Farewell to the Greatest Show On Earth!
Once it closes, they should donate the passenger cars to museums, but the flatcars could probably be put to good use in freight service.

Thanks for Danny in getting great footage of the circus train. Who knew that the elephants were the glue that held the circus together. Soon the crowds dwindled and the circus disbanded. This is special to us railfans. Thanks, Danny.

I've seen it several times. Always impressive. I was lucky enough to see it when it still had the locomotives that were painted to the train scheme. However, always lead by, in my case, one or two union Pacific engines for a total of three or four engines.

  • @gravelydon7072
    @gravelydon7072 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

Small problem with the use of "doubling". Doubling is actually the splitting of a train to get a job done. It is not the combining. An example is is when you have too much train and not enough tractive effort to make a hill. The train is split with the first section pulled up the hill and parked in a siding, taken to the terminal yard, or left on the main and run around. The locos then go back and get the section(s) that was (were) left behind with the brakes on. Then the train is taken up over the hill. Once the grade is low enough for the loco(s) to handle the two or more sections are again combined and move as one train in most cases. It meant that you had to make the run up the hill twice, doubling the hill. payment for that was extra mileage and or overtime. If the terminal is close enough, the train may be split and moved to the terminal without being rejoined. In the circus train's coupling, it is more correctly called assembling the train.

Danny, what stands out the most for me, is your beautiful voice and the way you express yourself. I call it an announcers. Also the camera work is very good. Since I’ve worked in advertising on Madison Avenue for many years, I’m surprised some documentary companies or advertisers have not asked you to narrate their commercials or documentaries. Or have they? Frank

Thanks Frank! Those are very kind compliments. Nope. I haven't done much outside narration for folks. But I don't use an agent so I'm kinda hard to find. I'm just glad you enjoyed the show. It means a lot coming from an Ad guy.

Hi Danny. I'm a relatively new Baldwin, FL resident. I lived mostof of my life in Greensboro, NC. Spent lots of time trackside on the NS Washington Atlanta main, the southern loops and Saluda. The RBBB train tied down on the Lindley pass track while in Greensboro right behind my elementary school, and ive been hooked ever since.
I also caught the circus train that day leaving Jax at the Chafee St crossing. Sad to see it gone, especially since one of my good childhood friends rode it for years. He was a circus clown for 11 or 12 years in the Blue unit back in the 80s n 90s.
Anyway, i just discovered your videos and love them. Ill keep an eye out for you up n down 301.

I have done that in time lapse before on things you can never do again. I thought it would be fun to watch me install a tile floor. This one time I planned ahead to make sure nothing would bump the camera, Pluged into the wall etc. blocked it off so no one else could bump into it. etc. about 3/4 done I walked over to check the camera and kicked the leg with my foot. It was not like I was going to pull up all the tile and start over again. :)

PeTA and the hell-cursed ASPCA's legacy! The circus proved IN COURT that the animals were NOT being mistreated or neglected but the damage was done. The ASPCA was even given a hefty fine which, to my knowledge, they NEVER paid one cent of. To this day I refuse to donate to anything these two money mad, greedy bastard groups are a part of! My college used to charter trains to go to the away football games, taking the team, the band, and fans. I often thought about that experience, being together with people who are united around a common cause for a few days, with the railroad making custom themed menus, the band having concerts at some of the stops.
I got to ride on the band/cheer plane a few times to go to basketball tournaments and football bowl games, and while it was awesome, I think a train would have been better.

Very cool S signal. The circus passenger car trucks really jumped out to me - anything special with them? I didn't realize Baltimore was a State (CSX Company cars). Are Maryland officials aware of this? :)

Three years in, any idea what happened to the cars on the Circus Train-other than the engines of course!

Is the "Limited Approach" (Red, flashing yellow, red) aspect used very often? I've always seen in videos where a signal guards a 45 mph turnout, it's always given a medium approach, instead of a limited approach.

Great question. It totally depends on the layout of the track in the area. A 45 MPH turnout would likely get a Limited Clear, but if there were another switch up ahead, another crossover or junction or just a holdout signal , it could get a Limited Approach.

Ohhh ok! I did a little bit more research and it also kind of breaks the whole "Slow down to medium speed for an approach" concept.

I am a bit curious, what is 'cold' in Florida? I live in Missouri and it is cold when the temperature drops below freezing. It is sad to think that there will be no more circus trains. It had been started in the 1800s and was an event for each city that it visited. There was a small rail yard where they unloaded in Hannibal, MO and they would parade to the fairgrounds. it drew a lot of people and they flocked to the circus tent city.

I think anything 45 or below as cold. 50 if the wind is blowing.
