Hi Scot!! Excellent show!!! The joy, the energy you put into this video (and many others of course) is just amazing!!! Great records : King Crimson "Red", Mahavishnu Orchestra "Birds Of Fire", National Health, Harmonium, Museo Rochenbach, Eloy, Big Big Train, Rush "Moving Pictures". So glad you mentioned one of my favorite bands: Fairport Convention although I think only the first five albums have something of prog like "A Sailor's Life", "Sloth" or the great "Matty Groves" !! I like Quintessence too but I think it's much more psychedelic than prog. Jethro Tull I agree with you they have a lot of folk but much more blues and rock (even hard rock!)!. "TFTO" by Yes was the most expected choice and indeed it's a good album(not my favorite but who really cares??!!). See you my American friend!!

Oooh! Could spend hours discussing some of the concepts mentioned here but I will say that, in terms of progginess (and I am the sole arbiter in these matters. Sorry, Scot and Andy's Progometer. I don't need a machine. I just know. 😁) I have always considered Egg (in the Canterbury subgenre) and Gentle Giant (in whatever category progarchives has them) to be the proggiest bands (not necessarily the best, but the proggiest) Anything considered Zeuhl must also be in the extremely proggy category. Now you know!

Excellent video Scot. I am still a bit torn as to why we need so many "sub genres". Who came up with them, and why? Are we supposed to box up our music and assign one of these to them? I remember Court of the Crimson King had no "prog" label at the time of it's release. Ya, I think it's safe to say that I seek great music and don't much care about the labels. I'm 60 years old, so I guess I'm officially "old school"

Not only are they my favorite electronic music artist but they're also my favorite music artist of all time. But personally I would have chosen Rubycon. A much proggier album methinks. Mate, where's progressive pop! Arguably the most influential song writing album in contemporary music is Laura Nyro's revolutionary, complex and conceptual 1968 album Eli and the Thirteenth Confession {"it blew everybody's mind" Todd Rundgren). Only perhaps surpassed in pop progginess by her 1969 album New York Tendaberry, for me the artistic pinnacle of modern songwriting. Its also about the singing.

    • @TheProgCorner

Too many "subgenres" for me. I just call it all "prog", or in the case of bands that hold the middle ground between prog and classic, melodic rock, I prefer the term "art rock" (The Moody Blues, Alan Parsons, 10cc, BJH, and more recently Downes-Braide Association)

I agree with you regarding Prog-Metal, that the best album is OCTAVARIUM by Dream Theater.
A curiosity: it is striking that several prestigious rock music critics, such as Pete Pardo, consider the title track (IMO a masterpiece and probably the band's best song) a weak song.

Well since Jethro Tull didn't fitt any of those categories, you must not consider them prog. They've got 2 of the greatest prog albums of all time, so it's hard to see how they didn't make any list. And when it comes to yes, I do love their music. It's they're singing I can't stand. I don't particularly like bands that have very high pitched singing . Although some of them have really superb music, if they had singers with a little bit deeper voices, I would like it a lot better. But in the end I always like your shows..Keep up the good work

Bands like Led Zeppelin, The Who and artists like David Bowie were as prog as it gets, every album different unlike today's so called prog bands. We classed them as prog back in the day. Yet you don't include them. Prog archives are correct to include them. Tangerine Dream and especially Klaus Schulze, as progressive as it gets.
What is prog these days, bands like Big Big Train are not prog. Looking backwards is not progressive, the true meaning seems to have gotten lost in the last twenty years.
Oh and yeah, Dream Theater are great but they aren't prog, not in the original sense. Most of these aren't prog really.
Sorry, very old git just having a moan.

It is super prog to separate things into endless sub genres but Im with Fripp on his definition. He says he's a progressive musician not a prog musician. For me prog is just something that is used for marketing the work of progressive musicians. If its very prog Ill probably dig it but how I evaluate musicians is purely how progressive they are musically. One is genre, the other is an attitude towards music. Love Birds of Fire and yeah some slag Rush for being so tuneful but Moving Pictures is a special high watermark for musicianship and songwriting. Prog can have both if the right progressive musicians are involved.

Interesting Exercise. Both picking my top ten categories and an album from each. I agree that sometimes the Prog Archive's designations seem a bit arbitrary. You made a lot of great choices. I've really been getting into Canterbury and Italiano of late so those two genres have climbed my list, I've even separated them out from my general collection to have their own shelves. I'm giving this a quick off the cuff attempt, not so much the "proggiest" as my go-to choice in my favorite categories ranked.
    1. Canterbury - Caravan's In the Land of Pink and Grey
    2. Symphonic - Renaissance's Ashes Are Burning
    3. Psych/Space Rock - Pink Floyd' Wish You Were Here edges out Nektar and Hypnos69
    4. Progressivo Italiano - Le Orme - Felona E Sorona
    5. Neo Prog - Pendragon's The Masquerade Overture
    6. Heavy Prog - Uriah Heep's Demons and Wizards
    7. Crossover - Procol Harum's Whiter Shade of Pale
    8. Electic - Van Der Graaf Generator's H to He, Who Am the Only One
    9. Prog Related - Ambrosia's debut edges Zep's Houses and Sabbath's Master of (Clearly I love a lot of the classics here. Really my sweet spot but is it prog?)
    10. Proto Prog - The Doors or Who's Next
Fun exercise that would likely yield wildly different results tomorrow. LOL

Good program! But I think too many subgenres compromised your ratings. On one hand, you're ranking albums that aren't prog. For example, "Birds of Fire". While fusion might be related to prog, it sounds different and has different roots.
On the other hand, I think you missed albums comprised of serious prog. It's hard to get proggier than Gentle Giant, for instance, but no GG albums came up. Best, RS

Interesting idea for a video! Yeah, the ProgArchives genre system can be a little wonky sometimes, though I isially get why they have the categories they do, the boundaries are a bit fuzzy so putting every band in exactly one of them doesn't really work. (Probably my biggest annoyance in how they categorize it is the fairly common misconception that Triumph is a prog band, rather than a band that's mostly pretty hard rock/AOR standard with a few dips into proggier territory on specific songs, leading to a lot of negative reviews from people treating it like bad prog as opposed to reviewing it on its own terms. I dunno, just because they're a three piece band from Canada that started putting out albums shortly after Rush did doesn't mean their music is all that similar. Maybe to their first couple albums but not past that. Anyway, that's a bit of a tangent.)
I'm not all that familiar with Indo-Raga, but if I had to guess based on the name, it sounds like it would be prog with a heavy influence from Indian classical music. By heavy, I mean that it would probably be mostly bands actually from India who are more familiar with the nuances of how that music works, rather than just throwing in a sitar playing something vaguely exotic and calling it a day. Which, not to get too much on a soapbox, but I feel like that it has an unnecessarily uphill battle to getting any widespread attention from other countries due to subconscious biases, but might be a lot more prevalent in India. Though honestly I'd he really curious as to how that would sound, actually... That said I've never heard it, so maybe I'll look into that at some point!
As for the categories I'm more familiar with, you did a pretty good job picking those! While the whole post-rock category isn't really that "capital P Prog" as you say, Lift Your Skinny Fists is just a fantastic album. And kudos for mentioning The Road of Bones - that was the first IQ album I listened to, and it's still a favorite of mine. I have tried a few of their other albums, but mostly other later ones like Dark Matter, Frequency, and Resistance, and The Road of Bones is the one that I keep going back to. I should check out some of their older stuff too, sometime.
Speaking of which, a random idea I had that could be interesting, would you be interested sometime in making videos (maybe shorts even?) in the vein of "if you've never heard this band before, here's what to expect and a few recommendations for where to start with them"? Because a band's most successful albums or songs, or ones any one person deems their best, may not always be the best introduction to their music, and you've made comments to that extent on occasion before. And with prog there are a lot of bands and specific substyles that just don't have much recognition outside of the specific genre, so that sort of resource could be very helpful to someone just trying to get into their music. I say a few recommendations mainly because there may be different albums or tracks that serve as better entry points to different people based on what they're already familiar with. I get it if that's a bit vague of an idea, or if you're not interested in taking video suggestions from random commenters, but it could be neat all the same.

Nice move including Amon Duul II's Yeti. It's a great example of how early Pink Floyd influenced German progressive rock music as a whole.
If anyone has an interest in folk prog, then the two most progressive bands in this genre are definitely Comus and Dust Mountain. Both bands are closely related to King Crimson in terms of being dark, eerie, innovative and highly eclectic and original. Both bands can just as easily fit into Acid folk, or Pagan folk rock; Comus being acoustic, Dust Mountain electric and more rock slanted. Song to Comus and Hymns to Wilderness are albums worth checking out, especially if you're daring enough to pay Blair Witch Radio FM a visit. Scary stuff, disturbingly addictive!
