It fits with the whole bullying-is-cool gratuitous-bigoted-nastiness-will-make-me-top-of-the-schoolyard ethos + method of the Russell Davies era.. Along with casting a leathery macho poser as the Doctor at all, + his bullying of Adam, since when nobody on principle should be a DW fan until Eccleston deservedly gets retconned out of having been the Doctor, into really being the Master nicking one of the Doctor's lives. It well shows that bullyjng + bullying-based cool are racist + always on racism's side. 5 years before, Russell Davies had been on a "TV hell" countdown show laughing the famous vandalising of Blue Peter's garden in 1983, mocking all the serious caring reactions made at the time of it, + calling the derisive thug bully reactions of enjoying vandalism the right + natural, ones. Out of that nihilist sewer came NewWho's racist + bullying toxic start.
This is an example of a often overlooked, but still brilliant episode. The writing was nothing short of amazing (Dickens in particular being captured exceedingly well), the monster of the week was disturbing enough, the set pieces were nice, and the way this episode paves the way for Torchwood with the first appearance of the Cardiff Rift, and Gwyneth's importance to Gwen Cooper, is just played out so well. How did Mark Gatiss go from writing brilliant episodes like this, to writing god-awful episodes like Night Terrors, Robot of Sherwood, and Sleep No More?

I'm pretty sure Gwen claimed her to be a distant ancestor.
+TheSkully343 she did.. when the Doctor and Rose saw her in Journey's End :)
