There's actually a reason why Most characters with black outfits were purple on the NES. You couldn't really do characters with mostly black outfits well with the nes color palette, not to mention they might blend in with the background. So that's why.

Couple things: Using the NES Max controller makes dodging Jason way easier, Mark and Chrissy are the fastest characters, so use them to scout better weapons which you immediately trade off to the slower characters, then let Mark and Chrissy keep the torches. The cave and the woods are a waste of time if you actually want to beat the game, and Jason appears way more often at night--if you let him kill the kids, he'll kill them five at a time, if he kills them all, the game's over--so save those "fuck the kids" moments until night three.

    • @WeaponXYZ
      @WeaponXYZ 9 ปีที่แล้ว +19

+Ally G You don't even need to scout for weapons there's a trick to get the match weapon which is the best weapon in the game from the start on day 1. I get it for Mark and Chrissy, then when day 2 comes have mark get the sweater and become my Jason hunter while Chrissy is my number two in case Mark dies, when day three comes you want to try to deal as much damage to Jason as you can outside.
Another tip is the moment you select the counselor you want to start the game, from start to finish the game runs in a pattern which can be memorized to make the game easier.

This game gets a bad rap (and for the map it's well deserved), but I really loved it as a kid. I truly felt like he was stalking me, and when it all came down to the wire, naturally, you were stuck as the slow chubby kid with no throwing power, and shit went insane. I'd end up lost in a cave or out on the lake with night closing in, one kid left, campers crying out for help in every direction. The music would get stuck in my head and even though I dreaded it, I looked forward to playing this game with a friend, handing off the controller and wondering just how in the hell far we'd get this time. It was a shoddily made game, but damn if it wasn't fun in the right circumstances. Good times. And of course we can finally BE Jason in the new game, and get our revenge at last.

    • @JoeServo
      @JoeServo 10 ปีที่แล้ว

For real. I don't understand all the confusion. You're still heading in the same direction. The only time it's sort of, mildly confusing is when you leave a cabin and forget which side of the map you're on, but even that's pretty easy to figure out.

Honestly, I 100% agree with the way they did the map in this game. I'll explain:
They designed the game to be see less. The screen inky cuts away when you are switching paths. There are no loading zones when you are walking on the same path. So you can walk from one end of the camp to the other with no cuts or breaks in the action.
So with this in mind, look at the map and just imagine that when you are at the bottom of the screen, the camera -- your viewpoint -- is located just South of you looking inward towards you, facing northward. Now walk right/east around the camp. When you get to the far right side of the map where the path curves northward, the camera -- your viewpoint -- never switches which side of the path it is on. It is still on the outside looking inward, so when you head rightward on the screen once the path curves northward, you are heading northward on the map.
Now think about when you get to the top of the map and the path curves back westward. Once again, the camera -- your viewpoint -- has still not switched which side of the path it is looking towards you from. It is still looking inwards towards you, meaning that it is facing southward. So when you head right on the screen, you are actually heading west, therefore you are moving left in the screen.
The stage backgrounds even match this. When you are on the north side of the lake, for example, the screen is still looking at you with the lake in the background. It does not show the plain grass in the other side of the path instead.
Therefore, it would actually be *_incorrect_* for the map to work any other way than the way they had it work in this game and is the reason why I agree with this mechanic 100%.

I seriously don't understand why people don't grasp this design.

Once you get what to do in this game, it's much easier. The torch will save your ass. The only place I never really mess with are the secret areas in the woods. This game was definitely creepy when I was a kid, and it still is, but that's what makes it awesome.

  • @benmasta5814
    @benmasta5814 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

The reason the map is "broken" is because its actually not broken at all.
Its because they only wanted to program as few background screens as possible. This means that the backround is always the lake, the mountain or the forest.
Basically if you always want the background to be the lake (and make it feel like you are going around the lake,) then the top parts of the map will make it seem like you are traveling backwards.
This could be fixed by making things mirrored on the top(play probably wouldnt notice). but this was back in old games so they probably didnt realize how confusing it would feel until it was too late to bother fixing.
its mainly because you are using paths of a top down map and applying them to a side view. It can confuse you.

    1) Kill a few zombies to get the lighter
    2) Then jump around in certain general areas for the knife, key and potion to appear
    3) Kill a bunch of zombies to get a machete to appear (optional)
    4) To get the torch - Each character must require the lighter, knife, key, read two notes, light five fireplaces
    5) To find the two notes that are in the cabins with fireplace: One at the lower-left corner of the lake, one at the most north from the cave. Note: you must read them that tells you to go to the cabins
    6) Light all fireplaces to get the flashlight
7)A note that tells you to find the torch is located in the fireplace cabin at the most east in the middle of the map
    8) The torch is located in the fireplace cabin north of the lake after completing "step 4"
    9) Killing Jason's mom gives items: Day 1 - Machete, Day 2 - Sweater, Day 3 - Pitchfork
    10) Axes are located in cabins in the woods, but don't bother getting them
That's it in the nutshell, the rest is killing Jason. Good luck.

Was there a reason James decided to have Mark kneel over while Jason rushed towards him? Mark has great jump control, and can bunnyhop over Jason thus evading his attacks. Also I know this video is over a year old, but some characters have better attributes than others as evident when they discovered that Mark is one of 2 of the fastest characters in the game (Chrissy being the other one). While other characters are slower, they do have redeeming qualities and if placed in strategic locations can be effective against keeping Jason at bay.

One thing I did was use the other characters as bait to get better weapons, like the machete, and I'd pass it off to Mark and Crissy. Then I'd use them. Also, getting the sweater is important. If you can get the torch, even better, but thats rare. I got it ONE time. Killed Jason pretty quickly though.

This is not a bad game, this is a difficult game. The music is great, there's real suspense to save those damn kids and the other camp counselors, you have Jason popping up out of nowhere to scare the shit out of you, there's multiple endings, a map screen that was accurate with a slight learning curve, great day to night transition, characters that had different characteristics, and even primitive 3D elements in the houses where Jason pops up and again scares the living crap out of you. Great game, glad I had it when I was a kid.

I always used to be the only person actually defending the original Turtles on the NES, it's my favourite of the NES turtle games simply because I prefer platformers over beat'm ups, I loved the gameplay, the level design and especially the music. Glad to see Mike feeling the same way or at the very least that he does like it. It's just like Shaq Fu, most people never even played these and others are just hating on the games because 'famous' people are hating on them. I always used to defend a lot of LJN games until you guys made the video actually saying they did have some great games and only then others were starting to say it too. I always hate that online sheep mentality, so many people are just too afraid to like certain games, it's pretty messed up not to have your own opinions. They were more beat 'em up which played itself better to TMNT. They actually features characters from the series. Plus TMNT had some god awful platforming sequences. All that said...I still have a place in my heart for the original.

Yes, I don't know all of the tricks like the speedrunners, but it's not THAT bad of a game. One trick that James and Mike didn't mention is switching counselors in the small cabins to get Jason outside for a battle. Also, lighter > fireplaces > flashlight. Not sure if any of this info is on the directions you had but here's a few other tips for beating this game.
1 Stand on the right side of the n in Jason's name when fighting him, stay still and doge and he has a hard time hitting you.
2 Use Mike and Crissy to get the others a knife by going around and passing the weapon.
3 Leave all but those 2 in the cabins next to the lake to switch to when he attacks the children.
4 Whenever you can, use the cure option with the medicine bottles rather then running out of life, it will heal you more and let you continue to collect them with Mike and Crissy. Also you can't cure yourself, it only works when you walk in a cabin with another counselor in and heal the one there.
5 Getting the Torch is not needed, it's something to do while waiting for Jason attacks, but you can get a machete at random and it's far better.
The main thing is to learn how to fight Jason and manage the lake to make this game a lot more manageable.

What's funny is that it's all there in the manual, it tells you about the Jason alarm and that when he is attacking a counselor you can either reach the cabin OR switch to that counselor directly, beating zombies to find more powerful items, counselors having diferent stats, leaving the slower counselors around the lake and use the faster ones to scout all over for items, getting the torch, the sweater, trading items to other counselorsm potions appearing more often in the woods etc. While certain mechanics are more cryptic/not mentioned (like having to jump to find more items) most of the stuff is all there in the manual. Also Pro Tip: If you are outside and you see the monsters running out off the screen is because Jason is coming, quickly change screens/go inside a building to avoid him, if you fought Jason outside wait a little bit before going inside a cabin/changing screens outside since you have a high chance to find him again (Like what happened to Mike at the start of the video). If you fought him inside a Cabin wait a bit before going out or switch to another counselor.
But yeah I agree despite all these flaws I really liked this game, it gave a nice vibe of being creepy and keeping you on your toes without knowing when Jason would strike, was the best they could do to adapt a slasher film to the NES, really wish we had a 16 bit version.
Talking about 16 bit have you player Clock Tower on the SNES? it was famicom only but to my knowledge it was the only true horror game on the console.

Important obscure rules - in a smaller cabin you can change counselors to play at different smaller cabins throughout the camp. (this is an important rule you learned halfway through your playthrough)
when you scroll to the right or left it's actually clockwise/counter clockwise (important paddling the lake).
You have to light some fireplaces in larger cabins to get a note to a torch location.
You have to crouch when throwing rocks (shitty weapon anyway)
When Jason has approximately 1/3 health he will fight you until one of you is dead without fleeing. The 2nd and 3rd day should restore all health to all counselors unless they died.
I still don't know how to navigate the cave or woods.
An extremely difficult game which I may have beaten years ago on a emulator, I can't remember but I would've had to cheat and practice a lot to do that.

I had SO MUCH fun with the C64 version of Friday the 13th.
It was very simplistic. Basically pick a character, wander around a huge map, find a weapon you like, and try to find Jason. He's disguised as one of your friends. When you hit them, if they're actually Jason, they'll change for a second before the disguise pops up again. You basically just keep hunting him down. If he runs, he'll change disguises.

The only thing is, they should have added a compass in one of the corners so that you realize which way is North, West, East and South on the map when you walk around. Considering the navigation is basically just along a horizontal and vertical grid, the compass would simply turn 90 degrees whenever you pass a corner and go from the vertical to the horizontal etc. That solves it.
The trials of classic gaming! Hahaha.

    Simple tricks:
    1) Enter a cabin and switch counselors when Jason is in their cabin.
    2) Ignore the cave.
    3) Power every counselor to get a torch and hunt Jason down.

10:27 to be honest, I'm surprised we didn't get a Friday the 13th cartoon. Those were different times indeed.

Comparing Mike Tysons Punch Out to Friday the 13th is like comparing a Bentley to a bumper car!

Every time I hear the Jason Alarm, it reminds me of "Ain't Love Grand" by Atreyu
