And finally, at the end of the video, we observe the NZ family on a collective "sugar rush". Love the reaction of the kid's vs the adult taste buds. I see the next Atlanta Kitchen video taking shape.
@ from Wikipedia: Black Forest gateau, sometimes spelled gâteau (German: Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (pronounced [ˈʃvaʁt͡svɛldɐ ˈkɪʁʃˌtɔʁtə] ⓘ), literally "Black Forest cherry torte") and called Black Forest cake in the United States, is layer cake consisting of chocolate sponge cake, whipped cream and cherry fillings and toppings. While it is most likely based on a Black Forest dessert tradition, the cake's specific origin in Germany is contested.
I remember as a teenager going to punk shows at the Paris Theater next door. When the show got out you'd go next door to voodoo to grab a doughnut, back when it was the side door that could fit 4 people tops
Here in Michigan in the city of Grand Rapids, we have one donut shop called Marge’s. Run by Marge an older lady that has run this shop for decades. The donuts are heavenly, also she is an amazing cake designer. She created a shop with the motto “a place where you meet old friends and make new ones.” If you are ever in Michigan for any reason, come visit this donut shop.
I remember when there was only 2 Voodoos in Portland. They have places all over now! I have been to a few outside of Portland, and I have to admit, the doughnuts are just as good as the originals.
We call it icing as well, which is strange because that sweet stuff we put on a glazed donut is icing. Glazing is more of a process, like driving or skating. Icing is the product. Strange. English.
I looked up the difference between the three & this is what I found: The simplest way to differentiate between frosting vs icing vs glaze is consistency. Frosting is the thickest of these confections and is ideal for spreading or piping on cakes, cupcakes and cookies. Icing is a little thinner than frosting and is often poured or piped over coffee cakes, pound cakes, doughnuts and cookies-and it usually hardens when it dries. Glaze is the thinnest and most fluid of the three, and it will set but won’t harden as much as icing.
@jreyman I think of frosting as pretty close, but a bit thicker and fluffier. The texture of the chocolate icing on the donut, for example, is not exactly the same as what you would put on a cake. Maybe that's just me. I can see people using the words interchangeably, though.
@dustinhaba3700 I live in Eugene where they have a location and I just personally think they taste the same as any other location. They got their reputation from great marketing and making a few unique flavors but I personally don't buy my donuts from them. I'm going to eat if someone brings some
I have always liked the Bavarian Cream (custard filled chocolate glazed), Bismarck (raspberry or lemon jelly filled sugar or white glazed), glazed croissants and the good old fashioned Maple Bars.
I'm 74 and have lived in California, Idaho, Oregon and now Oklahoma and as per my experience a glaze is a thin layer of sweet translucent goodness, and icing is a thicker flavorable piece of heaven. So I agree with you guys, some of your donuts had nice icing on them.
I insta-clicked on this one-I had to see what you thought of the maple bacon bar. You got the connection to pancakes with bacon! Glad you enjoyed your donuts! 🍩
The first time I tried a maple bacon bar with chunks of bacon on top it literally blew my mind. I’ve always been a glazed old fashioned, apple fritter maple bar fan . The only time I ever tried Voodoo Donut anything was a craft beer. Fun video guys !
I am really enjoying your travel videos! Even something as simple as this one had me smiling all the way through. If i'm not mistaken you're not even halfway through with your journey yet so there's a lot more left to come.
Black forest donuts do exist and are probably my favorite next to sugar cinnamon cake donut and raspberry jelly donuts 😊 Never had voodoo donuts, thank you for sharing your experience with us. Much ❤
I was going to say this if you hadn’t. Whether chocolate and cherry, or chocolate and raspberry, or Black Forest Donuts with some other similar combo, they’re already everywhere.
14:51 Sorry to inform you Sam, but I've been doing maple walnut ice cream with bacon sprinkled on top all my life. It's another great idea that's unfortunately already been invented. 😂😂
As an American I drive an hour for donuts when I'm really craving them. Strawberry jelly, frosted and especially maple bacon donuts. Light and fluffy are the best
Actually guys it's OPP, yeah you know me. OPP is a hip hop song by Naughty by Nature. ODB is a Long Island rapper that was part of the legendary hip hop group Wu Tang Clan
Hope Denzi doesn't have a crazy sugar rush after this video. Hope you 4 had a good Christmas and a (early) Happy New Year, and have a safe drive on your road trip through America and have fun.
I am a limo driver in Portland I once drove a couple who's wedding was at that Voodoo doughnuts. The best part is they were Police Officers. My favorite part of your Video is Tyler Lockett jersey Go Hawks!!
I'm a native Californian and I remember Randy's donuts,way back when I was a teenager. Great memory,even though I didn't eat them often,it was a landmark everyone knew about.
We call what they were talking about at that time icing, but the really thin stuff like on a glazed donut or ham is called glazing. In the UK, and probably NZ, icing is also used for what we would call frosting.
My favorite Kiwis just LOVE everything we have in the US. It makes me wonder what they have in NZ that's special. There must be worthwhile things to show us there.
During my time as a Firefighter/ EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) at the General Motors Proving Grounds (GMPG) in Milford, Michigan, I also held the responsibility of facility security, akin to the secrecy surrounding Area-51. Each morning, approximately at 5:00 AM, a local baker named Harold from Milford Bakery would deliver fresh donuts to the cafeteria. On occasion, he would personally hand a box of warm, freshly baked donuts to the individual stationed at the main entrance gatehouse (usually me). I would eagerly snatch the apple fritter, leaving the rest for the other guys on my shift, and I must say, even after 23 years, they remain the most exceptional apple fritters I have ever tasted, throughout the entire United States. If you ever find yourself in Milford, Michigan, I highly recommend visiting Milford Bakery and indulging in their delectable apple fritters.
When my brother owned a donut shop, we used to do chocolate covered eclairs, typically filled with custard/vanilla cream, but some customers did like raspberry filled. So they do exist.
I am from Oregon but I reside in Seattle. The Voodoo Donuts here opened about a week before Christmas and the line was a whole 2 1/2 blocks long but so worth it! I am so glad you guys are enjoying your stay in the U.S! It is awesome to see how far you have come :) safe travels!
There’s a burger chain here that lets you customize your burgers with various toppings, greens, veggies, and sauces. But they also let you go wild creating your own milkshakes. One of my favorites was a vanilla ice cream base with root peanut butter, peanut butter, and bacon. It was great. You would taste the pb first, then the root beer notes would hit you, and finally the peanut butter came back around to round it off. And through the sip would be hints of saltiness from the bacon. I’m well acquainted with bacon as a dessert choice.
Have you guys never tried sticky bacon? Fry bacon, when it's almost done, sprinkle on some brown sugar. Continue to cook until sugar is dissolved and a little bit caramelized. Best bacon ever. 🥓
Donuts are usually eaten with a drink tea, coffee, anything.....back in the day they had them for breakfast & used to dunk it in their coffee [ the ones without glaze of course]
Voodoo donuts are good and a little on the wild side. I nice warm Krispy Kreme donut may not look fancy but it sure melts in your mouth. Great video! You guys have so much fun!! 😂
My first donut and still my favorite is maple bars. Apple fritters are generally very tasty. The round one with raspberry jam needed some white frosting on it they're called a Bismarck in the Midwest blueberry is just as good as raspberry 😋 I'm going to try a couple strips of bacon next time I have a maple bar! It looked delicious 😊
My favorite donut is the old-fashioned cake with a vanilla glaze. My yeast doughnut favorite is an Apple fritter followed by a custard creme (Bavarian cream).
VooDoo is wild with its doughnuts. Back in 2003, they used to serve a donut drizzled in Nyquil and then a shot of Nyquil in a cup in the center of the donut-until the FDA stepped in and made them stop serving it.
I've always called the "outside" coating a glaze and the other that is just on top, frosting. Glaze is thinner and frosting is thicker. My best friend used to work at her aunt and uncles donut shop when we were much, much younger!😅 My favorite donut is called a Boston Cream. Like the Maple Cream but with chocolate frosting. And I've been known to cook my bacon and sausage with maple syrup! 😋
Wow...Denz is "not feeling' it" or "meh" on nearly every single donut. Might be the first time I've ever seen a young lad who didn't LOVE every donut he tried
Heck ya! Fritters! I used to buy 2 of every flavor then fill the rest in with jelly or custard filled yumminess. Blueberry, strawberry, and Apple fritters are my favs. Pineapple is right up there too. I’m pretty sure that’s why I’m now a diabetic. Lol
I’ve taken family members visiting to VooDoo, but for Portland, Heavenly Donuts is my #1. In Vancouver, Wa it’s Mr Maple. Now that I live in Seattle, it’s Top Pot Donuts. BTW! 9:20-9:28. Dads reaction is classic when responding to moms question. 😂 His shrug says it all. It’s states, “Everyone knows this”
Correct. powdered sugar donuts are also called 'cake donuts'. They contain baking powder as the rising agent. Regular donuts, like glazed, bars, and filled ones, use a yeast dough.
Try some Hostess Donnettes (mini donuts) comes in several flavors (Powdered, Double Chocolate, Frosted, Old Fashioned, HoneyBun, and Crunch). You can find in gas stations, super markets, or places like Walmart or Target. Childhood nostalgia!
There's a place near us called Annoula's Taverna that offers "Annoula's Waffle" which is a waffle with strawberries, bananas, a scoop of vanilla ice cream, crumbled bacon, maple syrup, and whipped cream. Soooo good...
I live in L.A. but I've been to that Portland location before. Several years ago, a major corporation flew me to Portland for a couple of days to attend a special event. When it was time to return home, I asked the limo driver if we could stop at Voodoo on the way back to the airport. He said, "I think there's time if you get me one of those maple bacon donuts." I was happy to oblige.
My absolute favorite at Voodoo is the Memphis Mofia. “Fried dough with banana chunks and cinnamon, topped with glaze, chocolate chips, peanuts, and chocolate and peanut butter drizzle”
If you make it back to the states, especially the south, you've got to try thick cut smoked candied bacon. There are recipes online, so might try at home. If you have a smoker, I would suggest asking your local butcher shop for about 1 inch thick pork belly.
The two donut shops of note in California, that I’m willing to vouch for, are Stan’s in Santa Clara for their glazed and maple bar, and Donut Man in Irwindale for their Glazed Strawberry filled and Glazed Peach filled seasonal donuts.
The Voodoo in San Jose closed quite a few years ago. It was supposed to be renovated but was vacated instead. The Dead Elvis was my favorite. There's a chain called Psycho donuts that I like as much. But no nurses. They've also experienced some closures as well. Good donuts.
Voodoo is definitely up there as my favorite! Glaze is tasty, dough is yummy and fluffy, but without that weird fried aftertaste. That’s what makes voodoo different than a normal mom and pop place.
And finally, at the end of the video, we observe the NZ family on a collective "sugar rush". Love the reaction of the kid's vs the adult taste buds. I see the next Atlanta Kitchen video taking shape.
Black Forest is cherry and chocolate. Next time you are in Portland, try Blue Star Donuts. Much better imho.
Yeah, blue star is much better
Im a Blue Star fanboy as well. havent had voodoo in about 10+ years, lol
i used to have black forest cake as a kid a lot...but it didn;t have cherry because it was all about the gateau chocolate
Has Kirsch too. And that makes it Black Forest. ☺️
@ from Wikipedia: Black Forest gateau, sometimes spelled gâteau (German: Schwarzwälder Kirschtorte (pronounced [ˈʃvaʁt͡svɛldɐ ˈkɪʁʃˌtɔʁtə] ⓘ), literally "Black Forest cherry torte") and called Black Forest cake in the United States, is layer cake consisting of chocolate sponge cake, whipped cream and cherry fillings and toppings. The sugar rush at the end is hilarious! 😂🤣😂
I love how joyful your family is. You are fun to watch. By the end the sugar high was hilariously apparent.
The apple fritter looks delicious but I was spoiled with my grandmother's homemade apple fritters. And her homemade cinnamon buns.
Sometimes the specialty donuts aren’t all that. The real test is what their general Glazed Donut tastes like.
I say the same thing about vanilla ice cream. People think I'm crazy.
YES
Glazed donuts or sugared donuts are a great test for a donut shop's quality.
They will also hold up longer than other donuts too.
KrispyKreame donuts are the best donuts in America
@@JimmyJolly-d8v Can't beat a fresh out-of-the-oven Krispy Kreme original glaze.
It's always amusing to me when I fly out of Portland to see the pink boxes get on the plane.
Yes!! The maple bacon donut is AMAZINGs, but so are all of the others.
I remember as a teenager going to punk shows at the Paris Theater next door. When the show got out you'd go next door to voodoo to grab a doughnut, back when it was the side door that could fit 4 people tops

I call it glaze when its wet, and frosting when it has dried. Im from NY. 😅
"It was raining in Portland..."
Shocker!😂
Proof it's Portland.
In the US, glaze is mostly sugar with a splash of milk and a few drops of vanilla and is translucent or transparent. Icing is more like frosting
Powder sugar not normal sugar and most glaze don't have vanilla in it really
Icing and frosting are synonyms... They are exactly the same thing.as a noun, and as a verb also the same.
@jreyman I think of frosting as pretty close, but a bit thicker and fluffier. The texture of the chocolate icing on the donut, for example, is not exactly the same as what you would put on a cake. Maybe that's just me. I can see people using the words interchangeably, though.
Watching this always brightens my mood.
As a native Oregonian I personally think they are a bit overrated. Taste they are as good as any other mom and pop donut shop
tell me what your thoughts on!
@dustinhaba3700 I live in Eugene where they have a location and I just personally think they taste the same as any other location. They got their reputation from great marketing and making a few unique flavors but I personally don't buy my donuts from them. I'm going to eat if someone brings some
@@buhnerboy1974 I'm from Eugene, too, and they have the same quality donuts as Winco has. Absolutely agree with your assessment.
@aaronlevitz4984 I usually go day/night on 99 or Dizzy Dean on 11th
Blue Star was always my favorite over Voodoo tbh. Voodoo is famous for innovation, but Blue Star really focuses on flavor.
I have always liked the Bavarian Cream (custard filled chocolate glazed), Bismarck (raspberry or lemon jelly filled sugar or white glazed), glazed croissants and the good old fashioned Maple Bars.
The apple fritter needs a few minutes in the air fryer. Magical 😂
Hopefully while you were in Seattle you visit Top Pot Doughnuts which in 2019 was vote America's top doughnut chain.
The sugar high kicking in at the end was hilarious!
Hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas
Someone jumped the gun. 09:54 Atlanta's "Quit talking and eat already" face made me smile. 😆

Bacon on a Maple bar... It's one of those "it sounds strange, but just try it" things.
It’s such a great donut
NZ fam on sugar rush is hilarious! 😂
Wells it’s not surprising compared to other western countries. They definitely didn’t need 12 to be on a sugar rush with USA donuts
The first time I tried a maple bacon bar with chunks of bacon on top it literally blew my mind. I’ve always been a glazed old fashioned, apple fritter maple bar fan . The only time I ever tried Voodoo Donut anything was a craft beer. Fun video guys !
Atlanta's Black Forest Donuts, a million dollar idea. Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy New Year.
Sorry, but Black Forest donuts already exist all over the place. Google it. They even sell them at Wal-Mart. And at Tesco’s in the UK.

@jkingston5498 I know! It was iconic
I really like your traveling in the US content and find it very entertaining! I rarely sub but your family deserves it , keep it up !
Happy New Year, NZ Fam. 🍩 🍩 🎉🎉

The sweetness of the maple brings out the bacon flavor and vice versa making a salty sweet explosion in your mouth. That's why it is sooo good.

Denzel trying the banana cream donut 🤣🤣🤣 Then everyone when the sugar high hits 🎉 So good! Thank you 😊

NO, Salt n Straw creamery in Portland has combined maple ice cream and candied bacon bits …. Come back! Portland misses you yah weirdos!
Love the video-Alantas tried the Maple Bacon doughnut until something gave😂❤

Not sure, but i believe powdered sugar donut batter is different, and makes a drier crumbly textured donut. Possibly no yeast used.

The last part of the video 🤣🤣🤣🤣 best sugar high I have ever witnessed! 🙂👍👍👍👍
I used to live in downtown Portland.. and I would get a dozen maple bacon bars just about every other week. So good.
not fair - I am watching this video when none of our local donut shops are open 😫😫😫
Yummy. 😋😋😋 Hope you had an amazing Christmas. 🙏🏻

I've always loved a good sugar raised donut. I could never eat more 1 donut but I could devour 15 donut holes no problem 😂
Maple bacon with salted caramel drizzle❤❤
