Re Havertz runs in behind - as I said at 7:13 he CAN do them but it’s about where his best work comes, & for me that’s drifting wide and linking, creating space for others.

One of the main problems is the lack of vertical passes through the middle. Almost always a ball goes out to Saka on the right, occasionally to the other wing to Martinelli. Rice almost never produces a vertical pass that opens up the opposing defence. Jorghino can do so but he doesn't play very often and probably even less next year. Rice is an excellent tackler but he needs to work more on his passing.

    • @effayeyeayzed

Rice at West Ham used to ping balls across all the time, funnily enough Martinelli and Saka seem to be really good bringing down a high ball but don't get to because of Arteta. Arteta seems to be really particular and wants to kill teams with frustrating tiki taka and possession, especially with the demands every player has in the XI the midfield instructions seem to be really strict.

    • @RansomMemoryAccess
      @RansomMemoryAccess 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

@@effayeyeayzed West Ham plays counter-attacking football, and a disorganized opponent makes progressing the ball much easier, a whole different situation than the usual low-block Arsenal faces. Despite being an excellent ball-winner, Rice is a mediocre passer, making him less suited as a DM. This forces Ødegaard to drop deep to aid in build-up play. Both Partey and, particularly, Jorginho are better at progressing the ball than Rice. Arsenal's biggest flaw is the lack of a great defensive playmaker, particularly one who could activate the left-wing.

Tiki taka and possession keeping are not the problem.
Iniesta, Xavi, Busquets, KDB, DavidSilva, BernardoSilva, Foden, Palmer, Rodri, Fernandinho, Thiago, Cazorla dribble a lot, and a lot of them play in a tiki taka possession system.
Central carries/dribbling in the midfield is risky, but it is extremely rewarding.
If you have great technical players, then the risks are minimised and the rewards are maximised. If you don’t have top class technical players, then it’s the other way round.

Sometimes Arteta sticks with his favourites - who cost us , Jesus, Zinchenko, even at time Havertz. Often we could do with swapping out Saka. Always a huge fan of your content and the way you analyse the team, buddy. Thanks for the frequent content and your insights.
I do think we have a team who should be able to win the title based on the profiles we have at the moment, I think Arteta's personal evolution is going to be the next major breakthrough. No manager has come in and done it straight away (Mourinho as an assistant to Robson, Klopp with Mainz, the main exception being Pep with Barcelona B who won things immediately, and proceeded to do the same at the main team), and their big successes usually came after a lot of trial and error, development of tactics, and learning in and from different people. I think Arteta had his Mourinho evolution under Pep, is going through his Klopp evolution at Arsenal now, and we can see he's getting closer and closer to getting it spot on, with major tweaks in the first few years giving way to minor adjustments over the past couple of seasons.
I firmly believe the staff will have reviewed the mid-block issue this season and have a plan for it, and it's about how we adapt to the next major problem we face. Arteta's already improved here too, though, as we no longer see the string of 2-3 losses every time we come up against a different tactic anymore.

I've always felt that in games where we struggle to break down the opposition, an easy choice to cause a difference would be to swap the 8's on the field for a few minutes. Getting Rice Ødegaard to be more fluent in positioning would surely do something without upsetting the defensive status quo much. Often sense we're too afraid break up the one thing that always works(Ødegaard-Saka-whoever plays RB at the day). Are we neglecting the fact that Ødegaard used to be a 10? Or just tell Martin to dribble the ball again every so often, as a younger player he would do that constantly with success, feels like it's been coached out of him in favor of being possession centric and overly "safe".

Central carries/dribbling in the midfield is risky, but it is extremely rewarding.

Just remember when Ødegaard broke through as a super talent at age 15, his main ability was to break the line through technical prowess alone. Nowadays his focus has become so singular in creative passing and distribution thats its almost been forgotten what he can do with the ball in his feet.
Granted, this can be due to Saka doing exactly that, leaving Ødegaard with the facilitator role, but it's become somewhat predictable that he isn't gonna dribble into the box even thou he used to be spectacular at it.

ie TAA, Salah & Mane being prioritised over Wijndaldum, Ferminho
KdB, Haaland, Rodri over Bernardo, Doku, Foden
Vini Jr. & Benzema (other season) to Vini Jr, Rodrygo & Jude (last season), LHS heavy dynamics but not any less effective due to the quality of the players.
Being predictable isn't bad if the opposition can't stop you either way.
Get Saka to dictate the offence more and Martinelli to take the most number of shots in the final third because they are our best creator and finisher (with the widest variety of finishes) at the club.

All Arsenal need is a proper centre forward to hit early.
No switching, no ball carrying, keep it simple.
The reason Arsenal struggled was because they became too predictable for teams who set up to defend and there was no disruptive and dangerous centre forward to pull centrebacks out of position, hold the ball up and create space and play in the wingers in behind. All of Arsenal's moves came from infront of the opposition. It can work if the team synergy is perfect and all the passes and movement are quick and snappy, but it's not going to work in every single game - that's where you need your big players, and in particular, big strikers!
All they have to do to make an immediate impact is buy a world class top quality centre forward who scares defences. Arsenal haven't had one of those since Robin Van Persie left! Aubameyang was good I suppose, but they bought him on his way down.
That's just the start, there's obviously more they need to get, but that will make a big difference.
We're coming into July and I see nothing, it's already not looking promising.
Arsenal need to be busier than this, you would expect a team who finished 2nd twice in a row through only through dropping silly points, to be alot more active, there should have been transfers by now, whether those were ins or outs!

    • @FinsburyPhil
      @FinsburyPhil 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

So what are all the other top transfers that have been made? There has also been a lull this year because of many clubs figuring out what they need to do to meet PSR rules. You can't sell if other clubs aren't ready to buy.

Alex, can you do a video on what we lost by selling Xhaka? (If you don’t agree the team’s lost something following his departure, then ignore this comment)
When I think back to most of the 2022/23 league season, I remember a team with a great deal of balance and chemistry, fair to say we didn’t show that level of balance in 2023/24, I’d like to know exactly why because I have a feeling losing Xhaka might be a great part - some well known people have said we are more predictable in 23/24 like Tuchel said Arsenal are a team who builds up on the right and finishes on the left. We all agree but in 22/24 I wouldn’t say that, we had a preference to build on the right with Saka and Ö but could do so on the left with Xhaka and Martinelli.

We lost a lot of creativity without Jesus, Zinchenko and Partey. (Timber, Fabio, ESR injuries also doesn’t help)
Rice is not Busquets, Kimmich, FDJ, Fernandinho in the midfield.
Havertz is not Aguero, Suarez, Firmino, Sanchez, Jesus, Trossard, VanPersie as a striker, and he is not Iniesta, Modric, Thiago, Cazorla, Pedri, Musiala, Gavi, Foden, Palmer in the midfield.
      They both lack creativity.
And with Tomiyasu or Kiwior on the ball, we are forever passing between Rice and our defenders without any meaningful ball progression. They are not Cancelo, Zinchenko, Guerreiro, RicoLewis.

Last season, we had a period mid season failing to open up low block, costing us a lot of points.
Later in the season, a lot of games are won by us scoring a set piece first, so the opponent start to open up more.
But in open play, we lack creativity.

For me it's not having a left back, Timber and Tomiyasu are the only left backs and Timber's right footed and neither are natural left backs. Personally for me Jorrel Hato should be the priority, rapid, over lap and under lap, can cross a ball and dribble. Although he would be very young. He's very similar to Timber but also has a much higher ceiling.
I also believe Arsenal need a conductor to sit next to Rice, like how Kante had prime Jorginho next to him
