      @@RichardHan Hello Richard! Do you have any idea where students (fall 2021 intake) can find textbooks to read the course / syllabus for their course before coming to University? I am part of the MIB Co-op course at UTSC for fall 2021 intake. So, I was wondering if there are some textbooks or particular topics that you would recommend for students to read before arriving at university. Do you have an idea as to where I could find links to the textbooks for the courses that I am a part of? Please let me know. Really appreciate it. By the way, I love your videos. I think if you were one of those high schoolers who actually had to work for your grades, it won't be as much of a shock. As a 4th year who did lifesci I think the biggest challenge is time management and making time to keep on top of all of the material throughout the semester. The difficulty of the work itself wasn't terrible (except for some chem/math/this 3rd year lab course I did).
    With regards to competition, the lifesci classes in first year were honestly so huge that it didn't feel like a cut-throat setting. My high school honestly felt more competitive bc everyone knew who the "smart kids" were. I felt like there were overall plenty of very friendly people here (course group chats, fb study groups, easy to just say hi and make friends with people near you) and that really comes out in your smaller upper-year classes.
    Literally the worst part was just time management (especially when you have three midterms within two days) and focusing in lecture as someone with ADHD/depression

    I was very lucky going into U of T engineering first year because I had decently hard teachers in high school that cemented my study habits, but even then it was tough because they deliberately try to weed out students in first year with difficult tests and the material was hard to digest at certain points. The most important thing for midterms and stuff like that is to make sure you're better than the average so then you can ride the curve to glory :)

    tbh UofT can be hard or easy depends on what your highschool background is and what is your attitude towards studies. All my highschool friends got admitted to schools that were a lot better than uoft rotman (Ex. yale, upenn, ucla, Uchicago etc..) and I think uoft is just a breeze comparing to the ivy leagues. The biggest regret for me is that i kinda just screwed around in highschool and ended up in a good school but not the best that I know I can achieve. So i think if anyone is willing to try and give effort to studying then UofT will be a breeze for them too.

    With the rigor of UFT considered, is it worth attending if it can damage your chances of being accepted into grad school?

    • @RichardHan
      @RichardHan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      First of all thank you for your kind words, and Great question. So there are definitely pros and cons of going to UofT if you are thinking of going to a grad school in the future. As you already know, its very hard to get good grades in University of Toronto and to go to grad schools you need good undergrad GPA. So if you go to a university that is not as rigorous as UofT , that may put you in a better spot in terms of marks. However UofT will well prepare you for grad schools because you will already be trained on how to work under immense work load at UofT. It builds you a great mentality and I think that's the biggest thing they teach you at UofT. With that being said I think its totally worth it to attend UofT because of networking and the university experience as a whole. I don't regret coming to UofT at all and it definitely opened so many opportunities for me that I am very thankful for. So think about these pros and cons, and think about what you really want to learn in undergrad. I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish you the best of luck in the future!

    I recently got accepted for Co-op arts&sci program but I'm not sure whether I should accept the offer or not since it is not my first choice program. Do you know anything about arts&sci program?? Also is it difficult to change the program once you get into uni??

    • @RichardHan
      @RichardHan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First of all thank you for your kind words I really appreciate them, so Art&Sci is one big branch of study that includes multiple studies. It includes studies like psychology, biology, chemistry, business (Rotman Commerce) and many more. Once you are accepted as an Art&Sci student you can choose to major and minor in the studies they provide in Art&Sci. So I suggest that you look into the studies they offer in Art&Sci before accepting your offer. I am not too sure if its more difficult to change the program once you are in university but at least for Rotman Commerce I heard its harder to get into the program once you are in university. I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!

    Hey, this is really useful! I've applied for the Lester B Pearson scholarship and if I get it I'll probably have to maintain 'high academic standing'. How hard is it to keep your GPA high? What's an average GPA like?

    • @RichardHan
      @RichardHan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      This is a great question, so I would like to first say that the difficulty of maintaining a high GPA depends on the program or courses you are currently taking. Some courses have a harder work load compared to others so its pretty hard to generalize the difficulty of keeping your GPA high (or average GPA) for all programs. However that being said I can tell you its pretty hard to keep your GPA high for most programs (UofT is known for its rigorous work load) and a good GPA would be considered anything above 3.5 (Since dean's list is anything above 3.5). I really hope that you get the scholarship and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!

    Is it safe to say that if you do the required work and review/study your class material every day, you will do excel at UofT or does that just make you an average student? Or, is it still difficult to achieve good marks even then?

    • @RichardHan
      @RichardHan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question, so just like every other thing in life if you but the work and effort into studying you will be able to excel or at least be an average student at UofT. So if you can keep up with all the required work, read the textbook and review your class notes everyday than you should be fine. I will say that its harder to get better grades at the University of Toronto but if you are committed and determined, you will do good. My parents really don't want to pay an extra 20,000 a year when I could go to an in state school for 10,000 USD a year. I know you're not an international student, but do you know anyone or have any advice on how I can make this work? Student loans may be an option but I also dont want to be in debt until I'm 30. Any advice?

      Great question, first of all I totally understand how expensive tuition can be especially if you are an international student. Unfortunately it will be hard for me to connect you with any international student who currently goes to uoft. However I will definitely try to make more videos for international students who are trying to apply to uoft in the future. I would strongly recommend you to apply for scholarships (uoft has so many scholarships available to international students). Also remember that you don't have to only apply for scholarships in uoft, look for other organizations that give out scholarships as well. Lastly I am pretty sure uoft has financial aid department as well so I would recommend you to look into that as well. I hope I was able to help a little and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish you the best of luck in your future!

Generally speaking the first round of midterms happen in October, the second round of midterms happen in November and finals happen in December. Second semester is the same as well. Pearson International scholarships. I got a scholarship to finish my high school here but now I'm worried about Universities and whether my family will be able to afford it or not. I have decent extra-curricular activities and good grades. Just for back up, if I'm unable to afford Universities in Ontario, which province would you say has the best balance of affordibility and quality of life? I truly hope I'll be able to get it but you know like they say "Hope for the best, prepare for the worst". You're awesome :)

    • @RichardHan
      @RichardHan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      First of all thank you for your kind words, it really motivates me to make more videos in the future! and yes I know that tuition and other expenses can get pretty hefty here. I don't know which province will provide you both quality of life and affordability at the same time, but if you are looking for both of those traits you may or may not have to sacrifice the quality of education. Before coming to UofT I wondered why the tuition is so expense here, and how it still manages to attract thousands of students around the world each year. I think its because of the opportunities, education and network you will be gaining from this university. Since I haven't looked into universities in other provinces other than Ontario and BC I am not too sure which province will provide affordability and quality of life at the same time. Remember there are always pros and cons to everything. I am pretty sure there is a financial help sector in UofT and I also know the government helps lots of students with their tuition so I suggest that you look into those as well. Thank you again for your kind words and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!

    Hi! Do you know what grading system they use at UofT when accepting students? A website said that the average GPA that gets accepted is 3.8, but what percentage will that be in numbers??

    • @RichardHan
      @RichardHan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Great question, although I am not too sure what grading system they use in the admission process but GPA of 3.8 is equal to mid 80s in UofT GPA system (since anything above 85 is considered to be a 4.0 at UofT). However this will be different if they are talking about the general GPA system, if 4.0 (A) is 93%+ 3.8 will be low 90s. I know this is a little confusing but I hope it made sense. However I will tell you that Uoft definitely selects academically successful students. I also didn’t take any sciences in high school but I still got admitted to uoft so as long as you don’t need sciences as the prerequisite for the program you want to go into, I think it should be fine. I intend to do a Industrial Engineering program. I don't know if it helps on the application, but here are some of my qualities: -I love running; - I speak three languages ( starting a 4th); - I'll start a volunteer work this year at my school; - I'll join a course/"volunteer job" at a non-profit org.; - every year I participate on a internship program that I pick the profession I may want to try and experience it for 1 week . I want to start off by saying how happy I am see younger students like you who are determined to do great things at the University of Toronto. Its very nice to see that you are planning ahead and pushing yourself to get the scholarship. So yes I certainly do think you have a good chance of getting the scholarship. Extracurricular activities are definitely a plus in your application. However, I would like to say that consistency/commitment of your extracurricular is very important. They like to see that you were consistent and committed to your extracurricular rather than to see you quieting after 3 months. So I suggest that you build up on your extracurricular from where you volunteered/worked the most. Make sure to mention all your hobbies and strengths, and make it into a compelling story! I know my video "How I got into University of Toronto & UBC" is about university applications but some of the things I talk about in that video will definitely help you in this situation. • @RichardHan
      @RichardHan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      First of all congratulations and great question. So I know many of my UofT friends came without knowing what majors to pursue, so you are not alone here. So in their first year they took bunch of introductory courses (100 level courses) to see what they are interested in. Most prerequisites are 100 level courses and this is perfect because once you find an interest in a 100 level course, you probably already completed some prerequisites already. Also there aren't any required classes so try taking lots of introductory courses to find what you are interested in. • @RichardHan
      @RichardHan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@justsomegirlwithoutamustac5837 Great question, so it really depends on what program/major you are in. So a person in life sciences will have different amount of introductory courses than a business school student (They are obviously going to be taking different classes as well). As a Rotman commerce student I took four 100 level courses which were required and 2 other 100 level courses as my electives. Student's necessarily don't "fight" to get into popular courses but rather for better professors. There are usually spaces available for students who want to take a certain course because a course can be taught by multiple professors (Especially a popular course). There are academic advisers at UofT who can help you out with your classes as well. I hope I was able to answer your questions and thank you for your kind words. Great question, so I don't know if we are officially allowed to record lectures but I know lots of my friends do it. Some professors are kind enough to record their lectures and post them online for you, but I think it all depends on the professor. I am not too sure what the official rule with the whole "recording the lecture" thing is but many students do it. I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish you the best of luck in the future!

      It depends on the professor, some of them are very particular about it. It is always safest to go talk to the professor during the first lecture/email them and confirm with them whether they are okay with you recording the lectures.

      I’ve asked a lot of professors (I’m a third year in life sci and I’ve done this since second year) and the answer is almost always this: you can take an audio recording, you can’t always share it. Some professors are okay with sharing, some aren’t and their issue is typically that it might be shared elsewhere.

      If you’re looking for a great kin program I would suggest York U’s specialized honours Kin and health sciences program. There are also other kin programs at Western and Macmaster. I went to York University for it and I saw some of my friends who transferred over from Kin and Physed at U of T to York. York’s program provides you with 2 degrees in one and is more specialized in comparison to what U of T offers. I went on to complete Physio school and found that my classmates that graduated from Western, York, McMaster actually had more knowledge because they were provided with a more variety of courses in their 3rd and 4th especially. I am saying this from experience, U of T is a good grad school but not good for undergraduate since you are bound to make mistakes. You learn from them so you’re better of going to university that will not be as hard in marking while you learn those key studying skills in the first 2 years. Don’t get me wrong, York was equally hard. It did try to weed out it’s kin students as it was a specialized honours program and required you to maintain a certain average. But they weren’t out there to get you like U of T. Now the decision is upto you would you rather go to a school that would “make you ready for Grad school” but not actually help you get in OR would you rather go to a school that aids in your ability to develop those skills and get you somewhere.

    • @RichardHan
      @RichardHan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question, so I definitely think learning how to write proper essays will help a lot in university. However I would like to say that some studies will require you to write more essays than others, so it also kinda depends on what you want to study as well. Even if you don't know how to write proper essays right now, you will eventually learn how to write good essays in university. I also didn't know how to write a proper essay but I was able to learn it as I worked on my essays at UofT. So I say its important but at the same time don't stress about it too much. • @RichardHan
      @RichardHan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Great question, so I would first recommend to wait a little. Make sure to check when the dead line to accept your first offer and if the University of Toronto doesn't send you an offer for engineering by that date, you should accept that first offer. During this time of the year UofT will soon send out a second round offer to students, so I think waiting for your engineering offer is a good idea. However I would like to emphasize that you should check when the dead line for your first offer is and make sure to take that offer before the dead line if UofT doesn't send an offer from engineering. I hope I was able to help and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!

    Question: should you go to uoft for your undergrads if you are planning for graduate studies?

    • @RichardHan
      @RichardHan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great question, so there are definitely pros and cons of going to UofT if you are thinking of going to a grad school in the future. So think about these pros and cons, and think about what you really want to learn in undergrad. I hope I was able to answer your questions and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish you the best of luck in the future!

    • @krzysztofmaksyminko8657

      Depends on the program. Some programs at UofT are rather basic on the Undergrad level but pretty good and unique for Grad school. I'm doing my MA in Hispanic linguistics and not many universities offer what the department does on the grad level (undergrad is super basic). Sciences like biology and genetics are amazing at both Bachelor and Master's level. It all comes down to what you want to study. You'll also need letter of recommendation for grad school and it's always better to get them from the university you're planning to attend or at least someone the department knows really well l. My undergrad was not at UofT but I had a lot of much needed experience that made my application look good for grad school

    I'm going to apply for the next year. I don't get when the application is open? They only wrote the deadlines. Also I'm only interested in mathematics or physics and maybe both.. Is this a good thing to study there? I knew about the double major thing but it's said that I can't double major in mathematics and physics because it's already available in the faculty of arts and science as specialist.. Do I need to take tests like SAT or just the English profiency test with my high school grades? Also, it's said that there are no scholarships for international students, is this true?

      Great question, so the application will probably open sometime in October (which was the case for me) but make sure to keep checking their page. Generally speaking all the studies in UofT are very strong so I would say its a good place to study math and physics as well. I hope I was able to help and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!

      @@rahmael-hamouly7485 Oh sorry I didn't see your other questions, so I am not sure about the double major question. However if the university said that you can't double major in them since there is a specialist for it, I would guess that that's the case. I am pretty sure you don't need SAT but if you are an international student you need to take the English proficiency test and your high school marks should be fine. There are scholarships available for international students as well, some of my friends are international students and they got some hefty scholarships so make sure to look for them. Don't just look for the scholarships they offer at the university there are a lot more options out side of university as well. Lastly if you are already taking university there, you should be able to transfer those credits to UofT. However if UofT doesn't offer a similar course as the one you took, they may not transfer it, so keep that in mind. I hope I was able to help and if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!

    What are your opinions on the three different campuses and their pros, cons, and overall vibes

    • @RichardHan
      @RichardHan  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      This is a tough question to answer, so since I have only been in St. George campus its really hard to tell you the pros and cons of each campuses. However I know that each campus offers different programs and studies. I like the vibe at St. George campus, its considered as the main campus and there are lots of buildings with beautiful aesthetics (Not saying other campuses don't have this feature). Sorry for my poor answer but if you have any further questions please let me know. I wish the best of luck to you in the future!

      In a nutshell, St. George: downtown busy with on-campus calm. Scar: suburb, you want a car, open. Miss: everything is one building, which is nice, you need a car, or take the UTM shuttle.
