Hello from Japan. Just wanted to tell you that here in Japan we use the damp duster to absorb water, like on the bathroom walls after a shower so that there is less build up or on the kitchen sink after the last rinse at night. Here it has been always marketed like that. Love your channel.

Love the attitude! Whole house doesn’t need to be super clean all the time or even most the time. Vacuum frequently if you have kids and pets (this I try to do daily as both of us have asthma and we have a dog) and clean as you see it. I clean my sink & tub with baking soda & simple green and a sink brush. The toilet same but with toilet brush. Simple green also works on floors and walls. It doesn’t have harsh chemicals like formula 409 that make me cough (asthma) and if I want smell goods I use the Boulder disinfectant cleaner that smells like rosemary. Right now I’m also working on using up a bunch of cleaners that were left in the house we bought a bit over a year ago. Too frugal to throw away.

FYI: There are no harmful chemicals in Magic Erasers. They are just melamine foam that is slightly harder than the gunk you want to remove without being abrasive enough to damage the surface you're trying to clean. It doesn't release any chemicals, it just wears away from use due to friction.

Dawn, oh how you have helped me the last few years. I’ve felt like a prisoner in my own home due to the clutter & chaos. 15 years ago we moved to a new house-we only had about 25% of our belongings inside-I told everyone we didn’t need the rest of the stuff and it was so much easier to keep everything clean(I was onto something but didn’t know it yet). Well I lost that battle against my hubs & 4 small kids. Fast forward to a new home that is less than 1/2 size(were in 5b/3ba 3800sqft now 3b/2ba 1600sqft). We have been busting at seams!! I started with 2 dumpster loads & many truck loads of donations. I’m now seeing daylight at the end of tunnel. I’m about 18 months into this. I should be finished this month!! My mental health had been struggling, but that’s improving too. Thanks for the inspiration & introducing me to Cass & Dana too!! Thank you again!

Dishwasher pods don't work because they skip the prewash step. Try a powder detergent. Fill the wash and the prewash, run the hot water in the sink and start the dishwasher. Ideally, put your dishwasher on the hottest settings (hi-temp/pots and pans). That should get your dishwasher working just fine. Technology Connections has a couple videos about dishwasher detergent.

My cleaning motto is, "Clean more often, clean less hard." And it's true! I know routines don't sound like fun but once you develop them, it's easier in the long run. It works for frugality too because you don't have to spend more money buying special cleaners because nothing really stays stuck on et cetera. Has anyone else found this out? I do realize not everyone loves routines and cleaning and there should not be shame in that of course! If I didn't love cleaning so much then maybe I'd actually get the painting done like you do so well, Dawn!! Speaking of painting, do you all use a special edger between the ceiling and the wall or just regular painter's tape and a brush? I'm trying to decide if it's worth it to buy a gadget and painting is not our expertise ;)

@Juliab Yes yes yes, this! I actually don't love to clean, I love to have cleaned. And that's why I am doing myself a favour and do it regularly so it doesn't become a big hassle.
I use dish soap, vinegar, soda and glass cleaner to clean every single thing and spot in our home. On top of that I use a natural scrub once or twice a year when I do a deep clean when the seasons change. There is really no need to have a huge amount of specialized cleaners. I treated myself to some nice cleaning cloths I like to use, but I aso use old cut up shirts.
Perhaps one day I will reach a point where I love cleaning like you do 😆Not all hope is lost.

I deep clean 15 minutes a day 5 days a week. This includes decluttering. Everything in my house is decluttered and deep cleaned once every two months ish. I have an index card for every room in my house. I list all the things that need to be done starting from the ceiling working down towards the floor. Every day (Mon -Fri) I take an index card spend 15 minutes cleaning whatever I have listed on the card. When the 15 min is done I stop and the next day I continue working for 15 min . When one index card is completex I put it on the bottom of the stack and continue with the next card. It doesn't take long because as you said the more frequent you clean the easier it is. Also the more I clean the more I have decluttered and the fasted hou can clean. I really don't mind cleaning now.

    • @Conval-wi5eh
      @Conval-wi5eh ปีที่แล้ว

@@juliedewyse8436 That is so type A and I LOVE it! 😂
I might be stealing this concept for when we have a bigger home. Right now I do a very thorough clean each week in one room. It comes on top of the usual chores and usually only takes an extra 20-30 minutes, the rooms are rather small. My definition of deep cleaning aka spring cleaning (I usually do a second "spring cleaning" in autumn) is to fully empty all cabinets and closets, wipe them down (using the scrub for the kitchen cabinets) and get everything in there clean by wiping it down, washing it or running it through the dishwasher. I wouldn't want to do this every two months. But the 15 minutes deep clean a day sounds very family friendly, if you are a person who thrives with routines.
Do you complete your regular chores, like cleaning the bathroom, on the weekend?

I bathe my dogs with it! It kills fleas on contact. I use it for upholstery, leather. I mop with it. No rinsing. I use it as a spot cleaner on clothes. I clean my shower and sinks, tubs and toilets by putting it in the hand held refillable dishwashing sponge and scrubber. I have one for each bathroom and one for the kitchen. I like using spray bottles from the dollar tree. I actually have the same kitchen countertop as you, Dawn. I use a little Dawn dish detergent in fone bottle and fill it up with water. That is also my all-purpose cleaner. Then I love the brown bottles of Lysol concentrate. We use 2 cap fulls
in another spray bottle to disinfect the countertop or sink after raw meat. I use baking soda to scrub stove glass top for deep clean. But normally, on the stove top, use Dawn spray, followed by 50/50 vinegar/water spray bottle. The best to clean glass stove top is a 4" razor scrapper from window cleaning supply company like J.R. Racenstein. Also, blue surgical rags by the pound make the best cleaning rags and dish drying cloths. No lint. We are professional window cleaners 35+ years, and these supplies are an added bonus of our business that have found their way into our home's regular routine.

I have a degree in chemistry and I’m allergic to a lot of artificial fragrances (and some natural fragrances) so I love coming up with super simple cleaner solutions. So many people talk about Dr. Bronzer’s but as a soap, it has a high pH and is very basic (opposite of acidic). It doesn’t do a great job where an acid would do better like with the soap scum in the shower. I prefer to use 7th Generation Free and Clear Dish detergent instead. It’s plant based, has zero fragrance, and has a more neutral pH, works just as well as Dawn Dish-soap IMO. If I want an acid paste, I mix it with powdered citric acid, if I want a basic paste, I mix it with baking soda. (Also, as you discovered, washing soda and baking soda are different chemicals). Here are my picks:
All purpose: Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day in Lemon Verbena (doesn’t make me allergic!). I use it for counters, floors, and even my carpets!
Acid: Powdered citric acid. I mix it with water as a vinegar alternative since it doesn’t smell or make a paste for tough jobs like calcium and rust build up.
Disinfectant: Isopropyl Alcohol in a spray bottle (also good as a solvent for markers and some sticky stuff)
    Microfiber cloths
    Brillo pads
    Plastic scraper
    …and that’s pretty much all I use.

My favorite combination for cleaning is the 1/2 dawn, 1/2 vinegar recipe I got from Dawn! I am amazed at what it will do for my shower. I use Norwex microfiber cloths and water for most everything else and do not have to worry about any cleaner build up over time. I am trying to use baking soda and vinegar more. I just scrubbed the inside of my washer with vinegar to get the hard water off, and now it is sparkling! I try to be as absolutely minimal about how many cleaners I have. The scents are nice, but bother my family, so it is nice to know that clean doesn't have a smell!

For cleaning the oven (and the baking trays in oeticular) I reacommend the "Prowin" ovencleaner. It literaly just whipes off. Like a miracle and like a commercial. It is amazing. I noticed you do not war gloves while cleaning - I do not either, BUT you have to, if you decide to give it a try. Otherwise it will remove your skin as well. So it is probably not good for you, but it works so great. I hate cleaning the oven (and trays), but it makes a huge difference. I just cover the tray in a thin layer cleaner (just wipe it on), then i put at trashbag (or foil) over it and let it sit over night (i do it in the evening) and the next morning I can just wipe it off. NO scrubbing whatsoever, even the burnt in stuff. But do remember the gloves. Itried the pink stuff and even though it smells nice I have to scrub WAY too much. So had to share. I have a selfcleaning oven now, but the trays I still have to clean by hand and is such a huge help. Can't recommend it enough. It sounds like a pain, but it realy is not and it is so satisfying, when it justwipes offlike in a commercial. Sorry for the long text. Thanks for the great video.

I recommend a rubber-bristle broom. It is amazing on floors and carpets, getting up cat hair and dust when you think the surface is already clean. You can also run it over upholstery. As a bonus,it is a scratch -free alternative to remove powdery snow from your car. Dollar Tree has just started selling the broom head to go on the broom handles that they sell. You've been motivating and encouraging me to do the cleaning I've been putting off because of back pain. Perhaps the best advice for me has been to do a little first. It may seem like you're getting nowhere, but soon those tiny changes for the better motivate to keep going and tackle longer/larger jobs. No guilt in doing only a little ... not thinking of it as a start, but in and of itself worthwhlie.

So my oven gets cleaned about once a month and oven pans everytime it is needed (almost every time I use them). I hate cleaning. I know I’m never going to feel like doing dishes or vacuuming etc, I just do it right away. This way it doesn’t bug my mind.

Hey Dawn, here's fun suggestion for the upcoming garden season. Grow a luffa plant. My son grew one last year...warning... they do grow well and will easily grow 15 feet long. Ours grew over a garden and tried going up a tree. I pulled the vine off the tree. The luffas were about 18 inches long. Once they are mature, you peel off the skin, take out the seeds an clean them up. I didn't think much about it, but we ended up using them as bath sponges - wonderful! Then by chance there were some ends of one luffa and I just threw them in the wasing machine and started using them to wash dishes. It's the best non-scratch pad I've ever had. It has a pretty large weave so nothing gets stuck or stinky like a regular sponge. Bonus is that when if wears out, I'm not sure how long that's going to take as I've been using it since last summer and it hasn't changed a bit, anyway, I can toss it into the compost when it's finished.
I'm going to try the pink stuff because my oven... Thanks for the video. You're the best!

Just some info for anyone who wants to make the baking soda paste - washing soda and baking soda are not interchangeable. They are two completely different compounds - washing soda( sodium carbonate) is caustic with a pH of 11 and should not touch skin. Baking soda (sodium bicarbonate), of course, is edible and used in baking. The pH is only 8 and will not burn skin.
You can only make a paste easily from baking soda because the granules are very fine. The granules of washing soda are large and slow to dissolve, and it will be discouraging to try making a paste. So if interested in this idea, use the right product (Baking soda) and it's quick to mix up a safe paste that won't scratch surfaces or be toxic if it can't be rinsed well. ❤️

So, I love the way the Dawn powerwash sprays evenly and for that alone I wanted to continue using the product but I did feel like I was being duped into buying something gimmicky. For laundry, I used various ecological detergents for many years and in the past year or two, discovered “Eco egg“, and it’s so easy and works and I just love it! I have also used “wash nuts“ I think they’re probably called. (I live in Germany, so I’m used to the German names.) They are a nut shell from Australia, with saponin in them I think.
Neither of those give a scent, which is generally fine for me. Weather permitting I often hang my laundry outside of the fresh air to dry, which is the best scent of all :-)! Sometimes I do add an essential oil like lavender. Or tea tree oil or baking powder for extra cleaning or disinfectant properties.

A really nice product review, Dawn. I like that you stated it doesn’t make us bad cleaners if we don’t find using particular products helpful or we skip cleaning / don’t clean as frequently certain areas of our houses. Anyway, I also love Scrub Daddy sponges and The Pink Stuff. We have Fairy Power Spray in the UK which is the same as Dawn. If you want to get the staining or crusted stuff off the bottom of your pans so they conduct the heat better, I find using a low density pumice cleaning stick rubbed in a circular motion works (don’t use it on the inside of the pans on the non stick or ceramic coating as it will damage that). Btw if you want a great leather deep cleaner I recommend HG Deep Cleaner for Leather which I use on our sofas, which you can buy from Amazon for £10 (UK price). Also if you want to reduce and condition out a lot of the cracks in leather I highly recommend Sheraton leather balm it is amazingly good.

I like using the DAWN power wash. When i'm cleaning something that I've cooked in, I will give it a spray, let it sit for a minute, and then continue washing and it works really well. Plus, I sometimes use it as a counter spray with a sponge to clean my counters and it cuts through anything greasy or sticky really well. I like that it doesn't spray too much dish soap but just enough.

A game-changer for me is Maker's Clean scrub squares. They have two sides and have just the right amount of scrub with no scratch, and I use them on EVERYTHING in the kitchen except the floors: Dishes, counter-tops, stove, appliances. The second one I use in the bathroom. On tub, sinks, and counters. I am 68 years old and not easy to impress. 😅

I have been making my own dishwasher “detergent” for years. Borax, super washing soda, and kosher salt. Add citric acid separately when running a load. Put some white vinegar in the door well and run. The nice thing is it works best if you don’t use the heat dry, so you save energy as well. Another benefit is that you don’t have the nasty residual chemical smell.

A little while ago, the lady from 'she holds dearly' encouraged listeners to decant cleaners into pretty amber glass spray bottles and to buy 'pretty' cleaning tools (e.g. wooden handled dusters and brooms). The premise was that it would look nice if left out and add joy and beauty to mundane tasks. It totally worked for me! A cleaner had to really earn its keep if I was going to take the time decanting it. Also, the amber bottles look so much more beautuful than a fluorescent plastic bottle if left out on the bench. Now I stick to whatever labels are on the amber bottles instead of trying new cleaners.

I use bon ami for everything -- and non toxic and dirt cheap!! I also use a pumice stone (pummie from a hardware store) to get off stains and quick stove top cleaning!

I am new to your channel. I clicked on it because I saw Pink Stuff paste in the thumbnail, and I was curious what you had to say about it (mine has been sitting on the entry table for a week, still in the waterproof wrapper). Then you said "Clean with me," and I *got off the couch* and cleaned the oven door with it. It took the entire length of the video, and a lot of elbow grease, but it's 95% better than it was! And the Pink Stuff worked better than anything else I've tried. Thank you!

Add a few drops of your favorite essential oil to unscented cleaners and they can go back to being your favorite. ;) I add lemongrass to my dish soap, lavender to my laundry and pink grapefruit to my homemade rinse aid in the dishwasher. Those little bottles go a long way and they are very inexpensive at Hobby Lobby for how long they last. You can also use your regular dish soap (1 part soap to about 15 parts water) in a spray bottle to mimic the Dawn Powerwash without the harsh chemicals. If it is really tough, sprinkle with baking soda, spritz with your watered down dish soap and come back about 30 minutes later and the gunk usually wipes right off. A lot of products can become miracle workers if you add in dwell time. Just apply, set a timer, go watch TH-cam and come back when the work is done. ;D

Ecover dishwasher tabs work great. We have used them for years.
