Hi Russ. Thanx for having this very important video as a bunch of folks just care about sharing their footage and Not the inner workings of the Telemetry and keeping our expensive toys safe for another day. I am still learning at 55, lol, but am grateful for folks like yourself willing to still teach us older dogs new tricks. Thanx~

Holy Cow Russ - I have been watching ever since last Christmas when the Mrs. got me a Pro - Great lady. Lately my drone has been acting up and I was
concerned - I had a fly away and within 5 seconds it was going away from me like a spoiled brat in the store. It took off and I wasn't touching the controls.
I saw it was dropping down near trees and I hit the RTH !!!! Thank God it stopped! I remember you always saying " Take the time to do the RTH. I even do it when I do a battery change. So the next 5 or so take off's I didn't go over 10 off the ground. I noticed when it would hover, it would slowly rise a ft. or
two. It was the IMU ! Thank you so much for the tip to the recalibrate IMU...… it saved the drone but I am still gun shy and take my time when I launch.

Thank you so much for bringing precision landing to light Russ and for the shout out ! Very well stated and articulated. I’ve had a ton of comments on my video where I accidentally discovered it was missing. Thank you for bringing a positive message not only about precision landing but all you do for the drone community. Definitely sharing 👍🏻👍🏻😎😎

Excellent vlog! Glad you did return to the issue of precious landing when you did because you are now able to offer a perspective that all the other TH-camrs did not; the confidence theme. B/T/W, love the bloopers!😂

Hey Russ! Like always you provide valuable information. I've had my Mavic 2 Pro a little over a month and had issues with calibrating my IMU. Lets just say placing the drone on the port side first verses the starboard side made all of the difference. Thanks again. Two thumbs up!

Thanks for the great and informative video! Interesting to know about the IMU affecting the location accuracy as far as landing as well as giving a false high wind warning often. Thanks for making things easier for the rest of us! I also agree with you and Bill the Drone Reviewer about accurate landing especially for the many people who cannot walk or cannot walk far. Thanks for everything you do for the Drone Community!

As always, a lot of great information here. Also, remember, if you go to another location that is a good distance from where you normally fly you may have to calibrate the compass also due to the magnetic declination change from one location to another. We have to do that all the time with our M210. Even just a couple of counties away will require it.

Thanks Russ - Great video as always. I had a cheap copy of the Mavic Pro as my starter drone and had it just zoom away and lodge itself 20 metres up a tree on its very first flight. It took a week to get the equipment together and get it out of the tree! It did that when I pressed the RTH button (I have no idea where it thought its home was?)! I fully agree with your comments about being able to rely on RTH and precision landing when you are new to Drones, as that gave me so little confidence in the Drone, I boxed it, put it in my loft and saved up to buy a real Mavic Pro. It was such a relief to see my new Mavic go through the correct and expected motions when I pressed the RTH button and to have it fly down to exactly where it came from. It meant that I could get on with learning how to fly it without wondering if I needed tree climbing equipment again ....

Thank you for the IMU Calibration. I first noticed a need for “something” when the Pro would drift ever so slightly to starboard. Even when I watched my use of the right stick carefully, the aircraft still drifted even if but a minute amount.
Next, I noticed when using RTH, (yes, I use RTH, I like it, and yes, I can fly by the map insert) that the aircraft wouldn’t land exactly where it left terra firma from. Close enough, but increasingly becoming less precise.
Today, flew out to a lighthouse over water (it does work, keep your altitude at 50’ or more) and I received a rather stern warning of high winds, and to land ASAP. This took place at sunrise, there is no wind at sunrise! Incidentally, I was receiving wind warnings more and more frequently.
These circumstances are your proverbial “sign”. Best to heed them if you are attached to your aircraft.
Performed an IMU Calibration. Lifted off, gained about a hundred feet in altitude, and 25 yards away from home point, and executed a RTH. The aircraft landed to within an inch or so (by visual reference) from the takeoff point. That’s what it did brand new out of the box.
So, if others are experiencing these issues, I would proffer that 51 Drones is onto something here.
Also, to ensure my table was level, I bought a $4 level from a major home store. The level checks both axes simultaneously. I keep that level in the carry case in the event I need it out in the field.

Confidence... That's my man! I crashed my drone (M Air) and I think the IMU was the problem. For a small amount, DJI sent me a new one and It fly much better. With my first, I was getting the motor and high wind errors messages. None with the new one. After my first crash, I was very insecure but with the new one, confidence is coming back. :) Take care Russ

    Mr. Russ,
You certainly lead the pack in quality tutorials for people like myself - a true newbie.
Concerning your comments at the end of your video about what computer to use, I am a
advocate of using a desktop with a large monitor. I have a Dell Desktop with a 27" monitor for viewing. I found out that many of the laptop viewing screens are not color corrected with any
consistency. I learned this after trying to do post processing of still images with Adobe
Lightroom. Try it yourself, Russ and see what a difference a large screen in Image quality.

fyi- i'm totally new to drones so what I do to learn is use the RTH feature and when it is about 5ft. landing I simply cancel the landing and take over to personally land the drone. So far it works for me and it gives me practice on landing. The RTH feature is great in my opinion to at least get it in the line of site and very near where I launched.

Good video! I did the the same thing the first time I calibrated my first dji drone. I can think of a few situations where precision landing would be necessary. Even though I'm pretty confident in my ability to fly home and land, it would be nice for the Mavic 2 to do it too with precision.
Hope that update comes out soon.

Thank you for all of these videos Russ. I'm learning a great deal from your videos and others too. My Mavic Pro will be here in a couple of days so I'm trying to be ready. Loved the bloopers at the end. Thanks for a good laugh. Now if my old brain can retain all of this information. My brain is much older then olddogg60 would indicate. :-)

I loved this! I need all the info I can get to determine my next purchase. I want a phantom, so even though you are mavic, it helps me understand why to do preflight checks, and make sure I am correctly flying. I will be purchasing early 2019. So if you have any insight, let us knot.

Hello Russ, As always I continue to learn from your videos! You were my first drone channel I found and started watching. I purchased a Mavic Pro after watching several of your videos. I am hoping I can move up to the Pro 2 sometime next year, fixed income. Again thank you so much for keeping us with the "older" technology in mind for your videos. I would love to see one on your PC. I currently have an older Toshiba Qosimo, an older I7 and have yet to try to edit videos. Still trying to find the right software at a fair price. Don't think I could continue to spend a monthly charge for Premier Pro. Loved your blooper reel as well. You make things fun, entertaining, and informative. PS btw, I had my Congressman call me yesterday on the newly passed FAA Bill. He was looking for more information and my thoughts on it. I feel he was impressed on my knowledge on the bill, a big thank you for that as well. He said he would keep me informed as the new procedures are being set up and would try to fight for us hobbyist. Better late than never I guess. Again, Thank You for all you do for us Drone pilot!.

I am nearly 66years of age and have been using/ building computers for about 39 years and flying drones for a few as well, have three DJI models ie Phantom 3 Pro, Mavic Air, and a Mavic 2 Pro. My Pro 2 doesn't have Precision Landing BUT still, it lands within an inch or two of where it takes off from. Great Drone !!! Bob. Ps Now am going to sell the Phantom and the Air as the Mavic 2 Pro doe's everything that I need it to do.

Bob, look for the firmware update (it may auto-load and you might visually miss it)
Anyway, it's supposed to fix the precision landing feature.
I only have a Spark, but you can check dji forums.

That IMU, Compass, and Vision positioning calibrations are so important. Also, it would have been great if you dunked the ball. That was cool though getting the ball in on the first shot.

Hi Russ. Brilliant opening scene, really demonstrates the point. Just a small point regarding your comments about leaving the props on during IMU calibration, I think DJI advise removal as a safety precaution in the event of some sort of “hiccup “ . IF the drone did fire up it would damage itself at the very least. For the sake of x seconds removing and replacing the quick fit props I would always advise caution. I also advise starting the controller first before the drone so you have control should it suddenly decide to take off. Don’t mean to preach but some youngsters may experience problems and it’s always good to minimise risks. Thanks for taking the time to make the video, looking forward to the next. Take care and catch you later.Peter

Good points. I would point out, however, that although they suggest taking the props off, that the illustrations on the app show them on. 😁

Fair play....bit of an own goal there on DJIs part I guess. Just waiting for my MP2 Pro to arrive & can’t wait to see how it compares with my “old” Mavic....liked your idea of tracking one drone with another, might give it a go when the great English weather improves!😂😂

I think you're right with the precision landing. It should always be there and I hate that it's not there for the Mavic 2 and I really hope they will add it. I have even more problems: The drone sees the dronepad as an obstacle when I try to land and drifts away from it all the time
