cooks up next.
Switch. 2024 was truly a year filled with amazing games and it seems that it will continue in 2025. Looking forward to next year's backlog battle awards!
In no particular ranked order, my top 10: 10. The Plucky Squire 9. Alone in the Dark 8. Tekken 8 7. Still Wakes the Deep 6. Neva 5. Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth 4. Visions of Mana 3. Astrobot 2. Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver 1&2 Remastered 1. Fantasian:Neo Dimension Preferred Platform: PS5 I'd love to spend some nostalgia triggering time w/8-Bit Adventures 2 as it reminds me of the games I grew up with as a child.
My pic for game of the year was Metaphor Refantazio! I was so excited to hear you read my comments ❤️ I have heard great things about 8 Bit adventures 2 and would love to try it out on PS5!
Metaphor: ReFantazio is unreservedly my top game of 2024! I spent over 150 hours on 2 playthroughs. Such a wonderful game. I'd love to win a code for 8-Bit Adventures 2. As a 43 year old gamer, it touches on so many nostalgic memories and feelings of being a kid, as someone with autism and social anxiety, games have always been my escape and a source of joy throughout my life. PlayStation 5 please if I'm lucky enough to win 🤞 Good luck everyone and Happy New Year 2025!
PS5, favorite game was definately FF7 Rebirth! Reason I need this game is because I wanna dive into more retro turn based rpgs. I just started getting into jrpgs after FF16 and I love it's genre so much, which means I've only played modern jrpgs. So playing old school retro would be cool!
PS5 preferred, Favourite games 2024: Astro Bot, Concord (had fun for 2 weeks XD), Helldivers 2, a few on the backlog from this year that are apparently great just yet to play. 8-Bit looks like a nice change of pace and something i can play on the side while i do some other things.
I played on steam and my game of the yr is Granblue fantasy relink and Trails through daybreak. Both of them were fairly overlooked, slightly disappointed that Daybreak didn't have fun voice casting
Unicorn Overlord is a spectacular and gorgeous game. Mario party jamboree is also pretty dang fun lol 8-bit Adventure 2 looks like it's a lot of fun and hits me right in my old school NES/SNES RPG roots. I'd love to play it on my steam deck!
I own several games that came out this year but haven’t played through them all. But for moment Unicorn Overlord has been my favorite game that I’ve played and completed.
Here's my list of best games of 2024 Dragon Age Veilguard Dragon's Dogma 2 Granblue Fantasy Relink Prince of Persia Lost Crown Metaphor Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth
For me, GOTY goes to Unicorn Overlord. I’m an old school/traditional jrpg gamer at heart, so I was super hesitant to give this a try. Well, I’m glad I did. I couldn’t put the game down. So addicting! I’d love to score a copy of 8 Bit Adventure 2 for my switch. Like I mentioned before I’m an old school gamer at heart haha. It looks right up my alley.
8-bit adventures 2 looks like a blast just based off the fact that I love retro RPGs. Never heard of the first one but interested to see this one. I’d play it on Steam. My favorite Game this year would have to be AstroBot and I know it’s a DLC but the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 was absolutely phenomenal.
Just discovered your channel, (very) recent convert to JRPGs. Immediate subscribe for you. Thank you My GOTY is the one that has likely been solely responsible for hooking me on JRPGs, Metaphor Refantazio. Very special game, still going through it. Helping me navigate the challenges of transitioning back to home life after service overseas. 8-bit Adventures 2 looks to scratch my retro/nostalgia itch I get often. Would be thrilled to play on my switch.
That's awesome you guys are giving away some copies of 8-Bit Adeventures 2! If I won I'd want a Steam copy. The art style on it looks really nice and colorful. Some of my favorite games this year would have to have been Fantasian: Neo Dimension and Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes (also a nice and colorful jrpg). I just got Legend of Mana and Romancing Saga 2 for Christmas too so looking forward to playing those as well!
Don't understand how people complain about there not being enough games to play. I personally have not played most of these games and they all look great.
Unicorn Overlord wins my GOTY! Such a great experience! I recommend to everyone. Been seeing a lot of good about 8 Bit Adventure 2. Looks like a fun take on the genre, and would be great on Switch.
Not too suprised by the top games. I wasn't able to play too much due to circumstances this year. But my favorite games of 2024 as Metaphor Refantazio and The dawntrail expansion for final fantasy 14. Metaphor was an amazing time from start to finish and I played it with a friend watching. And dawntrail was a great time and in excited for the future of FFXIV. As for 8 bit adventures 2, I only ever heard good things about it from chickenfilets and it made me curious. Looked into it more and it looks really fun. If I do win a copy I'd like to get it on Nintendo Switch.
My best game of 2024 was FF7 rebirth and persona 3 reload. 8 bit adventures 2 looks awesome! I grew up with the NES and SNES and it definitely has that nostalgia factor. Platform: Steam.
I loved the 8 Bit Adventures 2 demo on PS5, looking forward to playing it eventually. Id love to win a copy in PS4, it interests me because it looks like the Mystic Quest inspired indie I've wanted for a long time My GOTY was Unicorn Overlord, it was the Ogre Battle successor I've always wanted.
It's wild that we haven't had a single Ogre Battle spiritual successor in the 30 years since that series ended, only to get an all-time classic in the tiny niche this year. And from Vanillaware no less. Great way to follow up 13 Sentinels.
Switch. GOTY for me is Metaphor:Refantazio. 8 bit adventures looks like a game I would definitely play and I’m glad this channel put it on my radar. I can’t get enough of those old school games.
My Top 5 of 2024, in ascending order, are: Silent Hill 2, Metaphor Re:Fantazio (still playing it), Persona 3 Reload, Balatro and Final Fantasy VII Rebirth. Regarding 8 Bit Adventures 2, I've played the first one, loved it and I need an excuse to play the second one. I got a Steam Deck on the way and that would be a perfect first game on that system.
I dont think anyone expected stellar blade to be as good as it is. I am surprised to see it so high up though, given how much criticism the story gets. Personally, setting the voice to a different language made it a lot easier to get through. The combat was absolutely enough to get through, and while the story has holes, is not so bad if you don't listen to the terrible English voice acting.
It is REALLY jarring switching to other languages and hearing the other VAs absolutely killing it. Even people who managed to hear the Japanese voice acting are confused as to why the English is so stilted by comparison. Stellar Blade blade's combat, set pieces, aesthetic (my god do I love the juxtaposition between the model-perfect warriors vs clay-sculpted body horror abominations), and music is a wicked combo. That music, Jesus Christ. You don't get nominated for best Action game and Best Soundtrack 2024 without having serious chops in both.
@@dualie-dude-42 it's a ps exclusive basically first party title, I expected it to be better than it is. The combat is great but probably the weakest story, characters and voice acting a single player marquee Sony game has had in over a decade.
This year was great for gaming no matter what people say. Metaphor was my GOTY in a very close race with FFVII, Wealth, and P3 Reload. I also am interested in that 8bit adventures 2 for PS5. It looks like the dragon quest games my parents played when my mom was pregnant with me
Game of the Year 2024: Persona 5 Royal Game of the Year 2025: Persona 5 Royal Game of the Year 2026: Persona 5 Royal Why? It goes places few games dare to and has one of the best soundtracks in all of gaming. I'm not a big Jazz Fan, but these sounds are so UNBELIEVABLY fitting for this game and I listen to the soundtrack on a regular basis, because it makes me happy and reminds me to never give up and to try my best. This is what great videogames do to you. Everything else is just a videogame.
It's nostalgia. Beyond the lovable characters and good combat, the content and story are simply middling. The side quests and the ending in particular are pretty bad. Older people grew up loving FF7 and those people place it so high because of that, but for people who never played the original, I frequently see them not even mention Rebirth in their top 5s but almost always include games like Metaphor, Reload, Stellar Blade, Sonic x Shadow, Nine Sols, The Lost Crown, or Infinity Nikki. In a vaccuum, Rebirth really isn't that special and pretty much just repeats what every open world game has done before, except it has characters that you may or may not be familiar with. Metaphor also retreads familiar elements from Persona, but at least Persona doesn't really play like any other game series out there and they're released very occasionally. Metaphor also goes out of its way to iterate upon what has came before instead of simply copying an industry-wide overused formula in what appears to be an identity crisis, unlike Rebirth.
@No-RE-q1w I agree with you, but the thing is, I played the original. It was pretty good, but nowhere near VI, and I liked Xenogears the next year more too. Speaking just of rebirth: if it cut about 2/3 of the boring mini-games, it could make a case for being game of the year. I'd still say Daybreak, Reload and Metaphor are better rpgs, and Stellar Blade and Relink had better combat, but I could see the argument. As it sits right now, it's just SE ego getting in the way of a good game
Some great games this year. Here are some of my picks: Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus Cat Quest III Mind Over Magnet I will also include popular picks I enjoyed: FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH Astrobot Metaphor Prince of Persia Unicorn Overlord 8-bit Adventures isn't something I've ever heard of but I bet it plays well on Switch.
My fav game of 2024 is Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth & Metaphor refantazio, preferred platform Xbox. 8Bit Adventures 2 interests me cause i grew up on turnbased games and its my fav Genre in VideoGames! Shameless plug I also post gaming news on twitter threads & Bluesky so gaming is part of my daily life. I have been watching your channel for quiet awhile so appreciate chance and Happy new yr.
Ff7 reb is taken for granted. Will all due respect to astro bot and mainly Metaphor, if FFRed had come out in September 24 and onwards- no one would have talked about astro and metaphor
All of these were from trailers which means they aren't considered spoilers, whether you agree with the publishers or not. Also, these are all cut out of context. If you give them context, then you're the one spoiling people.
@@BacklogBattle Sorry, I think I did not explain myself very well. I was not referring to the video content but the audio. It was only a small detail, and I played the game already so I wasn't spoiled, but some players who played the original and were maybe expecting a different outcome at a particular point in FF7R might be disappointed to hear something you said about something near the end of the storyline. No biggie tbh. Happy new year. Edit: I do appreciate that you use trailer video content and thanks for the disclosure about this. Edit2: We have the same top rank for GOTY 2024 btw :P
I found your channel this year and like the Content ❤. My favourite Game this year was Trails through Daybreak. I like playing RPGs and if i happen to win 8Bit Adventure for the PC i will 100% it!
Some of my favorite games got shafted on this list: The Day Before and Concord. I just like underdog stories and apparently nobody else does. Truly a shame. The reason why I'd love 8-bit Adventures 2 on Xbox is because it'll break my heart to know how much sleep you will lose, Alex, if you shafted me once again. Don't do that to yourself, Alex, don't suffer anymore ❤
Somehow I've never heard of 8bit Adventures. I don't even care if I win or not, can I be told how to get a copy? I absolutely need it. Why? vv TLDR I hated pixel graphic art styles. Growing up I avoided anything I considered "Gameboy Graphics" because I only ever wanted the most stunning visuals. That changed once Octopath Traveler came out. I can promise you I had less than 0 interest in OT1 when it was announced. I did like how it was simplistic like old JRPGs but the graphics put me off. Fast-forward to its Release. I still don't have much interest but my roommate picks it up. Starts it and starts telling me how incredible it is. I see it popping up on My usual YT channels and decided "screw it, everyone says it's so good. I'll give it a shot". I was playing for maybe 2/3 hours before I had Completely changed my opinions. I hadn't noticed all the details in the art style for OT in its promotional material. But after a short time hands on, I was in love. Not only that, I was addicted. It's embarrassing to admit I was well into my 20's when I realized "Games can be more than just their graphics". Now I can say I prefer older games to newer ones. I appreciate the amount of content games used to have. The risks Devs would take on wonky mechanics that get used for 5 minutes during a 40hr playthrough. Not only have I taken a liking to virtually everything coming out in HD2D, but I've been thoroughly enjoying older games with my newfound appreciation. I had played through Fire Emblem Shadow Dragon or W/E it was called, and TBH it was more of a satisfying and entertaining experience than playing most current games that have come out over recent years. To say I love HD2D is an understatement. But it's made me appreciate and adore all art styles in gaming. For that I am thankful. Also if somehow I do get chosen for 8bit Adventures, Either Switch or PS5 is fine with me. :)
Rebirth takes my #1 spot this year, edging out Metaphor due to Metaphor's occasional pacing issues and repetitive dialogue (honestly very reminiscent of P5 in that sense), but both were fantastic games. The most important part is... I think we all feasted this year. Looking at some of the games I played, it's almost surprising even to myself some of the games that wouldn't make my personal top 10 despite loving them. It was a great year for games in general, but RPG fans really had a good one. Now to finally play a Trails game and starting with Daybreak, and maybe getting 2025 off to a good start with Graces F and Daybreak 2. :)
Ngl im not a big fan of the back and forth list. Either make 2 seperate videos or go down each list seperately. Its jarring to hear you talk about the same games back and forth and have your own commentary interspersed with comments. Im here to hear your opinion, im not really interested in random commenters.

Love that you do both our choice and yours, keep on rocking mate!
Kunitsu-Gami: Path of the Goddess was my GOTY 2024. Easily the most innovative game of the year with a great art style and awesome enemy design.
Such a fantastic and fun game. I really didn't expect to enjoy it as much as I did. I hope to get back to it at some point
I'm so happy you picked final fantasy 7 Rebirth. It's a truly mesmerizing game that I feel is not loved as much this year because of it being an "old" ip. But it's incredible what this game is and how it delivers such a great experience.

we p3r enjoyers know it doesnt need to be justified why its our GOTY, it simply is
Great Top 10 list and the community one is so similar to mine wow!
Happy New Year, everyone.🎉
Happy New Year to you too!

My favorite Game this year would have to be AstroBot and I know it’s a DLC but the Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 was absolutely phenomenal.
Just discovered your channel, (very) recent convert to JRPGs. Immediate subscribe for you. Thank you
My GOTY is the one that has likely been solely responsible for hooking me on JRPGs, Metaphor Refantazio.
My GOTY is Xenosaga III, yes I am 18 years behind! I am interested in 8bit Adventures 2 (Switch) because of the channel and the old school appeal!
Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is an amazing title!
Id love to win a copy in PS4, it interests me because it looks like the Mystic Quest inspired indie I've wanted for a long time
My GOTY was Unicorn Overlord, it was the Ogre Battle successor I've always wanted.
@@RicochetForceravens theme is on my playlist!!!
@@dualie-dude-42 I love that as you fight her and she becomes more unhinged the theme simiarly begins to disintegrate in a really sick way.
It looks like the dragon quest games my parents played when my mom was pregnant with me
Romancing made it!!!!!! Yes!!!!
I’m currently crying while playing it
Game of the Year 2024: Persona 5 Royal
Game of the Year 2025: Persona 5 Royal
Game of the Year 2026: Persona 5 Royal
Why? It goes places few games dare to and has one of the best soundtracks in all of gaming.
I'm not a big Jazz Fan, but these sounds are so UNBELIEVABLY fitting for this game and I listen to the soundtrack on a regular basis, because it makes me happy and reminds me to never give up and to try my best.
This is what great videogames do to you. Everything else is just a videogame.
I love P5R and I think Metaphor is close in quality! I go back and forth on which game is my favorite Atlus game.
Feels good to be an Atlus fan.
Rebirth is my favorite game ever and my game of the year
P3 r and metaphor for the win
Putting Rebirth above Relink, Reload and Daybreak is just bananas to me. Rebirth is good, but like 5th best of the year for me.
Here are some of my picks:
Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes
Bō: Path of the Teal Lotus
Cat Quest III
Mind Over Magnet
I will also include popular picks I enjoyed:
FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH
Astrobot
Metaphor
Prince of Persia
Unicorn Overlord
8-bit Adventures isn't something I've ever heard of but I bet it plays well on Switch.
FF7 Rebirth is a truly beautiful game. My GotY. Glad where it landed on this vid!
So I have 3 games I'm picking as my game of the year FF7 rebirth, Metaphor, and Dragon quest 3.
Can't go wrong with either of those top games!
And 8-bit Adventures 2 looks great - PS5 for me please!

My platform of choice is the Nintendo Switch because I can play games anywhere even when life and responsibilities get in the way of gaming time.
I think it's a good quality video but you definitely should avoid including spoilers in games that have been released only this year...
This is more of a Top RPGs of the year. All cool though.
You might want to check Part 1 for the rest!
Somehow I've never heard of 8bit Adventures. I don't even care if I win or not, can I be told how to get a copy? I absolutely need it. Why? vv
TLDR
I hated pixel graphic art styles.
