So glad you guys figured out some of the more cryptic bits on your own. Here’s a few others you might not have known: 1) You don’t really need to punch/hammer the sides of each room; just the front, top, and bottom. 2) In the point-and-click zones, press Start to cancel any undesirable “Go” or “Tools” press (figured that one out one time when I accidentally hit Go in a room with no doors, and would have been stuck as I hadn’t placed my ladder). 3) There are actually three additional bombable secret rooms, each contains a zombie looking dude who gives you an extra life. How do I remember all of this? I literally played through the whole game in the time it took to watch this video.
Yes! There were some legitimate, unscripted AVGN moments from James, especially in the second half. I get the feeling we're going to be seeing The Nerd take vs The Goonies in the near future...
You are not supposed to punch the ceiling, floor and corners of the room. The punch is only used for hitting the middle wall at the center of the room. You do this primarily for getting key holders and bomb holders. The hammer you use for hitting the middle wall to find hidden doors and safe's. It is also used when hitting the ceiling and floor, in order to find ways of using the ladder. Then last, you use the magic glasses to find invisible doors and safe's. No need to hitting the sides and corners, as it only takes up a lot of time you should'nt be wasting. The game get a lot funnier to play, when you follow the above steps.
Unless that is explicitly explained in the manual, why would anyone think that? Why can the hand or hammer be moved all over the room, if they only work on the center part, as you claim?
It was very frustrating to watch, and even more so that they don't seem to get that the fist is for finding items and the hammer is for finding doors, and they never hit the side walls just the ones in front of them.

I remembered the character and the yoyo-weapon and had some vague memories about the levels and the evil grandmother that talked to you in cut scenes but it wasn't until years later I've finally found out it was Goonies II.
Goonies 2 and zelda were both problem solving games, that's what made games in the 80's great. Metroid one was so hard, cause you were constantly learning new things, and we didnt have the internet to tell us what do. I remember going to school talking to people about how to do this or that, or this kid in school learned how to move gravestones or rocks to find secret passages. Goonies had naive type puzzles and I thought that's what made it really cool, but yes I understand the frustration, but I also loved the Goonies movie and that helps. Think it's cool you guys chose this game to play, cause it's a good adventure but tricky.
I am super nostalgic for this game. It was one of those games I had as a kid that no one else I knew had, and every time my friends would come over to play Nintendo they always wanted to play it.
14:34 I recall the reason for all the 'cryptic' stuff in early Nintendo games was to force kids to get their parents to subscribe to Nintendo power magazine. It would have the clues to solving the impossible mysteries on this game and Simons quest etc.
This is one of the best J&MM episodes. Getting a supersized episode like this was a real treat, and the ending part with Mike trying to beat the game was the icing on the cake. "Mike was able to beat this - it was agony." 😂
9:05 when you enter the doors and hit "go" you're supposed to look at the direction Mikey is walking in the bottom left corner. If he's facing away from you, then you press up so he walks straight through the door. If he's facing towards you then you want him to go down into the next set of doors (which can't be seen). It takes some getting used to, but after a few tries you get the hang of it.
Right? Were they high? It wasn’t the easiest game in the world but my bother and I figured out the logic behind the three dimensional sections at eight years old... it’s not rocket science.
Yeah, this one is frustrating to watch. Around 52:30 I can tell what shape the maze is even without knowing what buttons he's pressing, so it's weird they can't figure it out. To be clear, there are definitely elements of bad design here. It's weird how the directions on the maze flip. Hitting the old man 5 times to get the candle makes no sense, even by the standards of the day. But it's not *as* bad as they're making it out to be.
I rented this game once, just one time... and for some reason, this game has burrowed directly into the nostalgia center of my brain. It's right up there with my memories of Zelda, a game I owned and played habitually for years.
@@BaconSenpai They are often oblivious about game mechanics. It was really easy to realise that the number on the top of the screen was for the key when they pick one up.
They should really play the revised version of this game. It fixes all the problems except for the map not being great, though it does add all the pickups to the map.
I loved this game when I was a kid. Navigating the rooms isn’t that bad, you just have to look at which way your little character sprite is facing and have which side of the map you’re on in the back of your head, that way you can figure out which direction you’re facing and where you need to go. I beat this game when I was a kid, but I had to use the Power because there is some cryptic shit going on at times. I rather enjoyed searching every nook and cranny in the rooms, but then again I tend to like really slow paced games where you have to search for hidden stuff. The only gripe that I have is that you should be able to hold an item such as the hammer in your hand until you select something else. Re-selecting it 27 times in the same room gets to be tedious at times, but other than that I really enjoy this game. I sure love the music, and I really like that they included (Goonies R) Good Enough in it. It’s not Contra or SMB for sure, but it’s a damn good and very difficult game.

Haha I remember when I was like 9 and hit the konami man out of frustration. I never beat the game as a kid (go figure). Nor was my English sufficient enough to understand much of what was going on.
With back and forward, all you have to do is remember if you are coming from the back of the map or front of the map. If you enter a door from the front map, you will always face forward and if you enter a door going from the back of the map, you always face backward because you are coming from the back. Once you understand that, it's easy. I love this game, it's one of my favorite games on the NES and is a true classic. It's part adventure part puzzle solving and it can be frustrating but very rewarding when you figure stuff out.
I remember playing this a LOT when i was around 10-12. We made detailed maps on paper, showing exactly what door lead to what part of the map and what walls we had tried to hit, and it still was confusing as hell.
Seriously. This was one of my favorite games as a kid. Along with Castlevania II. It's odd to complain about how cryptic they can be when Zelda had the same problem and rarely gets the same criticism.
Played the goonies 2 at the age of 6 to 10 & more NES games but the further i made it was to Green+Orange Cave (at 32:32 to be precise) where you need the glasses, until i watched a speedrun of the game and then i felt the relief like 10 years later when i finally got to see what to do and hows the ending.. i loved this game and spent so much time visiting the whole areas maybe i had left a room that i forgot, tried so many times but it was just impossible to solve.. also glad i've finished the game on my own, in a pretty decent time, in like 20 mins or something
The way your character is facing is _solely_ an aesthetic design marker to "help" you determine which world-orientation was entered from the side-scrolling part. Separately, to navigate all door segments: imagine yourself in a 3D-Box, spanning potentially even a 3x3 (or even 4x4?) grid-where each d-pad direction is a door. Doors where you hit "down" on d-pad aren't visible, which is a point of confusion. That's it, lol. I don't have an explanation for the occasionally stupid hit-box, however.
@@reoire843 If they just put some kind of divider between the two items and their numbers it would have been fine, these early NES games have some serious jank.
I watch all your content and this is pretty much the best live stream I have seen from you guys. One thing that is great about this game is the music and sound effects! Love it. GOONIES NEVER SAY DIE!
I mean there's a graphic in the bottom left in the 3D parts, indicating which way you'll go. If the character is facing the screen, going forward is represented by down. The reason it's sometimes different is when you enter the room from a different direciton. IT doesn't rotate the room. Maybe they couldn' make the perspective of the room change based on where you entered from due to technical limitations. I mean, it does suck, but they used the graphic of the player in the bottom left to try to help you.. Say you enter the room from the front side. The character has their back to you, and pressing up makes them go forward (through the door). If you enter the room from the back side, the room will look the same as before, but the character will be facing you, and pressing up will make them go forward (towards the "camera").
They just were bad at the game. They took so many hits that I started getting frustrated. And we know that the two have always been bad at exploration. I'd have taken the controller and showed them how it's done.
They are bad at playig games and by now it's obvious they aren't very smart, not even basically smart, unless they're just faking, which I don't think it is. This was useful for the really shitty games, but when it gets into territory of not being able to navigate the fucking screen, then these guys are really the shitstain of humanity.
The reason for the backwards mechanics is because the map has a front and back so you go through the door a certain way depending on which side oh the map you're on
I enjoy watching Mike get tortured by the memories of his childhood.

I genuinely felt stress hearing them saying that the keys do not show!!
The keys are in the top-left corner of the side-scrolling part. :P
IKR wtf are they blind?
there's yoyo as a weapon in Time Commando's future level as well. :)
lol, I'm just screaming at the monitor trying to say the number of keys you have is on the main screen
Oh man, me too! I do have to say it could have been more clear, the number should be placed closer to the item.
@@Carambal81 Either that or have it show 05 instead of just 5
They thought the number that represents the keys was the molotov counter because it was right next to the molotov icon
This is actually one of my favorite Monday shows in a while.
James - "How many keys do I have?"
Me screaming "LOOK AT THE TOP OF THE SCREEN! YOU HAVE 6 KEYS"
Did you even watch the whole video?
@@TheOfficialDaBoogaloo Yes I did. They didn't figure it out for a long time, that's the point.
@@reoire843 If they just put some kind of divider between the two items and their numbers it would have been fine, these early NES games have some serious jank.
Goonies 2 is great! It took me a couple years to beat, because I stayed lost. I just learned the levels. Love the music.
1:18:51 - "I tried so hard and got so far, but in the end it didn't ever matter." ;P
Applies to the end of the video too. XD
True.
My second favorite Nintendo game of all time. I beat it with no walkthrough a few years ago finally.
all of your guys' complaints were never really an issue for me. I thought the game was super fun back in the day
Yeah, like they complain about the map. I never used it!
Well aren't you special?
@@no1run732 your mom thinks so
They just were bad at the game. They took so many hits that I started getting frustrated. And we know that the two have always been bad at exploration. I'd have taken the controller and showed them how it's done.
They are bad at playig games and by now it's obvious they aren't very smart, not even basically smart, unless they're just faking, which I don't think it is. This was useful for the really shitty games, but when it gets into territory of not being able to navigate the fucking screen, then these guys are really the shitstain of humanity.
goonies ii is not bad.
Well it's all opinion man. It's like "Monster party", it's a mixed bag. Some people love it, some people hate it.
Absolutely loved Goonies 2 as a kid!!
It's way worse than Simon's Quest.
holy shit I love that this is so long! thank you! do this more often please!
The reason for the bizarre "facing" mechanics is so they don't have to redraw the rooms.
The reason for the backwards mechanics is because the map has a front and back so you go through the door a certain way depending on which side oh the map you're on
I would love to see a Goonies II AVGN review now.
AWESOME episode guys! I really love this game and I was hoping for years you would do a play through of it!
Pressing "start" to continue baffles Mike to this very day
Love this game as a kid and adult LUL
never had real issues.
There was a Goonies game for the MSX computer system. I played that game back in 1986.
The main problem was The Doors? Jim Morrison has something to say to you! 😂
Spinmaster for Neo Geo is like a cuter version of Metal Slug and your main attack is a yoyo. Rygar you're basically attacking with a yoyo.
Mother also
I had the Official Nintendo Player's Guide, which is probably why I didn't have as much trouble with this game.
I actually printed off a map that I found on GameFAQs, which was how I was able to beat the game myself. :)
Over one hr of Mike and James? God has gifted us
Mike and James have gifted us. Credit where credit is due.
@@JoryStultz1234 Well Mike and James is god.
@@TimSvall We've reached an accord.
Was some of the music used in link's awakening or legend of the river king? Some music is really similar.
You need the 'Official NES Players Guide' for this game.
No you don't, you just have to have a brain and a lot of time on your hands.
