  • The cars of Boise have been subjected to yet another round of "dirty rain" and this time Yvan Lacroix was in town to experience it. Of course, "dirty rain" means that there are a ton of cars to be cleaned, and today's filthy Ford Mustang GT was no exception. In the spirit of competition, Yvan challenges Anthony to a faceoff: The traditional soap & water car wash method using Koch Chemie KCX Gentle Snow Foam (GSF), versus Optimum No-Rinse rinseless wash.
    So, who won? Which method cleans better? You're just gonna have to watch to find out!

    I’ve been using ONR for clay lube, drying aid, water spot cleanup, etc, but never tried a full wash with it until today and guess how I’m cleaning my 5 appointments tomorrow? ONR BABY. Can’t believe how easy it was and how well it did even with some bugs caked up on my front bumper. Washed my car in 20 minutes.
    For maintenance washes I see no reason to pressure wash a vehicle anymore.

  • @SittingWithDogs

    I love both methods. I actually do a pre rinse foam the lowers & wheels and ONR the rest off the car. I get great results but I’m not fighting water spots & getting water into every crack & crevices that I end up getting water spots from or even ruining my coating application

    I use ONR or ONRW&W 99% of the time nowadays as it has proven itself for me. But if my cars are really dirty I do like to pre-wash it using 3D Pre-Soak and a foam cannon. And if I'm doing a decon on them I will usually do a traditional two-bucket soap wash preceded with the foam cannon.

  • @nomad509
    @nomad509 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    Why not use both? My wash process starts with a ONR presoak to remove most of the contaminates, a water rinse followed by foam applied from a Marolex pump sprayer and then a soap bath. For extremely dirty areas I throw in some Green Star. The wash mitt glides in slickness over the surface for that ultimate glossy clean look! If I had access to a pressure washer, I'd jump straight into a foam cannon, but I generally use a Worx Hyrdoshot for most of my washes.

    • @nomad509
      @nomad509 ปีที่แล้ว

      @KrisClean hey Kris, I just saw this notification. I am an apartment dweller currently so I don't have access to my pressure washer so limitations with water exist. A good presoak with products like ONR and KCX GS are very helpful. I just find ONR helps for surface lubricity for soap washes when foam cannons are not a part of the process.

      I use both but a little differently. I live in a condo (no hose) but live near a wand wash. Starting at the wand wash, I bring my own pump sprayer (iK Pro Foam 2) and pre-soak with traditional car soap foam (DIYDetail Incredible Suds), then pressure wash with the "spotless rinse" water. Then back at the condo, I pre-soak with ONR with the pump sprayer, then 2-bucket wash with ONR. So the only mechanical contact occurs after pre-soaking with both soap and ONR.

    I like rinseless for those quick in between main wash washes. Just to keep things nice and shiny. However for actual regular maintenance "deep cleans" I still prefer soap. Particulary for my multi-stage washes I like to first foam pre-treat with a high activity foam like Bilt Hamber Touchless or Auto Foam (into which I might add some Green Star, or Bilt Hamber Surfex HD). Followed by a 2 bucket wash with something like Carpro Reset or Descale, Koch Chemie GSF or Reactivation shampoo. All that followed by a properly lubricated towel dry with something like a Beadmaker/Dream Maker mix, Avalon King Armor Shield Lite, Shine Supply Punch-It, DIY Detail Ceramic Gloss, and many more...Then I sit back light up a stogie and stare into the infinite abyss of nothingness and meaninglessness for 5-10 minutes...

      I like to pre-rinse because it knocks all the big stuff off the car. Just foaming can leave the dust and pollen in the foam, then your wash media rubs it into the paint. It just seems safer to rinse first since the pressure washer is already out.

    I've been using ONR for years. I live in the UK and honestly there are instances where ONR does not remove the road oils from the paintwork where a soap will. I've had to repeatedly go over a panel 3 or 4 times with ONR to remove the film that soap would emulsify in one pass. That's the only downside to it. That's where a pre-wash comes in that emulsifies 95% of the grime on the car.

      @@martin05916 Don't feel too bad about missing the N-914. It is a fantastic product. However, while N-914 does clean harder to clean oils etc. it DOES NOT seem to provide the same level of scratch protection. ONR uses polymers that surround the dirt particles and remain even after an area might dry. Shy of the user being relatively careless those polymers coating the dirt do help protect the surface. N-914 uses a surfactant that while feeling slick and certainly helping, does not seem to protect on quite the same level. I am a FAN of both N-914 and ONR. I have and use both. The fans of each camp will not budge an inch on the other it seems. Because it works so well for the most part, the N-914 guys can't seem to recognize that slick solution does not automatically mean top tier scratch protection. The ONR folks struggle sometimes to recognize how easily N-914 can clean things that may take extra effort with ONR. Most soap people can't grasp that with a rinseless wash, your towel IS SUPPOSED TO often pick up dirt that might still be encapsulated in the remaining water on the car surface and that is actually *just fine* - even good. There are so many adherents to various systems that won't give an inch on anything else. Don't automatically mistake "slickness" feelings as always indicating the measure of actual protection. If it's oils I want to clean, OR I am washing just before applying a last stage protection (LSP) product, I reach for the N-914. If it is dust, etc. the ONR is the go to. They are both great, but while the ONR is not as potent breaking up oils, I am not convinced that (despite the slickness) the N-914 protects as well (or gets the particles to drop in the bucket nearly as well - yes, I do one bucket and the ultra black sponge). If your car is in need of the soap - just add ONR to your soap (I also love to do this) since it can protect your car from a potentially more harmful plain old soap wash (more harmful because the traditional wash involves the same thing as a properly done rinseless- wiping dirt off BUT with a "slick" product that lacks the scratch protection of the best rinseless products). In other words, even the N-914 is awesome for a number of things, no worries. The fact that you have ONR should cover your bases plenty well.

      I rinseless wash my own cars and occasionally for money. The sponge cleans the emblems very well due to its “fingers” via the cross cuts. You also CAN use the pressure washer during a rinseless wash, or any hose. They showcase using a pre spray method here but you can absolutely use a water rinse first.
      Also for tight areas , a detail brush just like during a soap wash works great!

I'm just trying to work out my routine in my head before. As of now I'm thinking of doing a "dry" presoak with the rinseless, agitating crevices with a detail brush, hosing off the presoak, and going in with the sponge from the one bucket.

      @@theragcompany yeah but an immersion heater is cheaper than those insanely overpriced buckets.
      I get that there's convenience to be had there and of course if you have warm water that you want to keep warm and just move on with your day, or travel with a gamma seal or whatever then fair enough, but I really really just can't justify the cost of the buckets when there's no way they cost any more than 3 regular buckets at a HUGE stretch.
      If they priced the buckets around the $20 mark at most then I could justify spending the money on a couple, but they're nearly double that cost and then marked up on top of that usually.

      @@theragcompany gotchya, appreciate you editing your comment. I agree with your second paragraph and I've tried to think about why that happens. My simple theory is that we're all trying to find something that we can relate to, and the majority of people simply can't relate to someone who's washing their car with a $40 bucket. Some of us don't appreciate that, and some of us wouldn't care if you washed your car with a gold plated bucket. Human psychology is an interesting one

    So the pre-treatment would be the same. Application time of each type of cleaner is the same. Wash time is about the same. You skip the rinse, point in favor of rinseless. But the rinse is the fastest step, so you only save maybe 60 seconds. The rinse will be mineral-free, so no hard water spots. But you can rinse with a few gallon jugs of distilled water, so the benefit is not clear to me in a situation where you are equipped. You need a drying aid with the traditional wash but I would use one anyway in both cases because I like those kinds of spray on-wipe off products to finish the car. Mobile detailing is probably the best use-case for rinseless but I'm not sure it's a slam dunk for someone fully equipped.

      A quality soap cleans and is far slicker than any rinseless on the market. Fck the "fun" part. Now if your goal is to be quick as possible (if your into detailing your own shit, your not tryna be done as quick as possible) then rinseless is your go to, sacrificing paint safety of course.
