BMW N42/N46 4 cylinder engines have no DISA . The DISA issue is present only in 6 cylinder engines ? ?

Yeah, another reason they are underpowered

@WayToManyAssassins I've got a n46 engine and yeah it's not fast but I wouldn't say it's underpowered mine definitely doesn't have problems getting up to speed

@haydensteinz2268 It's underpowered in the E90 cars, it runs ok with higher octane fuel but still slower than most 4 cylinder engines out there

There's not one video on the entire internet about bleeding the cooling system on these engines

I saw this video before and it doesn't allow for the thermostat to open nor does it show how to do the higher bleed screw beside the oil cooler housing. But thanks anyway.

@@dhalsim-1 There is a BMW TIS (technical information system) instruction but it isn't worth following it. The BMW original procedure is annoying! Just fill it up and let the engine run until the big coolant circuit opens. Then open the highest screw for bleeding until some water comes out. I think you maybe need to remove some housing for having access to the higher screw, i don't remember exactly. Then let the engine cool down and fill up the coolant to maximum again. Done.

Had the VVT problem, hard to figure out, also watchout for it's sensor and the gasket of the sensor. It's kind od poorly made, wasn't able to tighten mine and it leaked oil and threw out a code (system too lean on bank 1)

The most expensive issue on these is valve stem seals. and its bound to happen.

Clogged Pcv plus faulty oil level sensor can lose you an engine so look out for that.

greetings, I own an e46 with N46 1.8 and 116 hp, I have never had a single problem, it has 305,000 km, it works perfectly, there is no smoke from the exhaust, the consumption is 7.3 liters. but I'm planning an e90 also with N46 2.0 and 129 hp, or maybe a diesel M47 with 122 hp.. please, stay with the e46 or which one should I choose between the two engines in the e90 that I mentioned? thank you

Have a N42 engine and some of the issues have come to the surface mentioned in the video. One thing these engines don't like is low quality oil and skipping timing chain replacements. Vanos systems go bad cause the spring inside the vanos unite will not retract and can lead to camshaft timing being out of alignment. At least the third generation valvetronic had the issues fixed that the first two suffered from. I may do a more detailed video since I now have tons of experience to share.

@@wonderwalls3565 it's a forum, not a mechanic's workshop, there people talk about things that happened, because they destroyed that engine themselves, I currently have 315,000 km, and I've never had a single problem with the n46, because I maintain it well.. oil change every 7000 km , all filters, the most normal driving, no mistreatment..

I think i have problems with Vanos Solenoid now. While driving seems like transmission and engine shaking bad. I got error for missfire on cyl. 2 and ignition solenoid 2. Is there other solenoid then vanos?

@@diyonlinegarage How is it a good engine.
      Valevetronic issues.
      timing chain system issues.
      stem seal issues.
      seal leaking oils.
      water pump failures.
      thermostat failure.
You could say the last 2 are generl maintenance things, but they are so hard to access on these engines.
