  • Old Walnut Street in Louisville was once the hub for the African-American business community. It's heyday was from the 1930's to the 50's until the city adopted an urban renewal approach and destroyed the old commercial center. This is the story of what once was, what is there now and what the future might hold.

That was a ruddy good short documentary. It made a point very well without overdramatising. Brilliant work - something that will make me think about my next Louisville investment. Thank You

"Urban Renewal" is the first example of political-speak double talk I can remember. It sounds so wholesome; What could go wrong?

I kinda know how the former residents feel. Highland Park got "bought out" by the airport in 1990 and everyone was forced to move. Abramson was mayor at the time, he called our neighborhood "blighted" and made it seem like he was doing us a favor by offering us chump change for our properties. We were all pretty much lower middle class families but we kept our little neighborhood clean and cute. It was like a rough version of Mayberry lol. I still dream about it a lot. And after 30+ years, the airport still hasn't done anything with about 85% of the land. It's heartbreaking, a lot of the outlines of foundations and sidewalks are still faintly visible.

My neighbor owned a liquor store on market street around Preston street and at one time it was a thriving area till urban renewal came in and tore down all the old buildings. Once the people are gone the area is dead.

Corporations and local government ruined it. What’s new?

Keep this story in mind everytime a government program sounds too good to be true.

Louisville pushed all the black people away from downtown, and now downtown is 90% dead.

The same thing happened to every city. The white people move to the suburbs and they build malls close to their homes. No more trips downtown. The downtown deteriorates and there is a doughnut effect.

"It became a high poverty, high crime area..." or it was DESIGNED to be that and operated as such!
