- The CBS reality show Undercover Boss has seen its fair share of heartwarming moments over the years, as bosses reveal themselves to employees and give them the money, promotions, or education they need to better their lives. However, some viewers have wondered how authentic the show actually is, as some of the drama seems forced and staged.

Depends on the people, I mean logically you would think that but some people have their own reasons for doing it like getting it out of the way, it being a point of pride,etc. One of my co workers told me everything about her 2 miscarriages as well as her stance on religious during my first 2 weeks there. another one told me everything about many kids she had (she takes pride in their amount) my boss constantly tells me all his problems and even exaggerates them so I dont ask for a raise,time off,etc he will always come back with "I dont have the money, I paid for my daughters thing remember" or "you will have to do it, you know how overworked Iam",etc. Still I dont feel like it would be happening often enough to sustain a show.

I wouldn't want to be the manager left to deal with the aftermath of this show. Staff morale would be crushed by the way one employee is singled out, made to look like an angel, and then showered with gifts at the end.
I always find it suspicious that every person the boss works under for the day has a sob story worst than the next.

Most people have some kind of sob story somewhere in their past, it's not exactly uncommon. Pick a group of 10 people and I wouldn't be surprised if a couple have had a family member die or fall ill, or have had some kind of personal disaster happen in the last couple years. Bad shit happens to a lot of people.

Have you ever noticed canned onions don't peel so good? The employees they select are always too similar. One employee is an honest joe/jolene who by gosh golly works their tail off to feed their kid, and walks 12 miles to work. They get a new car. Another employee is the rebel, who ends up getting mentored by the benevolent boss, and free schooling or the like.
I remember catching a re-run of Undercover Boss. I can't remember what company (but I think it was a music oriented company), but I remember I was shocked. A guy who worked for the company for seven years and had put his two weeks notice in was training him. He told his story, it was sad of course. And the Boss thought he was a hard worker he didn't want to lose. So he offered his incentives to stay (and turn down a great job for another company). He accepted. And at the end of the episode, it turns out the Boss decided to close the plant (where this guy had worked) and this guy was fired instead of transferred. So he lost his job, the lucrative job offer, and had to take part time work for the other company just to support his family.
Sucks to be that guy :)

depending on the conversation in which the Boss 'pulled him back' that is obviously on Camera; he could possibly find grounds... especially if Promises were Made... and if he was given the chance to stay employed at a second site... But if that site was a reasonable commute and he refused he loses his standing
After watching several episodes, there is no way I'm believing current employees pour out their heart and soul of their lives to the new person. They know it's him/her.

I believe if you work for a company who actually cares for you and you're an act good employee and a nice person they'll treat you right and help you out anyways they can. I know the company I work (industrial scrap and demo) take care of there own. the owners give people so much and care for them it's crazy! I realize most aren't like this but there are some who are.

It always pissed me off when bosses see staff are under pressure, underpaid, under appreciated, usually don't have the correct tools and all kinds of issues. Then they help out one or two people, whilst the rest of their staff which would numbers in the thousands or millions are still fucked.

Agreed. It seems sleazy since it's something sexual, but she's under contract to as an employee to wear the uniform no mater what it may be. Plus she knew she'd be on the show and would have signed a contract to do so and likely collect a paycheck from the show for doing so. If she wasn't willing to represent the company as expected she never should have agreed to be on the show. Period. She also made it pretty clear she didn't want to work there so she got what was coming to her, I don't feel bad for her.

The employer was upset with her because she was over serving booze to customers who were clearly drunk and should've been cut off, and to top it off she acknowledge what she was doing wasn't right but didn't really care.
That alone was cause for employment termination.
It's an amazing coincidence that every single employee on the show has some sob story they can't wait to share.
I like how every episode is the same and how everyone has a sob story and how they open up to the new employee (the boss) even though they met like 5 minutes ago, with said sob story.

I don't like that show because I feel that the boss doesn't learn anything or finds anything useful to improve the business. it always ends with the boss getting emotionally attached to the selected employees and giving them gifts

What I don't understand, and why I believe that is show is staged is because I can't for the life of me fathom how the producers get these employees to tell what they believe is some random stranger their complete life story including their deep dark secrets and painful life experiences after only knowing them for just a few hours?
I firmly believe that everyone doesn't have your best interest at heart so telling folks who your hardly know your secrets on your job can be very dangerous and lead to some problems down the road.
Honestly if another co-worker has experience going though the same thing that can lead to a good healthy friendship but that's a BIG if.
Well it depends on how social they are. I find myself striking up a conversation with random store clerks all the time, it starts off customer service related. But then it goes into my personal life and theirs. One time, I was talking to this guy at a mall kiosk for like half an hour, to the point where he got a phone call from his boss to go on his lunch break which is what made me stop lol. I can talk to someone from opening to closing if someone had enough time for me, haha!
But I think for the most part, the employees probably only tell the coworkers information they feel comfortable sharing. As long as it is not bad stuff relating to being in debt, addiction/gambling, criminal/gang activity or anything that can be used against you... then I don't see anything wrong with small talk. I find it pretty common for people to ask about your family, how you grew up and the basic information to paint a picture about who you are. That's how you get to know someone.

I think it's because they're told it's for another show, but some people have been catching on.
This show is fake. If you watch many episodes they are all the same. They all start by being bad at their job, in time they get to know a couple 'down and out employees'. They help those employees and say they will do better for the company. It's the exact same show every time. It's scripted of course. It's nonsense and not worth watching.

I worked for a company that got "Undercover Boss". They didn't really screen employees. They just told us the company would be on TV and that we could submit our story and what the company means to us. Then all of a sudden a few weeks later we saw we were on TV.
I saw that bar one and I was happy that the one woman had enough confidence, class and respect for herself not to put on a bikini top if it made her uncomfortable! Good for you girl!!!
Bonnie Lee she shouldn't have to work without a shirt if she wants to, but a restaurant that as a gimmick has servers in bikini doesn't have to keep employing her either.

The second your feelings start affecting your actions or performance though......you change or you're gone.

I have had quite a few jobs involving wearing some kind of uniform. When people bitch or complain I usually see it as them talking to the uniform, not to me as a person.
In any other situation most of these people would realize that I am simply doing my job, and I forgive them for not being able to see it objectively in that particular situation. :)
When it comes to what kinds of situation one chooses to focus on.....well, in my experience that is simply a matter of perspective and a bit of practice. :)
I never worked fast food or in the restaurant business. On the outside, I see them put up with some real asswholes. Just real heck from customers and employers. They have a right to hate customers as long as they don't harm them. What is more likely, a customer treating employees like poop or the employee? One needs the job and the other does not. The employee does not want to be fired but there is only so much one can take.
I am sure a lot of those bosses know that standing up for an employee who is wronged or a customer who is wronged equals big business.
Undercover Boss is the biggest load of crap I've ever seen. Even if everything about each episode is legit (which I highly doubt it is) then the fact that a few "choice" employees out of 100's (even 1000's) of other deserving workers get rewarded for their "hard lives" is so infuriating! I guarantee you that for every employee who is rewarded a new car, or college tuition, or any other monetary payment there are many more employees right behind them who will never be recognized. CEO's of large corporations do not care one iota about their employees personal struggles, they are only concerned with their profits and media exposure (as long as the exposure shows them in a good light).
I agree , all workers should get more pay anyway and benefits is so important.
the careing and rewards are free adverts and make them the good guy - they go inn as careing and the good guy + hero but only for a selected few to fit the show
Every episode I watched seemed so phony due to the fact that the employees were always singing the praises of their job, boss and company.
It's only 40 minutes of material an episode, maybe 30 of that is on the job, and the bosses often go to multiple locations, and encounter many employees. They simply cut together the 30 minutes they want, which is usually showing one bad employee, a few good employees, and showing the boss work. At the end, it always shows the boss with a huge crowd of employees, many which probably were recorded, but were not interesting enough to use.
They don't know they're in front of their boss, but they do think they're on TV. Regardless of how much someone hates their job, they wouldn't go around bad mouthing it on national television. That can get you fired.

It's kinda like when the husband tells the wife to "act surprised" when he had to tell her about the surprise party her friends were throwing because of a schedule conflict or the house needed tidying up. The friends don't know she is acting the same as the boss or the network don't know the employees have busted them USING THE SAME OLD TRICK!
They could make it more real with HIDDEN body cams, HIDDEN cams in plants, artwork, spaces between ceiling tiles, etc. Camera technology has gotten TINY AS HELL! There is no reason for a huge crew to follow the workers around. I think the viewers would gladly trade camera phone quality, which is actually gotten pretty good these days, for a GENUINE SHOW!

Either you're young or you've gotten lucky with good jobs because a lot of people suffer through shitty careers! Generally because they can't find new work that pays as well or that has the benefits they need etc. I know right now I'm dealing with a verbally abusive boss. I'm actively looking for new work but I can't just up and quit with nothing to back me up! I defended myself today against him but nothing will change.

I was just aboutto comment that as well. I actually own one of the classic 30 amps they were building on the show. When the endcards played saying that they screwed over everyone in the company, it made me like it just a bit less.

Mikey Gio watch the episode on Peavey. But make sure that you watch the entire episode, especially the ending. I owned a Peavey Backstage Plus 30 when I was a teenager. I will never own anything that Peavey makes ever again after seeing how they treat their employees.
One time I was getting fired and I pulled a stunt and said "This is Undercover Boss!, You're fired!" The boss laughed and ended up working things out instead of canning me. Thanks Undercover Boss!

Not Undercover Boss but when I managed a place, the company owner came in one day when I was on duty and loved the job we all did and the relaxed atmosphere I had when running the place. Well, a year later we got a new district manager who came in and was the opposite, he hated everything I did, so he fired me. When the owner found out he was furious. The place was more profitable when I was working and the employees were happier. The DM had to call me and beg me to come back with a raise and an apology. The owner then fired the DM a few weeks later when he found out the DM had been firing managers to install his friends who would then start taking money from the restaurants and splitting it with him. So all of us think he fired me because he knew that I would either catch on to him or because I wouldn't go with his plan.

I work at Marco's Pizza. We were on Undercover boss, but they all knew way ahead. It was no secret. Since I was newly hired at the time, I wasn't allowed to work for a week because they didn't want me ruining the show because I wasn't warned and didn't sign anything. They ended up not using the footage of our store because it wasn't dramatic enough, even though everyone was switched around. The actual GM was just a normal employee and a shift lead was made the general manager and had to make up a sob story about his parents dying even though both of them are alive and well.
The show always seemed like a really long advertisement to me. "Oh look at our company, look how much we care about our employees. Now give us more money please."

I agree, nobody's going to act normal with a camera in their face, knowing that they will be on TV. I'm still convinced that Undercover Boss is staged. It just feels staged. Every episode has nearly the same sequence of events, like the employee with the sob story, the employee that talks smack about customers, and so on.
Yep. Don't forget the superstar employee who is outgoing and treats all the customers like family because she's been there for 15+ years but is still nothing more than an assistant manager at best! She's on every episode, too.
Seriously? Isn't the cover story explained at the beginning of every episode? Usually there's some excuse for the cameras to be there filming them. It's standard for shit like this.
I don't believe 90% of what I watch on reality shows but even I'm aware of why people don't seem to mind cameras hovering around them constantly.

Oh yeah, that's another one I forgot about, the superstar employee. There's one in every episode. The employee who is so awesome, in spite of the fact that they make barely above minimum wage and their employer treats them like human waste. It's just not believable.
Of course it's staged. The employees are literally told they're going to be on tv and clearly have already accepted that and gone over what needs to be gone over.
The question isn't whether it's staged, it's where the true nature of the show is obvious, and fun fact: when people are put under pressure, their ability to be detached and analytical, even if they possessed it to begin with, rapidly deteriorates. You put even a bit of pressure on me on the wrong day, and my brain turns to mush.

It's easy to forget how frustrating customers can be as you move up the ranks and do less ground work. Some managers do nothing but tidy up and ask "Hows it going?" so they forget or know nothing about what common workers do. So penalizing or firing people for hating customers is completely irrational and deserving of no respect for the company. Who who works a average to low paying job hasn't said they hated customers? I know I have, bitch are you seriously asking me if we sell water here? It's right behind you. Now piss off!

Not if you're within the confines of the work place. Only fake people will go full SJW and scold others for ranting about customers. If its a common everyday thing, fine sure. But if its every so often when you get a really bad customer, then no its a irrational response from a CEO who has forgotten the hardships of labored work. I've had on many occasions been asked to sanitize wipe an entire shopping kart because the customer worked at a daycare and was afraid of other peoples germs. It took a good few minutes to do it (not long) but its still another one of those asinine things customers do all the time.
The guy knew he was being filmed for a TV show and was in front of someone he thought was a new employee. I can't imagine a company that would keep someone that unprofessional. I've worked plenty of customer service, if you can't tolerate customers get a factory of construction job.
Yep... Customers can be complete asshats. Many employers forget that when you work with people, they can treat you like dirt. I have absolutely detested and hated every single job I've ever had that had me working directly with the public. Did I show up on time and do my job to the best of my ability? You bet your ass I did. If I was there to enjoy myself they wouldn't have had to pay me to come in. Curiously enough "enjoying smiling while people treat you like crap" was not part of my job descriptions, but people act like it should be. I am not an incredibly emotional person, but I remember breaking down in tears almost every day for months because I hated one of my jobs so much. I did my job, though, even though it was the most soul-crushing, demeaning experience I've ever had and would have enjoyed watching the place burn to the ground. There's nothing wrong with hating your customers if the customers don't know what you think of them. This is why I intend to work for myself once I get out of university. If I don't like a client, I can cut them off and never work for them again, or charge them a PITA tax (Pain in the Ass tax) to make putting up with them worth my while. I've done it before, I'll do it again lol
But telling your boss straight to their face that you "hate customers more than anything", when you deal with customers all shift is just ridiculous. My boss would have a serious talk with me if I said that to him and I don't even deal with the customers. It's called not being a psycho. Don't get me wrong, I don't like people, that's why I cook instead of serve, maybe that's what that guy should be doing instead of working around what he hates most about his job.

I've been a part of one of these stings. Every single solitary thing is staged - - - everything, every move, every act, everything that's said, and everything that's done. It was like rehearsing for a sitcom. And we were paid to not mention any of what I just mentioned. None of Undercover Boss is real. Everybody knows everything before the "boss" gets there.

I remember when I first found this show. I was interested so I tried a couple episodes. Didn't get far when I realized it's literally the same thing every time, just a different company.
Also, going undercover? There are very few companies who have CEOs that are huge in the limelight. Ask any employee of any random business that is "big" and they won't know who the "CEO" is or what they look like.

My favorite was Barry, the 24 hour retro fit CEO. He's a very nice guy. Who takes care of his workers. I cried at the end because I too lost my mother young and I just felt a connection with him. Very wholesome

I liked it until they did a episode for a company that I knew employees from and everything the boss said they would do never happened.

I lost interest after finding out one of the differences between the UK and U.S. versions is that the U.S. version has loyal employees who get by just fine, with employers tending to not be overly inconvenienced by the jobs they have to do, whereas in the UK version, the bosses find the work a lot harder and some of the employees' hardship is actually due to the employers' policies.
It's almost as if one of them is pro-corporate propaganda to make people feel better about their jobs.
I did too. IDK the last time I watched. It was all the same pattern. It's just too staged to me too. No way these employees don't know what's up. Always the one sob story, the one trying to move up, the 1 in school & the 1 that is a problem. Early on it was easier to buy. After so long I just can't buy these employees not knowing what it is.
It isn't sleezy to fire an employee for not wanting to wear a bikini at a novelty restaurant where that is the novelty aspect. That would be like refusing to wear a bathing suit as a lifeguard, or refusing to wear protective gear. It's part of the uniform. If I refuse to wear my uniform at my job, I won't have a job.
I get what you're saying about uniforms and having to wear bikinis, but I don't think they should be fired.
James LeBeau I mean, unless they can cook or otherwise work back of house, I don't see another alternative. Allowing her not to would undermind the novelty and make the other employees see it as special treatment. I honestly don't see what other job she could do if she won't wear the uniform.

This video and everyone else here got it wrong. I saw the episode. The employer was upset with her because she was over serving booze to customers who were clearly drunk and should've been cut off, and to top it off she acknowledge what she was doing wasn't right but didn't really care.

I actually flew on Frontier airlines after seeing them on Undercover Boss. I was really impressed by what I saw on the show.
What I EXPERIENCED was something TOTALLY different. My flights were cancelled a FEW times (I was put on a flight that would take me hours out of my way and have long layovers - without my permission. When I fought about it - I ended up with no other choice than to pay quite a bit extra to get on a flight equivalent to the one I originally was on. I mentioned to the manager on the phone that I purchased these tickets after seeing undercover boss...and he actually laughed and said, "we've been sold since then." Oh, i guess that makes this behavior ok then????). Even those flights were postponed for hours when they actually DID fly, and my luggage was lost for over a month (when I reported my luggage lost, the clerk actually berated me with "Maybe you THOUGHT you brought luggage, but you were mistaken and you left it behind" WHAT???). Since then I have heard from a number of folks that these exact things were happening to them as well. NEVER EVER FLY FRONTIER!!!

This show opened my eyes a little to American businesses work, I have worked in both the UK and Hong Kong and in both these places the bosses of the companies would always get their hands dirty and work along side with employees just like they do in the show.
However in America it seems the boss and the workers rarely interact.
I'm sorry that's lousy to fire a guy on the spot for saying he hated customers. People in the service industry hate customers because they're often rude. Let them hate the customer, if they do their job and put a smile on their face, don't fucking worry about what they tell their co-workers in private.
Yes, and I have worked in service industry and a lot of the customers suck big time, but you don't go telling that to the new guy on his first day, especially when there are cameras, and especially when you are supposed to be management.
He wasn't fired for saying he hates customers, he was fired for his general attitude. On the show he was acting like a piece of shit and not treating the customers with any respect whatsoever.
Kbrat ! See heres the thing about shows like this you have to consider, they're edited heavily, you can edit a multitude of sins out of a video and play final cut on TV. You can't really know if he was coerced into saying those things, yeah you can argue he shouldn't be saying it anyway, but theres only so much integrity you can expect out of someone working in fast food joint for less than 10 bucks an hour.
I remember one of these episodes a place I worked at, a call center (which are absolutely miserable places to work) made us watch to show how NOT to deal with customers at our company.. The video had this this CEO working in call escalations (when you get pissed when you call Dell and ask to speak a to a supervisor, that's who you're talking to- the call escalations department.). This woman was pissed about a dress I don't remember exactly what the circumstances were, but they chopped the video up to hell and made it look like this employee was completely horrible and rude, and then they showed a clip where the undercover CEO whispers to the call center employee "we got to make the customer happy" the employee does a soft mute on the phone and says "We can't make her happy" (cue dramatic sound effect and CEO making a face). Cut to a scene with the CEO in their little interview thing they do saying "you always have to make the customer happy". NO the employee was right, the policy is this, the call center employee is in a no win situation, if the policy says you can't give the customer what they want, and you do it anyway you're in trouble, if you tell the customer you cannot give them what they want, you're still in trouble. Its a no win situation and that CEO was typical jackass who thinks he can see the forest from the trees.
I actually found a TH-cam video from that employee talking about that whole show, she lost her job, and it was like I said from her perspective a no-win situation, and yes she said it was edited down that showed a few frustrated, perhaps ill advised statements she made after 20 minutes of this customer berating her on the phone. Having worked in a call center myself, I will say you'd be amazed at how rude people will be to you when they don't have to deal with you face to face.
But the bottom line is, I'm just saying, don't judge something based on one of these "reality shows" which deliberately are edited to keep it "interesting". Theres little to nothing based in "reality" about reality TV

Having been on American Idol. I can tell you ALL reality television is scripted and fake. They tell you exactly what to say and do and use edits to either make you seem amazing or stupid. Whatever gets the most views.
My favourite is Mayor Bill Peduto of Pittsburgh, shown in America 2014. However, I watched the show here in the UK in 2020. I loved employee Lawrence a Carpenter. Through being on the show and the Mayor giving Lawrence money, he was able to get a building for his church. The church is Mulberry Community Church in Pittsburgh. Pastor Lawrence is incredible.

None of the workers have any idea what the "boss" looks like so there is no reason for him to have a disguise in the first place. If the working situations aren't staged, how is they get multiple camera angles with each encounter, and the mike is always ready and hidden.? How is the employees open up to perfect strangers after meeting them for the first time and in so little time. Confidences like that would take years to create. Why can't they admit the whole thing is a FAKE as most reality shows are. This one takes the cake because of all the problems I've listed above.

When they film the show they make it look like a different show. They tell the viewer at the start of each episode what they're doing.
Multiple times they talk about how they tell them they are on a show, to see if someone should get a loan to start their business. That is why they are called at the end, that is them answering if they should get the loan or not.

I live in Columbus Ohio where they filmed undercover boss for the pizza company Donatos. In the episode one of the delivery drivers was driving with the CEO and told her that when he was offered weed on the job he'd take a hit. I saw the kid a while back after the show and he's still driving for Donatos.
