Yamaha Red Label FS5 & Furch Blue G-Cm... Two very cool guitars

  • Both of these guitars are awesome. The Furch is new to me and probably the most noticeable differences are the projection of the Furch..it has a BIG LOUD voice which isn't obvious in the video and then the weight distribution is a little different. Aside from the volume I think the sound is pretty well captured.
    The Yamaha voicing seems more refined and to me a little less harsh.
    Furch is very sensitive and picks up a lot of string noise and overtones which can be good or bad depending on your style of playing and that is probably what I am describing as harsh, more obvious subtle noises, harmonic overtones picking and squeaks.
    I wanted to have a winner in my eyes but stye are both amazing.. If I was forced to sell one the Furch would go.. and yet it is probably the one I'm going to chose for gigs.. because Really like the neck shape and spacing.
    So I really don't know.. anyways I really do like both of them and can recommend either. If you're looking at either hope it's at least helpful
    Cheers for watching

    I prefer the Yamaha too . I tried a Furch and a load of other guitars, Martin, Taylor, Eastman, when I bought my FSX5. The Furch is voiced more to the high end and would probably cut thru better in a full band setting. More like the Yamaha LS6 I used to own. The FS is just sooo smooth and woody sounding, nicely balanced across the strings too.

      Totally agree with all of that, people seem to think the Red Labels are good "for the price".. but they are just straight out very good, very musical guitars. I'm glad you guys are hearing what I'm hearing.

    Still prefer the fuller tone of the Yammie by FAR. the Furch, to me, has that modern, thinner boring tone that's creeping in to more guitars lately. Sounds nice, but a bit meh, while the Yammie sound is full of harmonics and overtones and is that typical yamaha sound. Which I love. I wouldnt mind a Furch, but I will never part with any of my Yammies. I just love em! All the best mate.

      Yeah man its an interesting comparison for sure. The Volume of the Furch is incredible and thats not so obvious in the video but I think it comes at the expense of a little soul or woodiness to my ear. Its also green compared to the Yamaha and should only get better with age..
      Horses for courses. I LOVE the Yamaha without the sound hole pickup, its so much nicer to play acoustically. You forget how good it is

    Nice demo. I am a fan of both companies but have not owned a Furch yet. There is a local dealer and I have gone and played them and they are awesome in both sound and construction. I have been a 12 string player forever, they make a 9 string that I am seriously lusting for. Local US prices start about $1600 and go into custom shop level prices for the top line models.
    I enjoyed both of the guitars you played. Every acoustic has its own voice, no two identical really.
    You mentioned a 70's Takamine sound. I own a '77 Takamine F400 12 string and it is my favorite acoustic, I play out with it regularly and get a lot of comments on how great it sounds, many confusing it with a Martin 12 due to it's awesome tone and it's similar style and headstock script. Neck is narrower than most 12's (narrower than a D12-28 Martin) and is super easy to play with just awesome sound. It has had a complete overhaul with neck reset, refret and new bridge and saddle, plus brace and truss rod repairs. Electric 12 string level action now. When I ound it in a pawn shop for $100 it was unplayable, but I knew what it was and was capable of doing. Well worth the restoration effort.
    I have thought about doing a video on it. It is not common to see them in playable condition today.
    Anyone want to see one?

    • @JasonMckellMusic
      @JasonMckellMusic  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Aaah man good on you for restoring it.. I have an old Stella Sovereign here which plays pretty good and sounds great but REALLY needs to come apart and be put back together. properly.
      We did our best but the whole body is bowed now.. I would love to get it restored some day.
      That 9 string has me curious I’ll have to go check it out now.
      Also I think that’s a really good point with ‘no two acoustics being identical’ good to keep in mind with these reviews.. they only represent these particular guitars **individual results may vary.. something like that.
      Cheers for the sub.. I’ll check out your channel when I’m in the computer later.. now you better get that guitar 12 string story up and running

    Seems like the Yam is easier to squeeze blues out of, the Furch more open, probably suited to Celtic. Have you tried it without the thumbpick?

    • @JasonMckellMusic
      @JasonMckellMusic  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Man why didn’t I think to do that in the video?.. yes Furch being a SNAG (sensitive new age guitar) is nice with bare fingers. It does get noisey easily, squeaks if you don’t connect straight that kind of thing. Guild is the same.

  • @tbeau6663
    @tbeau6663 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

    It'll be a different matter once the Furch has truly opened up as much as the Yamaha already has. The other difference in tone is due to the Furch being cedar topped and marginally larger bodied. Which guitar is more comfortable to play for longer?

    • @JasonMckellMusic
      @JasonMckellMusic  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yep thats a couple of really good points, The Furch is really green but I have read that cedar sounds pretty open immediately and doesn't change so much. Not sure on that. I think they are both amazing guitars.
      The Guitar most comfortable to play longest is the lil Guild.
      Furch neck is great so that would be next it's very soft feeling for a slightly longer scale but the body is noticeably larger not as comfortable. (splitting hairs here)
      The Yamaha is fine as well but I find the neck shape a little smaller feeling compared to the others (bugger all) and probably more shape than actual size, I tend to fatigue a little more.. without the side by side I would never notice and any of them would be ideal..

    Have both the FSX5 and Furch yellow gc-cr. Both awesome guitars and very different. I have a slight preference to the Furch because i love the warm, bassy tone from the cedar/rosewood. Although, if im wanting a more vintage tone, im grabbing the yammie.
    No way that guitar should have been shipped without a case. Its a pity because the furch gigbag is quite nice and their hardshell hiscox case is one of the best cases on the market. The dealer definitely sould be held accountable for that. Should try get them to knock a few extra dollars off. Still, they're both lovely guitars.

    • @JasonMckellMusic
      @JasonMckellMusic  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hey man , interesting everyone seems to be saying similar things about the vintage vibe the Yamaha has, it's how I hear it swell.
      Man I bet the Yellow Furch must really be a monster!.. thats a couple of steps up from mine.
      You know I feel like I'm being a bit petty but the way the guitar was shipped, the lack of even the gig bag and the fact that the shop didn't even reply to my email regarding the issue I had with the guitar kinda put me off the brand.
      I know logically it's an awesome guitar and the people at Furch I dealt with were really nice but I just don't ever play it now.

  • @Lalairu
    @Lalairu 4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Both guitars sound good. The Yamaha sounds warmer, but the Furch has more highs and has like... more room?. It is really a matter of preferences and frequencies... sometimes you need a little bit more of brightness. Also, if you bought the Furch recently it might need some time to open up and settle. I bought a Sigma 00015m a year ago and the improvement is abismal (considering the price of course, just solid top but very nice guitar nevertheless...), and I have discovered that Martin strings go pretty nicely with this model in particular. Sorry if I made mistakes, English isn't my mother language. Have you tried the Yamaha L6? Cheers!

    • @JasonMckellMusic
      @JasonMckellMusic  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Hi no I haven't tried the L6 but I'm sure its a very nice guitar. I have a friend with a Sigma think it's an OM but all solid. Fantastic guitar for the money and took quite a while to settle down, it's his favourite guitar.
      Yes the Furch needs some miles. The Yamaha has opened up beautifully over the time I've had it. I think even six moths of regular playing and the Furch will be richer for sure. Yes it has a little projection in the room over the Yamaha but not the warmth. Both very nice though.
      and hey your English is perfect.. so no problem at all. Thanks

    Jason, loving your no bull very conversational style; am coming down to Adelaide (from Alice Springs) for Womadelaide and was thinking of getting an F 5 as I dropped my 40 yr old FG 335 directly on it's end from almost 2 Metres which lifted the top and loosened some braces. That is a guitar that sits around the house to rehearse and have fun with but after doing my best to glue it , it's lost it's reliability so I'm in the market and hearing the Furch means there's another horse in the race. The cedar and slightly bigger body shape is a good reason for difference; also the Yammy strings sound like they've more use on them - is that so? I prefer the Furch in the video slightly as it's big sounding yet articulate and it'll mellow enough in time ; I also like wider string spacing and the cedar sound . (I've a cedar Takamine)
    What model Furch is it?
    Keep up the great vids and playing.

      Hey Ross Derringers have an Fs5 in stock atm I reckon, last time I looked think it was $1850 which seems really good.
      Yes you're right the about the strings but it wouldn't have been much more use just the Furch strings would have had very little use as I hadn't been playing it.
      Oh yeah man the Furch string spacing is real comfortable I'll give it that and Imagine with the same amount of playing time as the Yamaha it will mellow heaps.
      They are both amazing guitars by any standard and really very comparable on so many levels.

    The Yamaha sounds more mellow and bluesy, the Furch seems more open and bright. Of the two, the Yamy sounds more like a guitar that would seem more at home on the radio in the 40s and more together if that makes sense. Both are great instruments but for me it’s Yamaha every time. Btw, I have a Guild M20 and it’s my favorite guitar by a mile. Hope the year is going great so far. Cheers.

    Preferred the Yamaha. I've looked at Furchs, and I wanted to like them, but just like most Taylors and Martins, they don't do it for me. They both sound quite different, but the Furch sounds "beige", no character, like most Taylors and Martins I've tried. Furch needs to be played in, it may open up. I've actually never played a bad Yamaha, to be honest! I have a Yamaha classical and two basses, all three are top drawer. Don't think it'll make a difference on stage. Your Yamaha has gotten glossy because of wear, wherever it's rubbed you're polishing it, lol! Satin finishes are just lighter gloss finishes. You can get rid of the gloss by roughing it up with 400 or 600 grit sandpaper, but you may not like the results.

      Yeah I have to agree about Yamaha's I haven't played a bad one, can't get along with the narrow string spacing is really the only reason I've let them alone.
      As soon as I saw the looks of the FS5 I wanted it. Then I read the specs and... 1 3/4 nut!!! are you kidding me...take my money!.. No Brainer
      I was thinking blend prep and a grey scourer but to be honest it's looking aged and cool and apart from maybe some nickel tuners again some day I'll just leave it be and enjoy it👌
