When I saw the title Action 53, I thought it was the sequel to Action 52. Though the game is mainly based off of the game Streemerz in Action 52.

This game is surprisingly well optimized:
Look at the detail in each screen. There's a high number of detailed tile sprites, a dark blue plaid background, a high-speed grappling hook, animated ball sprites and smoke effects. And only the player sprite flickers.

So Action 53 was originally intended to be a remake of Action 52 by several homebrewers, where the games are actually good. Streemerz is a remake of the inferior game Streemerz found on Actoin 52.
Wow, I'm honestly impressed by this game. It plays very much like a modern platformer where you don't have lives and there are checkpoints after every challenging part. It's very ahead of its time, there are more similarities between Streemerz and a game like Super Meatboy or VVVVVV than Super Mario Bros. or DKC or pretty much any platformer at the time.
It's a port of an indie game originally made in Game Maker I believe from a project called "Action 52 LIVES!" You should check out their Non-human game as well, although it looks more like a snes game.

This is from a game called Action 52 OWNS, where they took the concept of Action 52 games, and imagined them in an alternate universe where they aren't shit.
I'm not a big fan of Mike's but he clearly has the best thought process for problem solving when gaming, like he always gets the right strategy for parts other people are like "dafuq I'm suposed to do here". I actually feel kind of identified with that, happens a lot to me :p

Action 52 was originally supposed to be 60 games in 1 rather than 52. The number of games was dropped from 60 to 52 due to cartridge space constraints.

I wish James and Mike would play more genesis games, or sega stuff in general, I'd love to see them play a good saturn or dreamcast game. I would also like to see them play Splatterhouse Wanpaku Graffiti for the famicom, I think they would enjoy it. Also there is a game called sweet home for the famicom, it's an RPG by capcom that was the inspiration for resident evil!

Mike, have you considered getting four people together and playing Bionic Commando Rearmed? I HIGHLY suggest trying it for a James and Mike monday. The multiplayer is amazing, and tons of fun.

is it just me or does that game seem really good!?! the difficult but instantly respawning thing in these types of puzzle platformers reallly works keeps you in the zone..... an indie pc game called VVVVV is very similar
