I can not even begin to describe how powerful that last moment is when he drops his head. It’s almost as if he wanted his memories to be taken because he had suffered too much pain, too much loss. But in this moment he realised he could never forget and that he would have to live with it for the rest of his life. Worse still, he could never share it with anyone. In this moment he is truly alone

It really is a beautiful and sorrow-filled moment, because if I remember correctly, he was replacing the girl as the sacrifice. He was offering himself and his memories in her place, fully knowing he wouldn't coming back from it. He was ready for the end.

Or he truly was hoping, to finally, meet an equal. Someone, anyone, just someone who could share his anguish, relish his memories, cheris all the love, feel all the loss, he has seen and felt, done, decided. Finally meet someone who could bear the weight of his mantle, bear the weight on his shoulders, just even for one second, even for a moment, that, so that, for that one moment. He wouldn't have to feel alone.. be alone... in his thoughts.
I wonder how that feels, oh, I already know.
edit. oh, I guess, now that I read your comment fully, I see. You saw the same sadness in his eyes, something about it ring to you as far too familiar? so hence you were quick to recognize it?

@@Sin_Of_Greed That is why Clara is the absolute most powerful companion he will ever have. Because she is there in his thoughts. She's not his love. She's his teacher. And like all the greatest teachers of all she refuses to give up on him. That is his burden. Thus Clara has all the time in the universe to teach him he has not yet failed her.

The Doctor had fed the parasite his past memories. While those memories were 1200 years of life, it was nowhere near infinite. But that single leaf contained the wishful thinking and grieving of every possibility of love and happiness and life that could have been. The past has happened and is finite, but the possibilities of the future are innumerable and unmeasurable. In this case, it was literally the thought that counts.

It's just upsetting that the only male hero that does things with his brain instead of brawn, now has female counterparts. I have no issue with time lords being male or female. On the other hand, sometimes they have to try to see things from his point of view, which is always difficult considering he's had more than a dozen incarnations and lived at least 100x the typical human lifespan, which as Indiana Jones said... its not even the years, its the mileage. Just don't mess with the Whovians, please, we're really nice to you until you insult one of the actors or stories or show.

When Eleven was being born, he fell from the sky and answered a scared little girl’s prayer to be saved. He was still forming, and so he formed himself into her protector.
And here again. Even now, even still; standing between a scared kid and her scary monster, offering himself in her place.

The worst thing is the amount of insight and dread in his speech. He know that he will always be doomed. Doomed to watch everything die and be forever and always alone. And at that point - at that scary moment - Doctor Who tells the audience this: "I mourn you all, I mourn all the losses and dead innocents. And it is my fault. I could not save any of you. Blame me. I failed you all."

I remember at least 1 producer leaving the show (Forgetting his name) he was outraged that a 27 year old was the new Doctor. He said "The Doctor can be young in appearance but the actor should be old enough that you believe he could be king of his own Universe" Of the many things that makes this so iconic and special this scene really leaves him with egg on his face. 1 of the reasons Matt was Cast was because he embodies an old man in a young man's body perfectly and this is the best example of that. So powerful 👌

@@elduquecaradura1468 Well put 👌 Especially as Regeneration became an expected thing for the Doctor decades ago most of the Classic era Doctors if not all had a silly and child-like side to them even if it wasn't as common for them to show it as often as in the modern era. Matt's biggest inspiration was Patrick after all. As old school as a Doctor can be and known for a sillier side than Hartnell. The Doctor travels the universe and picks companions he can see it all vicariously through because The Doctor wants to see things that put even him in a state of Child-like wonder.
As much as 10 and 11 mean to me it was refreshing that 12 was more of a Classic Who Doctor in age but he still puts his own spin on let's say the Doctor's "Timey Wimey " side. I doubt anyone wants a Doctor who constantly acts his age

If you see that way, the way the doctor drops his head is an act of resignation and acceptance that the burden that he carries it is only his to carry - no parasite planet can take it from him - it is not all bad, it is not all sad and we seen during his adventures the ways that he found not only to cope but also to find unique joy - , but it is heavy nonetheless - heavy to a point that his head drops once you seen that it is not longer being taken away from him by the parasite planet . Just memories that will never be full comprehended but at the same time can all be empathised with. This is by far my favorite Doctor Who speech. Very powerful. The emotion in Matt's voice and passion in which he delivers it. Masterpiece. It never fails to give me goosebumps and choke me up. I feel people often overlook Eleven, which is a shame. He embodies the very essence of the Doctor. He's whimsical, quirky, fun, kind, chaotic, broken, angry, and even a little dark. He has layers much like the show itself. This speech along with David's 'So much more,' and Peters, 'Can't I just lose', sum up who the Doctor is. A broken tired old man who sacrifices himself time and again for everything and everyone, and he does it alone. Doesn't do it to be thanked. But because it's right. Because it's kind.

Eccleston was the most obvious tbh, from the very first episode you can see the pain of the war. He's violent, so much more-so than Tennant and Smith
in the 50th Bad Wolf refers to 10 as the man who regrets, and 11 as the man who forgets
While i cant say it as a rhyme, 9 was the man who searched.
He was the aftermath of the War doctor losing his memory of the events other than the decision to use The Moment, he had just regenerated out of the horror of the war and the decision he had to make and was lost even more-so that War doctor was, the entire story really was him trying to find his way again, which lead into 10 having found himself once more and thus feeling the impact of his actions even harder and 11 having suffered the emotional pain so long simply tries to forget.

He’s tired of all the heartbreak and loss he’s gone through his long life. He just wants to rest and stop going though all that pain. But he knows that if he ever does eventually die, it will mean the end of everything eventually and countless lives will scream in pain. So he keeps living through all that pain and experiencing more and more pain and loss, so no one else has to.

One of many moments where Matt Smith shined as The Doctor. One of those moments where there was no doubt at all that he was THE Doctror. One of those moments where you had to think.... Soon hes time is over, soon a new face will take over and we will lose this great man as The Doctor. Lose the Raggedy Man... The Raggedy Doctor. Oh how i'll Miss Matt Smith as The Doctor. I know when David Tennant's time was over i couldn't help but think ''This will never end well''. But Matt Smith was just as good if not better. And this is one of those moments that makes me think that maybe he was better? That would in wich case in my book make him the best Doctor. I don't know... But i do know that the fact that hes gone now makes me a bit scared again. This time a little more then the last... We are going from the youngest Doctor to the Oldest Doctor. That will change the series in a lot of ways... I just hope the change will be good. I really hope that the age does not play as big of a part as i've been thinking it's done. I hope the Age is just a number as they say... HAHA! No matter, Thank you Matt Smith! You where a great Doctor! And this is one of your greatest moments! Makes me want to rewatch the series... And that is saying something. I just spent one month watching the entire (New) series from begining to end. In one Month i turned from a young lad that didn't think Doctor Who was anything more then a Geeky crap show into a true Whovian. And i want to watch it again so soon... That hasn't really happened whit many seres before. HAHA!

@@mr.d6493 Matt Smith has more raw talent than Peter Capaldi.
Capaldi was always overly rehearsed, trying too hard to get everything right to the point where he lost authenticity. In some cases, he even committed to a bad idea. I'm still pissed off with him for being a self-righteous hypocrite in the "You let me down!" speech. He undermined a moment that was intended to convey how much he cared about Clara by trying to make her feel even worse about herself than she already did, especially when he snarled "Cut out the whining" right in her face, even though she hadn't said anything whiny throughout his entire rant. Give that scene to John Hurt and it would have been perfect.
Smith could just walk onset, do an entire scene in one take, and nail it. The lack of careful rehearsal and overthinking also gave authenticity to everything he said and did. He never looked like he'd practiced it countless times. He looked like he was acting and reacting in the moment instead of coming prepared beforehand. Heck, despite his eccentric mannerisms, you just need to look at Smith's eyes to know that this is a VERY old man in a young man's body. One look could convey the Doctor's age more convincingly than every grey hair on Capaldi's head.

How does it represent the infinite and the Doctor cannot? just because she told the God to eat the future of this paper he ate it? I am pretty sure if he was capable of eating the future he'd have eaten the doctor's, in this part it feels like he became capable of eating the "Future" for the "plot".. which is why it's super annoying, treating us like 5 year olds
also, the doctor finishing that Sun with his epicness would have been kinda way more awesome

I guess they were just trying to put in the life as a symbol for possiblities and make it a "magic moment". It's supposed to be artistic and not to make sense. But then again if we are honest Doctor Who isn't really a show about making sense anyway. Half of the solutions the Doctor comes up with are just absolutely ridiculous, but they still work every time XD
This whole memory-stuff actually is a bit confusing. When I watched it for the first time and the Doctor said "Take my memory", I was like "Wait a moment! Does that mean the Doctor will forget his whole life?!" and 2 minutes later I was like "Well, obviously not..."^^
But to be fair: There might actually be an explanation on why the leaf worked considering the stuff we learn in "The Name of the Doctor" (SPOILERS on that episode ahead)
As we learn in The Name of the Doctor, Clara got scattered through time and space to save the Doctor. So she hasn't only lived one live, but probably thousands or millions of lives. So when that Sun tries to feed on her future, it actually feeds on the future of millions of people. And that are probably way more memories than the Doctor could ever offer ;)

    • @DrLeynir
      @DrLeynir 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

GrayFalcony Well, thank you for this awesome reply XD I have to say, never did someone reply to me on TH-cam without being angry XD not sure why, lol
      but anyways..*SPOILERS*
Well, that Sun swallowed that leaf, not the impossible girl and her lives; but then Clara is an "effect" of the leaf, and all that happens to her is because of that leaf...
OK, now think of the effects of the Doctor XD how many lives did he affect? how many planets, how many universes did he save? XD
This is just like the Butterfly effect, we'll keep talking about who did more of the affecting... but no matter how small the effect, it'll keep affecting other things like dominoes until forever. that's why both of them having about equal (infinite/forever lasting effects) should have had the same swallowing reaction by the Sun....
But like you said, Doctor Who's solutions are sometimes ridiculous (probably the writers faults) but I love that and totally accept it, and sometimes I like to find better explanations for things the writers failed to explain because you know, they are humans too, and I think that is part of the experience of Doctor Who.
Sorry for the long reply btw.

It had already consumed the memories of countless sacrifices. Surely one of them had grasped that idea before the Doctor and Clara came on the scene. The idea of Grandfather biting off more than he can chew, by trying to tangle with the last of the Time Lords of Gallifrey, simply has more emotional impact to me than Clara holding up a leaf.

    • @madpolitico

I was never a fan of Clara being so overly important, but I think that was meant to be part of the long-running trend of the show to suggest that humans are so much more important than they think they are, which is why the Doctor's so fascinated with them.

Just watched this back again and someone has got to say what a Doctor Matt Smith really was. The boots that man had to fill and he took it by a storm and really was the old man in a young mans body. When you think of a doctor that has the perfect mix of everything… the alien, the human, the funny, the weird, the serious, the emotional.
    Matt Smith had it all.

I like 12 in a different way. In Deep Breath he started off all awkward and it was a bit painful to watch. Then he left Clara behind to fend for herself which 11 would have never of done. I was well on my way to not liking him, but then, at the end he pours the robot character a drink. And in that moment he became a Doctor I wanted to know better.
I still feel like he's finding himself, though. Or maybe the writers are still trying to find him. From a character standpoint it makes sense since The Doctor spent a thousand years in his 11th form. From a writer's perspective it still makes sense since the wrote for Matt Smith for three years and now they are having to re-discover adult vocabulary and mannerisms.
But so far, I like him and I'm looking forward to the next season.

The 11th doctor is so emotional. He is by far my favorite doctor. People think that he's just a big goofball or a child. His childishness is just a façade. The 11th doctor is scary and he is a monster and he is in pain all the time. Have you seen him when he is angry? It's terrifying. He has lost so much, seen too much. He is lonely. He used to have a family and now all of it is gone because he had killed everyone he once new. It's so sad and terrifying and I just love him so much.

Yeah, after losing Rose, Donna, Amy, and Rory and the Year That Never Was and all the reminders of the Time War and what he lost there he just wanted to hide from all the pain. So he grasped hold of that childish joy and giddiness that he always felt with Rose when they were exploring and adventuring with everything he had. But it didn't really work. All that pain was still there. Probably why when he regenerated again he ended up as Capaldi's doctor, jaded and kinda bitter.

"I saw the birth of the universe, and I watched as time ran out, moment by moment!"
that line reminds me of the fandom, and how we view Matt Smith's Doctor. He was our everything for a long time, and when we saw him for the first time in the show, at the very end of The End of Time, we saw the "birth of the universe" so to say. In Christmas 2013, we watched as time ran out for him, moment by moment. until nothing remained for us that night. No time with him and, no space in which he existed. Just us.

I had cried when I first saw this episode. Matt Smith had really proven here that he was born to play the Doctor, giving the character the emotional appeal that has brought even more people into the world of Doctor Who. His speeches as the Doctor has brought the world to tears with his words and gestures that give more passion into his words. His last speech... right before his regeneration... his speech of never forgetting his past faces and the times his past faces had experienced. Tears were pouring the day Matt Smith passed the torch of the Doctor to Peter Capaldi.

My guess is that this was real, raw emotion when Matt was giving this speech and that’s one reason why this speech is so powerful. Plus, if you think about it, this speech isn’t just about the Doctor’s pain, in fact everyone can relate to this speech in some way. There aren’t universes with laws devised by mad people but there are countries here on earth where people have devised horrible laws.

Alex Sikar because the Doctor doesn’t like bad endings. He doesn’t want people to make the same mistakes that he made. That’s why when he froze Gallifrey in a pocket he was very happy because he prevented his past self from killing everyone.

And by fracturing herself through time and space, she made a significant amount of "scar tissue" in the universe. So it wasn't a large amount plus infinity, it was a large amount plus another large amount.

Personally I really like the leaf thing on a metaphorical level - the infinite potential of a life unlived outweighs even the longest life. Okay.
But IMO the really interesting thing is that the parasite god ate stories. And what Clara did is feed it the *story* that this leaf represented the infinite potential of a life unlived. And once it accepted that story and took it into itself? Then there was no way it could possibly digest it.
