I grew up with an abusive mother-and Evelyn you are the mom we all dream to have. You did NOTHING wrong. Your love for your son is the most obvious and beautiful I have seen out of any 48 hours episode. These parents love their boy. And he is and was lucky to have that kind of love. Growing up in New England is complicated. People look and act gruff and tough, but if you have a flat they are the first to help you out. So you think everyone is severely a softie on the inside. But sometimes people are what they look like. That’s a hard lesson I’ve had to learn. Sometimes there isn’t more behind the crass and rough edges.
Oh! Somehow I missed the fact that this happened in New England cuz. I missed the start. And I kept wondering "what beautiful accent is this, a mix of NY and Boston" ... accents are a silly hobby of mine ... and you answered my question, thank you for that!!!!
This story is a great example of the problem with jury trials. 2 men having different outcomes for the same crime and same evidence is pretty horrifying.
That's not a problem with jury trials. That is simply reality. It happens all the time. Same problem set. People come to a different solution. If you are having trouble grasping having different answers in life, think back to your first grade classroom. Same math problem. Same information. 20 students come up with 3 different conclusions. That's life kiddo. You'll learn it happens in the big boy world too
@@SacrificeLoveJoyLife lol.. I’m 39 yo so I’ve been in the big boy world for a while. I agree that it’s a problem with people in general but the more knowledgeable the members of the jury are about science, the more likely they are to come to a reasonable conclusion when a lot of evidence provided in court is scientific in nature. I don’t even know what you’re arguing about. I just think there should be a basic legal and physics knowledge test to be on a jury. Nothing too deep. I know that trials from a judge have similar issues. I guess I thought that was obvious enough to go without saying but apparently you disagree?
A witness saw the exact same car Ferrera was driving near the crime scene, Ferrera admitted he left the dance early and was driving around, Walter failed the polygraph test five times, and Ferrera admitted to killing him. How could the jury not find him guilty?!
All of that evidence is not enough. The wrong people have been convicted, relying on just that kind of evidence. What kind of substantial evidence was there in this case? DNA, blood etc.
They way she said “the murderer’s came to the wake, and to the funeral” was so chilling, just imagining what it must’ve felt like knowing 42 years earlier she was feet away from her son killer’s and didn’t even know it 😮
It's wild I've done several cases like that. Where the killer shows up to support the family during the search, the funeral, family dinners, the community memorials etc. I have seen cases where the killer actually goes with the family to hand out flyers. It's even more shocking when the killer is the parent & they pretend their baby just disappeared. And they go on the news begging for the kidnappers to return the child. It's absolutely shocking.
When Evelyn McCabe asked, _"What kind of mother was I?"_ that broke my heart! I cried for her, suffering this doubt in her heart. *I think she and Bill were the kind of parents that all kids should have.* As for the case, it always surprised me that the man I found the most suspicious and unbelievable, Michael "Mike" Ferreira, was found not guilty! I wonder if the interview he did with _48 Hours_ prior to his trial was shown to the jury? For me, it didn't help him at all!
@@GoldiJapLoxA 15 yr old in the 60's hitchhiking in a small town wasn't unheard of & she didn't discuss everything surrounding that except that the dance closed at 11 pm so for you to judge is wrong.
Well said. She speaks as though she has cobbled together all the relevant facts. Clearly, she hasn’t. Who knows, maybe this adventurous kid didn’t want to be seen being dropped off by his mom. Sounds like these guys would have caught up to him eventually.
@@GoldiJapLoxYou clearly have no idea what it was like in those days. Hitchhiking was extremely common. My dad often gave lifts to hitchhikers. I still occasionally will give someone a lift in our rural area. Temperatures have been 99 and 100. I stopped for an elderly man walking with a bag from our local Dollar General. He thanked me but he was only three lots from his home, so he thanked me, God blessed me, and finished the sort distance on foot. It wasn't worth getting in and out of a car for that short distance. People were far more honest, reliable, went to church regularly and felt a stronger sense of morality and responsibility. You can't judge people of one time by the "standards" of a different time.
This is the saddest one I ever watched. The picture of him on the bed with his dad sleeping.... His mom keeping the money until she sees him in heaven... I am in tears... The Paine of losing your son then losing your husband must have been heartbreaking for that sweet lady. To have to go through life without the child you gave birth to is unthinkable. Those boys actually killed this couple as well, by keeping this terrible secret all these years. They were cowards then and they are still cowards. My eldest daughter died suddenly in January 2019, from a vicious asthma attack. She was 39 years old. The death of a child leaves a big, big hole in your soul, and you never go through a day without missing your child. The McCabe couple never found closure. May they be at peace now.
The wife of the killer is deluded. You can see the arrogance of Mike F. He got away with it for years and thinks he is untouchable. But the guilt is there. You can see it in how he deflects all of the accusations. The parents are heartbreaking to watch. RIP John.

This one has my blood boiling. These callous killers kept their secret all that time while John's family suffered. My only brother died young, leaving my parents to grieve him till their deaths. This story breaks my heart. Justice not served.
I know how they felt Sharon, lost my only son as well and you grieve the rest of your life. The pain softens but the missing never goes away. So sorry for your sad loss.
You can hear the deep love in these parents' voices when they reminisce about their beloved son. I personally believe both Ferraro and Shelly were involved but it is what it is...Rest in peace John McCabe!

Sorry if that is a spoiler, but listening to his parents NEVER give up....just beautiful people. I really hope they are together once again. I can't stop crying. This was devastating.
The fact that the exact same evidence in the exact same crime can give such different results is pretty damning for the jury system. If the facts are the same, the result should be the same in an objective court of law. The fact that whether or not you get life in prison depends on if some random person likes the look of your face or not is chilling.
When she went to their grave and said "guess what, we got em" I started crying my eyes out! 🥺 My heart broke for the parents... I can't imagine the feeling!
Who the heck jokes around about killing someone?! Then continue to speak about it years later?! At a bbq at that! It makes no sense! I feel so bad for this family😢 At least one of them was found guilty, the others will get their Karma!
I don't believe it's uncommon for people to make confessions they didn't do. Wasn't there an episode recently that the cops kept grilling the guy and he just ended up confessing to it.
It’s so hard watching parents who have lost their children, especially young children. I imagine every day after their death feels like you’re not supposed to be there. I hope his parents have found peace.
I watch true crime every day. I’ve seen thousands of cases. I’d say I am fairly desensitized. I work as a dancer, I see a lot pretty regularly. I watched this entire story, no problem. Until the last few moments. When Johns mother was watering the plants at her sons grave. “Hey John, guess what?”, absolutely heartbreaking. Full fledged tears. How awful it must be for that moment to be a happy one for a mother. 15 years, six months, and two weeks could never be enough. My heart goes out to this family.
I get physically ill just thinking about it. My brother died during covid. My mom was 85yrs old. She was so depressed and her health declined. She died a year later from diabetes. No parent should ever lose a child in my mind. The longest I didn't see my daughter was a month during lock down. My grandson and I are extremely close. He lived with me until he was 7yrs old and then my daughter got married. They moved out. That month of no contact was traumatizing for him and I. He stays with me from Friday to Sunday. I feel so bad for John's family. His mother trying to hang herself 😢 is heartbreaking.
"Yea i killed him" good joke loser. This is sad that poor mom said the money lost it's smell so she held and looked at that money constantly after JJ was taken. RIP Buddy 🙏
This is terrifying. It shows how flawed even a jury trial can be. How can you have the same evidence in both trials and get different verdicts. I watch a ton of true crime and I always wonder how they can convict people without physical evidence. This just scares me.
"Did he call for me? What kind of a mother was I! I wasn't there for him" What a pain for a mother to endure and especially for a kind loving one like she seems! An evil person takes her child's life and she has the blame all upon herself. Sad! So crazy sad.

I have seen a lot of these shows but these parents are something else. I can viscerally feel their pain decades later. Justice was NOT served - Mike is not just an awful human being, he is also definitely guilty. 😡 Who jokes about killing someone MULTIPLE times?
Agreed, rather strange thing to joke about
You are so right. The freed killer had guilt written all over his personality.
This was obviously police corruption. They took a weak man and coached a statement out of him. American justice is a joke.
He did it 100%.
@@Venus-gn5oi It is one person's word against another. The so-called witness was coached by the police. So you have no idea whether he is guilty or not. The first jury got it right by saying the case wasn't proven. American justice does not rely on proof but rather police corruption.
The mum saying she shouldn’t have let him go to the dance breaks my heart, she feels guilt about letting her son do something that was meant to be safe and fun. She could never have known

@@jamesvaughn4126 No. Sadly she passed away in 2016
I grew up with an abusive mother-and Evelyn you are the mom we all dream to have.
Sorry your mom is harsh hugs to you
What a handsome boy. My heart hurts for the family. What that child must have gone through was horrific.
This story is a great example of the problem with jury trials. 2 men having different outcomes for the same crime and same evidence is pretty horrifying.
Do you know of a better system?
It’s not perfect but it works more times than not...
Yes it’s very flawed
I think this is one of the most heart-wrenching stories of 48 hrs.
I love that old lady so dang much. A true spitfire. RIP
Mrs. McCabe defines loyalty on so many levels. She's quite impressive.
I wonder how those jurors live with themselves?
@@robinc4605 🙄It's called the totality of the circumstantial evidence. You realize DNA is not always available. You sound as gullible as the jury smh.

When she said she strangled herself to see what her baby went through, that broke me
Those parents😢 living all those years with that loss and grief.
That’s insane

He himself couldn't believe when the verdict read not guilty

As for the case, it always surprised me that the man I found the most suspicious and unbelievable, Michael "Mike" Ferreira, was found not guilty!

Ugh you've got a bitter heart gold I oops I judged you
@@GoldiJapLoxYou clearly have no idea what it was like in those days.
The father saying he is 15 yrs 6 months and 2 weeks... Heartbreaking. That first jury should feel ashamed. The shock in that man's eyes said it all

The fact that the exact same evidence in the exact same crime can give such different results is pretty damning for the jury system.
