I had one of these made special with Emmy Russell's (loretta lynn's granddaughter) which was 1 of 4 with these names down the fretboard (others had loretta lynn, sissy spacek and David russell (grandson)). great sound but unfortunately the 1.63 neck was too small for my left hand, so I sold it - a sad day, but right thing to do, since buyer had smaller hands. You are right that these are underpriced and have a great sound
Hi Sean, I'm familiar with Emmy. I've never met her, but I know that she is a fan of this guitar. I didn't know about David's interest in these, so that's good to know. I also knew they made one for Sissy as well. I really hate that it didn't work out for you, but surely appreciate the fact that you got it into someone's hands that was a better fit for it. You're welcome on this channel anytime, brother man and thanks for such great information. My whole life I wanted to go meet Loretta, but each time I was up that way I was distracted with something else. I thought she was a great lady and surely missed every single day. I think that's a great family. I know if I had just taken the time, she'd have asked me in for a visit, as this was just the kind of lady she was. Always welcome here, brother man 👍
Hi Mark, I can’t even begin to tell you how much that comment means to me. I truly appreciate you, brother man and it’s my pleasure to have you on the channel 👍🏻
Wow. I know its a subjective thing, but I absolutely adore the sound it has, when you're playing fingerstyle. The softness as you say really conveys an almost poetic and angelic vintage tone that just oozes of nostalgia and mojo. Like a big ol' warm blanket and a cup of coffee just watching the rain pour down. You really know how to make this guitar sing, Randy. Good job! Im so happy you got back to playing guitar again. I got my Excellente a year ago and hardly touch my Furch for twice the price, although it is an insanely good guitar in its own right. This guitar just resonates with me more for some reason. I guess the wand chooses its wizard as you might say. I actually recommended this guitar for a friend of mine who just started playing last year and bought this thing a month after me. She now has a true workhorse friend for life and even a good investment since we both bought it before the prices started skyrocketing. I couldn't be happier.
Hi Cato, if you watch the opening of my last video upload, I do a quick discussion on how the neck adjustment solved my last problem with this Excellente. I now put that guitar right at the top of my list, sir. I’m with you 100% on this. I could not be more impressed and I’m glad you and I have one, before this production stops, and it will. Yes sir, Furch is a killer instrument. I have a custom built guitar that can’t match my Excellente. I really appreciate your kind words and support on the channel, brother man 👍🏻
Have one too based on your initial recommendation and love it. Yours is sounding better and better. Only thing I am not great on is the weight. This thing is a heavy beast!
Yes, it has some weight, my friend. I'm glad it helped you make a decision. If I ever put a strap on it, I'm sure I'll feel it a bit more 😂. However, sitting on a stool and playing the thing is solid gold, which you've already alluded to. I very much appreciate seeing your smiling face again on the channel and thanks for such kind words 👍
I was looking at the Texan and came across your initial review of the excellente. Went on reverb and got one with hard shell case for $1000. Perfect timing. Got it yesterday and it’s absolutely amazing.
Thank you, Randy for the follow up review. I was sold on your first review and this one just confirms what a great guitar the Excellente truly is! Thanks man, much appreciated.
You bet, Collins. I have reconsidered the nut adjustment since taking the relief down a notch. It plays like butter now and I didn’t have to do any lowering of the saddle or nut. I’m sure you’ll love yours, brother man 👍🏻
Hi Randy. Thanks so much for the review. The Excellentes are scarce, so I am happy when I have a chance to see another in action. I have owned an Excellente for several months, now and absolutely love it! Mine is certainly not subdued. I know that the Martin Retro strings are your go to, but from my experience with Retros, they really only suit certain guitars (such as my all mahogany 000-15m), but not others. So far, I have tried the original factory installed Gibsons (PB), Gibson Light 80/20s, Martin MA540 PB Lights, and finally DR Rare Lights. The DR Rare are the clear winner! They are really a nice tone, warm, loud, and easy on the fingers. In my humble opinion, they sound much nicer than the Retros on your guitar. But, I do know that sound preference is very subjective! 🙂I am interested in hearing about string choices from other Excellente owners. Thanks for all of the work you do putting together these very entertaining TH-cam videos. Take care! Rod
Hi Rod, I love a comment that makes me rethink something and this one did! DR Rare are strings I’ve never heard of. I’m going to change the strings on the Excellente and one other guitar to those. I may do a short video on it as well, kind of a before/after and post it. I have the Martin 000-15SM and obviously have the Retros on it. That should have occurred to me, but didn’t, so thanks Rod, for the tip. I’ll do a follow up, string related video, in a few weeks. I hope to see more of you on the channel, brother man 👍🏻
Once again, your reviews are down to earth and spot on. A great combination of banter and picking that gets the point across in an heart-felt, but honest way. I think the term you are looking for is "Inclusive resonance ". A sound that comes from everywhere. I know when I pick up a guitar, it has to inspire me, and when I can not only hear, but feel the sound vibrating into my chest, I have a winner. Always look forward to your videos. I come for the review, but stay for the picking. Take care.
Inclusive Resonance - The word of the day everyone 👍 Thank you so much, Terry! I always hope they come across that way, but trying to get a good assessment of yourself means having the right mirror. I always worry that my mirror is lying to me, just because of its history. To hear that from someone else means the world to me, brother man. It was years before I started believing my wife about things I need to improve on. She sees me every day and knows me. Without folks to tell you the truth, you just never get there. When you notice it is not like that, tell me straight up, brother man and I'll thank you for it. I am going to start using that term, just so you know, "Inclusive Resonance" and you're always welcome at my fire 👍
Pickguards: my Frontier pickguard fell off as soon as I picked it up! Fortunately...it looks (and probably sounds) a lot better without it! Great review, Randy.
Yes indeed it will Definitely Sound Better with that big pickgaurd off, as it restricts the Sound/board from doing its job, but then there's the job of refinishing the top😮😮😮
I like the Video topic Randy but just a little comment on my experiences here in NZ, I didn't feel the Epiphone Hummingbird ( in the shop, new strings)didn't sound that great at all, however when I tried the Exellante, ( pickgaurd an all ) now That sounded Real good 😊😊😊
Hi Don, I certainly can’t argue the incredible sound emanating from this Excellente. Unbelievable for the price, way above its price point, brother man 👍🏻
I just bought it.... 2 days ago..... It's just amazing!!!! So Balanced...... it's a steal for the money!!!! (in Greece 1.160 euros) It's a treasure!!!! Thanks Randy for your review!!!
@@randysrhythm Just for information... I searched the official Epiphone site for any Masterbilt guitars... alll OUT OF STOCK!! I was very lucky ... I took the last piece which was in WHOLE Europe...and I think there is 1 only Excellente somewhere in Canada..... That fact puts me in thoughts... that the next package of products will be much HIGHER in price..... mother Gibson company is humiliated somehow 🙂..... I hope am wrong, but..... Greetings from the Epiphone's founder country, Greece!!!
@@panayotiscanellopoulos8696 I’m sure pleased that you pulled the trigger when you did! Yes sir, Epiphone has made quite the journey around the globe, since its founding. It’ll be interesting to see what changes are coming, for sure, brother man 👍🏻
I just ordered me an Epiphone Hummingbird after watching this. I've been back and forth trying to decide for quite a while. You sold me sir! Great videos by the way. Thanks!
Hi Jeremy, very kind of you to say. Not knowing how many videos you’ve seen on this channel, please watch this video that I did not long ago before accepting the new one. It explains what Gibson did at the beginning of 2024 with the factory. Hope you end up with a great guitar, but you need the information that I shared here. th-cam.com/video/K5qhR_Ws9ik/w-d-xo.htmlsi=ioA7K7XlDgNy4nGQ
@@randysrhythm Not to keep buggin ya, but you had mentioned how you had put the guitar down for years before coming back to it and I think you said you only recently learned how to fingerpick. I'm in the exact same boat! Played in rock bands in my younger days and then later kinda stopped playing. I've been getting the itch to play again and am really wanting to learn to fingerpick. Just saw you have some fingerstyle lessons. Definitely going to check those out next!
Hey Randy . . . . please forgive me for my tardy replies of late, but time is so very precious. A poignant and well timed upload for me. Melbourne's humidity is pretty much consistent. Year round (bar a few weeks annually), the hygrometer rarely goes below 45 and above 55%, but here in Newcastle (690 miles north) humidity can get rather high . . . for example, as I type this, humidity is at 71%. . . . so my guitars are in their case at all times, except for when I am playing them, and even then, I have to re-tune considerably after removing them from their case. 🤷🏻♂ Timber is truly a case study in itself, if you know what I mean! Anywho . . . . that guitar you are playing sounds beautiful Mate . . . . love it! 🎸 👍🏻 Cheers Randy! ✌ 🎶
My friend, Johnny L! Always great to see you and I've been wondering if you are getting settled in over there. Yes sir, woods are a study unto themselves, for sure. The cool thing about the Humidipacks is that that they completely regulate the moisture to that 45 to 55% sweet spot. I didn't mention it, but typically they last around 6 months here in Texas, where the humidity is more like where you are at now. Dry or wet, they seem to regulate it perfectly. I decided against any nut adjustment as the neck adjustment seemed to correct everything. I think the only thing I'll do is try some DR strings on it, which was suggested by another individual in this video, for purposes of getting more volume out this rosewood family Ovankal. Man it's great to hear from you, brother man and I always look forward to your thoughts here, and your next video 👍
Hello again Randy. Just a rather short reply . . . . you are on top of the 'humidity' thang, that's for sure. I truly had this idea that Texas was a 'dry heat' state . . . well Ya' learn somethin' every day (hopefully)!! 🤞 🙏 😊 Cheers my good friend . 🇺🇸 ☮ 🇦🇺
Hey Randy!! Have not seen ya around for about ten months l guess, l have to say.. the world is a better place knowing you are somewhere in it blessing it with your music! I'm about to retire and move out of Miami and go up around DeLand, l truly hope when l go that my new neighbor is like you, l said before l wished we were neighbors. I love you playing and your info is very entertaining.. l am still very in love with both my IBG Hummingbird and Excellente.. so much so l put both my Taylor GS mini-e AND my Taylor GA8e up for sale.. l have recently bought a Rainsong Jumbo which is quite a guitar, l do not care for the tone of the smaller carbon fiber guitars but the large body of the jumbo...it's pretty special. As well l bought a Martin D12-1 twelve string a it's also pretty amazing sounding.. l bought a Ovangkol Martin D16 which was my first Martin, the neck grabbed me and wouldn't let go! Amazing neck profile, sweet tone.. a finger pickers dream! I still think the thick, oversized, gummy tone killing pick gaurd on the Excellente has to go, l did put a rosewood gaurd on my Excellente, same shape and artwork done in aboloney, it's beautiful.. the guitar IS worthy! Wish l could post a pic for ya, l removed the thick gummy oversized tone killing gaurd from my Hummingbird and lm glad l did! Huge improvement! Resonance, volume..just so much better. What were they thinking? Martin, Gibson, Taylor or any other guitar maker of fine guitars would EVER put that rubber on the sound board of a guitar.. l am not one to scratch up the guitar with a pick, lm no Willie Nelson...and he doesn't use a pick gaurd! Irony?¿ If the look of the gaurd is that important to you l would suggest removing it.. you will be pleasantly surprised! I was using Elixers and switched to a high end D'Adario string and it is amazing! Just food for thought.. l felt the artwork on both gaurds looked like it was drawn by a 10 year old with a Lite -Brite!!😂 I may have a rosewood or ebony gaurd made for the Hummingbird, the wood gaurd seems to let it resonate better but it's not or will never be as nice as no-gaurd! If you would like to see them Randy.. text me at (617) 513-4410 and l will be more than happy to send you several pics of the guitars without gaurds, with new inlayed gaurd on the Excellente. I had a rosewood gaurd made without inlays Incase the inlays we're over the top and too much but l liked it Soo, l have the rosewood gaurd for the Excellente without inlays if you are interested in it, lm not going to be needing it. It's yours if you like it. I will take a picture of it laid on top so you will be able to see what it would look like on the guitar. Thanks a million for your videos!! I am a big fan!! Jim
Hi Jim, where to start? Perhaps the best commentary I have ever received on YT! Give me 15 minutes to copy the cell number down, the edit your comment to remove it. I am going to remove the Hummingbird pickguard soon, as I’ve been planning to do that after you first mentioned it in the earlier video. You are way too kind to me, but it means the world to me, my friend. I’ll text you shortly, so you have my cell. I’d love to see it. Thanks for hanging with me on the channel. The subscribers on this channel are much like you and I. In a world full of nonsense, that is refreshing, brother man 👍🏻
I’ve been using those humidipaks since 2019 and I have terrible insulation in my music room--best thing I ever did , my solid wood guitars stay safely humidified in their cases when I’m finished playing. Best investment for a guitar you can make !
Hey Randy....great vid! I have had my Excellente now for about 2 yrs now. Some of what you said in this vid is of the same impressions I have about the guitar. I bought the guitar a few months after it showed up in the shop here in Newfoundland (we don't get much stock to our little Island!) but anyway it hung on the wall for a while. Every time I went in, it caught my eye and I would pick it up and play it a little, until I pulled the trigger and bought it. This is a great instrument, and I do feel that it can keep up with pretty much anything I play it next to. I do find the neck a little chunky, and the guitar do feel bigger and heavier of course. However, it doesn't deter me! I love the range of instruments available today to guitar players....you don't have to buy a a big brand to get a good guitar, as a matter of fact I have found smaller brand instruments where the product is mind blowing. If you can hear the instrument with your ears and not your eyes, then man you can get some wicked guitars. I have the Masterbilt Frontier as well, and it is great (sounds similar to a Gibson J-200 only better! LOL). I can't seem to find a Masterbilt Texan that I like enough to buy yet, but I am always looking. With respect to the Inspired by Gibson, they are okay guitars for sure and when you compared them to Gibson, Martin and Taylor's lowered end instruments at their lower price point, well its hard to turn a blind eye to IBG's. With that said though, I wish Gibson didn't do that. I wish they would actually separate the two Brands so to speak....just build Epiphone Models, and make them killer like the Reissues. Give them the right price point, and let them be their own thing. I feel the IBG label continues to leave the long old impression of Epiphone being a cheaper Gibson. Gibson can produce lower priced instruments from overseas factories and achieve that, and they would still sell due to the name on the headstock. I love old Epiphone Models, and I wish they would let Epiphone just be Epiphone.
Hi Steve, I’m actually a bit familiar with your little island. I have a friend in Vegas that worked for Steve Wynn for a number of years as his marketing VP. She’s quite a lady. Her dad was a doctor on that island 👍🏻. I’m afraid Gibson has become so entrenched in being a USA brand that it’ll never happen. As far as the Excellente is concerned, I was going to adjust the nut height, but after the relief adjustment I’ve changed my mind. It plays perfectly now. You’ve made some killer observations here and I really appreciate the feedback. It’s great to see others having the same experience, especially when Gibson allows Epiphone to roll with a great set of plans. They have definitely upped their game with this. Thanks again, brother man, and look forward to hearing more from you on the channel 👍🏻
Hey Brother Randy, I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed your re-review of this beauty. If I’m not mistaken, this was the guitar that brought us together, which makes mine extra special to me. I can tell you I’ve done so many gigs with Loretta (I named her that for obvious reasons) and she just seems to get better and better. She’s truly one of my favorites, and as you know, I have a few to choose from 😂 Great advice on the humidification. Always great to see you, my dear friend 🙏🎸
That occurred to me, brother man Paul. Yes, we met on this one and I feel the same way my friend. You know, after correcting that relief, I haven't felt the need to have the nut shaved, so I may not do that after all. Yes sir, you have one or two to choose from, eh? I hope you're getting better every day! Always great to get your feedback and I can't tell you how much I appreciate such kind words, brother man 👍
TY for another great review and tips. I have one of these guitars and it will remain with me until I depart this world. I am convinced the Excellente is going to be a significant guitar as it matures. It is a unique instrument. TY MY
Hey Mark, great to hear from you. I couldn’t agree more. That Indonesian custom shop may even be outdoing some of Montana’s lineup, brother man 👍🏻 I’ll never sell mine either. Brothers to the bone!
Humidipaks get expensive when you have a lot of guitars. If you have more than like 6 I would just buy a humidifier. Keep all your guitars in one room and keep that room humidified. I live in Eureka,California. Humidity is always 60 or higher. I actually have to use a dehumidifier during the winter when it rains constantly. Nice guitar man. Peace.
@wileynicholson1682 Hi Wiley, that’s the same reason I use them, because they maintain humidity as opposed to simply adding humidity. Pretty ingenious, brother man 👍🏻
Hi Derek, thanks brother man. I really appreciate you taking time out to watch it and taking even more time out to mention it. Always welcome here, my friend 👍
@@randysrhythm Hey, great honest reviews , I like your style sir. And your guitars, big fan of the Godin familie guitars, Now I play Sire the Larry Carton J45 model . , This Epiphone has something special, wicked scratchplate , warm soulful sound. @@stevendegoodmojosmet4034 Your kindness exceeds any expectations I have, my friend. Thank you and well wishes to you and yours as well, brother man 👍🏻
just because i had the experience i wanted to share it with other viewers: i changed string gauge to 11s ( elixir in my case ) and the guitar exploded with sounds and overtones that were not there using 12s. it was an incredible transformation. ( i know you stated you set it up using 11s but i would never have thought that it made such a huge difference ). i watched a video of alamo musics chris kee and he mentioned that a guitar top can be under "too much" tension with thicker gauge strings. maybe that is what he spoke about. now it rings and rings and rings... will now try the martin 11 retros next
Hi John, thank you for the kind words. About 5 years ago really changed everything when I discovered fingerstyle, absolutely. If that encourages you, then it is all worth it to me. This is the kind of comment that makes it all worth every second of this journey! Keep at it, brother man, you’ll never regret it 👍🏻
Hello Randy. I watched this a few hours ago but I didn't have a chance to comment. I remember the days of playing until my fingers bled. My first guitar was a Harmony H181. I recently changed the strings and I am amazed with the tone. It has high action and will be a slide guitar until I have it looked at.I have a guitar room and I monitor the humidity and keep it between 45 and 55 per cent through devices. My living room is 45% and guitar room is 51% at present. The guitar room is in the basement, which helps. I run a humidifier about 7 months each year and on rare occasions I use a dehumidifier a few days here and there in the summer. I have a couple of hydrometer/hygrometer I monitor several times daily. My guitars are uncased and readily available to be played often, which they are. This works for me. I am in Kansas City, Missouri and I also keep a large pot of water simmering in the kitchen when I have any guitars upstairs. Your Epiphone sounds Excelante! Thanks for the update.
...and yes, it is beautiful to look at (and sounds amazing). Perhaps the word for the sound blooming from your guitar is "presence" and the hymn is Sweet Hour of Prayer, a favorite of my great late father. I would love to try one, but I have probably bought my last guitar unless I see a couple.
Hi John, I love it when I hear of folks taking this kind of care of their instruments! It's a moving target sometimes, but from your synopsis, you obviously get that, very well. You are very welcome for the update, brother man and looking forward to hearing more from you as I think folks will benefit from your experience 👍
@Randy's Rhythm As you have said, we learn from the past mistakes and the experience. I have had a couple with belly issues and fortunately only one cracked. The humidifier restored the tops and one was repaired. I have learned most everything I know about guitars in the past 10-15 years and I have been playing since 1970,or so
Yes l played one of those models from Epiphone, it Really sounded nice, a real nice boom to it.The best sounding Epiphone Iv'e Ever Played, abn' Iv'e played a few, trust me 😮😮😊
Yes sir, they are amazing guitars for sure. Can you refresh me on your first name? I remember you telling me this is your wife’s account. At least I remember that much 😂
I am Loving all the Epiphones!! This one sounds beautiful!! I dont love a wide neck, but id still love to give that beauty a try!!! Thanks for your super detailed review!! I So love learning about guitars!!! Ps, the laugh track is awesome!! 😁
Hi Ms J-Lyn, you might actually be more impressed with the IBG Hummingbird, but I am with you on this, try this one too. The neck is a slimmer chunky C, if that makes sense. I always love hearing from you and can’t wait to see your next upload. I hope Mr Sulliman and the kiddos are all doing well, ma’am 👍🏻
Haven’t seen you in a while, so great hearing from you, brother man. I’ve surely heard about this issue, but very pleased to hear that you still love it 👍🏻
Great video Randy. I love that guitar. I think you get tired of me saying that some times...lol.. Keeping your guitar humidified is one of the most important things you can do for it, besides not letting it get too much forward bow in the neck (adjust when needed), besides keeping it in a case. We use those sound hole covers that tightly fit into the sound hole and have another humid pack in the area of the peghead, like you do. I've heard the difference of a dry guitar and a guitar that's been humidified. And it's crazy how different it sounds. Let alone your taking a chance of your expensive guitar's top cracking, sinking or bulging. Anyways.. loved the video and can't wait to see your next. Take care Randy. Oh, almost forgot, Noah's J45 started to deform, but very slightly, and I asked him if he was keeping an eye on his humidity. Well, he wasn't. At least we caught it quickly. Started humidifying it and within a day or two it was perfect again. You've got to keep your guitars humidified and in a case. Preferably a hard case. And some guitars you can actually feel the sound. And even the Texan is made in Bozeman Montana in the Gibson plant. And of course you can get the Masterbuilt series made in Indonesia. I would love to do a head-to-head to hear the difference between those two. I got my Recording King from Sweetwater Music. If memories serves. Lol... Of course my memory has it's own issues. Anyways.. thought I was done with my comment, but I should have waited till the end. I jumped the gun ..lol .. Can't wait to talk again. Take care.
Brother man David, great to hear from you and appreciate the confirmation on regulating humidity. Yes sir, you got lucky on that one. I didn't mention how the humidity affects the sound, but you are absolutely right about that. My J-45 sounded terrible after that happened to it. Yes, I'd like to see a comparison of those 2 guitars myself. I hope you can make that happen in the near future. Always appreciate you, Dave. Your insights and history with guitars are something everyone can benefit from, brother man 👍 Say hey to Noah for me!
Glad this guy is still performing well for you brother, neat to see a recap on it months down the line! Glad you threw your retro 12’s on it, I love those strings. I’ve also got the D’adarrio Nickel Bronze 12’s on an older j45 and love how they age on that guitar. As always man, beautiful playing and fantastic insight - thanks Randy!!
Hey brother man 52, yes sir, she is only getting sweeter as time goes on. The retros really bring the sound out. Always great to get your input, brother man 👍🏻
Great review, Randy! I just ordered the Excellente, it is on back order from Sweetwater, so it may be a while. By the way, I've been using the Humidipaks for a number of years. I learned the hard way to keep the humidity right when I left a solid classical guitar hanging on my wall!
Hi James, we're of the same mind when it comes to caring for these guitars. I am really pleased they think they can secure you one, as I was told more than once that they have now stopped producing them. Do me a favor and let me know when yours comes in, please. I'd like to put that rumor to bed. Always appreciate your kind words, brother man 👍
I ordered mine from Sweetwater back in 2022 July, and they have been very good in following up with me, and finally it will reach me next Monday! 9 months waiting time!
@@Fc2222B Thanks for that update, Philip! I really hope they don't stop producing these. Gibson really needed some quality, less expensive guitars and these things beat all of their competitors, which by the way are worthy competitors. Congrats, brother man. Let me know what you think about it.
I love mine . It plays and sounds like a $5000 guitar . I slotted the pinholes on the high strings to get more of angle at the saddle , it made a big difference in sound quality , And I removed the fishman electronics and put in a K&K in , that was another upgrade !
I’m with you on the electronics. Anything is an improvement over the Fishman, brother man 👍🏻 The breakpoint of the strings is an interesting one that I may try. Appreciate the feedback 👍🏻
The high e string was almost straight on mine . I cut a slot almost 1/4 inch but on an angle , not all the way through like when you put none slotted pins in . I did the same to the b and h string but only 1/8 . It definitely was an improvement . I did it to a martin 000-15m before for the same reason
Randy This Excellente has to be the BEST sounding Epi (IBG) ever produced period. ..It seems like its opened up already since your early video review. Yes it sounds Bigger than the Humming bird more mid to bottom.... . Love your vid, keep on trucking my friend...
Hi Larry, I couldn’t agree more. I think you nailed it with the mid to bottom observation. I’ve actually grown more fond of the beautiful sound emanating from this beast of a guitar. It blows my mind that this instrument was built in Indonesia. Don’t get me wrong, they’ve built some decent guitars over the years, but nothing like this Excellente. I’ve come to appreciate that it’s just a step above anything they’ve done since they moved operations there. I really appreciate you scanning further back in the uploads to find some of these videos, my friend. Thanks for the comments and encouragement, brother man 👍🏻
It's Great to see an up-date on the Epiphone Excellente. I Viewed Your first video several times. I've owned an Excellente, for 6 months now, and I'm very interested in other People's opinions on this Guitar. I agree with everything You said....... the Guitar is Gorgeous. It's Tone is Dark'n'Sweet. It's a 6.5 Lb Beast !! It's Unique, and I Love It. However, it does hurt My Fingers, and I think It needs a Pro-Setup, from an experienced Luthier. Cheers Randy.
Hey Andrew, I very much appreciate the kind words and the interaction here. Yes sir, I think the sore finger syndrome has to do with the nut on a guitar, especially if it is open chords that are causing the issue, since you are there on the first few frets. However, since adjusting the relief, I'm holding off before doing it, since I haven't had sore fingers yet. Time will tell. I have a custom built 12th Root guitar that was done for me, to my specs. That guitar sounds like angels singing. It's a OOO scale/body size, with a Red Spruce top and East Indian Rosewood back and sides. I am going to have to get it to a qualified luthier for that adjustment. Neck relief wasn't the issue with it, it is squarely on the shoulders of the nut. Sometimes it just takes a bit of work, but in the end, we get an outstanding instrument, brother man 👍
I don't know much about guitar construction or materials etc, but that is a beautiful looking and sounding guitar, it really sings with a wonderful sustain, great review and playing Randy well done my friend 🎸👏👏🙏🏻
Randy, great job with these Inspired By Gibson reviews. I think I’ve watched every review available as I too happen to be a huge fan of the line. Hands down I enjoy your reviews the most. To date we agree on just about everything regarding these fine instruments. This would include the maintenance going forward such as keeping them cased and regulating the humidity. I gave up duck and deer hunting, quit fishing, I don’t have much interest in TV, my kids are all grown so for the first time in my life I’ve actually been able to devote a pretty serious amount of time to all things guitar. This includes not just playing, but getting into the background of each instrument and really enjoying the full experience of each piece. By investing so much time it’s given me this appreciation for everything that I did not have previously and it’s made for a real enjoyable experience. Currently I’ve got the 59’ Les Paul, The Epiphone Slash J45 is on its way and plan to grab the Hummingbird within the next week or so. Then I planned to move on to the Master Built side with the Excellente and either the Texan or the Frontier. I love Sweetwater, not a huge fan of this new Viper Blue color they’re going to be carrying here in a minute for the Master Builts and Inspired By line. Before it’s all over and they stop making the regular Inspired By J45 I think I’ll probably figure out a way to pick that one up, too. As you mentioned it’s not as fancy or flashy as some of the others, but it lives up to its nickname of “The Workhorse”. It’s just a real solid, sweet sounding guitar and I think I would regret it if I were to skip that one. Thank’s again for your reviews, they turned out great. Curious if you’ve had a chance to play with the Spark 40 or Spark Mini? If you haven’t you’ll be an instant fan. The most amazing little amp that has nothing little about it. The community has a lot of potential as well. If you haven’t, be sure to check it out. There’s nothing that comes close to it in my opinion.
Hi Casey, first of all, thank you for such kind words, undeserved as they are. I released a video Sunday night featuring my top 4 acoustic guitars and the Excellente made that list. You might find that video interesting. Secondly, are you sure that we are not related? No sir, I have never even heard of the Spark, but I’ll be checking it out now. You’re collection is on the right track, for sure. I do not like the blue either, so we’re on the same page there. If you’re thinking about the Texan or the Frontier, I’d do the Frontier. I recently played the Bozeman cousin and loved it. I’m just not a fan of the Texan, and I’m in Texas 😂. All the best to you and yours and I hope to hear more from you on the channel, brother man 👍🏻
Fantastic review Randy!! I really appreciate all of the information you packed into this one!! The guitar looks and sounds amazing and you play it beautifully as well! Have a wonderful day!! 👏👏✌️👍🎸🎶👍
Hi Brian, great to see you here and really pleased that you enjoyed it. Hopefully it had something in there that helped. Very happy to hear your thoughts and insights, brother man. Can't wait to see your next upload, brother man 👍
I just pulled the trigger and reserved this guitar. Everywhere is a back order and was told by GC that they expect to have this guitar around mid march-april 2024. Now me patiently waiting….
Appreciate that feedback. I have been told that it was rather way out there on the lead time. These things are really getting more sought after. It’s not even a question of the messed up supply chain anymore, it’s a question of production demands. Hang in there, it’s a present that’ll blow your mind, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm thank you sir! Your videos together the other one made me realize that I need to get this guitar. I have taylor 314GA, yamahas and no currently owning a gibson j45 standard, i need another workhorse to protect my gibson. Gibson for me is my grail guitar, but I should protect my investment as well. This excellente will do its job as my primary guitar especially if im playing outdoors. I hope my guitar comes soon. Thank you again
Got mine for 600€ (~600$) in mint used condition. wow, this thing is so beautiful... everything is well build. In my eyes it is a little bit more "stiffer and harder"to play as e.g. my Martin D-X2E or my Fender PD-220E. Maybe the reason could the weight. Thank you for your unbelievable good content. So much good information about guitars. God bless you. So long from Germany.
Hey Colt, I’ve been to Germany. Beautiful country and some great landscapes. I’m glad you were able to pick one up. This guitar is way above its price point, for sure. Much appreciate the kind words, brother man 👍🏻
@@mclametta9873 the Epiphone built is a class of it's own. The sound, too...but easier to play is the Fender. Let me explain this from a german standpoint...the Fender (for me) is the Volkswagen upper class...everything works and well built. The Epi Excellente is the Mercedes Luxury Class... But...If you have to pay the retail prices for both...only the Epi.
@mclametta9873 I’m interested in that answer as well. Those guitars have me curious. On the used market, the go for about $450.00, so a fairly easy purchase without breaking the bank. Great question 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm 450 is OK for the Fender...in most cases it comes with a decent hardcase. The Excellente has not a Case ..you have to buy one from Epiphone for about 120€ ($) Have paid 399 for my Fender . .but new. If i said...a good one, lightweight, well build...soundvise...really decent but not a Monster...an american beer in comparison to a german one 😁
hey randy, just bought one used, should arrive at the end of next week. i can not wait to hear it in person. jp cormier was over the moon for this one ( well, as he often is / was with the latest epiphone models ). i do hope the neck is not much bigger than the hummingbirds, i like the feel of the neck of the ibg hummingbird very much. edit: the lower volume of the excellente might make it easier to sing over it - the humminbird is hard to beat regarding volume. anyways, thanks and take care, armin
Hi Armin, owning both the Hummingbird and the Excellente, I’d say the neck on Excellente is noticeably larger. You’re right about the Hummingbird, it’s one amazing guitar and I do love the neck profile. You’ll be able to master the Excellente neck, but it will take some getting used to. Appreciate the feedback and the question, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythmit arrived today, the neck is gorgeous! the sound is gorgeous. i feel very lucky to have stumbled upon your video about it and then lucky again to have found one used. keep on going !
I've had my Excellente for over a year now and it just keeps getting better and better. Interesting to hear one of the other guys comments regarding the guitar volume as that hasn't been an issue at all with mine. The guitar is full of nuance that can be brought out at any time. I love mine and would never sell it.
Hi Rich, great to hear from you again. I have determined that Ovankal requires something other than Martin Retro 12’s. I’m going to put DR’s on it. That should correct the volume. Always great to hear from you, brother man 👍🏻
i love my excellente too. Since i got it i love playing with it musch more than with my sj 200 gibson! I also think that excellente's price should be much much more expensive cause it is sound like hummingbirds and better than taylors
Hi Ms Vivienne, thank you very much for the kind compliment. I have to assume he’s thrilled with his, right? It is great to have you on the channel, ma’am 👍🏻
Now Randy , You really need to tell us how much you like this guitar LOL You can tell she is opening up good. If I can say one thing about Ovangkol ,,,, Taylor used this tonewood alot , If Taylor can use it that should tell you right there about it`s quality. Yes it does have some qualities as Rosewood ,,,, sweetness in the mids with a little bass. Yes I would put her up against any Taylor (they are about the only builder where you can get bling , Gibson would be the Doves In Flight) and she will hold her own. 12 to 15 hundred or 7-8 thousand ? Your choice. The marshmallow inlay on the headstock is kinda cool if you ask me ! Randy keep pick`in !!!!
Hey there, brother man Terry! Great to hear from you. I had no idea Taylor used that wood. I played my first Taylor the other night. I’ll be trying out a few more, as that brand feels really comfortable in my hands. I really appreciate the insights and kind comments, brother man. Do I like this guitar? A little bit 😂
@@randysrhythm They are alot on Taylor`s ,, Bob did borrow from another builder but added his own take to it. I got caught up in the hype but came back to Gibson/Epiphone but I can not say a bad word about their older models , I have not tried any new ones.
Hi Randy! After 15 months of having this Masterpiece.... It got much better sound, wide opened.... and the "problem" of pickguard didn't appear to me.... Greetings from Greece!!! God bless you!!!
Hey Pan, I have finally reached the same conclusion about the pickguard. It’s going to remain with the guitar. Yes sir, the song just keeps getting better. I think that you nailed it when you said Masterpiece, brother man 👍🏻
Nice manner of presentation. Interesting that you find that the Epiphone Inspired by Gibson Hummingbird is your best sounding guitar! Also, I did not know that the back of J-45 can swell if left uncased!? James
Hi James, I really appreciate the kind words. Yes sir, but notice I said “sweetest’ sounding. At least I think that’s what I said 😁. The Hummingbird has a softer tone and it almost puts me in a trance when I play it. As far as the swelling at the bout, you could get lucky and never have it happen. However, the odds are against you if you don’t humidify it, regardless of the climate you live in. Acoustic guitars love humidity around 45%. That doesn’t mean you can’t take them out of the case and play them for hours. That said, if they get either too dry, or too damp, they will either crack the wood (dryness) or swell the wood (high moisture). I take one out every day, but always put it back in the case at night with humidipacks. They maintain the humidity around that 45% mark. Appreciate you, brother man 👍🏻
It sounds amazing. Every IBG Epiphone you've played sounds like a lot more $$$$ than the price. I totally agree about the action on an acoustic guitar. I still think the IBG Hummingbird has my heart though. The sustain on that Excellente sound really nice. About humidity....every winter I put a jar of water inside the bottom of my piano even.
Hi TM, they sound like, at the very least, $3K+ to me as well. I never thought about pianos much, but they are wood, so it surely makes sense. As always, I love hearing your thoughts, brother man, so thanks for taking the time out of your day to share 👍🏻
Hello! I’d like to know if this guitar is really worth it since, after a long time, I finally found one for sale at a higher price of $1800. What do you recommend? Is it worth it? Or can I get a better guitar with that budget? I was thinking of a yamaha llta transacoustic too.
Hi Felix, it depends. These are the most highly appointed, solid wood examples that I've ever seen from overseas. They sound amazing and mine was well worth what I paid for it. They play and sound like a $4,000.00 guitar, and that's just a fact. If you can play it before buying, you'll see why I feel this way, brother man 👍
Hi, Randy! I’ve been watching your down to earth reviews. Congratulations! What is it that you like best both in the IBG Hummingbird and the Excellente? From what I hear, the Excellente may sound more present in a mix. Don’t know if it would compete with the vocals or wrap them like a J-45, though. What are your thoughts? Regards, and keep going strong!
Hi Manuel, that’s a huge compliment and I can’t express how much I appreciate it., so thank you brother man! I think what I like about both of them is that I can tell they have Gibson’s oversight in the background, from the moment you strum them. They have that “thud” at the bass level. The IBG Hummingbird fits the Gibson Hummingbird sound and tone. The Excellente has a sound of its own, but clearly Gibson had a say in it. I think they both would complement a great vocal, which is why I don’t sing 😁. Great to have you on the channel, my friend 👍🏻
You are right about feeling bigger than other dreadnaughts... I think it's actually a bit bigger. Unfortunately it doesn't sound bigger 😅... It looks like they had too much laquer on it indeed, heavy also. But it's beautiful ( except the headstock in my opinion they would have done better with the other styles of the Masterbilt series)
Hi 77, yes sir, I’ve never been a fan of the Epiphone headstock, but as this is a replica, I think they just couldn’t help themselves 😂. However, mine is pretty full from a sound standpoint. The laquer is a bit thick, but the stepchild is the stepchild, right? I really appreciate the feedback, brother man 👍🏻
I manged to get one about 5 months ago. Shortly after that, stocks in UK dried up and they haven't been available in UK since - they are 'Special Order' only. You can't buy them 2nd hand, as 'NO-ONE' wants to sell theirs! Truly, an exceptional instrument in the acoustic guitar range. For mine, I replaced the pick-up that came with it with the pickup they put on the Epiphone EJ-200SCE, the e-sonic2, which I love to bits.
Hi Nick, I knew the day would come when these beasts would become very difficult to get. I agree that the electronics that came with it are junk. No idea why they didn’t just leave it blank, but they didn’t. I’m probably going to pull mine altogether, but I’m very pleased that you managed a replacement that suits you. These guitars are mind-boggling, to say the least. I really appreciate your input and update on availability in the UK. I have business over there next week, so I’ll be stopping by the shops. Great to hear from you and hope to hear more in the future, brother man 👍🏻
@Randy’s Rhythm- Hey, Man - wondering where in E Texas you’re located. I’m in Baytown which, I guess, some would argue is considered E Texas. Anyway, thanks for all you do for the guitar buying/playing public.
Hey JR, I’ve been to Baytown many times over the years. I’m much further north, about 30 minutes north of Tyler in a small town called Mineola. You are most welcome and appreciate the encouragement, brother man 👍🏻
Hello brother Randy!!! Hope you are well! I hope to be putting out some new tracks and hope you’ll visit when they are produced! Stay safe and take care, keep us in your prayers on the 23rd of this month, as it is the day of our youngest son’s passing. Love ya man! PeAce ✌🏻 Dana E💫🙏🏻☮️👍🏻
Hi there brother Dana! You know I’ll be there with bells on for your next video. I wouldn’t miss it for the whole world, my friend. It was devastating to hear about your youngest. I can’t even begin to imagine that level of pain and grief. It has always been our biggest fears for our children, as you well know. Yes, Mr & Mrs Everhart, you’re forever in our prayers to the Almighty. In fact, I finished a video over the weekend and planned to release it on the 24th, but I will now release it on the 23rd, in honor of this day. I think the story behind it is very fitting. You are most welcome, Mr Tonkers. The Hummingbird IBG is warmer. You didn’t ask, but I’ll also mention that the Excellente’s neck is larger, which makes the Excellente a bit too heavy. I hope this helps, sir 👍🏻
Hi TM, it was a tad high. I also eventually noticed that the relief was a bit much in the neck. When I pulled a quarter turn out of it, the action was perfect, brother man 👍🏻
I'm caught somewhere in the middle; I do not own an Excellente; however, I do own an Inspired by Gibson Hummingbird, and I feel the Hummingbird may slightly edge the Excellente in tone (I've only heard Excellente on videos tho). That is just me tho. Still, I would like to obtain an Excellente one day.
Hi David, that Hummingbird is hard to beat. It’s one of my go to guitars. The Excellente is louder, I’ve come to believe. It’ll be a nice addition for you when you’re ready. Always appreciate you, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm I'm sure a real musician would tell me I am tone deaf lol. I just love my Hummingbird. Sweetwater should pay you lol. You sway many of us in your reviews of IBG Epiphones there
I wonder if the Excellente has been discontinued. They appear to be gone in most retailers, and Thomann (one of the major retailers in Europe) even took it off their catalog. Still divided between the Excellente and the Hummingbird IBG. I love the Excellente’s tone balance, but it’s volume is rather low…
Hi Manuel, there’s one left on Reverb in Wisconsin. I love both guitars, by the way. I pulled the Hummingbird out this morning, but I may have the Excellente out before afternoon. Whichever one you decide on, you’ll be a happy guy. Appreciate the conversation and the information. I didn’t know they were discontinued and I really hate to hear that. My best to you and yours, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm I tried the Dr Rare Lights that were suggested in another post, today. They seem like a better fit for the guitar, closer to the Hummingbird basses! I still feel that the guitar has a low volume, though.
Hi randy. Thats a beautiful guitar. I definatly need to start using the humidpacks or something along those lines soon. Or some way to dehumidify the environment. I am currently living off the grid, and so I have no climate control in my home. I just have solar power, but it is rather limited. The humdity is too high recently due to the weather being rather wet here on the northwest coast, but there's not much I can do about that. If I keep my guitars in their cases with humidipacks, will that help to keep the humidity down in their cases? I have one guitar which is a vintage harmony that is precious to me, so I want to take care of it. I also have a yamaha with a solid top, and although it is not so valuable, I want it to last a long time for me. I have an epiphone guitar also, but it is all laminate construction, and it is also built like a tank, so I don't really worry about that one haha, it doesn't really move with the humudity much.
Hi Dom, appreciate you stopping in a sharing with us. Yes sir, the Humidipacks actually control the moisture and regulate it at around 45% in the case. So whether you live in a dry climate, or a wet climate, they keep the guitar perfectly humidified. They are about the greatest thing since sliced bread, brother man 👍🏻
Hi Kevin, if you can’t find one locally and play it, then Sweetwater is the place. That is, provided they are still available. I’d suggest calling them and asking. Thank you for the kind words, brother man 👍🏻
Hi Randy, thanks for the series of videos you have posted on the excellente, I’m thinking of picking up one sight unseen, could I ask please what year/month of production yours is, on serial first two digits is year, 2nd two digits is month of production, thanks!
You are most welcome. Mine was made in August of 2021 at the factory in Indonesia, fifth and sixth digits being factory code 23. Let me know if it works out for you 👍🏻
@ hi Randy , thanks for taking the time to read the comment and reply with this useful information, much appreciated , I’ve pulled the trigger on an ex display model one with a decent 14 days to return policy from the online retailer , I’ll be sure to let you know if it hits the mark , thanks
Hi Randy! Thank you as always for your smooth reviews! There is some confusion with the Excellente. The other day, I played an Epiphone Excellente and it was not what I expected? BUT, is there an Epiphone Inspired by Gibson (Masterbilt) Exellente? That is, are there 2 'levels' of Excellente? James
Hi James, you are welcome for the video, sir. No sir, they only produce these in the Masterbilt factory, unless they moved everything to China. The next one you try needs to have 23 as the 5th and 6th digits in the serial number. That tells you it was made in Indonesia. Strange things seem to be going on at Epiphone lately. It might be better to try the used market. Appreciate you, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm Thank you Randy. The Excellente that I played was not IBG and did not have the label on the inside with the 23. So, it appears that Epiphone now have a 'lower' end Excellente. James
@@jamesdeagle No the Excellente is not IBG, its a masterbuild with the blue sticker.. Gibson never made an Excellente and theres only one Excellente. All the masterbuilds and Ibg's are now made in China.. I dont think that changes anything tho. Same quality.
@randy, I've been enjoying your videos on these Epiphones. I have been close to buying gibsons for quite awhile, but always back away due to cost and whatnot. I've owned a Masterbilt J45 (sold it stupidly) and am now considering one of the newer IBG Epi's. If you could only choose one, which would you choose and why?
Hi Blake, if I could find an Indonesian IBG Hummingbird, that would be it. The reason is the tone, playability and a balanced neck,?as far as weight goes. They are now making these in China and not Indonesia. I have a video out with the word “Warning” in it. I would suggest you watch it before you purchase your Hummingbird, so you can ensure you’re picking up the best choice. Appreciate you watching the videos and especially the comments/questions. Hope this helps, brother man 👍🏻
Hey Randy! Saw this video of yours and got myself an excellente right away. I got it last month and it's awesome. May I know how high your strings action is? Thank you so much, appreciate it.
Hi Ryan, you’d think I’d have an action gauge, but you’d be mistaken 😂. I need to pick one up, so thanks for the reminder. I can tell you that the action on mine had to be lowered. If memory serves, about a 1/16th”. It plays amazing now. Glad to hear you got one of these, because I doubt they’ll keep making them much longer. Great hearing from you, brother man 👍🏻
Thank you for your review. It is very interesting and it is convincing me to bought this fantastic guitar. I have two questions about his neck: 1) Is the neck finish polished or opaque? 2) if you have had the chance to play a "MARTIN STANDARD SERIES REIMAGINED HD 28" (my dream), does the shape of the neck look like it? Thanks a lot.
Hi Andrea, the neck is opaque. As far as the comparison to the 28 is concerned, I’ve not had the opportunity to play one, so I can’t speak to that. It’s a beautiful guitar and sounds amazing. I really appreciate the view and the comment/questions. Thanks again 👍🏻
Man...I know most people like the eagle but I would prefer something else...possible? Its just so standard...how hard to change the pick guard...actually I like the Frontier a bit more ....I have a rosewood Alvarez anyway I really like.
Hi KM, I have a friend that changed the pickguard and he says it’s pretty easy to do. I plan to pick up a Frontier at some point, so very pleased to hear that you like it. Appreciate the feedback brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm Looks like(I did a search) that you use a hair dryer and a flat tool...I guess its just glue you need to loosen up, but the heat will not bother the guitar finish.
Hi Ms Anna, thank you for the questions. The shoulder is 12 1/8” and the bottom (other side of the bridge at the widest point) is 16 1/8”. I hope this helps, ma’am and thanks again for the visit 👍🏻
Hi Alex, the packet says Mm12 in the top right corner. They are Monel, pre-war composition strings, light. www.martinguitar.com/strings/acoustic/retro-acoustic-guitar-strings.html
I can't find that guitar for 849.00. I found "epiphone masterbilt excellente" for 1249.00. It looks exactly like yours, but I don't think yours is a masterbilt at Sweetwater. Is it 🤔? Maybe they've raised the price. Any suggestions?
Hi Bruce, if the one you're looking at is on Reverb, that guitar is being sold in Switzerland. There are a few used ones on Reverb that you can pick up for a grand, but I don't know their condition. Yes sir, mine was built in the custom shop in Indonesia, which is the Materbilt factory. The $849.00 price you mention was the original selling price of the Inspired by Gibson Hummingbird, which you can't get anymore for that price. They are all going up. From what I see on Reverb, they are now up to around $900.00. The Excellente is $1,299.00 at Sweetwater, plus whatever a new case would cost, which I assume would be around another $150.00. You have to backorder these at the moment, as they are not in stock. Does that clear it up, brother man?
@@NytronX Good question, but I doubt it. I don’t see Gibson allowing that. If they do it, they will move directly into that Gibson territory and they are not at all far from it with this instrument as it stands 👍🏻
hi randy. Hope u r doing good. Which one guitar would you suggest buying from 1) HUMMINGBIRD. 2) FRONTIER 3) EXCELLANTE. As you have played and owned all of them for quite sometime now i am sure you are the best person to ask this. I am okay with the prices of any of them. What matters is the build quality and tone. Thank you.
Hi, I did a comparison of the Hummingbird and Excellente at the following link: th-cam.com/video/yWATByB7MHs/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared That said, it doesn’t include the Frontier, but I have played one. If you are a guitarist that stands up and plays, the Excellente can get a bit heavy. The Hummingbird is a great build and a great sounding guitar, but the clarity is not as good as the Excellente. The Hummingbird is a bit lighter and sounds very close to a Gibson Hummingbird. Overall, the Excellente is the king of the three mentioned here, but that in no way puts the other two down. I hope this helps 👍🏻
Yes i have already seen that comparision video of yours but bcz it didnt include frontier so the question. Thank you so much for helping me to zero in on excellente. I was really confused. This is one question i have asked to 2 other youtubers also to be very sure😇 and all have unequivocally voted for excellente but all have been equally positive for frontier and hummingbird also. I am so grateful to you all for helping people like us. Also because in my city (INDIA) the shops dont keep expensive models to try and buy which makes decision making extremely difficult. Wish you great health and lovely time. 🙂 @@randysrhythm
Hi sir I’m after some advice I’m about to pull the plug on one of these but some are saying the volume of it isn’t good at all could you please let me know your thoughts thank you
Hi Mark, I haven’t experienced low volume with mine. However, if you plan to purchase one, I’d be sure to check the serial number first. The 5th & 6th digits from the left should read 23. That’s the Samick factory in Indonesia. Epiphone have now moved operations to China, and lack consistency. You may be forced to try and find a used one. I’m pretty sure you’ll fall in love, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm thank you I for the information sir. It is a used one from 2020 so i hope it’s the better model. Have a great day sir (just confirmed and it is Samick factory) thank you again
No sir, I’ve only played the USA made Frontier, which I loved. If you can find an Indonesian made IBG Hummingbird, that’s definitely the guitar to buy. I think the newer Chinese built acoustics, which is where Epiphone now makes everything, seems to suffer QC issues. At least that’s been my experience with them, brother man 👍🏻
I often look at your review, I think what you do is great. And I have now also had the excellent one for 10 months. It's going to sound better every day. And I also think it really has its own sound. truly a guitar in itself with its own sound. The excellent one is no longer available here in the Netherlands.
@@peterlenior7583 Hi Peter, I’m really pleased that you picked one of these up. My guess is that they will cease production on the Excellente at some point in the near future. You couldn’t be more right about it standing on its own. It’s always great to see this kind of feedback on such a great instrument. Hope to see more of you on the channel, brother man 👍🏻
No it's not really that much of a 'cannon'. I have one (bought it in May 2022). It's actually a bit on the quieter side, as it arrives. Do some more searching on this guitar model to find more reviews and comments concerning its (lower) volume. I agree that it does have a nice tone however; it's just not as loud in-person as you might think it is when listening to mic'd internet videos (or by its 'looks', with all that bling). In particular, single-note flat- or finger-picking is not as cutting, while it fairs better with heavy strumming. Perhaps a change in the saddle area and/or nut might help. Heavier gauge strings helped a bit. My guitar weighs 6 pounds 1 ounce (on a professional scale) with strings mounted. It arrived with the truss-rod fully slacked and needed a setup. Since May 2022 it has developed a buzzing in the mid-fret area that I can't seem to get out with an adjustment.... next step is to check it for fret heights, etc.
@@kennikuhlmann-clark9860 I totally agree -- mine was so quiet on arrival. Almost two years later, it's really opened up. I just put a new set of Martin lights on it and it really does sound like a cannon now. It's about as loud as My D-18!
Hey there Mr Dykes, It really does just boil down to resonance. You know how sometimes you think there has to be a better word for it? Regardless, thanks and I think that is exactly the best way to say it 👍🏻
@@rdykes828 you are most welcome. Be sure to check the neck relief. Mine was a bit too much. After I took the relief down, I decided to not do anything with the nut. It plays like butter now 👍🏻

Btw - my request to gibson to consider having their ozark usa make an epiphone 12 string usa frontier got forwarded to epiphone by jason. If u have any contacts with them, this wishful thinking might become a reality. Thanks
You betcha Sean, I have a follow up discussion to have with Gibson, so I'll mention it. I like this idea as well. A Frontier 12 string would sing, especially with Maple back and sides 👍
@@randysrhythm I'm open to any of their back and sides material - maple, mahogany, indian rosewood. I've been thinking about a guild 12 sting - I'm a big fan of justin Hayward of moody blues who plays an open c tuned 12 string for their biggest hit "question of balance". I currently play a martin j12-16gt (a best kept secret imho) and love its sound, but want to step up to a bigger body 12. Thanks and and love your channel
@@randysrhythm prior to retiring, I provided consulting advice to small and large businesses focusing on how to increase their profitability thru innovation and executing their primary focus areas flawlessly, so I saw this 12 string usa frontier as a "thinking out of the box". Currently, there seems to be a void in well made acoustic guitars between overseas epiphones and their pricier gibson customs. Unless you buy used, there are few solutions out in the market for step up, next level guitars. They can't keep excellentes in stock and custom gibsons fly out the store too, but so does epiphones usa models. My humble opinion as 1 customer, but my neighborhood jam session players have mentioned the same thoughts when we get together. Cheers
Always welcome here, brother man 👍
These videos are so engaging because they are driven by genuine enthusiasm for good guitars. No showing off either. Thanks again.
Hi Mark, I can’t even begin to tell you how much that comment means to me. I truly appreciate you, brother man and it’s my pleasure to have you on the channel 👍🏻
Agreed! When I was a kid I played Cello and after that I couldn't hear or feel anything from laminate guitars.
I really appreciate your kind words and support on the channel, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm No worries, brother man (I love that expression). - Im here for the long run.
I couldn’t be more pleased for you. Such great instruments and now we both have one 👍🏻
Glad I could help
Take care.
Inclusive Resonance - The word of the day everyone 👍
Thank you so much, Terry!
Hi James, that is hilarious! I wish my hummingbird guard had fallen off 😂. Thank you for the kind words, brother man 👍🏻
Yes indeed it will Definitely Sound Better with that big pickgaurd off, as it restricts the Sound/board from doing its job, but then there's the job of refinishing the top😮😮😮
Unbelievable for the price, way above its price point, brother man 👍🏻
I've had my Excellente for 3 days and it's already starting to come off. I've heard lots of ppl say it sounds better without it
I just bought it.... 2 days ago..... It's just amazing!!!!
So Balanced...... it's a steal for the money!!!! (in Greece 1.160 euros)
It's a treasure!!!! Thanks Randy for your review!!!
I couldn’t be more pleased to hear this. You are most welcome, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm Just for information...

@@randysrhythm I’ll check it out Randy. This is a used one on Reverb that I made an offer on. It’s a 2021 model.
Great!!! Any updates that I learn about are always in the description of the video, just FYI
Jeremy, you just made my day, brother man 👍🏻
Hey Randy . . . . please forgive me for my tardy replies of late, but time is so very precious.
Anywho . . . . that guitar you are playing sounds beautiful Mate . . . . love it! 🎸 👍🏻
Cheers Randy!
Cheers my good friend . 🇺🇸 ☮ 🇦🇺
Thanks for that testimony, Ms Christine! I appreciate the congrats, ma’am 👍🏻
Just got mine Randy and can't wait to take to the show on Saturday! Thanks for the reviews
You are most welcome, kind sir. These guitars are so underrated, it’s ridiculous. Great to hear from you, brother man 👍🏻

Hi Raymond, that is just a short of Elvis’ version of Dixieland. Thank you for kiddos, brother man 👍🏻
The hymn is called: "Sweet Hour Of Prayer ". 🙏
She’s truly one of my favorites, and as you know, I have a few to choose from 😂
Great advice on the humidification.
That Indonesian custom shop may even be outdoing some of Montana’s lineup, brother man 👍🏻
I’ll never sell mine either.
Peace.
Great point, Josh. I think humidifiers are reasonably inexpensive these days. Appreciate the advice, brother man 👍🏻
I live in Indio, California where there is no humidity. I have to keep my guitars cased with humidipaks.
@wileynicholson1682 Hi Wiley, that’s the same reason I use them, because they maintain humidity as opposed to simply adding humidity. Pretty ingenious, brother man 👍🏻
Another great review Randy👏
Hi Derek, thanks brother man. I really appreciate you taking time out to watch it and taking even more time out to mention it. Always welcome here, my friend 👍

just because i had the experience i wanted to share it with other viewers:
i changed string gauge to 11s ( elixir in my case ) and the guitar exploded with sounds and overtones that were not there using 12s. it was an incredible transformation.
Hi Armin, great information and very much appreciate you sharing it with everyone, including myself, brother man 👍🏻
The fact you mentioned you didn't play finger style up until 5 years ago got my attention because I'm trying to learn now. You play beautifully.
Hi John, thank you for the kind words. About 5 years ago really changed everything when I discovered fingerstyle, absolutely. If that encourages you, then it is all worth it to me. This is the kind of comment that makes it all worth every second of this journey! Keep at it, brother man, you’ll never regret it 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm thankyou so much for your reply and encouragement. God bless you man
Hello Randy.

It sounded great in the intro. Thank you pal. Great video.

I have one - lovely guitar for the money - my pick guard is lifting though, a classic Gibson problem...I can live with it.
Your insights and history with guitars are something everyone can benefit from, brother man 👍
Say hey to Noah for me!

Anything is an improvement over the Fishman, brother man 👍🏻
The breakpoint of the strings is an interesting one that I may try.
Thanks for the comments and encouragement, brother man 👍🏻
Love your review Randy - love the WAY you do your review - real deal!
Hi Bruce, I really appreciate the kind words, brother man 👍🏻
It's Great to see an up-date on the Epiphone Excellente.
Hi Trevor, much appreciated, brother man 👍🏻
Randy, great job with these Inspired By Gibson reviews.

Much appreciated my friend 👍🏻
Greetings from Bosnia my guitar brother.
You helped me choose this beautiful guitar😃
Hey Salmir, I’m glad to hear that. It is quite the guitar, brother man 👍🏻
I just pulled the trigger and reserved this guitar.
I hope they don’t move the production from Indonesia to China for future runs of this Excellente, just as they did for the ‘bird.
@DerComputerist Agreed!
Beautiful sharing and great reviews my dear friend Randy!!
Love and respect Kyle!! 😊🥁🇵🇭
Thank you very much, Kyle!
Your reviews are the best I've ever seen, so much more tidbits of, I think 🤔, valuable information 😀. Thank you 😊 so much for sharing.
Hi Bruce, what a kind thing to say! I really appreciate you, sir and thank you so much for the kindness.
Beautiful guitar!
Thank you Ms Rose!
Much appreciate the kind words, brother man 👍🏻
Hey, what would you say - do you rather like the Fender PD-220E or the Epiphone?
The Excellente has not a Case ..you have to buy one from Epiphone for about 120€ ($)
Have paid 399 for my Fender . .but new. If i said...a good one, lightweight, well build...soundvise...really decent but not a Monster...an american beer in comparison to a german one 😁
hey randy, just bought one used, should arrive at the end of next week. i can not wait to hear it in person. jp cormier was over the moon for this one ( well, as he often is / was with the latest epiphone models ). i do hope the neck is not much bigger than the hummingbirds, i like the feel of the neck of the ibg hummingbird very much.
edit: the lower volume of the excellente might make it easier to sing over it - the humminbird is hard to beat regarding volume.
anyways, thanks and take care,
armin
Hi Armin, owning both the Hummingbird and the Excellente, I’d say the neck on Excellente is noticeably larger. You’re right about the Hummingbird, it’s one amazing guitar and I do love the neck profile. You’ll be able to master the Excellente neck, but it will take some getting used to. Appreciate the feedback and the question, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythmit arrived today, the neck is gorgeous! the sound is gorgeous. i feel very lucky to have stumbled upon your video about it and then lucky again to have found one used. keep on going !
@@lynguist I am thrilled to get that feedback, brother man 👍🏻
I've had my Excellente for over a year now and it just keeps getting better and better.
@@stathkon Hi Kostas, I couldn’t agree more brother man and it’s great to hear another testimony 👍🏻
Great review Randy, my dad also got it

@@randysrhythmHi Randy, yes he is
You hear it in your chest!!! I know and get it!
Yes sir, brother man 👍🏻
Now Randy , You really need to tell us how much you like this guitar LOL
You can tell she is opening up good.
Fantastic review my friend the guitar sounds great 👍
Hey there brother man! Always great to see such a talented guy stop by. Thanks for the kind words, sir 👍🏻
Appreciate you, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm Wow! Thanks for the thorough explanation! James
It sounds amazing. Every IBG Epiphone you've played sounds like a lot more $$$$ than the price. I totally agree about the action on an acoustic guitar.
I still think the IBG Hummingbird has my heart though. The sustain on that Excellente sound really nice. About humidity....every winter I put a jar of water inside the
bottom of my piano even.
Great to have you on the channel, my friend 👍🏻
fantastic play ! well done
Much appreciated and thank you 👍🏻
You are right about feeling bigger than other dreadnaughts...
I really appreciate the feedback, brother man 👍🏻
Bought an Excellent yesterday!
Excellent, Benjamin!! Assuming you love it? What an instrument, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm It is a beautiful guitar! I think I need some intonation work on it though.
Great to hear from you and hope to hear more in the future, brother man 👍🏻
Thank you. Safe travels!

Thanks for a great review. Can I ask - in a nutshell, what is difference between the sound of this and the hummingbird? Thank you!
You are most welcome, Mr Tonkers. The Hummingbird IBG is warmer. You didn’t ask, but I’ll also mention that the Excellente’s neck is larger, which makes the Excellente a bit too heavy. I hope this helps, sir 👍🏻
How was the action on the Hummingbird when you got it?
Thomann just got back to me. According to their representative, the Epiphone Excellente has been discontinued.
@@manuelsoares507 Someone else recommended the DRs to me, so I’m going to give them a try too.
They are about the greatest thing since sliced bread, brother man 👍🏻
Where can I get a excellante at I really want one I really like your review
2) if you have had the chance to play a "MARTIN STANDARD SERIES REIMAGINED HD 28" (my dream), does the shape of the neck look like it?

Hi Andrea, the neck is opaque. As far as the comparison to the 28 is concerned, I’ve not had the opportunity to play one, so I can’t speak to that. It’s a beautiful guitar and sounds amazing. I really appreciate the view and the comment/questions. Thanks again 👍🏻

Hi, I did a comparison of the Hummingbird and Excellente at the following link:
th-cam.com/video/yWATByB7MHs/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared
That said, it doesn’t include the Frontier, but I have played one.
What kind of strings would you recommend using on it?
I use Martin Retro 12’s. I find these prewar designs to really shine, brother man 👍🏻
Feels bigger because of the scale of 25.51, the hummingbird is 24 and 3/4
Thanks Stefan, that has to be it. Appreciate the info, brother man 👍🏻
Hey Randy, have you ever tried the Masterbuild Frontier? Im thinkin about gettin one but im not sure between the Hummingbird ibg or the Frontier..
At least that’s been my experience with them, brother man 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm Ok thanks, ill see, i just like the aged viper blue they have right now on sweetwater.
Paul Georgia bought that one and is not impressed, just FYI 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm Whos that?

Hoi Randy , what strings you put on the excellente Gr Peter
Hi Peter, I used Martin Retro 12’s.
Thank you , Randy . Greeting Peter
Hope to see more of you on the channel, brother man 👍🏻
Im gettin one
Very pleased to hear it! The price just seems to keep going up 👍🏻
Did you get one? I've had mine for a few days and wow it's just great!
That thing is a canon!
Hi Mark, agreed!
No need for humidifier in pacific north west. If I had to worry about that stuff my guitars would be broken. I'd be a drummer or sax player. haha.
There does seem to be more horns up that direction, eh? Always great to see you, brother man D Jr 👍
RESONANCE
Hey there Mr Dykes, It really does just boil down to resonance. You know how sometimes you think there has to be a better word for it? Regardless, thanks and I think that is exactly the best way to say it 👍🏻
@@randysrhythm You ,sold me... , mine will be here this week , Thanks !
@@rdykes828 you are most welcome. Be sure to check the neck relief. Mine was a bit too much. After I took the relief down, I decided to not do anything with the nut. It plays like butter now 👍🏻
I ruined a 76 Guild D35 by not knowing about humidifying. I moved from Ohio to Colorado...
Hi Bat, your story is my story and quite heartbreaking. As they say, live and learn. Always appreciate hearing from you, brother man and thanks for the support 👍🏻
@@teamportsmouth7618 You are most welcome, brother man and I really appreciate what you bring to the table 👍
Cheers
I just got one. It is awsome.
Very pleased to hear that and congratulations, brother man 👍🏻
